What is Productive Metalworks?

2 parts

Productive Metalworks is a foundry and casting mod. In this pack it is version 1.21.1-1.10.1, and it has been included since the pack's 1.0 release or earlier. It ties directly into Silent Gear, so it's worth learning before you go deep on gear.[1][2]

Who it's for

The quest book pitches it at players who can't choose between Silent Gear and Tinker's Construct. The idea is to take the best of both: you keep Silent Gear, but Productive Metalworks changes how you obtain Silent items. Instead of Blueprints, you now need Casts and a Foundry.[2]

Where it fits in the progression

The path starts in the Silent Gear quest chapter with "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, which asks for Fire Clay to begin building the Foundry.[2]

  1. Build the Foundry. In "Building the Foundry" quest you add Liquid Heating Coil blocks as the floor, plus Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks for the walls. It needs 4 walls and a floor, and the corners can stay empty. The inside can be as small as 1x1, but a bigger Foundry gives you more space. It's finished when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the coils turn orange.[2]
  2. Get the metal out. In "Casting Items" quest you put a Foundry Tap on a Foundry Drain and place a casting block underneath it.[2]
  3. Cast things. A Casting Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block. A Casting Table is what you need for making casts.[2]

After that, the quest book has you collect the casts: Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Rod Cast, Plate Cast and Gear Cast.[2]

Unverified The sources I was given don't show whether this mod sits on the ATM Star quest path, so I can't say where it falls on that route.

How do you get started with Productive Metalworks?

5 parts

In this pack, Productive Metalworks changes how you get your Silent Gear items. Instead of Blueprints, you need casts and a Foundry. So your first steps are building a Foundry, getting liquid metal out of it, and making casts.[2]

Start with Fire Clay

The questline begins with Fire Clay. The quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest asks you to make it, and it is the first step toward the Foundry.[2]

Build the Foundry

The Foundry needs a Foundry Controller, a Foundry Tank and at least one Foundry Drain. The bottom has to be made of Heating Coils.[3]

For the rest of the structure, use either Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks. The quest "Building the Foundry" quest says it needs 4 walls and a floor, and the corners can stay empty.[2]

The in-game guide gives the minimum size as 3x3x2, because there has to be at least one air block inside the structure. The quest says the inside can be as small as 1x1, but recommends going bigger because a bigger Foundry has more space.[2][3]

If a block is missing, the Controller tells you where. You'll know the Foundry is finished when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange.[2]

The Liquid Heating Coil makes up the floor of the Foundry.

Fuel it and melt something

The Foundry needs fuel inside a Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank or supply fuel through a pipe.[3]

Later you can swap the Fluid Heating Coils for Powered Heating Coils to use energy instead of liquid fuel. If you do, replace the Foundry Tank with a Foundry Capacitor.[3]

To melt items, add them through the Controller GUI or drop them right into the Foundry. After some time they turn into liquid. If you add a second liquid, some combinations alloy, and a stability upgrade prevents that.[3]

Get the metal out

Liquid leaves the Foundry through the Drain. Place a Foundry Tap on the Drain, then put casting blocks beneath it. Right-click the Tap to extract the fluid.[2][3]

How does Productive Metalworks work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

The heart of Productive Metalworks is the Foundry, a multiblock you build yourself. You melt items into fluid inside it, optionally alloy those fluids, then pour them out to cast blocks and other items.[5]

Building the Foundry

The minimum size is 3x3x2. The structure needs at least one air block inside it, and the corners are optional, so you don't have to fill them in.[5]

The foundry blocks come in several colors. In the recipes shown for this pack, dyeing works by combining a dye with any block from the matching group (controllers, tanks, drains, windows, capacitors or fire bricks). Black, blue and brown versions appear in those recipes.[6]

This is the base tank recipe in the pack. Dyed variants are made by combining a dye with an existing tank.

Fueling the Foundry

The foundry only works when there is fuel inside a Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank, or supply fuel through a pipe.[5]

If you'd rather use energy, swap the Fluid Heating Coils for Powered Heating Coils. High Powered Heating Coils create even more heat. With powered coils you must also replace the Foundry Tank with a Foundry Capacitor, such as the Black Foundry Capacitor, and then feed energy in through a cable attached to the capacitor.[5][6]

Smelting and alloying

You can add items either through the controller GUI or by dropping them straight into the foundry. After some time they turn into liquid.[5]

If you add a second liquid, some combinations can undergo an alloying reaction. The in-game Ponder example is 2/3 Iron and 1/3 Nickel turning into Invar. You can also add fluids by hand by right-clicking a drain with a bucket.[5]

Controller upgrades

  • A stability upgrade disables fluid alloying in the Foundry. Use it when you want fluids to stay separate.[5]
  • A time upgrade speeds up melting and alloying, and you can install multiple of them.[5]
  • A second time upgrade is described as twice as good as the first one.[5]

Casting

To get the fluid out, right-click a Foundry Tap attached to a drain. Pour the fluid into a Casting Basin, which slowly cools it into a block. Right-click the basin to take the item out.[5]

A Casting Table turns fluids into different casts. You add a cast by right-clicking the table with the item in hand. You can also create new items by pouring liquids over items placed in the Casting Table or Basin.[5]

Tip: You don't have to right-click the Casting Basin every time. You can also empty it with a pipe or a hopper.[5]

Unverified Any pack-specific changes to this mod's settings, such as tank or capacitor capacities, energy use and melting speeds, would live in the mod's config files. No config files for this mod were available, so the sources here do not show those values.

How do you progress through Productive Metalworks?

4 parts

In this pack, Productive Metalworks progresses through a short chain of quests rather than a ladder of tiers. You make Fire Clay, build a Foundry, pull liquid metal out of it, then cast the molds you need. The mod replaces Blueprints as the way to get Silent Gear items, so you use Casts and a Foundry instead.[2]

Step 1: Fire Clay

Everything starts with the quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, whose task is to get Fire Clay. The quest explains that Productive Metalworks changes how you obtain your Silent Gear items, so this is your entry point.[2]

Step 2: Build the Foundry

"Building the Foundry" quest comes after the quests for Foundry Drains, the Foundry Controller and Foundry Tanks. It asks for Liquid Heating Coil, which form the floor of the Foundry and heat it up. For the walls you use either Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks.[2]

Recipe id: productivemetalworks:crafting/liquid_heating_coil

  • The Foundry needs 4 walls and a floor. The frame doesn't need to be built, so every corner can stay empty.[2]
  • It can be as small as 1x1 on the inside, as long as it has a Controller, Liquid Heating Coils and the other walls filled. The quest still recommends going bigger, since a bigger Foundry has more space inside.[2]
  • If a block is missing, the Controller tells you where.[2]
  • You'll know it worked when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange.[2]
Tip: The pack also has dye recipes that recolor Fire Bricks, Foundry Windows, Tanks, Drains, Controllers and Capacitors. For example, you can get Black Fire Bricks and Blue Foundry Tank this way, so you can match the Foundry to your base.[4]

Step 3: Get the metal out

"Casting Items" quest asks for a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap. You place the Tap on a Foundry Drain, then put a block under the Tap for the liquid metal to flow into.[2]

According to the quest text, the basin (called the Casting Bin there) turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block.[2]

Step 4: Casts

After that, the chapter has one quest per cast, each following a Casts quest: Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Rod Cast, Plate Cast and Gear Cast. Each of these quests asks you to get that cast.[2]

The pack changed the gear, plate and rod cast recipes from the mod's versions. The ingot, nugget and gem cast recipes are unchanged from the mod. Here are the in-pack recipes:[4]

How does Productive Metalworks work with other mods?

5 parts

Productive Metalworks doesn't live on its own in this pack. The pack adds or changes a bunch of recipes so that molten metals from other mods flow through your Foundry, and the quests tie it into Silent Gear. Here's where the connections are.[2][4]

Silent Gear

The pack's quest book says Productive Metalworks changes how you obtain your Silent Gear items. Instead of using blueprints, you need casts and a Foundry. The questline starts at "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest with Fire Clay, then moves on to "Building the Foundry" quest, where Liquid Heating Coil forms the Foundry floor.[2]

"Casting Items" quest covers getting the metal out. You put a Foundry Tap on a drain and place a Casting Basin or Casting Table beneath it. According to the quest, the basin turns about 900 mB of liquid metal into a full metal block.[2]

Allthemodium metals

The pack lets you cast molten Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium into ingots, nuggets, plates, gears and rods, using the matching cast for each shape. For example, Allthemodium Ingot comes from the recipe below, and the vibranium and unobtainium versions follow the same pattern.[4]

Oritech

Oritech has the deepest integration. Its gems, small clumps and small dusts of copper, gold, iron, nickel and platinum can all be melted into the matching Productive Metalworks molten metal, for example Copper Gem into Molten Copper.[4]

You can also alloy Oritech's metals in the Foundry. The pack has alloying recipes for Molten Adamant, Molten Biosteel, Molten Duratium and Molten Energite. You can then cast the biosteel, duratium and energite into ingots. Casting also gives you Fluxite and Biomass with the gem cast.[4]

All the Ores and Create

The pack's casting recipes also produce All the Ores items, so you can cast Brass Ingot, Brass Nugget, Brass Plate and Brass Block from Molten Brass. Plates of copper, gold and iron and a Zinc Block are covered too. On the Create side, a Productive Metalworks recipe turns Chocolate into a Bar of Chocolate.[4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Metalworks?

3 parts

In this pack, Productive Metalworks lives in the Silent Gear quest chapter. The chapter's idea is to take the best of Silent Gear and Tinker's Construct: instead of using Blueprints to get your Silent Gear items, you'll use Casts and a Foundry.[2]

Quest order

  1. "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest is where it starts. It asks for Fire Clay, which is the first thing you need to begin building the Foundry.[2]
  2. "Building the Foundry" quest unlocks after the intro quest and the Foundry Drains, Foundry Controller and Foundry Tanks quests. It asks for the Liquid Heating Coil, which forms the floor of the Foundry and heats it up.[2]
  3. "Casting Items" quest comes after Building the Foundry. It asks for the Casting Table, the Casting Basin and the Foundry Tap.[2]
  4. Six cast quests come after a quest called Casts, each asking for one cast: a quest in "Silent Gear" for the Ingot Cast, a quest in "Silent Gear" for the Nugget Cast, a quest in "Silent Gear" for the Gem Cast, a quest in "Silent Gear" for the Rod Cast, a quest in "Silent Gear" for the Plate Cast and a quest in "Silent Gear" for the Gear Cast.[2]

Building the Foundry

The quest text says that besides the Controller, Drains and Tanks, you need Liquid Heating Coils for the floor, plus either Foundry Windows or Fire Bricks for the rest of the structure. The Foundry needs 4 walls and a floor, but the frame doesn't have to be built out, so every corner can stay empty.[2]

The inside can be as small as 1x1, but the quest doesn't recommend it, because a bigger Foundry has more space in it. You'll know it's finished when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange.[2]

Tip: If your Foundry won't complete, check the Controller. According to the quest text, it tells you where a block is missing.[2]

Getting the metal out

The Casting Items quest explains the next step: place the Foundry Tap on the Foundry Drain, then put blocks beneath it to drain the Liquid Metal into. The quest text says a Casting Basin turns about 900mB of Liquid Metal into a full metal block, while the Casting Table is what you need to make the casts.[2]

Unverified The second task of Building the Foundry can't be read in the available quest data, and the id of the Casts quest that leads to the six cast quests isn't shown, so neither is covered here.
