What is Productive Metalworks?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 3.2 guide

Productive Metalworks is in this pack as version 1.21.1-1.6.0. If you like working with metal and making your own gear, this is one to look out for![1]

The mod's items point toward casting. You'll run into Fire Clay, a Liquid Heating Coil, the Casting Table, the Casting Basin, the Foundry Tap, and a whole set of casts.[2]

Where it fits in the pack

In this pack, you'll find the quests for Productive Metalworks in the Silent Gear quest chapter. If you're working through that chapter, this mod is part of your path. Here's the order the quests unlock in:[2]

  1. First, grab some Fire Clay for a quest in "?".[2]
  2. Next, a quest in "?" asks for a Liquid Heating Coil. It opens once you've finished the Fire Clay quest plus a few other quests in the chapter.[2]
  3. After that, a quest in "?" wants a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap.[2]
  4. The cast quests come next: a quest in "?" for the Ingot Cast, a quest in "?" for the Nugget Cast, a quest in "?" for the Gem Cast, a quest in "?" for the Rod Cast, a quest in "?" for the Plate Cast and a quest in "?" for the Gear Cast. All six unlock after the same earlier quest in the chapter.[2]
Tip: The mod comes with its own in-game guide book. It's the best place to look for the details of how everything works.[3][4][5]

Unverified The exact mechanics aren't confirmed here. That includes how the foundry structure is built, what you can melt, and how casting ties into Silent Gear parts. Check the in-game guide book for these details.

How do you get started with Productive Metalworks?

6 parts

Productive Metalworks is built around the Foundry. You melt items into fluid, then pour that fluid into casts or blocks. The pack's Silent Gear quest chapter walks you through the first pieces in a fixed order, and this section follows the same path.[6][7]

Start with Fire Clay

Begin with Fire Clay. It's the first quest in the chapter, a quest in "?", and the Heating Coil quest comes after it.[6]

Liquid Heating Coil

Next comes the Liquid Heating Coil, from quest a quest in "?". The bottom of a Foundry has to be made up of Heating Coils, so you'll want several of these.[6][7]

The Basin slowly cools fluid into a block. The Table turns fluid into casts. To get fluid out, right-click a Foundry Tap that is attached to a drain.[7]

Build the Foundry

The smallest Foundry is 3x3x2, because it needs at least one air block inside. Corners are optional. On top of the Heating Coil floor, you need a Foundry Controller, a Foundry Tank and at least one Foundry Drain.[7]

The crafting recipes below make the black variants of the Black Foundry Controller, the Black Foundry Tank and the Black Foundry Drain. The pack also has dye recipes that recolor each of these parts.[8]

Fuel, melt and pour

The Foundry needs fuel inside its Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank or feed it through a pipe. Once it's running, add items through the controller GUI or just drop them into the Foundry, and after some time they turn into liquid.[7]

If you'd rather use energy, you can swap in Powered Heating Coils, but then the Foundry Tank has to become a Foundry Capacitor. You supply the energy through a cable attached to the capacitor.[7]

Tip: When you melt a second fluid, some of it may undergo an alloying reaction. For example, 2/3 Iron and 1/3 Nickel turn into Invar. A stability upgrade disables fluid alloying if you don't want that.[7]

Casts

The same quest chapter also has a quest for each cast: Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Plate Cast, Rod Cast and Gear Cast. The pack changed the gear, plate and rod cast recipes, while the ingot, gem and nugget ones are the mod's own.[6][8]

To add a cast to a Casting Table, right-click it with the item in hand. You can also create new items by pouring liquids over items placed in the Table or Basin.[7]

How does Productive Metalworks work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

The heart of Productive Metalworks is the Foundry, a multiblock you build yourself. You melt items into fluid inside it, optionally alloy those fluids, then pour them out to cast blocks and other items.[9]

Building the Foundry

The minimum size is 3x3x2. The structure needs at least one air block inside it, and the corners are optional, so you don't have to fill them in.[9]

The foundry blocks come in several colors. In the recipes shown for this pack, dyeing works by combining a dye with any block from the matching group (controllers, tanks, drains, windows, capacitors or fire bricks). Black, blue and brown versions appear in those recipes.[10]

This is the base tank recipe in the pack. Dyed variants are made by combining a dye with an existing tank.

Fueling the Foundry

The foundry only works when there is fuel inside a Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank, or supply fuel through a pipe.[9]

If you'd rather use energy, swap the Fluid Heating Coils for Powered Heating Coils. High Powered Heating Coils create even more heat. With powered coils you must also replace the Foundry Tank with a Foundry Capacitor, such as the Black Foundry Capacitor, and then feed energy in through a cable attached to the capacitor.[9][10]

Smelting and alloying

You can add items either through the controller GUI or by dropping them straight into the foundry. After some time they turn into liquid.[9]

If you add a second liquid, some combinations can undergo an alloying reaction. The in-game Ponder example is 2/3 Iron and 1/3 Nickel turning into Invar. You can also add fluids by hand by right-clicking a drain with a bucket.[9]

Controller upgrades

  • A stability upgrade disables fluid alloying in the Foundry. Use it when you want fluids to stay separate.[9]
  • A time upgrade speeds up melting and alloying, and you can install multiple of them.[9]
  • A second time upgrade is described as twice as good as the first one.[9]

Casting

To get the fluid out, right-click a Foundry Tap attached to a drain. Pour the fluid into a Casting Basin, which slowly cools it into a block. Right-click the basin to take the item out.[9]

A Casting Table turns fluids into different casts. You add a cast by right-clicking the table with the item in hand. You can also create new items by pouring liquids over items placed in the Casting Table or Basin.[9]

Tip: You don't have to right-click the Casting Basin every time. You can also empty it with a pipe or a hopper.[9]

Unverified Any pack-specific changes to this mod's settings, such as tank or capacitor capacities, energy use and melting speeds, would live in the mod's config files. No config files for this mod were available, so the sources here do not show those values.

How do you progress through Productive Metalworks?

5 parts

Productive Metalworks doesn't have a long tier ladder in this pack. What the pack gives you is a short quest line in the silent_gear chapter that walks you from your first Fire Clay to a full set of casts. Here's how it goes, step by step.[6]

First: Fire Clay

The line starts with a quest in "?", which asks you to get Fire Clay. It's the first quest in the chain and the base for everything after it.[6]

Step 2: Liquid Heating Coil

Next is a quest in "?", which has you obtain the Liquid Heating Coil. Fire Clay isn't the only requirement here. This quest unlocks after four quests in the chapter, and Fire Clay is one of them.[6]

Step 3: Casting equipment

Once the coil quest is done, a quest in "?" asks for three items at once: the Casting Table, the Casting Basin and the Foundry Tap. Their in-pack recipes are shown below.[6]

Step 4: The casts

The last part of the line is six separate quests, one for each cast. They all unlock after the same quest in the chapter, so you can do them in any order. Each one asks you to obtain a single cast:[6]

The pack has changed three of these cast recipes: the Gear Cast, the Plate Cast and the Rod Cast. The Gem Cast, Ingot Cast and Nugget Cast use the mod's own recipes. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack versions.[6][8]

Beyond the quests, the pack has dye recipes for the foundry parts: fire bricks, controllers, drains, tanks, windows and capacitors. These include colors like black, blue, brown, cyan, gray, green, light blue and light gray. The black controller, for example, has its own crafting recipe, and the other colors are made by dyeing an existing part.[8]

How does Productive Metalworks work with other mods?

5 parts

Productive Metalworks connects to several other mods in this pack through recipes the pack added or changed. They cover melting Oritech materials, alloying Oritech metals, casting Allthemodium metals, casting plates and blocks that other mods use, and a set of colored capacitors.[8]

Oritech

Oritech has the deepest link. The pack has changed a whole set of Oritech compat recipes so Productive Metalworks can melt Oritech materials. Copper, gold, iron, nickel and platinum can each be melted from an Oritech gem, a small clump or a small dust, and each gives you the matching molten metal, such as Molten Copper or Molten Nickel.[8]

Alloying also reaches into Oritech. The pack changed four alloying recipes that make Molten Adamant, Molten Biosteel, Molten Duratium and Molten Energite. They use molten metals from Productive Metalworks, along with Oritech's Biofuel and Molten Fluxite for two of them.[8]

Molten DuratiumChanged by the pack

Fluid Alloying (productivemetalworks)

Recipe id: oritech:compat/productivemetalworks/alloying/duratium

One of the four pack-changed Oritech alloying recipes.

You can then cast those fluids. An Ingot Cast gives you Biosteel Ingot, Duratium Ingot or Energite Ingot. A Gem Cast gives you Fluxite from molten fluxite and Biomass from biofuel.[8]

The same compat set also casts a few All the Ores items. Molten Platinum becomes Platinum Ingot with an ingot cast, or Platinum Nugget with a Nugget Cast. Molten Electrum, Molten Nickel and Molten Steel can be block-cast into Electrum Block, Nickel Block and Steel Block.[8]

Allthemodium metals

The pack adds casting for the three Allthemodium metals: Molten Allthemodium, Molten Unobtainium and Molten Vibranium. Each can be cast into an ingot, a nugget, a plate, a rod and a gear with the matching cast. For example, Vibranium Gear uses the Gear Cast.[8]

The Allthemodium ingot is cast with the ingot cast, like the other ATM metals.

There is also a heating coil link. The pack changed the recipe for the High Powered Heating Coil so it is a block-casting recipe that involves Soul Lava and the Powered Heating Coil.[8]

Create-named recipes and brass

Several pack-changed casting recipes have ids under a Create folder. They cast metal parts as All the Ores items. Molten Brass casts into Brass Block, Brass Ingot and Brass Nugget. With a Plate Cast, molten brass, copper, gold and iron become Brass Plate, Copper Plate, Gold Plate and Iron Plate. Molten Copper also casts into Copper Nugget, and Molten Zinc into Zinc Block.[8]

One fun extra: the pack lets you cast Chocolate with an ingot cast to get a Bar of Chocolate.[8]

Dyenamics and Friends

The pack adds Foundry Capacitor recipes in a range of colors, for example Amber Foundry Capacitor and Wine Foundry Capacitor. Each one is block-cast from the matching colored fire bricks and Molten Redstone.[8]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book puts Productive Metalworks in the silent_gear chapter. It starts with a quest in "?" for Fire Clay. After that comes a quest in "?" for the Liquid Heating Coil, then a quest in "?" for the Casting Table, Casting Basin and Foundry Tap. The cast quests, like a quest in "?" for the ingot cast and a quest in "?" for the gear cast, each follow a different quest.[6]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Metalworks?

4 parts

All of this mod's quests sit in one chapter of the quest book: "silent_gear", which has 68 quests in total. Productive Metalworks is a small slice of it, and the chapter then carries on into Silent Gear content. Here is the path in the order the book lays it out.[6]

Starting out: Fire Clay and the heating coil

The mod's line begins with a quest in "?", which asks you to hand in Fire Clay. Nothing comes before it.[6]

Three untitled quests branch off Fire Clay, and each asks for an item. a quest in "?" comes after Fire Clay and those untitled quests. It asks for the Liquid Heating Coil plus one more item.[6]

Casting setup

Once the coil is done, a quest in "?" opens up. Despite the name, it asks for three things: the Casting Table, the Casting Basin and the Foundry Tap.[6]

After that comes a quest titled a quest in "?", which asks for an iron ingot and coal. It acts as the hub for everything that follows.[6]

The cast quests

The coal quest unlocks a big spread of quests that all hang off it, one per cast. These are the ones for this mod:[6]

The same fan-out also holds dozens of further cast quests for tools, weapons, armor and jewelry, such as Pickaxe Cast, Sword Cast and Helmet Cast. Their items use a different namespace from this mod. It also holds several Silent Gear blueprint quests and the Salvager quest. You can take them in any order, since they all depend only on the coal quest.[6]

Where the chapter goes next

Past the casts, the chapter moves into Silent Gear's own machines and materials. a quest in "?" leads to Recrystallizer and Material Grader. Material Grader leads on to Alloy Forge and several dust quests, and Alloy Forge leads to Starlight Charger. These are Silent Gear content rather than Productive Metalworks.[6]

Tip: Do the Fire Clay, heating coil and casting setup quests first. Every cast quest is gated behind them, so they are the route into the rest of the chapter.[6]
