What is Iron Furnaces?
3 parts
Iron Furnaces is inspired by cpw's Iron Chests mod. Instead of chests, it gives you several tiers of furnace that smelt faster, have sides you can reconfigure, and can take augments for things like smoking and blasting. It is for anyone who is tired of waiting on a vanilla furnace and wants a simple, upgradeable smelting setup. This pack includes version 4.3.1.[1][2]
The upgrade ladder
The pack's quest chapter treats the furnaces as a step-by-step upgrade path. A normal furnace takes 200 ticks to smelt one item, and the Copper Furnace takes 180. The Iron Furnace takes 160 ticks (8 seconds). Next come the Silver Furnace at 140 ticks (7 seconds) and the Golden Furnace at 120 ticks. Above those is the Diamond Furnace, which the Speed augment quest describes as smelting every 80 ticks.[3]
Start with "Copper Furnace" quest and "Iron Furnace" quest. They unlock the rest of the chapter, including the settings, heat and augment quests.[3]
What else it adds
- Augments change how a furnace works: Augment: Blasting and Augment: Smoking turn it into a blast furnace or smoker at twice the speed, and the quests say they stack with other upgrades. Augment: Factory makes it run on energy, and Augment: Generator turns fuel into energy.[3]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency halves fuel use at the cost of half the speed, and Augment: Speed makes the furnace faster at twice the fuel usage.[3]
- The Wireless Heat Transmitter and Wireless Heat Receiver let you power furnaces wirelessly with energy.[3]
- The Furnace Settings Linker copies input, output and redstone settings from one furnace to others.[3]
Where it leads
The mod page highlights the Rainbow Furnace, asking whether you can craft it and unlock its power. In this pack, the "Rainbow Plating" quest quest asks for 8 Rainbow Plating and says you need every furnace before Netherite, including the Copper, Silver and Crystal ones.[1][3]
The mod is explicitly compatible with JEI and Project MMO, and the developers say it should work with most other mods.[1]
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Iron Furnaces gives you a ladder of furnace tiers, and the higher tiers smelt faster. The idea is simple: start from a normal furnace and keep upgrading it. Here is the order I'd go in.[1][3]
Start with the Copper Furnace
Copper is one of the most common ores you can find, so the Copper Furnace is a handy first step. A normal furnace takes 200 ticks to smelt one item (20 ticks is 1 second), and the Copper Furnace takes 180. It's a small gain, but it's the start of the chain. The quest "Copper Furnace" quest covers it.[3]

If you already have a furnace placed, the upgrade items work on it directly: sneak and right-click the furnace with the upgrade, for example Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade.[4][5]
Move on to the Iron Furnace
This is the one to aim for early. The Iron Furnace takes 160 ticks, or 8 seconds, per item. You can make it from a normal furnace or from a Copper Furnace. The pack's early quest "Smelting iron with iron" quest points you to it too, and it can be configured for automation with the cogwheel in the top left of the furnace screen.[3][6]

Alternative route starting from a Copper Furnace.
Set up the furnace sides
Click the cogwheel in the top left of the furnace screen to open its configuration. You'll find auto-input and auto-output buttons, redstone activation, and a box for each side of the furnace. Each side can input, output, do both, input fuel, or do nothing. This matters when you pipe items in or out.[3][6]
Once one furnace is set up, the Furnace Settings Linker copies all of those settings to other furnaces, which saves a lot of clicking.[3]
Power it without fuel
Wireless heat is an easy way to run your furnaces, and the quest a quest in "Iron Furnaces" unlocks after the Copper and Iron Furnace quests. You need the transmitter and the receiver.[3]

- Place the Wireless Heat Transmitter and feed it energy.[3][4]
- Put the Wireless Heat Receiver into the transmitter to bind it.[3][4]
- Put the bound receiver in the furnace's fuel slot and it starts powering the furnace.[3][4]
Keep climbing
After the Iron Furnace, the next steps are the Silver Furnace at 140 ticks (7 seconds) and the Golden Furnace at 120 ticks. The Diamond Furnace comes after Gold and takes 80 ticks, or 4 seconds. Here are the in-pack recipes for those three.[3]

If you want even more speed later, the Augment: Speed halves the cooktime for all recipes, at the cost of using twice the fuel.[3][4]
How does Iron Furnaces work?
6 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 1.1 guide
Iron Furnaces is built around one simple idea taken a long way: a ladder of furnace tiers that smelt faster and take upgrades, plus a slot system that lets you bolt extra behaviour onto any of them. The project describes the goal as maximising smelting efficiency with speed, reconfigurable sides and augments for smoking and blasting, and in this pack that ladder runs all the way from copper up to the Rainbow Furnace.[1]
The tier ladder
Tiers in this pack form a chain, with each step crafted around the tier below it. Starting from a vanilla furnace you can go to Copper Furnace or Iron Furnace, then on through Silver Furnace, Golden Furnace, Diamond Furnace, Emerald Furnace and Crystal Furnace, up to Obsidian Furnace and Netherite Furnace. Several of those steps have two crafting routes, so you can come up the silver side or the gold side depending on what you have spare.[7]
Above netherite the pack keeps going with the All the Mods metals: Allthemodium Furnace, Vibranium Furnace and Unobtainium Furnace, each built on the tier before it. The top of the chain is Rainbow Furnace, which is assembled from Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating rather than from another furnace.[7]

The pack changed this recipe from the mod default.
Augments
Augments are the mod's upgrade items, and their tooltips say to right-click to insert one. Each of the main augments is a trade-off rather than a straight buff, so pick based on what the furnace is doing in your build.[8]
- Augment: Speed halves the cooktime for all recipes, but the furnace uses up twice the amount of fuel.[8]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat up the furnace twice as much, at the cost of slowing the cooktime by 25% for all recipes.[8]
- Augment: Blasting restricts the furnace to blasting recipes only, and Augment: Smoking restricts it to smoking recipes only.[8]
- Augment: Factory converts the furnace into a factory and makes it use power for heat instead of fuel.[8]
- Augment: Generator makes heat from the furnace generate power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items.[8]

There is also a redstone augment with several modes, switched by right-clicking in the air. Redstone Control mode stops the furnace smelting while it has a redstone signal, Redstone Inverse Control mode only smelts while it has one, Comparator mode makes the furnace act as an internal comparator and output the signal to all sides, and Comparator Subtraction mode does the same but lets you subtract a signal strength configured in the furnace GUI.[8]
An experience augment handles the XP a furnace builds up. In one mode the experience granted from smelting is ejected to nearby fluid tanks, and in the other it is given to the player who placed the furnace. You swap between the two by sneaking and right-clicking in the air.[8]
Item handling and automation
Iron Furnaces furnaces expose configurable sides for item transfer, which is what lets you feed one from a pipe or conveyor on one face and pull finished output from another instead of relying on the vanilla top/bottom/side rules.[1][8]
The mod has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO, and it ships its own JEI categories so you can look up what a furnace will accept in a given mode.[1][8]
Wireless heat
If you would rather run furnaces off your power grid than off solid fuel, the mod gives you a two-part wireless heat system. Wireless Heat Transmitter is the block: you feed it Forge Energy and it powers every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it. You bind a receiver by placing it inside the transmitter, then drop that receiver into the fuel slot of the furnace you want to run. Receivers only work from Iron tier and above, so a Copper Furnace cannot use them.[8]

The Rainbow generator
The Rainbow Furnace has a special power mode with strict conditions. For it to generate, one furnace of each tier must be an active generator and must not have a full buffer; the tooltip then lists the RF/tick you get when all of those other furnaces are generating power. Its output goes only to sides you have configured as output and is never added to its own internal buffer, and you can only have one Rainbow Generator.[8]
Extras
Two cosmetic items round things out. Furnace Spooka-lator is right-clicked on a furnace to spookalize it, and sneaking and right-clicking cleanses any spookalizations. Furnace Wrapping Papers wraps a furnace as a gift, and sneaking and right-clicking opens the gift again.[8]
Unverified Furnace Settings Linker is craftable in this pack, but the available sources do not describe exactly which settings it copies or how you apply them, so treat its behaviour as untested until you try it in game.
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Furnace progression here is a ladder: the quest chapter walks you up it tier by tier, and each tier is crafted from an earlier furnace. Most steps also have a matching upgrade item in the mod's recipe set.[3][5]
Starting out
The first upgrade comes early. A quest in Chapter 1 shows you can turn a normal furnace into an Iron Furnace, which smelts faster and can be automated with the cogwheel in the top left of the GUI.[6]

The Iron Furnaces chapter then starts with "Copper Furnace" quest and "Iron Furnace" quest. Either one can be your first upgrade, and the chapter's side quests (wireless heat, the settings linker, the holiday items) unlock after both.[3]
The tier ladder
Speeds below are the cook times given in the pack's quests. 20 ticks equal 1 second.[3]
- Normal furnace: 200 ticks. Copper Furnace: 180 ticks.[3]
- Iron Furnace: 160 ticks (8 seconds). Silver Furnace: 140 ticks (7 seconds).[3]
- Golden Furnace: 120 ticks. Diamond Furnace: 80 ticks (4 seconds).[3]
- Emerald Furnace and Crystal Furnace: 40 ticks each. The Emerald one is 2 seconds.[3]
- Obsidian Furnace: 20 ticks (1 second).[3]
- Netherite Furnace: 5 ticks, which is 4 items smelted per second.[3]
- Allthemodium Furnace is described as pretty much the same as the Netherite Furnace. Vibranium Furnace is better still, and Unobtainium Furnace smelts faster than any other furnace in the pack. The quests give no tick values for these three.[3]
Which furnace upgrades into which
The early tiers branch, so you have a choice. A Silver Furnace can be made from a Copper or an Iron Furnace, and a Gold Furnace from an Iron or a Silver one. From Gold the path narrows: the Diamond Furnace is only made from a Gold Furnace.[3][5]
After Diamond it splits again. You can go to Emerald or Crystal, and either of them leads to Obsidian, then Netherite. Each step also has a dedicated upgrade item, such as Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade, Gold to Diamond Furnace Upgrade and Crystal to Obsidian Furnace Upgrade.[3][5]

Netherite and the modded tiers
The pack changed the Netherite Furnace recipe, and also the Obsidian to Netherite Furnace Upgrade recipe, so check these in-pack versions instead of trusting the mod's defaults. The quest adds that you don't need a Smithing Template, just a lot of Netherite.[3][5]

From there the line continues Netherite, then Allthemodium, then Vibranium, then Unobtainium. The Vibranium quest comes after Allthemodium, and the Unobtainium quest comes after Vibranium. These tiers also have upgrade items like Netherite to Allthemodium Furnace Upgrade, Allthemodium to Vibranium Furnace Upgrade and Vibranium to Unobtainium Furnace Upgrade.[3][5]

The Rainbow Furnace branch
The Rainbow Furnace is a side branch off Netherite. You need 8 Rainbow Plating and a Rainbow Core, and the core's quest unlocks after the Netherite Furnace. It smelts every 20 ticks, but the quest hints that it handles a whole stack of items at once.[3][5]

Two quests sit after it. "Rainbow Generator" quest describes a boost for a Rainbow Furnace running Augment: Generator when the other nine furnaces around it are generating energy too, worth 2kFE a tick more. "Rainbow Coal" quest is about getting Rainbow Coal by blowing up the Rainbow Furnace, which the quest calls coal that lasts forever.[3]
How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?
3 parts
Iron Furnaces mostly does its own thing in this pack, but the Unobtainium Furnace shows up in recipes that the pack added. They make items from other mods, so keep it in mind once you get that far.[5]
Creative Thruster for Iron Jetpacks
The pack adds its own shaped crafting recipe for the Thruster, shown below. It pulls in items from other mods, including Block of Unobtainium and Block Of Nitro Crystal.[5]

General compatibility
The mod's project page says Iron Furnaces should be compatible with most mods, and that it has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO.[1]
The pack's quest text for Augment: Factory says it makes a furnace work like the Smelting Factory from Mekanism, using Energy instead of fuel, and that you can pipe Energy in. That is a comparison, not a recipe link, so don't expect it to change anything about Mekanism itself.[3]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Almost everything for this mod lives in its own quest chapter, "Iron Furnaces". One extra quest sits in "Chapter 1: Starting out". The chapter follows the furnace upgrade line, so you can work through it in the same order you would upgrade your furnaces.[3][6]
Where it starts: Chapter 1
"Smelting iron with iron" quest is the first time you meet the mod. It unlocks after the Easy Ore Duping quest and asks you to hand in an Iron Furnace. The quest notes that these smelt faster and can be set up for automation with the cogwheel in the top left of the GUI.[6]
The Iron Furnaces chapter, in order
- Start with "Iron Furnace" quest and "Copper Furnace" quest. Neither has a prerequisite. They ask for an Iron Furnace and a Copper Furnace. The quest text gives the cook times as 160 ticks (8 seconds) for the Iron Furnace and 180 ticks for the Copper Furnace, against 200 ticks for a normal furnace.[3]
- Once you have both, several quests open up. "Silver Furnace" quest asks for a Silver Furnace, which smelts at 140 ticks (7 seconds). "Configurations" quest asks for the Furnace Settings Linker, which copies a furnace's input, output and redstone settings to other furnaces. There are also three side quests: the wireless heat quest (a quest in "Iron Furnaces"), the wrapping paper quest (a quest in "Iron Furnaces") and the Halloween quest (a quest in "Iron Furnaces").[3]
- "Golden Furnace" quest follows the Iron and Silver Furnace quests and asks for a Golden Furnace, with a cook time of 120 ticks.[3]
- "Diamond Furnace" quest comes next and asks for a Diamond Furnace, which takes 80 ticks (4 seconds) per item.[3]
- The line then splits in two. "Crystal Furnace" quest asks for a Crystal Furnace and "Emerald Furnace" quest asks for an Emerald Furnace. The quest text gives 40 ticks for both.[3]
- "Obsidian Furnace" quest needs either the Crystal or the Emerald Furnace quest done first. It asks for an Obsidian Furnace, which works every 20 ticks.[3]
- "Netherite Furnace" quest asks for a Netherite Furnace. The quest text says it smelts an item every 5 ticks.[3]
- After the Netherite Furnace, the chapter splits into two tracks, covered below.[3]
After Netherite: two tracks
The first track goes upward through the modded furnaces. "Allthemodium Furnace" quest asks for an Allthemodium Furnace. "Vibranium Furnace" quest follows with a Vibranium Furnace. The last step is "Unobtainium Furnace" quest, which asks for an Unobtainium Furnace. The quest text says this one smelts faster than any other furnace in the pack.[3]
The second track is the Rainbow line. "Rainbow Core" quest unlocks after the Netherite Furnace quest and asks for an Rainbow Core. "Rainbow Plating" quest needs the furnace quests from Copper up to Emerald and Obsidian (everything before Netherite) and asks for 8 Rainbow Plating.[3]
With the Core and the Plating done, "Rainbow Furnace" quest asks for the Rainbow Furnace. Two quests then branch off it. "Rainbow Coal" quest asks for Rainbow Coal. "Rainbow Generator" quest asks you to hand in the Rainbow Furnace plus the Copper, Iron, Silver, Golden, Diamond, Emerald, Crystal, Obsidian and Netherite furnaces. That quest is about a generator boost: the text says the surrounding furnaces, when they run Augment: Generator and are actively making energy, give a working Rainbow Furnace with that augment 2kFE a tick more.[3]
Augment quests
Six augment quests unlock after a quest called "Augments". The sources don't show how you unlock that quest, so check it in your quest book.[3]
- "Augment: Speed" quest asks for Augment: Speed. The quest text says a Diamond Furnace then smelts every 40 ticks instead of 80, at the cost of twice the fuel usage.[3]
- "Augment: Fuel Efficiency" quest asks for Augment: Fuel Efficiency. The furnace uses half the fuel, so coal smelts 16 items instead of 8.[3]
- "Augment: Blasting" quest asks for Augment: Blasting. It makes the furnace act as a blast furnace that smelts only ores, at twice the speed.[3]
- "Augment: Smoking" quest asks for Augment: Smoking. It makes the furnace smoke only food, at twice the speed.[3]
- "Augment: Factory" quest asks for Augment: Factory. The furnace runs on energy instead of fuel.[3]
- "Augment: Generator" quest asks for Augment: Generator. It is the opposite of the Factory augment: the furnace turns fuel into energy instead of smelting.[3]
Side quests
- a quest in "Iron Furnaces" has no title and asks for the Wireless Heat Transmitter and the Wireless Heat Receiver. Place the Transmitter and feed it energy, put the Receiver into the Transmitter to bind it, then put the Receiver in the furnace's fuel slot.[3]
- a quest in "Iron Furnaces" is titled "All Wrapped up" and asks for Furnace Wrapping Papers. Right click it on a furnace to wrap it, and Shift Right Click to unwrap it.[3]
- a quest in "Iron Furnaces" is titled "This is Halloween" and asks for the Furnace Spooka-lator. Right click a furnace to spookify it, and Shift Right Click to undo it.[3]
