What is Iron Furnaces?

2 parts

Iron Furnaces is inspired by cpw's Iron Chests mod. Where that mod gives you better chests, this one gives you several tiers of furnace. The mod page promises faster smelting, reconfigurable sides, and augments for smoking and blasting. It's for anyone who is tired of waiting on a vanilla furnace.[1]

The pack ships Iron Furnaces 4.3.1 for NeoForge 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[2]

Where it fits in progression

You meet the mod early. The first chapter has a quest for the Iron Furnace (a quest in "?"), and the "generators" chapter has its own Iron Furnace and Copper Furnace quests (a quest in "?" and a quest in "?").[3][4]

From there the quests walk you up the furnace tiers in this order:[3]

  1. Silver Furnace and then Golden Furnace.[3]
  2. Diamond Furnace, which unlocks both the Crystal Furnace and the Emerald Furnace.[3]
  3. Obsidian Furnace, which comes after the Crystal and Emerald furnaces, then Netherite Furnace.[3]
  4. Allthemodium Furnace, then Vibranium Furnace, then Unobtainium Furnace.[3]

The Rainbow Furnace sits on its own branch. Its quest (a quest in "?") needs you to finish the 8 Rainbow Plating quest (a quest in "?") and the Rainbow Core quest (a quest in "?"). The core quest itself comes after the Netherite Furnace. Once you have the Rainbow Furnace, a Rainbow Coal quest follows (a quest in "?").[3]

Extras the quests point you to

Unverified This section doesn't cover the exact speed, fuel or recipe details of each tier in this pack. Check the recipe and config sections for those.

How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?

3 parts

Iron Furnaces adds a ladder of furnace tiers, and your first job is to get on the bottom rung. In this pack, the Iron Furnace is a quest in the starting-out chapter, and the generators chapter opens with two quests that have no prerequisites: the Iron Furnace a quest in "?" and the Copper Furnace a quest in "?". The starting-out quest is a quest in "?".[3][4]

Step by step

  1. Craft the Iron Furnace. It's the first furnace the quests ask for, and it's made from a regular furnace plus iron.[3][4][5]
  2. Craft the Copper Furnace, the other opening quest in the generators chapter.[3][5]

If you'd rather upgrade a furnace you already have, there are upgrade items too, like the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade. The upgrade tooltip says to sneak and right-click to use it.[5][6]

Next: heat and augments

Once you have both furnaces, the Wireless Heat Transmitter and Wireless Heat Receiver quest opens up. You link them by placing the receiver in the transmitter. Feed the Wireless Heat Transmitter Forge Energy and it powers every receiver bound to it. The tooltips say the receiver goes in the furnace's fuel slot and only works from Iron tier and above, which is a good reason to build the Iron Furnace first.[3][6]

Augments are the other early upgrade. You right-click to insert one into a furnace. The Augment: Speed halves the cooktime for all recipes, but it uses up twice the amount of fuel. The Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, but slows the cooktime by 25% for all recipes.[5][6]

Climbing the tiers

After the Iron and Copper furnaces, the quests lead you to the Silver Furnace, then the Golden Furnace. Beyond that the chain continues through Diamond, Crystal, Emerald, Obsidian and Netherite. The long-term goal is the Rainbow Furnace, the Rainbow Furnace, which needs a Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating.[3][5]

Tip: The pack changes the recipes for the Netherite Furnace and the Obsidian to Netherite Furnace Upgrade. Check the in-pack recipe, not the mod's default, when you get that far.[5]

How does Iron Furnaces work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 1.1 guide

Iron Furnaces is built around one simple idea taken a long way: a ladder of furnace tiers that smelt faster and take upgrades, plus a slot system that lets you bolt extra behaviour onto any of them. The project describes the goal as maximising smelting efficiency with speed, reconfigurable sides and augments for smoking and blasting, and in this pack that ladder runs all the way from copper up to the Rainbow Furnace.[1]

The tier ladder

Tiers in this pack form a chain, with each step crafted around the tier below it. Starting from a vanilla furnace you can go to Copper Furnace or Iron Furnace, then on through Silver Furnace, Golden Furnace, Diamond Furnace, Emerald Furnace and Crystal Furnace, up to Obsidian Furnace and Netherite Furnace. Several of those steps have two crafting routes, so you can come up the silver side or the gold side depending on what you have spare.[7]

Above netherite the pack keeps going with the All the Mods metals: Allthemodium Furnace, Vibranium Furnace and Unobtainium Furnace, each built on the tier before it. The top of the chain is Rainbow Furnace, which is assembled from Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating rather than from another furnace.[7]

Tip: Furnace tooltips tell you to sneak and right-click to upgrade, so you do not have to dismantle a build every time you move up a tier.[8]

Augments

Augments are the mod's upgrade items, and their tooltips say to right-click to insert one. Each of the main augments is a trade-off rather than a straight buff, so pick based on what the furnace is doing in your build.[8]

There is also a redstone augment with several modes, switched by right-clicking in the air. Redstone Control mode stops the furnace smelting while it has a redstone signal, Redstone Inverse Control mode only smelts while it has one, Comparator mode makes the furnace act as an internal comparator and output the signal to all sides, and Comparator Subtraction mode does the same but lets you subtract a signal strength configured in the furnace GUI.[8]

An experience augment handles the XP a furnace builds up. In one mode the experience granted from smelting is ejected to nearby fluid tanks, and in the other it is given to the player who placed the furnace. You swap between the two by sneaking and right-clicking in the air.[8]

Item handling and automation

Iron Furnaces furnaces expose configurable sides for item transfer, which is what lets you feed one from a pipe or conveyor on one face and pull finished output from another instead of relying on the vanilla top/bottom/side rules.[1][8]

The mod has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO, and it ships its own JEI categories so you can look up what a furnace will accept in a given mode.[1][8]

Wireless heat

If you would rather run furnaces off your power grid than off solid fuel, the mod gives you a two-part wireless heat system. Wireless Heat Transmitter is the block: you feed it Forge Energy and it powers every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it. You bind a receiver by placing it inside the transmitter, then drop that receiver into the fuel slot of the furnace you want to run. Receivers only work from Iron tier and above, so a Copper Furnace cannot use them.[8]

Watch out: An unbound transmitter will tell you it has yet to be bound to an energy source, so check the tooltip if your furnaces suddenly go cold.[8]

The Rainbow generator

The Rainbow Furnace has a special power mode with strict conditions. For it to generate, one furnace of each tier must be an active generator and must not have a full buffer; the tooltip then lists the RF/tick you get when all of those other furnaces are generating power. Its output goes only to sides you have configured as output and is never added to its own internal buffer, and you can only have one Rainbow Generator.[8]

Extras

Two cosmetic items round things out. Furnace Spooka-lator is right-clicked on a furnace to spookalize it, and sneaking and right-clicking cleanses any spookalizations. Furnace Wrapping Papers wraps a furnace as a gift, and sneaking and right-clicking opens the gift again.[8]

Unverified Furnace Settings Linker is craftable in this pack, but the available sources do not describe exactly which settings it copies or how you apply them, so treat its behaviour as untested until you try it in game.

How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?

4 parts

Iron Furnaces in this pack is a ladder of furnace tiers, and the quest book walks you up it one step at a time. You'll first meet the Iron Furnace in the starting-out chapter. The rest of the ladder lives in the generators chapter.[3][4]

The quest ladder

  1. Start with the Iron Furnace (a quest in "?") and the Copper Furnace (a quest in "?"). Neither has a prerequisite inside the generators chapter.[3]
  2. The Silver Furnace (a quest in "?") unlocks after both of those quests.[3]
  3. The Golden Furnace (a quest in "?") comes after the Iron and Silver quests.[3]
  4. The Diamond Furnace (a quest in "?") follows Gold.[3]
  5. The tree branches here. The Crystal Furnace (a quest in "?") and the Emerald Furnace (a quest in "?") both unlock after Diamond.[3]
  6. The Obsidian Furnace (a quest in "?") needs both the Crystal and Emerald quests done.[3]
  7. The Netherite Furnace (a quest in "?") comes after Obsidian.[3]
  8. Past Netherite you get the Allthemodium Furnace (a quest in "?"), then the Vibranium Furnace (a quest in "?"), then the Unobtainium Furnace (a quest in "?"). Each quest unlocks after the one before it.[3]

How the tiers are crafted

The furnace recipes follow the same ladder. Each tier from Gold upward is built on a furnace of the tier below it, and the Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces each build on the previous metal's furnace. Some tiers have two routes. The Iron Furnace can start from a plain furnace or a Copper Furnace. The Silver Furnace can start from a Copper or an Iron Furnace. The Golden Furnace can start from an Iron or a Silver Furnace. The Obsidian Furnace can start from an Emerald or a Crystal Furnace.[5]

The pack also has upgrade items named for the step they cover, such as the Iron to Gold Furnace Upgrade and the Gold to Diamond Furnace Upgrade. They sit alongside the full furnace recipes for the same steps.[5]

Watch out: The pack changed the Netherite step. Both the Netherite Furnace recipe and the Obsidian to Netherite upgrade recipe are marked as changed by the pack, so don't trust mod defaults or other guides for these two.[5]

The Rainbow branch

The Rainbow Furnace is the side goal that rewards you for climbing the ladder. The Rainbow Core quest (a quest in "?") unlocks right after Netherite. Another quest (a quest in "?") asks for 8 Rainbow Plating, and it requires the Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, Diamond, Crystal, Emerald and Obsidian quests first. Once you've done both, the Rainbow Furnace quest (a quest in "?") opens. After that, Rainbow Coal (a quest in "?") unlocks.[3]

There is also a catch-all quest (a quest in "?") that wants a Rainbow Furnace plus the Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, Diamond, Emerald, Crystal, Obsidian and Netherite furnaces. It only opens once most of the ladder is behind you.[3]

Side quests in the same chapter

Once you have the Iron and Copper furnaces, a handful of utility quests open up. They cover the Wireless Heat Transmitter and Wireless Heat Receiver pair, the Furnace Settings Linker, the Furnace Wrapping Papers and the Furnace Spooka-lator. The augment quests are a separate group that all unlock from one shared earlier quest. They cover Augment: Speed, Augment: Fuel Efficiency, Augment: Blasting, Augment: Smoking, Augment: Factory and Augment: Generator.[3]

How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?

2 parts

The clearest link between Iron Furnaces and the rest of the pack is a recipe the pack adds itself. The Unobtainium Furnace is an ingredient in Philosopher's Fuel, alongside items and blocks from several other mods. So the top of the furnace chain also feeds into this recipe.[5]

Added by the pack, not a default from Iron Furnaces.

The Unobtainium Furnace is the last furnace in the pack's furnace questline. It comes after the Vibranium Furnace, which comes after the Allthemodium Furnace. If you follow the quests, you will already be on your way to this recipe.[3]

Quests

In the pack's quest data, the Iron Furnaces quests ask only for items from this mod. Most of them sit in the "generators" chapter and cover the furnace tiers, the augments, the Wireless Heat Transmitter and Wireless Heat Receiver, and the Rainbow items. A separate quest in the starting out chapter asks for the Iron Furnace early on. The quest sources here show no quest that combines Iron Furnaces items with items from another mod.[3][4]

Compatibility

The mod's project page says Iron Furnaces should be compatible with most mods. It names explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO.[1]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Iron Furnaces?

3 parts

Iron Furnaces shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: one quest in chapter_1_starting_out, and everything else in the generators chapter. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so I'm pointing to them by their quest refs. Every one of them just asks you to have a particular item.[3][4]

chapter_1_starting_out

This chapter has a single quest for the mod: a quest in "?" asks for an Iron Furnace. It unlocks after another quest in the same chapter.[4]

The generators chapter, in order

This is where the real furnace progression lives. It starts with the basic furnaces and climbs tier by tier up to the Rainbow Furnace and the modded-metal furnaces.[3]

  1. Start with a quest in "?" for the Iron Furnace and a quest in "?" for the Copper Furnace. Neither has a prerequisite.[3]
  2. Finishing both opens five quests: a quest in "?" (the Silver Furnace), a quest in "?" (the Wireless Heat Transmitter and the Wireless Heat Receiver), a quest in "?" (the Furnace Settings Linker), a quest in "?" (the Furnace Wrapping Papers) and a quest in "?" (the Furnace Spooka-lator).[3]
  3. a quest in "?" asks for the Golden Furnace. It comes after the Iron Furnace and Silver Furnace quests.[3]
  4. a quest in "?" asks for the Diamond Furnace and follows the Golden Furnace quest. After that, a quest in "?" (Crystal Furnace) and a quest in "?" (Emerald Furnace) both unlock from the Diamond Furnace quest.[3]
  5. a quest in "?" asks for the Obsidian Furnace and needs both the Crystal and Emerald quests. a quest in "?" then asks for the Netherite Furnace.[3]
  6. The Netherite quest opens two branches. In the first, a quest in "?" asks for the Allthemodium Furnace, then a quest in "?" asks for the Vibranium Furnace, and finally a quest in "?" asks for the Unobtainium Furnace. Each one unlocks after the one before it. In the second, a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Core.[3]
  7. a quest in "?" asks for 8 Rainbow Plating. It needs the copper, iron, silver, gold, diamond, crystal, emerald and obsidian furnace quests done first.[3]
  8. a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Furnace and needs both the Rainbow Plating quest and the Rainbow Core quest. a quest in "?" then asks for Rainbow Coal.[3]

There's also a collection quest, a quest in "?", that lists the Rainbow, Copper, Iron, Silver, Golden, Diamond, Emerald, Crystal, Obsidian and Netherite furnaces. It unlocks after the Netherite quest, the Rainbow Furnace quest and the other furnace quests below them.[3]

Augment quests

The augment quests sit off to the side. They all unlock after the same earlier quest, which isn't one of this mod's quests, and each asks for one augment. You can do them in any order.[3]

Unverified The sources don't show the quest titles, descriptions or rewards, and they don't say whether the items are consumed when you submit them. Check these in the in-game quest book.
