What is Just Dire Things?

3 parts

Just Dire Things is an automation-and-gear mod, and this pack ships version 1.5.7. It adds lots of machines focused on automation, plus new resources and tools and armor that accept upgrades. The pack's quest book describes it as one of Direwolf's creations that revolves around goo.[1][2][3][4]

It suits you if you enjoy tinkering: building machines like the Simple Block Breaker and Item Collector, then kitting yourself out with upgradeable gear.[2][5][6][7]

Goo is the core progression

You place a goo block, feed it a specific resource to activate it, then put an eligible block next to it to start the transformation. Each goo tier converts a stronger material, and higher tiers can do everything lower tiers can, much faster. After a transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs feeding again.[8]

Tier one goo also unlocks Primal Coal, and tier two goo unlocks Blaze Ember. Blazegold gives tools and armor the Lava Repair ability.[7]

Gear and power

Each resource tier has a matching armor set, and upgrades are installed at a smithing table. Celestigem armor stores 10,000 FE and Eclipse Alloy armor stores 500,000 FE. The Pocket Generator is the recommended way to keep that gear charged.[13][14][15][16]

Where it fits on the ATM Star path

The ATM Star chapter has a "Just Dire Things" quest quest, which asks for a Primogel Goo block. The "Paradox Machine" quest quest comes after it. That machine snapshots and duplicates blocks and entities in an area, costs a lot of power and Time Fluid, and many blocks and entities are blacklisted by configs.[4]

The mod also shows up in "Dragon Familiar in a Creature Catcher" quest. After the Occultism step, you throw a Creature Catcher at your Dragon Familiar to capture it.[4]

How do you get started with Just Dire Things?

5 parts

Just Dire Things is built around goo. You craft a goo block, feed it, and place blocks next to it to turn them into new materials. Each goo tier unlocks stronger materials and crafting options, so goo is where you start.[8][17]

Step 1: Primogel Goo

Primogel Goo is the first tier of goo, and it's crafted from simple Overworld materials. In the quest book, a quest in "Just Dire Things" comes right after the chapter's opening quest.[7][9]

  1. Craft a goo block and place it in your world.[8]
  2. Activate the goo by feeding it a resource it can consume. The goo block tells you which one.[8]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[8]

After a transformation there's a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. While it's inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already in progress finishes. Higher tier goo can do everything a lower tier can, and it's much faster.[8]

Step 2: Ferricore and Primal Coal

With tier one goo or higher you can turn Iron Blocks into Ferricore, which gives you Raw Ferricore and Ferricore Ingot. Ferricore ore is affected by fortune. The quest is "Ferricore" quest.[7][9]

Tier one goo or higher also turns Coal Blocks into Primal Coal, Primal Coal. The quest is a quest in "Just Dire Things".[7]

Step 3: Your first machine

The pack's quest book places the simple machines after the Ferricore quest. Simple versions don't need power, but they usually only affect a block or entity directly in front of them. You control how fast they work with the Speed(ticks) button. The Simple Block Breaker is a good first pick, and it needs a tool to break blocks.[7][18]

Step 4: Blazegold and the Blazejet Wand

Blazebloom Goo needs Nether materials to craft. With tier two goo or higher, Gold Blocks become Blazegold. Blazegold gives tools and armor Lava Repair: drop the item into a lava source block to repair it. The source block turns into obsidian in exchange. The quest is "Blazegold" quest.[7][10]

Then make the Blazejet Wand. It has air burst built in: right click to blast yourself in the direction you're facing. You take no fall damage while it's in your hand.[19][20]

Step 5: Upgrades

Tools and armor get their abilities from upgrades, which you apply at a smithing table. Upgrade: Blank is the base of every ability. Hold shift over a tool or armor piece to see which upgrades it accepts.[7][21][22]

Tip: Moving up a tier in the smithing table keeps the upgrades you've already installed, so you won't lose them as you progress.[13][21]

How does Just Dire Things work?

7 parts

Most Just Dire Things machines come in two flavours, simple and advanced. Simple ones need no power but only affect the block or entity directly in front of them. Advanced ones need power, cover a configurable area, have filters, and will automatically charge any Forge Energy items you place inside them.[18]

Simple machine controls

The redstone button decides when a machine runs. By default redstone is ignored, so it always runs. Low means it only runs when it is NOT getting a signal, High means it only runs while it is getting one, and Pulse does a single operation per pulse. For a simple machine that is usually one thing, like breaking 1 block. For an advanced machine it may mean everything in its area.[23]

The Speed(ticks) button sets how often the machine runs. The default is 20, which is once per second. You can go as low as 1 (every tick), but avoid that unless you really need it, because it can contribute to lag. The pack leaves the lowest allowed setting at 1, via general.minimum_machine_tick_speed.[23][24]

Advanced machine controls

Advanced machines can affect a large area. Click 'Render area' to see it in the world. The RAD button changes the radius, and the OFF button moves the centre of the area with an offset. Try them with 'Render area' switched on.[25]

Most advanced machines also have a row of filter slots for items, blocks or entities. You can drag from JEI or click a slot with a stack in your hand. For entities, use a spawn egg or a Creature Catcher. An allow/deny button flips the list: in allow mode only the listed things are affected, in deny mode everything except them is. Compare NBT makes filters stricter, for example matching enchantments or a specific sheep colour.[25]

Tip: Use the Machine Settings Copier to set up a row of machines quickly. Shift-right click a machine to copy its settings, then right click another to paste them. Click in the air to choose which settings to copy.[26]

What the machines do

  • Block Breaker: it needs a tool in it to break the block it faces, and it damages the tool (or uses power) on every block, just like a player would. The advanced version breaks in a much larger area. 'Filter block' picks which blocks to break, while 'filter items' picks which drops are allowed, and the direction button chooses which face is hit (handy for hammer-style tools).[27][28]
  • Clicker: it simulates right click, left click or hold click, optionally while sneaking. The target button picks what it clicks: blocks, air, hostile, passive, adult, child, player or all living. The advanced version covers an area with filters, so left click on hostiles gives you a mob farm and right click on adults gives you an animal breeder.[29][30]
  • Swapper: place two, then use a Ferricore Wrench on the first and then the second to bind them. They swap blocks and/or entities in front of them, and block entities like chests swap fine. Bound advanced swappers copy their Radius settings to each other.[31][32][33]
  • Dropper: you set the direction, the stack size per drop (1 by default, up to 64) and the pickup delay (0 by default). The advanced version has a 3x3 grid of droppable items, and the order of its filter slots sets the order items drop in. Its radius can't be changed, only its offset.[34][35]
  • Sensor: it detects blocks or entities in its area and emits a redstone signal. The advanced version counts matches, so you can emit a signal when there are fewer than 10 adult cows and use it to trigger a clicker. Right clicking a filter slot lets you filter on a specific block state.[36][37]
  • Fluid Collector and Fluid Placer: the simple collector holds only 1 fluid at a time, and the advanced one filters by fluid using buckets in its filter slots. The simple placer only places fluid once it has more than 1,000mb and nothing is in front of it. The advanced placer's filter chooses which blocks to place fluid on.[24][38][39][40][41]
  • Item Collector: it acts like an advanced machine. It vacuums up item entities in its area and deposits them in the inventory it is attached to. You can filter it and increase its pickup speed.[42]
  • Experience Holder: it stores levels, can top you up or drain you to a target level inside its area, and can collect nearby orbs. It also works as a fluid tank, converting experience into XP Fluid at 20mb per experience point.[43]

The Simple Block Breaker recipe is changed by this pack, so check the version below.[19]

Inventory access for automation

The Inventory Holder is like a super advanced armor stand with a chest-style inventory. Control-click an item in it to save a filter for that slot. Its buttons control how pipes and hoppers interact: 'Filtered Items Only' blocks inserts into unfiltered slots, and 'Compare Stack Sizes' limits slots to their saved stack size. Slots with a filter are ignored when extracting.[44]

The Player Accessor lets hoppers or pipes insert into or extract from a player's inventory. Its buttons choose which side reaches which slots, for example the top face equipping armor. In this pack, dimension blacklisting for it is switched off.[24][45]

Power

The Simple Coal Generator burns normal furnace fuel, but the specialised coals (Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal, Eclipse Ember) raise both the FE per tick and the total FE. In this pack it outputs 1,000 FE per tick and holds 1,000,000 FE. It makes 15 FE per burn tick of fuel, and the burn speed multiplier is 4, so coal's 1600 ticks burn four times faster.[24][46]

The Simple Fuel Generator uses refined fuels in 3 tiers. Here it outputs 5,000 FE per tick and holds 5,000,000 FE. Per mB of fuel it makes 450 FE for tier 2 (Blaze Ember), 1,300 FE for tier 3 (Voidflame) and 4,000 FE for tier 4 (Eclipse Ember).[24][47]

The Pocket Generator takes coal or the mod's upgraded coals, and higher tiers give more FE per tick. It charges other items at 5,000 FE per tick and holds 1,000,000 FE. It is the recommended way to charge the energy-using armor, such as Celestigem armor (10,000 FE per piece) and Eclipse Alloy armor (500,000 FE per piece).[14][15][16][24]

The Fuel Canister stores fuel for furnaces, generators and the Pocket Generator, so you don't burn a whole coal for one ore. Any fuel works except lava buckets, and there is no way to get the fuel back out. Here it holds up to 10,000,000 ticks of fuel and consumes 200 ticks per furnace operation.[24][48]

The Energy Transmitter is wireless power. Connect it to a generator, set an area of effect, and anything inside that can take Forge Energy gets filled from its buffer. In this pack it moves up to 1,000 RF per tick, holds 1,000,000 RF and loses 1 percent per block of distance. Transmitters in each other's area balance with no loss, and filters limit which machines receive power.[24][49]

Goo

Goo transforms blocks placed next to it. Craft a goo block, feed it the resource it asks for to activate it, then place an eligible block beside it. Afterwards there is a 10% chance it needs reactivating by feeding it another item, and while inactive it can't start new transformations, though ongoing ones finish. This matches the pack's goo death chance of 0.1, and goo dying is enabled.[8][24]

Higher tiers can do everything lower tiers can, and faster. Primogel Goo turns iron into Ferricore, Blazebloom Goo turns gold into Blazegold, VoidShimmer Goo turns diamonds into Celestigem, and Shadowpulse Goo turns Netherite into Eclipse Alloy. Primal Coal comes from placing a coal block next to Primogel Goo.[8][9][10][11][12][50]

Time and the Paradox

The Time Wand speeds up any ticking block, such as furnaces and crops. Each right click doubles the speed (2x, 4x, 8x...), up to 128x in this pack, and the boost lasts 30 seconds. It needs both Forge Energy and Time Fluid, scaled by how big the speed increase is. The pack raised the FE cost value to 750 from the mod default of 100. The Time Fluid cost value is 0.5, and the wand holds 100,000 FE. Fake players, such as clickers, can't use it here.[24][51]

Time Crystals grow in the Overworld (or any dimension besides the Nether and End) for stage 1, in the Nether for stage 2 and in the End for stage 3, unless the dimensions are customised. This pack doesn't customise them. The pack also changes how you get a Time Crystal in the Productive Bees centrifuge, from Time Fluid Source.[19][24]

Time Crystal, WaxChanged by the pack

Centrifuge (productivebees)

Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/justdirethings/honeycomb_time_crystal

The Paradox Machine snapshots an area: Raw Ores only for blocks, plus entities like zombies and cows. After you clear the area, activating it restores them. Each restored block or entity costs 250,000 FE and 50mb of Time Fluid. The machine holds 10,000,000 FE and 16,000mb of Time Fluid. A button toggles between Entities Only, Blocks Only or both, and restored entities may not be exactly identical to the snapshot.[24][52]

Watch out: Overuse builds up Paradox energy, shown in the machine's UI. Each restored block or entity adds 0.25, and at 100 the machine spawns a Paradox. A Paradox grows and absorbs blocks, items and entities in its area, with no getting them back. At this time the only known way to seal it shut is to feed it a Time Crystal.[24][52][53]

The pack keeps the restricted mob filter for the Paradox Machine switched on, which the config says means most modded mobs may not work well.[24]

How do you progress through Just Dire Things?

7 parts

Progression in Just Dire Things runs through four tiers of goo. Each tier lets you transform stronger blocks into new materials, and each tier of resources has an equivalent set of tools and armor. Here is the path from Ferricore all the way to Eclipse Alloy.[8][21]

How goo gating works

You craft a goo block and place it in the world, then activate it by feeding it the resource it asks for. After that, you place an eligible block next to it to start the transformation. After a transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. Higher tier goo can do everything lower tiers can, and does it much faster.[8]

Tier 1: Primogel Goo and Ferricore

Primogel Goo is the foundation. It is crafted from simple Overworld materials, and it can transform basic resources like Iron into Ferricore.[9]

The quest for it says it unlocks Ferricore and Primal Coal. Goo Spread on Iron Blocks with tier one goo or higher gives you Ferricore Ingot, and Ferricore ore is affected by fortune.[7]

In the quest book, simple machines such as the Simple Block Breaker are placed after the Ferricore quest. Upgrade: Blank is described there as the base of all abilities.[7]

The pack changed the recipes for several of the machines, so go by the in-pack recipe rather than the mod default.[19]

Tier 2: Blazebloom Goo and Blazegold

Blazebloom Goo captures the essence of the Nether and can transform Gold into Blazegold.[10]

The quest says it needs Nether materials and unlocks Blazegold and Blaze Ember. Goo Spread on Gold Blocks with tier two goo or higher gives you Blazegold, starting with Raw Blazegold. Blazegold tools and armor have the intrinsic ability Lava Repair, which repairs the item when you drop it into a lava source block, turning that source block into obsidian in exchange. The Simple Swapper quest sits after the Blazegold quest.[7]

You can craft Blazegold gear directly, or upgrade your Ferricore gear in a smithing table with Template: Blazegold. Templates carry over your installed upgrades.[13][19][21]

Tier 3: VoidShimmer Goo and Celestigem

VoidShimmer Goo is imbued with the energies of the End and lets you transform Diamonds into Celestigem. The in-game guide says this tier enables materials with properties such as enhanced energy storage and teleportation.[11]

The quest says it needs End materials and unlocks Celestigem and Void Flame. Goo Spread on Diamond Blocks with tier three goo or higher gives you Celestigem. The quests for the Advanced Block Breaker, Advanced Clicker and Advanced Dropper are placed after the Celestigem quest.[7]

Tier three goo also matters for Portal Fluid. Unstable Portal Fluid can only exist in the End, and Goo Spread with tier three goo or higher converts it into Portal Fluid, which the Advanced Portal Gun needs.[7][54]

The pack changed the recipes for the Advanced Block Breaker, Advanced Block Placer and Advanced Clicker. Advanced machines need power to operate, unlike the simple versions.[18][19]

Tier 4: Shadowpulse Goo and Eclipse Alloy

Shadowpulse Goo is the pinnacle of goo research and can transform Netherite into Eclipse Alloy. It is crafted from the rarest and most powerful materials.[12]

The quest calls it the fourth and final tier. It needs Ancient City and Warden materials and unlocks Eclipse Alloy, Eclipse Ember and the Time Crystal. Goo Spread on Netherite Blocks with tier four goo gives you Eclipse Alloy, starting with Raw Eclipse Alloy. Template: Eclipse Alloy upgrades Celestigem tools and armor to Eclipse Alloy while retaining enchantments and installed upgrades.[7]

The fuel line

Fuels climb the same ladder. Each step is Goo Spread on the blocks of the previous fuel:[7]

  1. Primal Coal: Goo Spread on Coal Blocks with tier one goo or higher.[7]
  2. Blaze Ember: Goo Spread on Primal Coal Blocks with tier two goo or higher.[7]
  3. Voidflame Coal: Goo Spread on Blaze Ember Blocks with tier three goo or higher.[7]
  4. Eclipse Ember: Goo Spread on Voidflame Coal Blocks with tier four goo.[7]

What each tier adds to your gear

According to the quest for the blank upgrade, on higher tier armor active abilities have reduced cooldowns and passive abilities have greater effects. Here is how the hoe, boots and chestplate grow:[7]

  • Hoe: Ferricore gives No Trampling and Accelerated Crop Growth I. Blazegold adds Lava Repair and Auto Harvesting, and bumps growth to II. Celestigem has growth III and accepts the Drops Teleporter upgrade.[7]
  • Boots: Ferricore accepts Step Assist and Jump Boost. Blazegold adds Ground Stomp, and Celestigem adds Negate Fall Damage.[7]
  • Chestplate: Ferricore accepts Invulnerability, an active ability that temporarily makes you immune to damage when activated and has a cooldown. Blazegold adds Extinguish.[7]
Tip: Check which upgrades a tool or armor piece accepts by looking at its tooltip while holding shift.[13][21]

How does Just Dire Things work with other mods?

4 parts

In this pack, Just Dire Things connects to other mods mostly through recipes the pack added or changed. Many of them use JDT materials as ingredients, so you'll often need to work through the mod to get at gear from elsewhere.[19]

Gear and machines that need JDT items

The pack added a recipe for Quarry Plus that includes JDT items among its inputs. Time in a Bottle works the same way: Time in a Bottle has a pack-added recipe that also takes a JDT item.[19]

Industrial Foregoing Souls

Two Industrial Foregoing Souls items are made in the Industrial Foregoing dissolution chamber with pack-added recipes. Both use Unstable Portal Fluid Source as an input: Soul Laser Base and Soul Surge.[19]

Tip: The JDT quests say Unstable Portal Fluid can only exist in the End, and that Goo Spread with tier three goo or higher turns it into Portal Fluid. Plan a trip to the End before you go after these Soul items.[7]

Productive Bees

The pack has changed the Productive Bees recipes that involve JDT materials. Goo blocks now convert bees into the matching metal bee, and the centrifuge turns honeycombs into JDT materials plus Wax.[19]

The Time Crystal has its own Productive Bees honeycomb in the centrifuge, shown in the first recipe below. The pack also changed the time bee spawn egg recipe, which is where the Time Crystal Block and the Time Fluid Bucket come into play. Both in-pack recipes are shown below, and the result of the honeycomb recipe is the Time Crystal.[19]

Which All the Mons quests use Just Dire Things?

5 parts

Just Dire Things has its own quest chapter, also called Just Dire Things, and a few related quests sit in The ATM Star chapter. In the quest text, the chapter centres on goo: you climb through four goo tiers, and the quests say each tier unlocks new materials, fuels and gear.[4][7]

The goo ladder

  1. The starting point is "Just Dire Things" quest in The ATM Star chapter, which describes the mod as revolving around goo. The first goo quest in the Just Dire Things chapter comes after it.[4][7]
  2. a quest in "Just Dire Things" asks for Primogel Goo, which the quest says needs basic Overworld materials. The quest lists Ferricore and Primal Coal under crafts unlocked.[7]
  3. a quest in "Just Dire Things" asks for Blazebloom Goo, which the quest says needs Nether materials. It lists Blazegold and Blaze Ember as crafts unlocked.[7]
  4. a quest in "Just Dire Things" asks for VoidShimmer Goo, which the quest says needs End materials. It lists Celestigem and Void Flame as crafts unlocked.[7]
  5. a quest in "Just Dire Things" asks for Shadowpulse Goo, which the quest says needs Ancient City and Warden materials. It lists Eclipse Alloy, Eclipse Ember and Time Crystal as crafts unlocked.[7]

Materials and fuels

Each material quest comes after its goo quest, and the quest text describes getting the material by performing Goo Spread on a block with goo of a certain tier or higher.[7]

Gear and upgrades

Tools, armor and bows have quests for several tiers, and most list valid upgrades in their text. For example, a quest in "Just Dire Things" covers the Ferricore Pickaxe, and a quest in "Just Dire Things" covers the Celestigem Paxel. In the quest tree, Ferricore gear comes after the Ferricore quest, Blazegold gear after the Blazegold quest, and Celestigem gear after the Celestigem quest.[7]

a quest in "Just Dire Things" asks for Upgrade: Blank, which the quest calls the base of all abilities. Individual upgrade quests follow, grouped under Tool Upgrades and Armor Upgrades. Template quests cover upgrading gear between tiers, and their text says enchantments and installed upgrades are retained: a quest in "Just Dire Things" for Template: Blazegold, a quest in "Just Dire Things" for Template: Celestigem and a quest in "Just Dire Things" for Template: Eclipse Alloy.[7]

Some armor upgrade quests describe timed effects. a quest in "Just Dire Things" for Upgrade: Invulnerability says it temporarily makes the player immune to damage when activated, with a cooldown. a quest in "Just Dire Things" for Upgrade: Stupefy says it temporarily makes nearby hostile mobs lose aggro to the player, also with a cooldown.[7]

Tip: The quest text says upgrades are applied at the smithing table, and that holding shift while hovering over a Just Dire Things tool or armor piece shows which upgrades are valid.[7]
Watch out: The quest text for the Ferricore and Blazegold pickaxes and the Celestigem paxel lists Ore Scanner as DISABLED, so don't plan around it.[7]

Machines and utility items

In the quest tree, many of the simple machines come after the Ferricore quest, including the Simple Clicker, Simple Dropper, Simple Block Breaker, Simple Block Placer, Simple Sensor, Simple Fluid Collector, Simple Fluid Placer, Simple Coal Generator and Simple Fuel Generator. Utility quests after Ferricore include the Ferricore Wrench, Machine Settings Copier, Item Collector and Pocket Generator.[7]

The Fuel Canister quest (a quest in "Just Dire Things") says it can store 50,000 fuel. The Blazegold stage adds quests such as Player Accessor, Energy Transmitter, Simple Swapper, Portal Gun, Totem of Death Recall and Creature Catcher. The Advanced versions of the Advanced Clicker, Advanced Dropper and Advanced Block Breaker come after the Celestigem quest.[7]

Which Just Dire Things config options matter?

6 parts

Most of the Just Dire Things server config in this pack is left at the mod defaults, so it is easy to see what is different. The file is config/justdirethings-server.toml, and the options below are the ones you are most likely to run into.[24]

What the pack changed

The one value the pack explicitly changed from the mod default is the Time Wand's energy price. time_wand.time_wand_rf_cost is set to 750 here, up from the mod default of 100. The cost is multiplied by the acceleration amount, so going from 128 to 256 charges 256 times this value in FE. Plan your power supply with that in mind.[24]

The Ore Scanner ability is switched off: abilities.orescanner is set to false. Every other ability toggle in the file is set to true.[24]

Time Wand

Tools and abilities

The limits on how many blocks a tool can break with abilities like ore miner or tree feller are at the mod defaults. Ferricore tools break up to 64 blocks (abilities.tool_max_break_ferricore). Blazegold tools break 128 (abilities.tool_max_break_blazegold). Celestigem tools break 192 (abilities.tool_max_break_celestigem). Eclipse Alloy tools break 256 (abilities.tool_max_break_eclipsealloy).[24]

Power and generators

All the power options below are at the mod defaults.[24]

Paradox Machine and goo

The Paradox Machine uses its default costs. Each cost is multiplied by the number of blocks or entities being restored.[24]

paradox_machine.paradox_restricted_mobs is true here, so cloned mobs use stricter data filtering and most modded mobs may not work well. The option's own description recommends false, with any problem mobs added to the machine's deny entity tag instead. It also warns that false carries a small chance of item dupe bugs.[24]

Goo can die when it finishes crafting, because goo.goo_can_die is true. The chance is 0.1, which is 10% (goo.goo_death_chance). Dead goo needs reviving by right clicking it with an item.[24]

Dimension options

Player Accessor dimension blacklisting is off (player_accessor.player_accessor_dimensional_blacklisting is false), and the blacklist list is empty.[24]
