Theurgy is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.76.0. Theurgy is an open-source magic mod built around classical alchemy to replicate and transmute matter, and create magical artifacts. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Theurgy?

1 part

Theurgy is an open-source magic mod built around classical alchemy, used to replicate and transmute matter and to create magical artifacts. Instead of the usual four elements, it works with Sulfur, Salt and Mercury, handled through a group of processes called Spagyrics. This pack ships Theurgy 1.76.0.[1][2]

Where the quest book puts it

In this pack's quest book, Theurgy has its own chapter in the "Magic" group. It is chapter 64 of 70 in the book and holds 44 quests. The chapter opens with "Theurgy" quest, which asks for a copper ingot because lots of Theurgy machines need copper.[3]

From that first quest the chapter splits into branches:[3]

Tip: Heat matters early. The Liquefaction Cauldron, Calcination Oven, Mercury Distiller and Incubator all need it, and the quest book says only two machines can supply it: the Pyromantic Brazier (fed with furnace fuel) and the Caloric Flux Emitter (bound to a machine, then powered). The heat quests are "Man you're Hot!" quest, "Furnace like Heat" quest and "Wireless Heat" quest.[3]

The chapter has 10 more quests that this guide doesn't cover. You'll find them in the quest book itself.[3]

How do you get started with Theurgy?

3 parts

Theurgy is built around three alchemical ingredients: Sulfur, Salt and Mercury. Your first goal is to get a heat source and then make Mercury and Salt. The order below follows the Theurgy quest chapter, so you can tick off quests as you go.[1][3]

Step by step

  1. Make a Pyromantic Brazier first. It is the simplest heat source: place it under a machine and feed it furnace fuel such as coal, logs or dried kelp blocks. This is the "Furnace like Heat" quest, "Furnace like Heat" quest.[3][4]
  2. Build a Mercury Distiller and put it on top of the heat source. Right-click it with items to distill them into Mercury. Better items give more: a diamond gives 10 Mercury, while stone needs 10 pieces for 1 Mercury. See "Making Mercury" quest and the follow-up "Mercury" quest, which gives you the Mercury Shard.[3][4]
  3. Build a Calcination Oven, also on top of a heat source, and right-click it with items to cook Salt out of them. Salt is needed later for incubating Alchemical Sulfur. This is "Desalination Plant" quest.[3][4]
  4. Set up Sal Ammoniac production. Put a Sal Ammoniac Tank on the bottom with a Sal Ammoniac Accumulator on top. The accumulator is where water and crystals go, and the tank holds the finished Sal Ammoniac. See "Making Sal Ammoniac" quest.[3]
  5. Build a Liquefaction Cauldron with a heater beneath it. Add the liquid Sal Ammoniac and then the item you want turned into Alchemical Sulfur. It is working when it bubbles. This is "Making Alchemical Sulfur" quest, which the quest book calls the meat of the mod.[3][4]
  6. Build an Incubator to turn Sulfur, Salt and Mercury back into items. It needs a Sulfur, a Salt and a Mercury vessel placed horizontally next to it: Incubator Sulfur Vessel, Incubator Salt Vessel and Incubator Mercury Vessel.[3][4]

Salts: the first recipes to run

There are several kinds of Salt, and the kind matters when you incubate. Mineral Salt is for ores and metals, Plant Salt is for things like wheat, and the quests also cover Strata Salt and Creature Salt. The pack changed several of the calcination recipes. Plant Salt now comes from any log, leaves, crops or saplings, and Mineral Salt comes from any ore, raw material, ingot or gem.[3][5]

Strata Salt is the most basic kind and comes from plain blocks. In this pack any cobblestone works for it. The quest book says 5 Strata Salt can be turned into Mineral Salt.[3][5]

Sal Ammoniac Crystals are worth it

You can run the accumulator on water alone, but then 1,000mb of water gives only 100mb of Sal Ammoniac. Add a Sal Ammoniac Crystal and the same 1,000mb of water gives 1,000mb, ten times as much. The pack adds crushing and enriching recipes that turn Sal Ammoniac ore into the crystal.[3][5]

Tip: Want heat without feeding fuel? The Caloric Flux Emitter heats a machine remotely. Sneak-right-click the machine to bind the emitter to it, then place the emitter on a Mercury Flux source such as a Mercury Catalyst. One emitter can only be set to a single machine.[3][4]

How does Theurgy work?

6 parts

Theurgy is built around the alchemical elements Sulfur, Salt and Mercury, and a group of processes called Spagyrics for handling them. This section covers how the machines connect to each other: heat, flux, vats, the incubator and logistics. The in-game Hermetica book is the full guide. You get it by crafting a book with 2 sand.[1]

Heat comes first

The Calcination Oven, Mercury Distiller, Liquefaction Cauldron and Incubator all go on top of a heating device. The basic one is the Pyromantic Brazier, which heats apparatus placed above it. Right-click it with a fuel item to insert the fuel. A hopper can also feed it.[4][5]

  • Mercury Distiller: extracts Alchemical Mercury from items. Right-click it with ingredients to add them.[4][5]
  • Liquefaction Cauldron: extracts Alchemical Sulfur from items, using a Solvent. Right-click it with ingredients to add them.[4][5]
  • Incubator: recombines Alchemical Sulfur, Salt and Mercury into items. It needs an Incubator Vessel for each of the three ingredient types, placed horizontally next to it.[4][5]

Each vessel is filled by right-clicking it with the matching alchemical item: Incubator Sulfur Vessel takes Sulfur, Incubator Salt Vessel takes Salt and Incubator Mercury Vessel takes Mercury.[4][5]

Sal Ammoniac is the solvent for the cauldron. You make it with a Sal Ammoniac Accumulator placed on top of a Sal Ammoniac Tank. Right-click the accumulator with water buckets. The water is consumed and slowly fills the tank below. Adding Sal Ammoniac Crystals to the accumulator speeds this up.[4]

Vats

The Fermentation Vat is required for transmutation, which converts between types of matter such as metals and gems. The Digestion Vat is required for exaltation, which converts between tiers of matter such as iron to gold. Both work the same way. Right-click with ingredients to place them inside. Then shift-right-click with an empty hand to close or open the vat, which starts or stops processing.[4][5]

Mercury flux and remote heating

The Mercury Catalyst turns mercury from crystal form into flux form, which is pure energy for certain processes. Right-click it with Mercury Shard items. They are consumed slowly to fill its internal energy storage with mercury flux.[4][5]

The Caloric Flux Emitter turns that flux into Caloric Flux, which is transferable heat. It can stand in for the brazier under an apparatus. Sneak-right-click the apparatus to set it as the target, then place the emitter on a Mercury Flux source such as the catalyst. As long as flux keeps arriving, the target stays heated. The maximum range is 8 blocks.[4]

Tip: The Caloric Flux Emitter is enabled by default. An active redstone signal disables it, and while disabled it sends no heat to the target. So you can control the heating with redstone.[4]

There are two recipes for the emitter. One uses a campfire and the other a lava bucket.[5]

Sulfur reformation array

Replicating Alchemical Sulfur uses a reformation array. The Source pedestal holds the sulfur to be reformed. The Target pedestal holds the sulfur it should become. The result appears in the Result pedestal. The Sulfuric Flux Emitter powers the array. Right-click the Source, Target and Reformation pedestals with it to set them as its targets. Then place it on a Mercury Flux source such as the Mercury Catalyst.[4]

Mercurial logistics

Mercurial Logistics is Theurgy's own network for moving items and fluids. The Mercurial Item Extractor and Mercurial Fluid Extractor pull items or fluids out of a block into the network. The Mercurial Item Inserter and Mercurial Fluid Inserter push them into a block from the network.[4][5]

  1. Right-click the target block with the extractor or inserter to place it on that block.[4]
  2. Right-click the placed extractor or inserter with a cable to connect it to the network.[4]
  3. To join several wires, place a Mercurial Connection Node and run wires from it to other nodes or logistics blocks.[4][5]

How do you progress through Theurgy?

6 parts

The quest chapter describes Theurgy in this pack as a chain of machines. You gather salts, make Mercury and Sal Ammoniac, turn items into Alchemical Sulfur, and then change, ferment or incubate that Sulfur. Here is that path in quest order, with the tier breakdowns along the way.[3]

Step 1: Salts and Mercury

Two quests open the chapter. "Desalination Plant" quest points you to the Calcination Oven. The quest says you cook items in it with a heat source to get salts, and that different items give different salts. It also says the salts have tiers that go up the rarer they are. "Making Mercury" quest points you to the Mercury Distiller, which the quest says turns items into Mercury. It says rich items pay off: 1 Diamond gives 10 Mercury, while Stone takes 10 Stone for 1 Mercury.[3]

The quests say both machines need heat. "Furnace like Heat" quest describes the Pyromantic Brazier as the simple option: place it under the machine and feed it furnace fuel like coal, logs or dried kelp blocks. "Wireless Heat" quest describes the Caloric Flux Emitter as wireless heat: Shift Right Click it to bind it to a machine, then place it and power it. The quest says it can't be set to multiple machines.[3]

The salt tiers

Calcination (theurgy)

Recipe id: theurgy:calcination/alchemical_salt_mineral_from_strata_salt

Strata Salt into Mineral Salt. This is the mod's own recipe, not changed by the pack.

Calcination (theurgy)

Recipe id: theurgy:calcination/alchemical_salt_creature_from_plant_salt

Plant Salt into Creature Salt. Also the mod's own recipe, not changed by the pack.

The pack has changed the plant and mineral salt recipes that take items from tags. It has also changed several strata ones, covering stone, cobblestone, concrete, dirt, sand, sandstone and netherrack. So don't assume the mod's default inputs apply here.[5]

Step 2: Sal Ammoniac and Alchemical Sulfur

"Making Sal Ammoniac" quest has you stack a Sal Ammoniac Accumulator on top of a Sal Ammoniac Tank. The quest says the accumulator holds water (10 Buckets) and a stack of crystals, and the tank holds the finished Sal Ammoniac, up to 2 Buckets.[3]

"Why Machines?" quest explains why you want Sal Ammoniac Crystal. The quest says water alone turns 1000mb into 100mb of Sal Ammoniac, while adding a crystal makes the same 1000mb give 1000mb, which is 10 times the output. The pack adds crushing and enriching recipes that turn Sal Ammoniac ores into crystals.[3][5]

Then "Making Alchemical Sulfur" quest brings in the Liquefaction Cauldron. The quest says it needs an item, Sal Ammoniac, and a heater beneath it (the brazier or the emitter). It calls Alchemical Sulfur the meat of the mod, and says the cauldron bubbles when it is working.[3]

Step 3: What Mercury unlocks

"Mercury" quest says Mercury can be used for three different things: incubation, power creation and logistics.[3]

Step 4: Reformation, fermentation and digestion

The quests say reformation changes one Sulfur into another, or uses Alchemical Niter to make more. It is a four-step setup: first "Step 1: Source Pedestal" quest, then "Step 2: Target Pedestal" quest, then "Step 3: Result Pedestal" quest. Last is "Step 4: Powering it" quest: Shift Right Click all 3 pedestals with the Sulfuric Flux Emitter, then place it and power it.[3]

The Fermentation Vat is how the quest says you turn Sulfur into Niter. You load it, Shift Right Click to close it, and wait. The quest calls Fermentation Starter a very cheap replacement for other items in fermenting. After that comes the Digestion Vat, which the quest describes as the way to change Niter into different forms, to a higher or lower tier.[3]

How does Theurgy work with other mods?

3 parts

Theurgy's alchemy chain connects to several other mods in this pack, mostly through incubation recipes that output items from those mods and liquefaction recipes that create extra alchemical sulfurs. Here is what the recipes actually show.[5]

Metals and gems from incubation

Theurgy incubation recipes can produce a whole set of ores and gems from the alltheores namespace. Each of these recipes is marked as changed by the pack, so don't assume the mod's default values apply.[5]

Tin IngotChanged by the pack

Incubation (theurgy)

Recipe id: theurgy:incubation/ingots_tin_from_alchemical_sulfur_tin

Tin is one example. The other ingots and gems follow the same pattern with their own sulfur.

Items the pack added to incubation

The pack also adds its own incubation recipes that output items from other mods. Each one uses its own pack-defined alchemical sulfur type.[5]

RuneAdded by the pack

Making the extra sulfurs

Those pack-defined sulfurs, such as Runic Sulfur and Iesnium Sulfur, are made in the liquefaction process, with recipes the pack added. Each one uses Sal Ammoniac plus either the finished item or, in many cases, a matching ore, gem, ingot, raw material or dust from the lists below.[5]

Tip: The pack quests say a sulfur-attuned Divination Rod gets attuned to whatever item's alchemical sulfur you craft it with. The Precious Materials rod is described as finding items up to Allthemodium, so it's a handy way to hunt for modded materials.[3]

Which All the Mons quests use Theurgy?

7 parts

Theurgy has its own chapter in the pack's quest book, called Theurgy. It sits in the Magic group, is chapter 64 of 70, and holds 44 quests. Here is how it flows, so you can follow it in order.[3]

Getting started

The chapter opens with "Theurgy" quest, which asks for a copper ingot. Its text says lots of the Theurgy machines need copper, so that is where it tells you to start. "Desalination Plant" quest (asks for a Calcination Oven) and "Making Mercury" quest (asks for a Mercury Distiller) both come after it.[3]

Heat

"Man you're Hot!" quest is a checkmark quest. Its text says some Theurgy machines need heat, and that you can only use two machines as heat sources. It lists the Liquefaction Cauldron, Calcination Oven, Mercury Distiller and Incubator as the machines that use heat. Those two heat sources are the next two quests.[3]

Salts

One quest per salt type comes after the Desalination Plant: "Strata Salt" quest (asks for Alchemical Salt Strata), "Mineral Salt" quest (asks for Alchemical Salt Mineral), "Creature Salt" quest (asks for Alchemical Salt Creature) and "Plant Salt" quest (asks for Alchemical Salt Plant). The creature salt quest text says that, currently, there is only one way to craft it, and hopes for more in newer updates.[3]

Mercury and logistics

"Mercury" quest follows Making Mercury and asks for a Mercury Shard. Its text says mercury can be used for incubation, power creation and logistics, and the next quests in the chapter branch from it.[3]

Several more quests follow Logistics with Mercury: "Fluid Movement" quest asks for a Mercurial Fluid Inserter and a Mercurial Fluid Extractor. "Of course there's a Wrench" quest asks for the Mercurial Wand. "Wires go here, Wires go there" quest asks for a Mercurial Connection Node. "Item Movement" quest asks for a Mercurial Item Inserter and a Mercurial Item Extractor. a quest in "Theurgy" asks for a Mercurial List Filter and an Mercurial Attribute Filter.[3]

Sal Ammoniac and Alchemical Sulfur

"Sal Ammoniac" quest asks for a water bucket, and "Why Machines?" quest asks for a Sal Ammoniac Crystal. Both lead into "Making Sal Ammoniac" quest, which asks for a Sal Ammoniac Accumulator and a Sal Ammoniac Tank. After that comes "Making Alchemical Sulfur" quest, asking for a Liquefaction Cauldron, and then "Alchemical Sulfurs" quest. Its text describes three paths for processing sulfurs: fermentation and digestion, incubation, and reformation.[3]

The three sulfur paths

Divination rods

"Divination Rods" quest asks for a stick, and its text explains that you select a block or item with the rod and it then looks for it. Every rod quest comes after it. The tiered rods are a quest in "Theurgy" (Glass Divination Rod), a quest in "Theurgy" (Iron Divination Rod), a quest in "Theurgy" (Diamond Divination Rod) and a quest in "Theurgy" (Netherite Divination Rod). The quest text says the Glass rod finds ores that a Stone Pickaxe can mine, and the Iron rod finds ores that an Iron Pickaxe can mine. The material rods are a quest in "Theurgy" (Divination Rod: Abundant Materials), a quest in "Theurgy" (Divination Rod: Common Materials), a quest in "Theurgy" (Divination Rod: Rare Materials) and a quest in "Theurgy" (Divination Rod: Precious Materials). The last one is a quest in "Theurgy" (Divination Rod: Amethyst), which the quest text says finds Budding Amethyst blocks instead of ores.[3]

What changed in Theurgy between versions?

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Theurgy 1.76.0. The mod has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[2]

  • 1.76.0 (performance): wire sync no longer scans chunk by chunk. It now uses per-player reference counting instead.[6]
  • 1.73.1 (bug fix): clearable blocks now clear the items they contain.[7]
  • 1.71.0 (new feature): a Japanese translation (ja_jp) was added.[8]
  • 1.70.0 (bug fix): vats no longer complete recipes instantly after being moved as part of a Create contraption.[9]
  • 1.68.0 (new feature): the Simplified Chinese translation (zh_cn) was updated.[10]

Since the pack ships 1.76.0, every change in that list is already part of the Theurgy you get in All the Mons 1.3.0.[2][6]

This is not the full history. The changelogs I have only cover the versions above, and the mod's release page on GitHub lists the changes for every version.[6]
