What is Mutant Monsters?
2 parts
Mutant Monsters turns Minecraft's mobs into much scarier versions of themselves. You fight mutated creatures like the Mutant Zombie, Skeleton, Creeper and Enderman, and each one comes with its own attacks and its own reward. The pack uses version 8.0.8 of the mod, built for 1.20.1 Forge.[1][2]
What you get from it
- Mutant Zombie: a hulking brute with smash attacks. Beating it gets you the Hulk Hammer, a weapon that slams the ground and knocks enemies back.[1]
- Mutant Skeleton: a deadly marksman. You craft Mutant Skeleton Armor from its bones.[1]
- Mutant Creeper: causes chain explosions and drops a Creeper Minion Egg. Hatch it for an explosive minion, and use a Creeper Minion Tracker to track and control your minions.[1]
- Mutant Enderman: a teleporting terror. Cut off its hand to get the Endersoul Hand, which gives you teleportation and block manipulation powers.[1]
- Mutant Snow Golem: a strong ally that throws massive chunks of ice at enemies.[1]
- Chemical X: a mysterious liquid that mutates mobs. Use it on a pig that ate a fermented spider eye and you get a Spider Pig.[1]
The mod has to be installed on both the client and the server.[1]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack's quest book puts Mutant Monsters in the Mystical Agriculture chapter, which is in the Resource Generation group (chapter 12 of 44 in the book). The mod has a single quest there, a quest in "Mystical Agriculture", and it has no title of its own. It asks you to obtain the Endersoul Hand, the item you get by cutting off a Mutant Enderman's hand.[1][3]
In the quests we can see, no prerequisite is listed for it. It sits beside other quests that show no prerequisite, such as "Welcome to Mystical Agriculture" quest, which is a checkmark quest, and a quest in "Mystical Agriculture", which asks for the master infusion crystal. None of the quests shown names it as the one that comes before them. The chapter has 207 quests and the rest are in the quest book, so check there for anything that follows it.[3]
How do you get started with Mutant Monsters?
4 parts
Mutant Monsters is all about hunting big, scary versions of vanilla mobs and turning their drops into gear. Your first steps here are about finding a mutant, then deciding which reward to chase first.[1]
Step 1: Know that mutants are rare
In this pack the spawn weight for the mutant zombie, skeleton, creeper and enderman is set to 0.05, as a percentage of their vanilla counterpart's weight. You can see the values in mutant_skeleton_spawn_weight, mutant_zombie_spawn_weight, mutant_creeper_spawn_weight and mutant_enderman_spawn_weight. Mutants can spawn in every biome and dimension where their vanilla counterparts can be found, so there is no special place to look for them.[4]
The other route is Chemical X, which mutates mobs. The pack's mutant_x_conversions option lists what each mob turns into: creeper, enderman, skeleton, snow golem and zombie become their mutant versions, and a pig becomes a Spider-Pig. How you get Chemical X is not covered in the sources I have, so check in game.[1][5][6]
Step 2: Mutant Skeleton armor
The Mutant Skeleton is a deadly marksman, and its bones are what you craft the armor from. The pieces build on each other: the rib cage and the arms feed into the chestplate, while the leggings and boots come from the leg parts. Here are the in-pack recipes.[1][7]

Step 3: Creeper Minions and the tracker
A Mutant Creeper drops a Creeper Minion Egg when it dies. Hatch it to get a Creeper Minion, or destroy the egg to get a Creeper Shard. The Creeper Minion Tracker is the device you use to tame and control your minions.[1][6]
The pack changed the tracker's recipe from the mod's own, so go by this one.[7]

Step 4: The Endersoul Hand
Cut the hand off a Mutant Enderman to get the Endersoul Hand, which gives you teleportation and block manipulation powers. In this pack its maximum travel distance is 128, set in endersoul_hand_teleport_distance, and that is also the top of the option's range.[1][5]
The quest book also has a quest that asks you to obtain the Endersoul Hand: a quest in "Mystical Agriculture", in the Mystical Agriculture chapter of the Resource Generation group.[3]
How does Mutant Monsters work?
6 parts
Mutant Monsters isn't a machine mod. The sources describe mobs, drops, gear and companions, not power, fluids or multiblocks. So this section covers how the mod's systems work: how mutants appear, how Chemical X changes mobs, how the Endersoul Hand and Creeper Minions work, and the skeleton armor chain.[1]
How mutants spawn
Mutant Creepers, Endermen, Skeletons and Zombies can spawn in every biome and dimension where their vanilla versions can be found. Their spawn weight is set as a percentage of the vanilla mob's weight. In this pack each of them is set to 0.05, with an allowed range of 0.0 to 20.0: mutant_creeper_spawn_weight, mutant_enderman_spawn_weight, mutant_skeleton_spawn_weight and mutant_zombie_spawn_weight.[4]
You can also make mutants yourself. Each mutant has its own spawn egg, and the Spider-Pig has one too.[6]
Chemical X and mutations
Chemical X is the mod's mutation liquid. It turns mobs into powerful mutants or strange new creatures. It comes as an item, a potion, a splash potion, a lingering potion and a tipped arrow.[1][6]
What a mob turns into is set by mutant_x_conversions. In this pack the list is: creeper to Mutant Creeper, enderman to Mutant Enderman, skeleton to Mutant Skeleton, snow golem to Mutant Snow Golem, zombie to Mutant Zombie, and pig to Spider-Pig. The option's description says a target that has no entry in the list will only explode and take damage.[5]
For the Spider-Pig, feed a pig a Fermented Spider Eye, then throw Chemical X at it. The mod has an advancement for exactly that.[1][6]
Mutant drops and tools
- The Mutant Zombie drops the Hulk Hammer, which slams the ground and knocks back enemies.[1]
- The Mutant Enderman's hand gives you the Endersoul Hand, which grants teleportation and block manipulation powers.[1][6]
- In this pack the Endersoul Hand can travel up to 128 blocks, which is also the top of the allowed range (0 to 128). It's set by endersoul_hand_teleport_distance. If the jump can't happen you get the message "Unable to teleport to location".[5][6]
- The Mutant Creeper drops a Creeper Minion Egg when it dies.[1]
Creeper Minions and the tracker
Creeper Minions are explosive allies hatched from a Creeper Minion Egg. Destroying an egg gives you a Creeper Shard, which causes explosions when used on terrain. You tame and track minions with the Creeper Minion Tracker.[1][6]
The tracker's screen has these controls: Blast Radius, Destroys Blocks, Explosion (Continuous or One-time), Health, Ride On Shoulder and Always Show Name.[6]
The pack changed the tracker's recipe from the mod's own, so use this one:[7]

Mutant Skeleton armor
Mutant Skeleton armor is crafted from the bones the Mutant Skeleton drops. The mod's own recipes chain the parts together: ribs make a rib cage, a limb and shoulder pad make arms, and those parts combine into the armor pieces. These recipes are unchanged by the pack.[1][7]

Wearing the full set also matters for the advancement "No Bones About It": kill a Mutant Skeleton with a crossbow while wearing all of it.[6]
Where the pack uses Mutant Monsters items
- The Creeper Shard is an ingredient in the pack's Energy Condenser MK2 recipe, made in the Extended Crafting table.[8]
- The Unobtainium Seeds recipe, also made in the Extended Crafting table, uses the Creeper Shard, the Hulk Hammer (Hulk Hammer), the Endersoul Hand and the Creeper Minion Tracker.[9]
- The pack's Gateways recipe for the mutant monsters gate pearl uses the Endersoul Hand as its middle item.[10]
- For Woot factories, the pack puts the Mutant Creeper, Enderman, Skeleton, Snow Golem, Zombie and Spider-Pig in tier 4.[11]
How do you progress through Mutant Monsters?
4 parts
In this pack, Mutant Monsters shows up as a short chain of craftable armor pieces, one pack-changed tracker recipe, and a few items that the pack's own endgame recipes ask for. Here is how it all fits together.[3][7][9]
Where the quest book puts it
The pack's quest book has one Mutant Monsters quest, a quest in "Mystical Agriculture", which asks you to obtain the Endersoul Hand. It sits in the Mystical Agriculture chapter (group "Resource Generation", chapter 12 of 44 in the book) and lists no prerequisite quest.[3]
It is not a dead end. In the quest book, a quest in "Mystical Agriculture" comes after both "Insanium Essence" quest (the Tier 6 essence quest) and the Endersoul Hand quest. The pack's Unobtainium Seeds recipe also uses the Endersoul Hand, so you need one for that seed.[3][9]
Mutant Skeleton armor chain
The Mutant Skeleton Chestplate, Mutant Skeleton Leggings and Mutant Skeleton Boots are crafted in steps, and the Mutant Skeleton Rib Cage and Mutant Skeleton Arms are intermediate pieces on the way to the chestplate. All of these are the mod's own recipes, and the recipe dump shows no pack changes to them. The recipes below show each step.[7]

Late-game uses
Several Mutant Monsters items are required by the pack's own endgame recipes, so they are worth collecting even if you skip the armor.[8][9][10]
- Unobtainium Seeds: the pack's Tier 6 seed crafting script makes the Unobtainium Seeds on an Extended Crafting table. The recipe (shown below this list) includes the Hulk Hammer and other Mutant Monsters items.[9]
- Energy Condenser MK2: the pack's custom Extended Crafting table recipe for the Energy Condenser MK2 includes the Creeper Shard.[8]
- Gateway pearl: the pack adds a gate pearl for the "mutant_monsters_gate" gateway, built around the Endersoul Hand. The pearls for the other gateways are made the same way, each with its own centre item.[10]

How does Mutant Monsters work with other mods?
2 parts
Mutant Monsters is mostly about fighting big mutated mobs, but in this pack some of its drops also show up as ingredients in recipes from other mods. These are the connections the pack's recipes and quests confirm.[1][7]
Recipes that use Mutant Monsters items
- Gate Pearl: the pack adds a shaped crafting recipe that makes a Gate Pearl and uses the Endersoul Hand as its Mutant Monsters ingredient.[7]
- Unobtainium Seeds: the pack adds an Extended Crafting table recipe for Unobtainium Seeds that uses several Mutant Monsters items. The exact recipe is shown below.[7][9]
- Energy Condenser MK2: the pack changed this Extended Crafting table recipe for Energy Condenser MK2. The Creeper Shard is one of its ingredients, next to items from ProjectE, Draconic Evolution, Cyclic and other mods.[7][8]
- Infinity Chestplate: the pack also changed this Extended Crafting table recipe for the Infinity Chestplate. The Mutant Skeleton Chestplate is one of the chestplates from other mods that it asks for.[7]

Quest book
The Mystical Agriculture chapter of the quest book (group "Resource Generation") has a quest for the Endersoul Hand: a quest in "Mystical Agriculture". It asks you to obtain the item, and no prerequisite is listed for it. The hand comes from cutting it off a Mutant Enderman. Many of that chapter's quests are not shown in the sources here, so check the quest book for the rest.[1][3]
Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Mutant Monsters?
2 parts
The pack's quest book asks for a Mutant Monsters item in just one place: the Mystical Agriculture chapter.[3]
The Endersoul Hand quest
The quest a quest in "Mystical Agriculture" has a single task: hand in the Endersoul Hand. The book lists no prerequisite for it.[3]
The book doesn't say how to obtain the item, so check the mod's own pages for that.[3]
What it unlocks
The Endersoul Hand quest comes before a quest in "Mystical Agriculture", the Unobtainium Seeds quest. That quest asks for the unobtainium seeds themselves and lists two prerequisites: "Insanium Essence" quest (the Insanium Essence quest) and the Endersoul Hand quest.[3]
Which Mutant Monsters config options matter?
3 parts
Mutant Monsters has a common config for spawn weights and a server config for the Endersoul Hand and Mutant X conversions. Here is exactly how the pack sets them.[4][5]
Mutant spawn weights
The mutant zombie, skeleton, creeper and enderman each have a spawn weight option. Each one is a percentage of the matching vanilla mob's spawn weight, and the allowed range is 0.0 ~ 20.0. Mutants can spawn in every biome and dimension where their vanilla counterparts can be found.[4]
- mutant_creeper_spawn_weight is set to 0.05 in this pack.[4]
- mutant_enderman_spawn_weight is set to 0.05 in this pack.[4]
- mutant_skeleton_spawn_weight is set to 0.05 in this pack.[4]
- mutant_zombie_spawn_weight is set to 0.05 in this pack.[4]
All of them sit at the same value, so no single mutant is favoured over the others. If you want to change how often you run into them, these are the options to edit.[4]
Endersoul Hand range
endersoul_hand_teleport_distance controls the maximum distance the Endersoul Hand can be used to travel to. The pack sets it to 128, and the allowed range is 0 ~ 128, so that is the top of the range.[5]
Mutant X conversions
mutant_x_conversions decides what a mob turns into when it is infested with a Mutant X potion. If a mob is not on the list, the target only explodes and takes damage. Each entry is written as the original mob id, a comma, then the mutant id, and if you leave out the namespace it defaults to minecraft.[5]
This is the full list of conversions the pack uses:[5]
- Creeper becomes Mutant Creeper.[5]
- Enderman becomes Mutant Enderman.[5]
- Skeleton becomes Mutant Skeleton.[5]
- Snow Golem becomes Mutant Snow Golem.[5]
- Zombie becomes Mutant Zombie.[5]
- Pig becomes Spider Pig.[5]
What changed in Mutant Monsters between versions?
5 parts
Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2 ships Mutant Monsters 8.0.8 for Forge on 1.20.1. The mod was already in the pack by 0.0.45.4 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelog, newest first.[2]
8.0.8 (17 November 2025)
- Version 8.0.8 fixed a desync where a mutant zombie vanished on the client but stayed on the server if it was killed while already on fire, for example with a flame enchanted bow.[12]
- Version 8.0.8 also fixed mutant creeper attacks causing NaN delta movement when the creeper and its target are at the exact same position.[12]
8.0.7 (14 February 2024)
- Version 8.0.7 added a config option for the max distance of the ender soul hand's teleport ability. Setting it also allows the ability to be disabled entirely.[12]
- Version 8.0.7 fixed a crash when the mutant skeleton fires arrows with the Bewitchment mod installed.[12]
- Version 8.0.7 fixed chemical x not being usable on Fabric.[12]
8.0.5 and 8.0.6 (November to December 2023)
Version 8.0.5 gave mutants a custom mob category for spawning, so only a single mutant can exist at a time. It also capped the number of entities spawned when you defeat a mutant (mainly skeleton parts and creeper eggs) to avoid problems with automatic mob farms, and reworked mutant skeleton arrow physics. Version 8.0.6 then reverted the spawn category changes, worded in the changelog as "for now", so the one-mutant limit from 8.0.5 was not kept in that release. That "for now" wording applies only to this revert; the other entries in this section are plain changes as the changelog lists them.[12]
Version 8.0.5 also fixed a mutant enderman rendering crash, a rare crash while the mutant zombie attacks, and thrown blocks replacing non-full blocks like stairs and slabs when they land.[12]
8.0.3 and 8.0.4 (August and September 2023)
- In 8.0.3 the mutant enderman started using a separate loot table, mutantmonsters:entities/mutant_enderman_continuous, for the continuous ender pearl drops while it is dying.[12]
- In 8.0.3, items dropped once at the end of the death sequence use mutantmonsters:entities/mutant_enderman, which is empty by default but can be used for custom death drops from a data pack.[12]
- Version 8.0.3 greatly reduced mutant spawn rates in soul sand valley and warped forest biomes. Mutants are still more common there than elsewhere, just a lot less so.[12]
- Version 8.0.3 fixed the mutant zombie model hovering slightly above the ground, and 8.0.4 fixed a client crash when the mutant enderman tries to drop loot.[12]
8.0.1 and 8.0.2 (July 2023)
- Version 8.0.1 added new textures in Minecraft's new art style, provided by tdstress, and adjusted the creeper minion interaction screen.[12]
- Version 8.0.2 made mutant monsters destroy leaves in their path when chasing a target, similar to ravagers.[12]
- Version 8.0.2 fixed the Hulk Smash! advancement being granted whenever a mutant zombie is killed, and fixed mutant snow golems overriding waterlogged blocks with ice.[12]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any pack-specific changes to Mutant Monsters across Project Infinity releases are unverified. The mod's own changelog was also cut off, so entries older than 8.0.1 are not covered here.
