Mob Grinding Utils is a mod in Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.51.4-hotfix-2, where it is version 1.20.1-1.1.0. A Mod that adds fun ways to make mob farms (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Mob Grinding Utils?

1 part

Mob Grinding Utils is a mob farming toolkit, and this pack ships version 1.20.1-1.1.0 of it. It has been in the pack since 0.0.45.4 or earlier. The quest book shows the shape of the mod: mob handling gear like the Mob Fan, Mob Masher and Entity Spawner, an XP line built around the Singularity Tank, and a chicken feed line.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod has its own chapter, "Mob Grinding Utilities", in the "Resource Generation" group. It is chapter 10 of 44 in the book and holds 75 quests, starting with a checkmark quest of the same name.[2]

Inside the chapter the quests branch into several chains:[2]

The chapter also holds a few quests from other mods. There are Vector Plate quests in a chain of three, and a long run of Cataclysm boss and gear quests. Some quests ask for 20 Tinted Glass, and several others are structure or kill tasks.[2]

How do you get started with Mob Grinding Utils?

5 parts

In the quest book, Mob Grinding Utils is the chapter "Mob Grinding Utilities" quest, in the Resource Generation group (chapter 10 of 44). Several quests there have no prerequisite: a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" and a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities". Here is a sensible order to work through them.[2]

Step one: Iron Spikes

Start with Iron Spikes. They are basic spikes that also drop the mob's XP. Mobs killed by spikes do not count as player kills.[3]

Step two: the Mob Masher

The Mob Masher is the advanced modular mob grinder, and its recipe uses the spikes. Unlike spikes, mobs it mashes do count as player kills. In the quest book the upgrades come after it, such as Mob Masher Upgrade Looting, Mob Masher Upgrade Sharpness and Mob Masher Upgrade Fire.[2][3][4]

Step three: Tank and Tinted Glass

Make a Singularity Tank early. It is part of the recipes for the XP Solidifier, XP Drain Singularity Tank and Jumbo Tank. In the quest book, the XP Drain Singularity Tank leads on to the XP Tap, the Fluid XP Bucket and the Jumbo Tank.[2][4]

Next is Tinted Glass, which lets you see inside a mob farm without letting light in. One craft makes 4, and the quest asks for 20.[2][3][4]

Step four: collecting the loot

The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. It can push out on any side, fluids go into tanks and items into inventories, and Absorption Radius Upgrade increases its range.[3]

Step five: XP into a spawner

The quest chain from XP Mould Jelly Baby leads to XP Jelly Baby and then the Entity Spawner. The spawner works in a 3x3x1 area, uses a mob egg in its top slot and is fuelled by XP Jelly Babies. Its recipe also needs a Solid XP.[2][3][4]

How does Mob Grinding Utils work?

6 parts

Mob Grinding Utils is a set of blocks that kill mobs, move them around, spawn more of them and turn the XP into something useful. Everything here comes from the mod's own tooltips and this pack's recipe and script data.[3][4]

Killing mobs

The Mob Masher is the mod's advanced modular grinder. It can be enhanced with Mob Masher upgrades, which add levels of Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Fire Aspect, Looting and Beheading, +1 per upgrade. Mobs it kills DO count as player kills.[3]

The pack adds one extra recipe: the Mob Masher and Fake Mob Masher can be swapped into each other with a shapeless craft.[4][5]

Iron Spikes are the basic option. They also drop the mob's XP, but mobs killed by spikes do NOT count as player kills.[3]

Moving and collecting

The Entity Conveyor moves mobs and items along a horizontal vector, and mobs can spawn on it. The Mob Fan pushes mobs in the direction it faces, and its area of effect can be toggled in its GUI.[3]

The fan takes upgrades, each adding +1 up to a cap:[3]

The Absorption Hopper vacuums up items and XP orbs in a 7x7x7 area. You can configure it to push out on any side: fluids go into tanks and items go into inventories. Each Absorption Radius Upgrade adds +1 to the radius, up to a max of 6. In its GUI you can toggle the area of effect and offset its position on the N/S, W/E and D/U axes.[3]

Spawning mobs

The Entity Spawner spawns mobs in a 3x3x1 area. It uses a mob egg in the top slot and is fuelled by XP Jelly Baby. You can enhance it with XP Speed Upgrades and Spawner Height/Width Upgrades. Like the hopper, its area of effect can be toggled and its position offset in the GUI.[3]

Delightful Dirt spawns more creature mobs. It stops working when the light level is below 10, and it does not work in ocean biomes. At night it snow-caps if exposed to the sky. Dreadful Dirt spawns more hostile mobs, stops at a light level of 5 and above, and ignites in daylight if exposed to the sky.[3]

The Golden Egg makes a 5x5 area of Delightful Dirt and the Rotten Egg makes a 5x5 area of Dreadful Dirt. Both are used on grass, dirt, mycelium or farmland. The GM chicken feeds are single use for the chicken, and their tooltips mention creating a Rotten Egg or a Golden Egg.[3]

The pack fills the mod's no_dreadful_spawn entity tag with a list of modded mobs and bosses, including Mutant Monsters mutants and the Bosses of Mass Destruction bosses. The no_spawn tag is left empty.[6][7]

Handling XP

Singularity Tank and Jumbo Tank store fluids. The Jumbo Tank is a larger Singularity Tank and holds 1024 buckets of any liquid. The XP Tap attaches to the side of a tank and turns Fluid XP back into orbs.[3]

The XP Solidifier turns Fluid XP into edible XP jellies using moulds. It needs an XP mould and Fluid XP in its tank, can be set to export horizontally, and works faster with XP Speed Upgrades.[3]

Utility blocks

  • Ender Inhibitor: inhibits teleportation for entities up to 8 blocks away. It attaches to any side of solid blocks, and right click toggles it.[3]
  • Ender Dragon Death Muffler: stops Ender Dragon death sounds within a 32 block radius. Right click to hide the boss bar.[3]
  • Wither Boss Death Muffler: stops Wither death sounds within an 8 block radius. Right click to hide the boss bar.[3]
  • Tinted Glass: lets you see inside the mob farm without letting light in, and it is tough enough to withstand Withers.[3]

The pack's Water Condenser structures (tiers 1 to 3) use Singularity Tank as a structure block. The tiers differ only in the central block: empowered diamatine crystal block, supremium gemstone block or better gold block.[8]

The XP Solidifier and the XP Tap are both ingredients in the pack's two Creative Fluid Tank recipes.[9]

How do you progress through Mob Grinding Utils?

3 parts

Mob Grinding Utils has no formal tier system in this pack. What you get instead is the quest book's own ordering: the chapter "Mob Grinding Utilities" sits in the Resource Generation group (chapter 10 of 44) and holds 75 quests. It opens with a checkmark quest, "Mob Grinding Utilities" quest, and then splits into several branches. Most of the Mob Grinding Utils items are quest tasks.[2]

The branches, in quest-book order

The same chapter also holds a Vector Plate line (Vector Plate, Fast, Extreme) and a block of Cataclysm quests (boss kills, ingots, weapons). Those are not Mob Grinding Utils items, so they are not covered here.[2]

The pack also adds its own shapeless recipes through a script: a kubejs:fake_mob_masher item can be turned into a Mob Masher, and a Mob Masher can be turned back into it.[4][5]

Unverified What the fake Mob Masher item is used for is not shown in the sources.

The tank line is the backbone of the liquid XP branch. The Singularity Tank is the entry point.[4]

What this pack changes

The pack adds a Thermal crucible recipe that turns Solidified Experience from Actually Additions into 50 units of Fluid Xp. It gives you another way to get liquid XP for the tank and bucket quests.[4][10]

The Singularity Tank is also used by the pack's Water Condenser multiblock in Masterful Machinery. The three Water Condenser tiers all place Singularity Tank in their layout and differ in one other block of the structure.[8]

For Dreadful Dirt, the pack ships an entity type tag named no_dreadful_spawn. It lists mobs from other mods such as Born in Chaos, Mutant Monsters and Bosses of Mass Destruction. The pack's no_spawn tag is empty.[6][7]

Unverified Exactly how the no_dreadful_spawn tag affects gameplay is not described in the sources.

How does Mob Grinding Utils work with other mods?

6 parts

Mob Grinding Utils connects to other mods in this pack through a few recipes, a multiblock layout and some quests that sit in its chapter. Here is everything the sources confirm.[2][4][8]

Creative Fluid Tank

The pack adds two Extended Crafting shaped table recipes for the Creative Fluid Tank. Both ask for the XP Tap and the XP Solidifier, alongside fluid machines and parts from many other mods. These recipes are added by the pack, not taken from a mod default.[4]

First pack-added recipe for the Creative Fluid Tank.

Second pack-added recipe for the Creative Fluid Tank.

Solidified Experience to Fluid XP

The pack adds a Thermal crucible recipe that melts Solidified Experience from Actually Additions into 50 units of Fluid Xp. So XP solidified by another mod can go back into the liquid form that Mob Grinding Utils uses.[4]

50× Fluid XpAdded by the pack

Crucible (thermal)

Recipe id: thermal:solidified_experience_to_xp

Pack-added crucible recipe that turns Solidified Experience into Fluid XP.

Water Condenser multiblock

The pack defines three Masterful Machinery structures called Water Condenser Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3. All three use the Singularity Tank (the Singularity Tank) in the layout, together with an energy input port and fluid output ports. The tiers differ in one block: Tier 1 uses an empowered diamatine crystal block from Actually Additions, Tier 2 uses a supremium gemstone block from Mystical Agriculture, and Tier 3 uses a better gold block from Evolved Mekanism.[8]

Mob Masher swap recipe

A pack script adds two shapeless crafting recipes that convert the Mob Masher (the Mob Masher) into Fake Mob Masher and back again.[4][5]

In the quest book

The Mob Grinding Utilities chapter sits in the Resource Generation group, as chapter 10 of 44. It has 75 quests, and 3 of them are not covered here, so check the quest book for those. Besides the mod's own items, the chapter includes quests for items from other mods.[2]

Spawn tags

The pack ships its own version of the mod's no_dreadful_spawn entity tag. It lists mobs and bosses from Born in Chaos, Mutant Monsters and Bosses of Mass Destruction, such as the mutant zombie, the mutant creeper, the lich and the void blossom. The pack's no_spawn tag is empty.[6][7]

Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Mob Grinding Utils?

5 parts

The pack's quest book covers this mod in one chapter: "Mob Grinding Utilities" quest. The book puts it in the "Resource Generation" group, as chapter 10 of 44, and it holds 75 quests. It opens with a checkmark quest, and the rest of the chapter asks you to obtain items, most of them from this mod.[2]

Starting points

Several quests in the chapter list no prerequisite, so the book lets you take them in any order. The quests ask you to obtain the Mob Masher (a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities"), the Mob Fan (a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities"), the Absorption Hopper (a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities") and the Singularity Tank (a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities"). The other prerequisite-free item quests ask for Iron Spikes, the Entity Conveyor, the Ender Inhibitor Active, the Ender Dragon Death Muffler and the Wither Boss Death Muffler.[2]

a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" also lists no prerequisite. It asks you to obtain 20 Tinted Glass.[2]

Upgrade branches

XP and the Entity Spawner

The spawner line in the book runs from a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" to a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" and then to a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities". Three quests come after the spawner quest: a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" and a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities".[2]

The tank line runs from a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" to a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities". Three quests list that one as their prerequisite: a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" and a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities".[2]

Chicken feed and dirt

This part of the chapter follows a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities". Three quests come after it: a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities" and a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities". Each starts a short chain:[2]

  1. a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities".[2]
  2. a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities".[2]
  3. a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities".[2]

Other quests in the chapter

The chapter also holds a Vector Plate line: a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities", then a quest in "Mob Grinding Utilities". These quests ask for Dark Utils items, not items from this mod.[2]

The rest of the chapter has structure and kill tasks, plus a long run of quests asking for Cataclysm items. Examples are "Kill the harbinger" quest, "Obtain Witherite" quest (which asks for 9 Witherite Ingots) and "Craft the Mechanical Fusion Anvil" quest. These quests do not ask for items from this mod.[2]
