What is Born in Chaos?
2 parts
Born in Chaos is all about making survival scarier. It adds a lot of aggressive mobs, each with its own quirks, plus a new boss, weapons and armor, decorative blocks, new structures and achievements. The idea is that you feel nervous again about going out at night or exploring dark caves.[1]
This pack includes Born in Chaos 1.7.5 for Forge 1.20.1. The mod needs GeckoLib to work, and it is compatible with the Better Combat mod if you want more dynamic fights with its weapons.[1][2]
The mobs
The mobs are sorted into undead, spirits, arthropods and monsters with no special type. Each one spawns in specific biome types, so they also work with any mod that adds new biomes. Some examples are the Decrepit Skeleton, a weak melee-only skeleton, and the Skeleton Demoman, which starts detonating when its health gets low. You get a window to kill it or run.[1]
If you want to turn mobs and structures off, the mod uses game rules, set before world creation or with the /gamerule command in game.[1]
Where the quest book puts it
The mod appears in the pack's quest book in the "Extended Crafting" chapter, which is in the "Production" group and is chapter 37 of 44. Its quest is a quest in "Extended Crafting", and it asks you to bring the Dark Metal Ingot. It sits among a long run of other ingot quests, from steel and alloys to modded metals.[3]
The chapter has 248 quests in total, and the text of 113 of them isn't included here, so check the quest book itself for those. The sources I have don't place Born in Chaos on the ATM Star path.[3]
How do you get started with Born in Chaos?
4 parts
Born in Chaos adds aggressive mobs, new structures, equipment, decorative blocks and achievements, so your first goal is to get gear that lets you fight back. The mod's own advancements point at dark metal first, and that is where this section starts.[1][4]
Step 1: Dark metal
One advancement asks you to get a piece of dark metal, and the next asks you to craft a Dark Metal Ingot. Everything below builds on that ingot.[4]
- Get a Piece of Dark Metal and blast it into a Dark Metal Nugget.[5]
- Turn nuggets into a Dark Metal Ingot with the shaped recipe shown below.[5]
- A Pile of Dark Metal also becomes an ingot in a blast furnace. The pack adds a plain smelting recipe for it too.[5]

The pack also adds its own crafting recipe that turns a Mystical Agriculture essence into 4 Dark Metal Ingots.[5]

Step 2: Dark metal armor
Once you have ingots, make a Dark Metal Armor Plate. The helmet, chestplate and leggings are each a smithing recipe built on that plate, using a Smithing Template and the matching netherite armor piece. The mod also has an advancement for equipping a full set of Dark Metal Armor.[4][5]

Step 3: Black argillite for building
The mod's decorative stone is Black Argillite. You craft it, then smelt it into Fired Black Argillite. The pack adds an EnderIO alloy smelter recipe for that step as well. Fired argillite makes Black Argillite Brick and the Argillite Lamp, and the stonecutter makes walls and columns from it.[5]

In the quest book
The quest book has a Dark Metal Ingot quest, a quest in "Extended Crafting", in the Extended Crafting chapter (group Production, chapter 37 of 44). It is one of the many ingot quests listed before "The one and only" quest in that chapter.[3]
How does Born in Chaos work?
4 parts
Here's the honest picture, since you might be hoping for machines and multiblocks: Born in Chaos doesn't work like a tech mod. The sources describe it as a mod that adds aggressive mobs with their own properties, a new boss, weapons and armor, decorative blocks, new structures and achievements. Nothing in them describes machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation for this mod, so I'm not going to invent any.[1]
The mod's mechanics live in its mobs and combat. If you want to turn mobs and structures off, the mod page says to use game rules, either before creating the world or with the /gamerule command in game.[1]
Crafting and processing chains
What the mod does have is a handful of vanilla-style processing steps: crafting, smelting, blasting, smoking, stonecutting and smithing. Here are the ones the recipe dump confirms for this pack.[5]
Dark Metal
In this pack, Dark Metal Ingot has a recipe the pack added itself: one Mystical Agriculture dark metal essence crafts into 4 ingots. That's a pack addition, not something the mod does by default.[5]

The mod's own route to Dark Metal Nugget is blasting a Piece of Dark Metal.[5]
Dark Metal gear goes through a smithing step. You craft a Dark Metal Armor Plate first, then combine it with a Smithing Template and a netherite helmet at a smithing table to get the Dark Metal Helmet.[5]

Black Argillite
Black Argillite is crafted in batches of 4, and from there most of the family is made by stonecutting. The recipe dump counts 16 stonecutting recipes in this mod, covering 11 different results, and one example is the Black Argillite Brick Wall.[5]
Stonecutting
Recipe id: born_in_chaos_v1:black_argillite_brick_wall_k_2
Smelting a Black Argillite Brick gives a Cracked Black Argillite Brick. The pack also adds an Ender IO alloy smelter version of the same conversion, so you can do it in either place.[5]

Traps and food
The Hound Trap recipe is marked in the dump as changed by the pack. The dump doesn't say what the mod's original recipe was, so I can't tell you what's different, but the recipe below is the one that applies here.[5]

A Corpse Maggot can be cooked into a Fried Maggot in a smoker or over a campfire.[5]
Unverified Machine, power, fluid and automation mechanics for Born in Chaos are not shown in the sources here. The mod's in-jar guidebook and config files were not available, so anything beyond the recipes and pack changes above is unconfirmed.
How do you progress through Born in Chaos?
4 parts
Born in Chaos doesn't have a big tier ladder in this pack. The clearest progression is the Dark Metal chain: raw scraps, ingots, armor plates, then a full Dark Metal armor set. After that come a few crossover uses in the pack's endgame crafting and one rare candy recipe.[5]
Where it sits in the quest book
The mod has no chapter of its own. Its one quest, a quest in "Extended Crafting", asks you to hand in a Dark Metal Ingot. It lives in the Extended Crafting chapter (group Production, chapter 37 of 44 in the book), which has 248 quests.[3]
The book lists no prerequisite for the Dark Metal Ingot quest. It is one of the ingot quests listed before "The one and only" quest, whose task is The Ultimate Ingot.[3]
Tier 1: Dark Metal
Dark Metal comes in several forms: Piece of Dark Metal and Pile of Dark Metal are the raw stages, and Dark Metal Nugget is the small form. You blast a Piece of Dark Metal into a nugget, and nuggets and ingots convert both ways.[5]

An ingot splits into 9 nuggets.
A Pile of Dark Metal becomes an ingot through blasting. The pack also adds a plain smelting recipe for the same thing.[5]

For storage, a Dark Metal Block breaks back down into 9 ingots.[5]
Tier 2: Dark Metal armor
Next you turn ingots into a Dark Metal Armor Plate. Each armor piece is then a smithing upgrade of the matching netherite piece, using that plate and the Smithing Template smithing template.[5]

The pack's own smithing recipe for the Allthemodium Mesh also uses the same smithing template, so hang on to spare templates if you plan to push into the Allthemodium tiers.[6]
Pack changes and endgame crossovers
The pack changed two of the mod's recipes. The first is the Hound Trap. The second is the Transmuting Elixir, which in turn feeds the Eternal Candy recipe.[5]

How does Born in Chaos work with other mods?
6 parts
Born in Chaos connects to the rest of the pack mostly through endgame crafting. Its items show up as ingredients in Extended Crafting table recipes for Avaritia gear and food, Mystical Agriculture seeds and a Draconic Additions item, plus one simple crafting recipe for a Gateways item.[5]
Gate Pearl
The pack adds a shaped crafting recipe that turns the Transmuting Elixir into a Gate Pearl. It is a normal crafting recipe, not a table recipe.[5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: gateways:gate_pearl/born_in_chaos_gate
Added by the pack, so you won't find this recipe in the base mods.
Avaritia Infinity gear
The pack changes the Avaritia Infinity gear recipes, and they are Extended Crafting shaped table recipes. Several Born in Chaos pieces are among the ingredients: the Great Reaper Axe goes into Nature's Ruin, and the Sharpened Dark Metal Sword goes into Sword of the Cosmos.[5]
The armor works the same way. Infinity Helmet takes the Dark Metal Helmet, the Missionary Hat and the Nightmare Mask. Infinity Pants takes the Nightmare Pants. Infinity Boots takes the Dark Metal Boots and the Nightmare Boots.[5]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)
Recipe id: avaritia:infinity_sword
The pack's changed Sword of the Cosmos recipe, which includes a Born in Chaos weapon.
Food for Avaritia
The pack also changes the Avaritia food recipes, and both are shapeless table recipes. Cosmic Meatballs accept Born in Chaos foods such as the Fried Maggot and the Smoked Monster Flesh. Ultimate Stew accepts the Holiday Candy.[5]

Pack-added endgame recipes
The Ethereal Spirit is used in several recipes the pack adds itself. It goes into the Chaos Heart and into the Infinity 12. Both are Extended Crafting shaped table recipes.[5]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)
Recipe id: draconicadditions:chaos_heart
Added by the pack as an Extended Crafting table recipe.
Mystical Agriculture seeds lean on this mod heavily. The recipe for Dark Metal Ingot Seeds uses a large set of Born in Chaos items, including the Dark Metal Block, the Fel Soil and the Seed of Chaos. The Lifestealer Skull also appears in the recipe for Neutronium Seeds.[5]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)
Recipe id: mysticalagriculture:dark_metal_ingot_seeds
Added by the pack as an Extended Crafting table recipe.
Smithing and Allthemodium
The pack's Allthemodium script has a smithing recipe that uses the Smithing Template template. With an Netherite Mesh and an Allthemodium Nugget, it produces the Allthemodium Mesh.[6]
Quest book
In the quest book, the "Extended Crafting" chapter (group "Production", chapter 37 of 44) has a quest asking for the Dark Metal Ingot, listed as a quest in "Extended Crafting". Most of that chapter's quest text isn't covered here, so check the quest book for what the rest says.[3]
Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Born in Chaos?
2 parts
Born in Chaos only shows up in one place in the quest book: the "Extended Crafting" chapter, in the "Production" group. Only one quest in that chapter asks for an item from this mod.[3]
The Dark Metal Ingot quest
The quest is a quest in "Extended Crafting". Its task is to hand in a single Dark Metal Ingot. It has no prerequisite in the book, so it isn't locked behind the chapter's opening checkmark quest "Welcome to Extended Crafting" quest. You can pick it up whenever you have the ingot.[3]
Where it leads
The Dark Metal Ingot quest is one of the many ingot quests that "The one and only" quest comes after. That quest asks for The Ultimate Ingot, and every ingot and alloy quest in its list needs to be done first. Dark Metal is one entry among them, so this mod's quest is a small stepping stone towards that goal.[3]
Once you finish the ultimate ingot quest, it opens a quest in "Extended Crafting". That one also needs a quest in "Extended Crafting" and a quest in "Extended Crafting". After it comes a quest in "Extended Crafting".[3]
What changed in Born in Chaos between versions?
1 part
This pack version ships Born in Chaos 1.7.5. The mod was already in Project Infinity 0.1 by 0.0.45.4 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a while.[2]
1.7.5: Chaotic Spring event
The one change I can confirm from the mod's own changelog is the start of the Chaotic Spring event, added to give some variety while players wait for bigger updates.[9]
- The event lasts until April 22.[9]
- You can switch it off with the Seasonal Events game rule.[9]
- You can turn it on at any time, whatever the date or season, with the chaoticSpringEvent game rule.[9]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any changes the pack itself made to Born in Chaos across releases are unverified.
