What is Immersive Engineering?
1 part
Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic machines. Instead of glowing pipes, you string actual hanging power cables between connectors. Instead of a single block that spits out dust, you build big multiblock machines with moving parts.[1]
Good examples are the crusher, a 5x3x3 multiblock with rotating wheels, and the Excavator, a 3x7x8 multiblock that digs ores out of the ground with a big bucketwheel. Power comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. It uses the Forge Energy API, so it plays well with other tech mods, but it can also run fully standalone.[1]
This pack ships Immersive Engineering 1.18.2-8.3.1-157. The sources I have don't show any pack-specific changes to its recipes or configs, so treat the mod's own behaviour as the baseline here.[2]
Where it shows up in the quests
The pack's quest book asks for Immersive Engineering items in two chapters. One of them has the quest "{gravitas.quest.blacksteel.engineers_tools}" quest, whose tasks are the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver.[3][4]
Right after that tools quest, the same chapter asks you to hand in 27 Coke Brick in a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.6.title}". The quest a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.6.title}" then asks for a Blast Brick.[4]
The other chapter asks for 8 Treated Wood Planks in a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}", an Engineer's Workbench in a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}", and an Engineer's Crafting Table in a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}". It also has "{gravitas.quest.moon.blueprints}" quest, which has three tasks that each call for an Engineer's Blueprint.[3]
Unverified Whether the mod sits on the ATM Star path could not be confirmed from the sources, so check the quest book in-game before you plan around it.
How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?
5 parts
Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around hanging power lines and big multiblock machines. Before you build anything, grab the Engineer's Manual, the mod's own in-game documentation. It's crafted with a book and a lever, and the mod has an advancement for acquiring it.[1][5]
Treated Wood
Your first material is Treated Wood Planks. The pack has a quest asking for 8 of them, and the mod has an advancement for crafting some. You need it early because the crafting table and workbench recipes below both call for treated wood slabs.[3][5][6]

Crafting Table and Workbench
Next, make the Engineer's Crafting Table, then the Engineer's Workbench. Make them in that order, because the workbench recipe uses the crafting table. The pack changed the workbench recipe from the mod's default, so follow the recipe below rather than what you remember from other packs. The mod describes the workbench as the place where you modify your tools.[5][6]

Each of these has its own quest, so you get quest credit as you go.[3]
The Engineer's tools
One quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver together: "{gravitas.quest.blacksteel.engineers_tools}" quest. The pack changed the hammer and wire cutter recipes from the mod's defaults. The screwdriver recipe is the mod's own.[4][6]

Coke Bricks and Blast Bricks
After the tools quest, the quest book sends you after Coke Brick. The quest a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.6.title}" asks for 27 of them, so start collecting early. A follow-up quest, a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.6.title}", asks for a Blast Brick. Both recipes are the mod's own.[4][6]

Blueprints
The quest "{gravitas.quest.moon.blueprints}" quest asks for three Engineer's Blueprint items. This pack has more than one blueprint recipe. It changed the components blueprint and added the electrode blueprint, so check these two against what you know from other packs.[3][6]

How does Immersive Engineering work?
5 parts
Immersive Engineering is built around realism-inspired tech. Instead of glowing pipes, you get actual hanging power lines, and instead of one block that spits out dust, you get big multiblocks with moving parts. The mod uses the Forge Energy API but can be played fully standalone, and its in-game documentation is the Engineer's Manual.[1]
Power: cables, not block lanes
Power does not travel through lanes of adjacent blocks. It travels through cables spanned between connectors. For generation, the mod offers waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The pack also tracks a Kinetic Dynamo and a Diesel Generator multiblock as milestones.[1][5]
Energy is shown in Flux. Blocks can report how much energy they hold, the average transferred over a number of ticks in Flux per tick, and the average loss between wire points. Use those readouts to see where a line is wasting power.[5]
Not every wire coil carries power. The construction coils are decoration only and transmit no power, while the redstone coil carries redstone signals instead. In the pack's client config, copper, electrum, steel and redstone wires each have a colour setting, and so do insulated copper and electrum.[5][7]
Multiblocks
Many of the mod's machines are multiblocks. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 structure and the Excavator is a 3x7x8 structure with a bucketwheel. The pack tracks these multiblocks as milestones:[1][5]
- Arc Furnace, Coke Oven, Crude Blast Furnace and Improved Blast Furnace[5]
- Crusher, Metal Press, Squeezer and Mixer[5]
- Fermenter and Refinery[5]
- Diesel Generator and Excavator[5]
- Silo and Tank, for bulk storage[5]
Tuning machines in this pack
The Arc Furnace, Auto Workbench and Bottling Machine each have an energy modifier and a time modifier. Each is a multiplier on every recipe's energy cost or time. They are all set to 1 in the pack, so those machines run at their normal recipe values. The Assembler uses 80 Flux to craft an item from a recipe.[8]
Arc Furnace electrodes lose 1 damage per tick while the furnace is working. They are set to 96,000 maximum damage, which lasts 8 consecutive in-game days. Arc Furnace recycling is no longer a config option. It is controlled through a datapack recipe file instead.[8]
The common config sets which mod IE should prefer for processing results, such as the copper the Excavator digs up or crushing recipes with no IE item. In this pack that list is preferredOres, set to tfc first, then minecraft.[9]
Fluids and item storage
Barrels keep their fluid when broken, but they cannot store hot fluids or gases. Trying to put a hot fluid or a gas into a container that can't hold it gives you an error message. Storage crates keep their inventory when broken.[5]
The Bottling Machine can be switched between holding containers until they are full and allowing partial filling. Pumps can be toggled to replace fluid blocks with cobblestone. The game warns that this can cause lag with large amounts of fluid.[5]
Several blocks have redstone control that can be inverted or not, and some can emit a strong redstone signal. Which blocks offer each option is not covered in the sources I have.[5]
Moving items around
For automation, the mod's advancements point to Conveyor Belts, Dropping and Extracting Conveyor Belts, the Item Router, the Item Batcher and Sheetmetal Chutes. The sources give only their names, not how they behave.[5]
Unverified Exact throughput, multiblock layouts for individual machines (other than the Crusher and Excavator sizes), and per-machine energy use beyond the Assembler were not available in the sources, so they are not covered here. Check the Engineer's Manual in-game for those.
How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?
4 parts
Immersive Engineering in this pack starts with treated wood and the Engineer's workstations, then moves on to the Engineer's tools, then bricks for coke and the blast furnace. Past that, the recipes show steel and aluminium gear. Here is the path in order, with the spots where the pack changed things.[3][4][6]
Treated wood and your first machines
One quest chapter asks for 8 Treated Wood Planks (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}"). The mod's own recipe makes treated planks from planks and creosote. The pack also changes a Create filling recipe so that any plank type can become treated planks.[3][6]
Filling (create)

The same chapter has you craft the Engineer's Crafting Table (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}") and then the Engineer's Workbench (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}"). The pack changed the workbench recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from other packs.[3][6]

Engineer's tools
In another chapter, "{gravitas.quest.blacksteel.engineers_tools}" quest wants the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver. The pack changed the first two, and the screwdriver is the mod's own version. All three are shown below.[4][6]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 guide
Immersive Engineering is wired into a lot of the pack. Most of the connections are recipes that the pack changed or added, so what you see here can differ from the standalone mod. The links fall into a few groups: TFC metals and materials, Create processing, Thermal and other ore-processing mods, and Immersive Petroleum.[10]
TFC metals and materials
The biggest change is that Immersive Engineering's metal processing now hands you TFC ingots. The pack changed the Arc Furnace ore recipes so they output Copper Ingot, Gold Ingot, Wrought Iron Ingot, Nickel Ingot and Silver Ingot. Here is the nickel one:[10]
Arc Furnace (immersiveengineering)
Slag
- any nickel ore
Recipe id: immersiveengineering:arcfurnace/ore_nickel
The pack's Arc Furnace nickel recipe gives a TFC nickel ingot. Like the other pack-changed Arc Furnace ore recipes, it uses Slag.
- Steel: both the Blast Furnace and the Arc Furnace produce Steel Ingot in this pack. Immersive Petroleum adds a pack-changed Arc Furnace variant that uses petcoke dust.[10]
- Smelting: Immersive Engineering's nickel and silver ores, including the deepslate versions, smelt or blast into TFC Nickel Ingot and Silver Ingot.[10]
- Ex Machinis compacting recipes added by the pack turn TFC garnierite into Raw Nickel and TFC native silver into Raw Silver. This works for the poor, normal and rich grades.[10]
- Lapis: crushing lapis ore in the Immersive Engineering crusher gives Sulfur Dust and Cut Lapis Lazuli.[10]
Blast Furnace (immersiveengineering)
Slag
- any iron ingot
Recipe id: immersiveengineering:blastfurnace/steel
The Blast Furnace gives a TFC steel ingot in this pack.
The pack also added mineral mix recipes built around TFC rocks. The gneiss and granite mixes include Raw Lead and TFC native silver. The basalt mix includes lead, Raw Uranium and Rich Hematite. The claystone and shale mixes include raw uranium and Lignite. In the quest book, a quest in "?" asks for the Mineral Survey Tools, and a quest in "?" follows it and asks for the Core Sample Drill.[10][11]
Several crafted items now use TFC materials. This applies to Tough Fabric, Hempcrete, Hemp Rope Coil, Blade Quiver, Gunpowder Barrel, Balloon and Dropping Conveyor Belt. The pack changed all of these recipes. Here is Tough Fabric as an example:[10]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden rod | ||
Recipe id: immersiveengineering:crafting/hemp_fabric
Food crops connect too. The pack changed the squeezer recipes for TFC beet, melon, pumpkin and wheat seeds, and added ones for oat, rye, soybean, squash and sugarcane seeds, all involving Plant Oil. The fermenter has pack-changed recipes for Ethanol with TFC sugarcane and with honey, and the honey one involves a FirmaLife Empty Jar.[10]
Create
- Create's crushed ores smelt and blast into Immersive Engineering ingots. Crushed raw aluminum and uranium use mod recipes, while the lead one was changed by the pack. They give Aluminium Ingot, Uranium Ingot and Lead Ingot.[10]
- Washing crushed ores gives Immersive Engineering nuggets: aluminium and uranium (mod recipes), plus lead, nickel and silver (changed by the pack). Washing Crushed Raw Copper gives an Copper Nugget and a clay ball.[10]
- Crushing tuff or Veridium, including the recycling variants, drops an Copper Nugget among its outputs. The pack changed these recipes.[10]
The pack changed the Precision Mechanism sequenced assembly and added a Create compacting recipe for Brass Mechanisms. Both are shown below. The press molds quest, a quest in "?", asks you to get the Immersive Engineering molds, including the Metal Press Mold: Gear.[10][11]
Sequenced Assembly (create)

This pack-changed sequenced assembly involves the Immersive Engineering Gold Plate.
Compacting (create)
Metal Press Mold: Gear
- any brass ingots
Recipe id: createaddition:compacting/brass_mechanism
Thermal, Ex Nihilo, Bigger Reactors and Blood Magic
- Ex Nihilo Sequentia raw aluminum, lead and uranium smelt or blast into Immersive Engineering ingots. The pack changed all of these recipes.[10]
- Bigger Reactors Uranium Ore smelts into an Uranium Ingot, and the Thermal pulverizer turns it into Uranium Grit and gravel. The pack changed both recipes.[10]
- Thermal's centrifuge splits bronze dust into Copper Grit and Tin Dust. Thermal's press can also pack coal coke into a Block of Coal Coke block. Both are pack-changed.[10]
- The Duroplast Sheet is used in Thermal's Redstone Flux Cell, Fluid Cell and Expanded Tank Construction recipes, all changed by the pack.[10]
Sulfur Dust can come from several mods here. Thermal's Earth Charge and Blood Magic's Lava Sigil both have pack-changed recipes that make it. Immersive Petroleum's hydrotreater can produce it as well.[10]
Immersive Petroleum
Immersive Petroleum builds directly on Immersive Engineering, and its crafting recipes are unchanged mod recipes. The Automatic Lubricator, Flarestack, Portable Generator, Projector, Seismic Survey Tool, Motorboat and Expanded Fuel Tank all take Immersive Engineering parts in their crafting. Here is one example:[10]

Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Immersive Engineering?
2 parts
Immersive Engineering shows up in two quest chapters in this pack. Both just ask you to get your hands on items from the mod, so there's nothing exotic to figure out here.[3][4]
Chapter 7: workstations and blueprints
This chapter has four Immersive Engineering quests. The sources don't list any prerequisites between them, so I can't tell you a required order. The quests are:[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}" asks you to get an Engineer's Workbench.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}" asks you to get an Engineer's Crafting Table.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.7.title}" asks you to hand in 8 Treated Wood Planks.[3]
- "{gravitas.quest.moon.blueprints}" quest has tasks that list the Engineer's Blueprint more than once.[3]
Chapter 6: tools and the blast brick path
This chapter is a clear chain, so follow it in order. It starts with "{gravitas.quest.blacksteel.engineers_tools}" quest, which asks for three tools: the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver. That quest itself unlocks after another quest (42471A8474620E27) that the sources don't describe.[4]
Once the tools are done, a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.6.title}" opens up. It asks for 27 Coke Brick.[4]
The last step is a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.6.title}", which asks for a single Blast Brick. It needs the coke brick quest finished, and also another quest (4B88B6D1DD2A30EA) that the sources don't describe.[4]
Unverified The sources don't say what rewards these quests give, or how the two chapters connect to each other, so check in-game before planning around that.
Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?
5 parts
Immersive Engineering keeps its settings in client, common and server config files, and the server file is the one that matters most for gameplay. In this pack it sits in the defaultconfigs folder, so it is applied to new worlds. An existing world keeps its own copy under its saves folder in serverconfig, and edits to the pack file will not change that copy.[8][9]
Ore generation
This one catches a lot of people out. The pack sets the vein size to 0 for every IE ore: ores.bauxite.vein_size, ores.deep_nickel.vein_size, ores.lead.vein_size, ores.nickel.vein_size, ores.silver.vein_size and ores.uranium.vein_size. The option's own description says a vein size of 0 disables generation, so you should not expect to find IE's own ores in the ground of a world created with this file.[8]
preferredOres is set to tfc first, then minecraft. That list is in priority order and decides which mod's items IE processes should produce, including the ores the Excavator digs up and crushing recipes with no IE item attached.[9]
Excavator
- machines.excavator.yield is 38,400, the maximum yield you can pull from one chunk. A negative number would make it infinite.[8]
- machines.excavator.consumption is 4,096 Flux per tick while digging.[8]
- machines.excavator.chance is 0.9 (higher means fewer mineral veins) and machines.excavator.initial_depletion is 0.2.[8]
- machines.excavator.particles is true. Set it to false if the particle storm bothers you.[8]
Power and wires
- Capacitors: LV stores 100,000 Flux at 256 per tick in and out, MV stores 1,000,000 at 1,024, and HV stores 4,000,000 at 4,096.[8]
- wires.copper.transferRate is 2,048 IF/t.[8]
- wires.copper.loss is 0.05, the fraction of power lost over each stretch of distance in copper wire.[8]
- wires.copper.maxLength is 16 blocks.[8]
- wires.electrum.transferRate is 8,192 IF/t.[8]
- wires.electrum.loss is 0.025, so electrum wastes less power than copper.[8]
- wires.electrum.maxLength is 16 blocks.[8]
- wires.hv.transferRate is 32,768 IF/t.[8]
- wires.hv.loss is 0.025.[8]
- wires.hv.maxLength is 32 blocks.[8]
- wires.enableWireDamage and wires.blocksBreakWires are both true. Live wires hurt entities that touch them, and placing a block in a wire breaks it and drops the coil.[8]
- machines.lightning_output is 16,000,000 Flux per lightning strike, and machines.dieselGen_output is 4,096 Flux per tick.[8]
Machine speed and upkeep
Every machine's energy and time modifier is left at 1, so recipes run at their normal cost and speed. That covers the arc furnace, crusher, metal press, mixer, squeezer, fermenter, sawmill, bottling machine, auto workbench and refinery energy modifier. The garden cloche growth modifier is also 1.[8]
- machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage is 96,000. Electrodes take 1 damage per tick while the furnace works, and the file notes this lasts 8 consecutive in-game days. That matches the default value the file mentions.[8]
- tools.hammer_durability is 100 and tools.cutter_durability is 250.[8]
- machines.pump.infiniteWater is true, so the Fluid Pump can draw infinite water from sources. machines.pump.placeCobble is also true, so it replaces fluids it picks up with cobblestone.[8]
- machines.floodlight.spawnPrevent and machines.lantern.spawnPrevent are true, so floodlights and powered lanterns stop mob spawning.[8]
Client options
- disableFancyTESR is true. It simplifies lighting on dynamically rendered models, which the config says affects turrets and garden cloches and may improve FPS.[7]
- enableVBO is false. The config warns that turning it on is faster but may clash with visual effects from other mods.[7]
- manualGuiScale is 4 and increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5, which makes windmills visible from further away.[7]
What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?
2 parts
All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b ships Immersive Engineering 1.18.2-8.3.1-157. The mod has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier.[2]
Changes up to 8.3.0, which your version includes
The newest mod changelog I have for a release at or below your version is 8.3.0-155. It was a big polish release, with new sounds and particles, a few balance tweaks and a long list of fixes.[2][12]
- The Cloche's GUI gained a process indicator, and its CraftTweaker integration was fixed.[12]
- New sounds for the Assembler, Bottling Machine, Coke Oven, Fermenter, Mixer, Preheaters, Refinery and Sawmill.[12]
- More items can now be recycled by the Arc Furnace.[12]
- Particles were overhauled. The Crusher, Sample Drill and Excavator got new or expanded particles, the Mixer and Diesel Generator got more, and the Arc and Blast Furnaces got smoke. The Sawmill blade also stops when the machine is off.[12]
- The Crusher model now has interlocking wheels, and the Arc Furnace texture was updated.[12]
- The Silo and Tank bounding boxes are now stepped at the top.[12]
- The spawn chances for Lead, Silver and Deepslate Nickel Ores were increased.[12]
- The manual now opens on a lectern and shows very large multiblocks better. The Tesla coil entry also mentions the screwdriver.[12]
The same release fixed several bugs you might have run into: a Diesel Generator that ran infinitely on too little fuel, data loss in toolboxes, incorrect item router behavior, rounding errors in comparator output, and revolvers not getting perks from all their components.[12]
Unverified What changed in the 8.3.1-157 build itself is unverified, because its changelog was not available.
Newer changes that are not in this pack
Release 8.4.0-161 is newer than the 8.3.1-157 build in this pack, so its changes are not part of Gravitas 3.6b. The headline items were an overhaul of the Accumulator Backpack and a Rock Softening Acid upgrade for the Mining Drill that gives it Fortune 3.[2][13]
