What is Immersive Engineering?
1 part
Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired machines with a retro-futurism look, think BioShock or SkyCaptain rather than clinical white and grey cubes. This pack includes version 1.18.2-8.3.1-157. If you like tech that looks and feels like actual industry, this is the mod for you.[1][2]
Instead of glowing tubes, you get real hanging powerlines. Power moves through cables spanned between connectors, not lanes of blocks. It uses the Forge Energy API, but it can be played fully standalone. Generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more.[1]
A lot of the machines are multiblocks. The crusher is a 5x3x3 structure with rotating wheels, and the excavator is a huge, resource-intensive 3x7x8 build that digs ores out of the ground with a bucketwheel. For documentation, the mod ships its own in-game Engineer's Manual.[1]
Where it fits in this pack
Immersive Engineering shows up right at the start of the quest book. The first chapter walks you through the mod's basic tooling and the steps toward its blast furnace.[3]
- Early quests ask you to get Treated Wood Planks (8 of them), then an Engineer's Crafting Table and an Engineer's Workbench. See a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}", a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" and a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}".[3]
- "{gravitas.quest.caveman.blueprints}" quest asks you to hand in Engineer's Blueprint items.[3]
- "{gravitas.quest.caveman.engineers_tools}" quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver.[3]
- After the tools quest, a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for 27 Coke Brick.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" then asks for a Blast Brick. It unlocks after the coke brick quest and one other quest.[3]
How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around hanging power lines and big multiblock machines. Before you build anything, grab the Engineer's Manual, the mod's own in-game documentation. It's crafted with a book and a lever, and the mod has an advancement for acquiring it.[1][4]
Treated Wood
Your first material is Treated Wood Planks. The pack has a quest asking for 8 of them, and the mod has an advancement for crafting some. You need it early because the crafting table and workbench recipes below both call for treated wood slabs.[4][5][6]

Crafting Table and Workbench
Next, make the Engineer's Crafting Table, then the Engineer's Workbench. Make them in that order, because the workbench recipe uses the crafting table. The pack changed the workbench recipe from the mod's default, so follow the recipe below rather than what you remember from other packs. The mod describes the workbench as the place where you modify your tools.[4][6]

Each of these has its own quest, so you get quest credit as you go.[5]
The Engineer's tools
One quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver together: "{gravitas.quest.caveman.engineers_tools}" quest. The pack changed the hammer and wire cutter recipes from the mod's defaults. The screwdriver recipe is the mod's own.[6][7]

Coke Bricks and Blast Bricks
After the tools quest, the quest book sends you after Coke Brick. The quest a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for 27 of them, so start collecting early. A follow-up quest, a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}", asks for a Blast Brick. Both recipes are the mod's own.[6][7]

How does Immersive Engineering work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering is built around realism-inspired tech. Instead of glowing pipes, you get actual hanging power lines, and instead of one block that spits out dust, you get big multiblocks with moving parts. The mod uses the Forge Energy API but can be played fully standalone, and its in-game documentation is the Engineer's Manual.[1]
Power: cables, not block lanes
Power does not travel through lanes of adjacent blocks. It travels through cables spanned between connectors. For generation, the mod offers waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The pack also tracks a Kinetic Dynamo and a Diesel Generator multiblock as milestones.[1][4]
Energy is shown in Flux. Blocks can report how much energy they hold, the average transferred over a number of ticks in Flux per tick, and the average loss between wire points. Use those readouts to see where a line is wasting power.[4]
Not every wire coil carries power. The construction coils are decoration only and transmit no power, while the redstone coil carries redstone signals instead. In the pack's client config, copper, electrum, steel and redstone wires each have a colour setting, and so do insulated copper and electrum.[4][8]
Multiblocks
Many of the mod's machines are multiblocks. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 structure and the Excavator is a 3x7x8 structure with a bucketwheel. The pack tracks these multiblocks as milestones:[1][4]
- Arc Furnace, Coke Oven, Crude Blast Furnace and Improved Blast Furnace[4]
- Crusher, Metal Press, Squeezer and Mixer[4]
- Fermenter and Refinery[4]
- Diesel Generator and Excavator[4]
- Silo and Tank, for bulk storage[4]
Tuning machines in this pack
The Arc Furnace, Auto Workbench and Bottling Machine each have an energy modifier and a time modifier. Each is a multiplier on every recipe's energy cost or time. They are all set to 1 in the pack, so those machines run at their normal recipe values. The Assembler uses 80 Flux to craft an item from a recipe.[9]
Arc Furnace electrodes lose 1 damage per tick while the furnace is working. They are set to 96,000 maximum damage, which lasts 8 consecutive in-game days. Arc Furnace recycling is no longer a config option. It is controlled through a datapack recipe file instead.[9]
The common config sets which mod IE should prefer for processing results, such as the copper the Excavator digs up or crushing recipes with no IE item. In this pack that list is preferredOres, set to tfc first, then minecraft.[10]
Fluids and item storage
Barrels keep their fluid when broken, but they cannot store hot fluids or gases. Trying to put a hot fluid or a gas into a container that can't hold it gives you an error message. Storage crates keep their inventory when broken.[4]
The Bottling Machine can be switched between holding containers until they are full and allowing partial filling. Pumps can be toggled to replace fluid blocks with cobblestone. The game warns that this can cause lag with large amounts of fluid.[4]
Several blocks have redstone control that can be inverted or not, and some can emit a strong redstone signal. Which blocks offer each option is not covered in the sources I have.[4]
Moving items around
For automation, the mod's advancements point to Conveyor Belts, Dropping and Extracting Conveyor Belts, the Item Router, the Item Batcher and Sheetmetal Chutes. The sources give only their names, not how they behave.[4]
Unverified Exact throughput, multiblock layouts for individual machines (other than the Crusher and Excavator sizes), and per-machine energy use beyond the Assembler were not available in the sources, so they are not covered here. Check the Engineer's Manual in-game for those.
How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering in this pack starts with treated wood and the Engineer's workstations, then moves on to the Engineer's tools, then bricks for coke and the blast furnace. Past that, the recipes show steel and aluminium gear. Here is the path in order, with the spots where the pack changed things.[5][6][7]
Treated wood and your first machines
One quest chapter asks for 8 Treated Wood Planks (a quest in "?"). The mod's own recipe makes treated planks from planks and creosote. The pack also changes a Create filling recipe so that any plank type can become treated planks.[5][6]
Filling (create)

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?
5 parts
Immersive Engineering is deeply wired into the rest of this pack. The biggest link is TerraFirmaCraft, and the pack changed a lot of IE's recipes to fit it. Create, Thermal, Immersive Petroleum and a few others also trade items with IE.[11]
TerraFirmaCraft: ingots, ores and materials
The pack changed IE's arc furnace so ore processing gives you TFC ingots instead of IE ones. Copper, gold, wrought iron, nickel, silver, tin and zinc all come out as TFC ingots. The arc furnace and the blast furnace both make Steel Ingot too. IE's own nickel and silver ores, including the deepslate versions, also smelt into Nickel Ingot and Silver Ingot.[11]
The pack changed several IE crafting recipes to bring in TFC items such as Jute Fiber, Wool Cloth and Torch. The recipes below show the exact in-pack versions.[11]

The pack changed this recipe to use TFC parts.
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: immersiveengineering:crafting/conveyor_dropper
The pack changed this recipe: the Dropping Conveyor Belt now needs a TFC Wrought Iron Trapdoor.
The pack also added mineral mix recipes that yield TFC ores and rocks. Examples are Lignite, Rich Hematite and the three grades of native silver, alongside IE's Raw Lead and Raw Uranium.[11]
Ex Machinis compacting recipes, also added by the pack, turn TFC garnierite into Raw Nickel and TFC native silver into Raw Silver.[11]
The pack changed or added squeezer and fermenter recipes for TFC crops, including Wheat Seeds, Soybean Seeds, Sugarcane Seeds and Sugarcane. These feed Plant Oil and Ethanol production. The fermenter's honey recipe also ties in Firmalife's Empty Jar. Crushing lapis ore gives Sulfur Dust and Cut Lapis Lazuli.[11]
Squeezer (immersiveengineering)
Recipe id: immersiveengineering:squeezer/wheat_seeds
The pack changed this squeezer recipe.
Fermenter (immersiveengineering)
Recipe id: immersiveengineering:fermenter/sugar_cane
The pack changed this fermenter recipe.
Create
Create's crushed ores feed IE metals. Crushed aluminum and uranium ore smelt or blast into Aluminium Ingot and Uranium Ingot. The pack changed the crushed lead recipes so they give Lead Ingot. Washing crushed ores gives IE nuggets: aluminum, uranium, lead, nickel, silver and copper. Crushing tuff or Veridium also drops Copper Nugget.[11]
Sequenced Assembly (create)
Cogwheel
4× Incomplete Precision Mechanism
Large Cogwheel
- any iron nugget
- any gold plate
Recipe id: create:sequenced_assembly/precision_mechanism
The pack changed this recipe, and its listed items include IE's Gold Plate.
The pack also added a Create compacting recipe that uses the Metal Press Mold: Gear press mold to make Brass Mechanisms from brass ingots.[11]
Thermal
The pack made Thermal's Redstone Flux Cell, Fluid Cell and Expanded Tank Construction augment need Duroplast Sheet. Thermal's press packs coal coke, constantan and electrum into IE's Block of Coal Coke, Block of Constantan and Electrum Ingot. Its centrifuge splits bronze dust into Copper Grit and Tin Dust. Earth Charges can also make Sulfur Dust.[11]
Crafting Shaped
| any wrought iron sheet | any wrought iron sheet | |

Immersive Petroleum
Immersive Petroleum builds on IE parts. The Flarestack, Portable Generator, Projector, Seismic Survey Tool, Motorboat and Expanded Fuel Tank are all IE-based crafts. The pack also changed Immersive Petroleum's own arc furnace steel recipe. The hydrotreater's sulfur recovery recipe, changed by the pack, outputs Sulfur Dust along with Diesel.[11]

Other connections
- Blood Magic: the pack changed an alchemy table recipe that uses the Lava Sigil to produce Sulfur Dust.[11]
- Bigger Reactors: its Uranium Ore smelts into Uranium Ingot. Thermal's pulverizer turns it into Uranium Grit and gravel.[11]
Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Immersive Engineering?
3 parts
All of this mod's quests in the pack sit in one chapter. The chapter title shows up in the quest data only as an unresolved text key, so I can't give you its display name. Every quest here is an item-collection task.[3]
Getting set up
Some quests have no prerequisite listed, so you can start on them straight away. a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for 8 Treated Wood Planks. a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for the Engineer's Crafting Table, and a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for the Engineer's Workbench.[3]
"{gravitas.quest.caveman.blueprints}" quest is the blueprint quest. It has several separate tasks, and each one asks for an Engineer's Blueprint. It also has no prerequisite listed.[3]
Tools and bricks
"{gravitas.quest.caveman.engineers_tools}" quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver. It unlocks after another quest that isn't part of this chapter's data, so I can't tell you what that one asks for.[3]
Once the tools quest is done, a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" opens up. It asks for 27 Coke Brick.[3]
The last quest in the chain is a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}", which asks for a single Blast Brick. It needs the coke brick quest finished first, plus another quest that isn't in this chapter's data.[3]
Order at a glance
- Any time: the treated wood, crafting table, workbench and blueprint quests have no prerequisite listed.[3]
- Engineer's tools quest, which follows a quest outside this chapter's data.[3]
- Coke brick quest, after the tools quest.[3]
- Blast brick quest, after the coke brick quest and one other quest outside this chapter's data.[3]
Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering keeps its settings in client, common and server config files, and the server file is the one that matters most for gameplay. In this pack it sits in the defaultconfigs folder, so it is applied to new worlds. An existing world keeps its own copy under its saves folder in serverconfig, and edits to the pack file will not change that copy.[9][10]
Ore generation
This one catches a lot of people out. The pack sets the vein size to 0 for every IE ore: ores.bauxite.vein_size, ores.deep_nickel.vein_size, ores.lead.vein_size, ores.nickel.vein_size, ores.silver.vein_size and ores.uranium.vein_size. The option's own description says a vein size of 0 disables generation, so you should not expect to find IE's own ores in the ground of a world created with this file.[9]
preferredOres is set to tfc first, then minecraft. That list is in priority order and decides which mod's items IE processes should produce, including the ores the Excavator digs up and crushing recipes with no IE item attached.[10]
Excavator
- machines.excavator.yield is 38,400, the maximum yield you can pull from one chunk. A negative number would make it infinite.[9]
- machines.excavator.consumption is 4,096 Flux per tick while digging.[9]
- machines.excavator.chance is 0.9 (higher means fewer mineral veins) and machines.excavator.initial_depletion is 0.2.[9]
- machines.excavator.particles is true. Set it to false if the particle storm bothers you.[9]
Power and wires
- Capacitors: LV stores 100,000 Flux at 256 per tick in and out, MV stores 1,000,000 at 1,024, and HV stores 4,000,000 at 4,096.[9]
- wires.copper.transferRate is 2,048 IF/t.[9]
- wires.copper.loss is 0.05, the fraction of power lost over each stretch of distance in copper wire.[9]
- wires.copper.maxLength is 16 blocks.[9]
- wires.electrum.transferRate is 8,192 IF/t.[9]
- wires.electrum.loss is 0.025, so electrum wastes less power than copper.[9]
- wires.electrum.maxLength is 16 blocks.[9]
- wires.hv.transferRate is 32,768 IF/t.[9]
- wires.hv.loss is 0.025.[9]
- wires.hv.maxLength is 32 blocks.[9]
- wires.enableWireDamage and wires.blocksBreakWires are both true. Live wires hurt entities that touch them, and placing a block in a wire breaks it and drops the coil.[9]
- machines.lightning_output is 16,000,000 Flux per lightning strike, and machines.dieselGen_output is 4,096 Flux per tick.[9]
Machine speed and upkeep
Every machine's energy and time modifier is left at 1, so recipes run at their normal cost and speed. That covers the arc furnace, crusher, metal press, mixer, squeezer, fermenter, sawmill, bottling machine, auto workbench and refinery energy modifier. The garden cloche growth modifier is also 1.[9]
- machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage is 96,000. Electrodes take 1 damage per tick while the furnace works, and the file notes this lasts 8 consecutive in-game days. That matches the default value the file mentions.[9]
- tools.hammer_durability is 100 and tools.cutter_durability is 250.[9]
- machines.pump.infiniteWater is true, so the Fluid Pump can draw infinite water from sources. machines.pump.placeCobble is also true, so it replaces fluids it picks up with cobblestone.[9]
- machines.floodlight.spawnPrevent and machines.lantern.spawnPrevent are true, so floodlights and powered lanterns stop mob spawning.[9]
Client options
- disableFancyTESR is true. It simplifies lighting on dynamically rendered models, which the config says affects turrets and garden cloches and may improve FPS.[8]
- enableVBO is false. The config warns that turning it on is faster but may clash with visual effects from other mods.[8]
- manualGuiScale is 4 and increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5, which makes windmills visible from further away.[8]
What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?
3 parts
All the Mods - Gravitas 2.9 ships Immersive Engineering 1.18.2-8.3.1-157. The mod has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so this section only covers the mod's own changelogs.[2]
Changes from 8.3.0
The 8.3.0-155 release comes before the 8.3.1 version you have in the pack. It was a big polish update, and these are the notable parts.[2][12]
- New machine sounds for the Assembler, Bottling Machine, Coke Oven, Fermenter, Mixer, Preheaters, Refinery and Sawmill.[12]
- A particle overhaul: more particles for the Crusher, Sample Drill and Excavator, more on the Mixer and Diesel Generator, and smoke on the Arc and Blast Furnaces. The Sawmill blade also stops when the machine is off.[12]
- The Crusher model now has interlocking wheels, and the Arc Furnace got an updated texture.[12]
- The Cloche's GUI now has a process indicator.[12]
- The Arc Furnace can recycle additional items.[12]
- Lead, Silver and Deepslate Nickel Ores got higher spawn chances.[12]
- The Silo and Tank bounding boxes are now stepped at the top.[12]
Fixes from 8.3.0
- Fixed data loss in toolboxes.[12]
- Fixed the Diesel Generator running infinitely on too little fuel.[12]
- Fixed incorrect item router behavior and rounding errors in comparator output.[12]
- Fixed revolvers not acquiring perks from all their components.[12]
- Fixed CraftTweaker integration for the Cloche and issues in mixer data loading.[12]
- Fixed the manual not opening on a lectern, and very large multiblocks displaying badly in the manual.[12]
Newer than this pack: 8.4.0
For reference, 8.4.0 overhauls the Accumulator Backpack, which is crafted as an empty frame that you put an accumulator in. It also adds the Rock Softening Acid upgrade for the Mining Drill (Fortune 3) and speeds up the rockcutter and grinding disk.[13]
