What is Immersive Engineering?
1 part
Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic machines. Instead of glowing tubes you get actual hanging powerlines, and instead of a single block that spits out dust you get big working multiblocks. The crusher is a 5x3x3 multiblock with rotating wheels, and the Excavator is a resource-hungry 3x7x8 multiblock that digs ore out of the ground with a bucketwheel.[1]
Power uses the Forge Energy API, but it doesn't move through lanes of blocks like in many other tech mods. You span cables between connectors. Generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The mod can be played fully standalone, so you can learn it without any other tech mod. It also has its own in-game documentation, the Engineer's Manual.[1]
This pack ships Immersive Engineering 1.18.2-8.3.1-157, and it has been in the pack since version 1.1 or earlier.[2]
Where it fits in the pack
Immersive Engineering shows up early. Chapter 1 of the quest book has a run of quests that walk you into the mod's basics, roughly in this order:[3]
- Get 8 Treated Wood Planks (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}").[3]
- Make the Engineer's Crafting Table (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}").[3]
- Collect the Engineer's Blueprint items the quest asks for ("{gravitas.quest.caveman.blueprints}" quest).[3]
- Make the Engineer's Workbench (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}").[3]
- Get the Engineer's tools: Engineer's Hammer, Engineer's Wire Cutters and Engineer's Screwdriver ("{gravitas.quest.caveman.engineers_tools}" quest).[3]
- Collect 27 Coke Brick (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}").[3]
- Make a Blast Brick (a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}"), which unlocks after the coke brick quest and one other quest.[3]
So the early game goes from treated wood and the Engineer's tools to coke bricks and then blast bricks. The tools quest itself unlocks after another quest that isn't part of the mod's chain.[3]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star quest path uses Immersive Engineering is not shown by the sources here. Check the pack's quest book for that path to see it.
How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around hanging power lines and big multiblock machines. Before you build anything, grab the Engineer's Manual, the mod's own in-game documentation. It's crafted with a book and a lever, and the mod has an advancement for acquiring it.[1][4]
Treated Wood
Your first material is Treated Wood Planks. The pack has a quest asking for 8 of them, and the mod has an advancement for crafting some. You need it early because the crafting table and workbench recipes below both call for treated wood slabs.[4][5][6]
Shaped Fluid (immersiveengineering)
| any plank | any plank | any plank |

Crafting Table and Workbench
Next, make the Engineer's Crafting Table, then the Engineer's Workbench. Make them in that order, because the workbench recipe uses the crafting table. The pack changed the workbench recipe from the mod's default, so follow the recipe below rather than what you remember from other packs. The mod describes the workbench as the place where you modify your tools.[4][6]

Each of these has its own quest, so you get quest credit as you go.[5]
The Engineer's tools
One quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver together: "{gravitas.quest.caveman.engineers_tools}" quest. The pack changed the hammer and wire cutter recipes from the mod's defaults. The screwdriver recipe is the mod's own.[6][7]

Coke Bricks and Blast Bricks
After the tools quest, the quest book sends you after Coke Brick. The quest a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for 27 of them, so start collecting early. A follow-up quest, a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}", asks for a Blast Brick. Both recipes are the mod's own.[6][7]

Blueprints
The quest a quest in "?" asks for three Engineer's Blueprint items. This pack has more than one blueprint recipe. It changed the components blueprint and added the electrode blueprint, so check these two against what you know from other packs.[5][6]

How does Immersive Engineering work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering is built around realism-inspired tech. Instead of glowing pipes, you get actual hanging power lines, and instead of one block that spits out dust, you get big multiblocks with moving parts. The mod uses the Forge Energy API but can be played fully standalone, and its in-game documentation is the Engineer's Manual.[1]
Power: cables, not block lanes
Power does not travel through lanes of adjacent blocks. It travels through cables spanned between connectors. For generation, the mod offers waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more. The pack also tracks a Kinetic Dynamo and a Diesel Generator multiblock as milestones.[1][4]
Energy is shown in Flux. Blocks can report how much energy they hold, the average transferred over a number of ticks in Flux per tick, and the average loss between wire points. Use those readouts to see where a line is wasting power.[4]
Not every wire coil carries power. The construction coils are decoration only and transmit no power, while the redstone coil carries redstone signals instead. In the pack's client config, copper, electrum, steel and redstone wires each have a colour setting, and so do insulated copper and electrum.[4][8]
Multiblocks
Many of the mod's machines are multiblocks. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 structure and the Excavator is a 3x7x8 structure with a bucketwheel. The pack tracks these multiblocks as milestones:[1][4]
- Arc Furnace, Coke Oven, Crude Blast Furnace and Improved Blast Furnace[4]
- Crusher, Metal Press, Squeezer and Mixer[4]
- Fermenter and Refinery[4]
- Diesel Generator and Excavator[4]
- Silo and Tank, for bulk storage[4]
Tuning machines in this pack
The Arc Furnace, Auto Workbench and Bottling Machine each have an energy modifier and a time modifier. Each is a multiplier on every recipe's energy cost or time. They are all set to 1 in the pack, so those machines run at their normal recipe values. The Assembler uses 80 Flux to craft an item from a recipe.[9]
Arc Furnace electrodes lose 1 damage per tick while the furnace is working. They are set to 96,000 maximum damage, which lasts 8 consecutive in-game days. Arc Furnace recycling is no longer a config option. It is controlled through a datapack recipe file instead.[9]
The common config sets which mod IE should prefer for processing results, such as the copper the Excavator digs up or crushing recipes with no IE item. In this pack that list is preferredOres, set to tfc first, then minecraft.[10]
Fluids and item storage
Barrels keep their fluid when broken, but they cannot store hot fluids or gases. Trying to put a hot fluid or a gas into a container that can't hold it gives you an error message. Storage crates keep their inventory when broken.[4]
The Bottling Machine can be switched between holding containers until they are full and allowing partial filling. Pumps can be toggled to replace fluid blocks with cobblestone. The game warns that this can cause lag with large amounts of fluid.[4]
Several blocks have redstone control that can be inverted or not, and some can emit a strong redstone signal. Which blocks offer each option is not covered in the sources I have.[4]
Moving items around
For automation, the mod's advancements point to Conveyor Belts, Dropping and Extracting Conveyor Belts, the Item Router, the Item Batcher and Sheetmetal Chutes. The sources give only their names, not how they behave.[4]
Unverified Exact throughput, multiblock layouts for individual machines (other than the Crusher and Excavator sizes), and per-machine energy use beyond the Assembler were not available in the sources, so they are not covered here. Check the Engineer's Manual in-game for those.
How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering in this pack starts with treated wood and the Engineer's workstations, then moves on to the Engineer's tools, then bricks for coke and the blast furnace. Past that, the recipes show steel and aluminium gear. Here is the path in order, with the spots where the pack changed things.[5][6][7]
Treated wood and your first machines
One quest chapter asks for 8 Treated Wood Planks (a quest in "?"). The mod's own recipe makes treated planks from planks and creosote. The pack also changes a Create filling recipe so that any plank type can become treated planks.[5][6]

Engineer's tools
In another chapter, "{gravitas.quest.caveman.engineers_tools}" quest wants the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver. The pack changed the first two, and the screwdriver is the mod's own version. All three are shown below.[6][7]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?
4 parts
In this pack, many Immersive Engineering recipes were rewired so the mod plugs into TerraFirmaCraft metals, Create processing, Thermal machines and more. Here are the connections that show up in the pack's recipes.[11]
TerraFirmaCraft: metals and materials
- The pack changed the Arc Furnace ore recipes for copper, gold, iron, nickel, silver, tin and zinc so they output TFC ingots. Iron ore gives a Wrought Iron Ingot, and silver ore gives a Silver Ingot.[11]
- Steel follows the same pattern. The Blast Furnace and both Arc Furnace steel recipes, including the Immersive Petroleum one, give you a Steel Ingot.[11]
- Smelting or blasting IE nickel and silver ore (normal and deepslate) gives Nickel Ingot and Silver Ingot. The pack changed all of these recipes.[11]
- The pack added mineral vein recipes. The claystone and shale veins list Raw Uranium with Lignite. The gneiss and granite veins list Raw Lead with TFC native silver, and the basalt vein lists raw lead and raw uranium with Rich Hematite. Each vein also lists its matching TFC rock types.[11]
- The pack added Ex Machinis compacting recipes that turn TFC garnierite into Raw Nickel and TFC native silver into Raw Silver, in poor, normal and rich grades.[11]
- The Squeezer has recipes that pair Plant Oil with TFC crop seeds such as wheat, rye, oat, soybean and sugarcane seeds. The pack changed or added all of them. The Fermenter has recipes pairing Ethanol with TFC sugarcane, and with honey, where an Empty Jar is listed as the output.[11]
- The Crusher turns lapis ore into Sulfur Dust and a Cut Lapis Lazuli.[11]
Several IE crafting recipes were also changed to use TFC materials, so you will meet jute and wool cloth early. Here are a few examples.[11]

Create
- Create's crushed aluminum and uranium ore smelt or blast into Aluminium Ingot and Uranium Ingot using the mod's own compat recipes. The pack changed crushed lead so it gives Lead Ingot.[11]
- Create's splashing turns crushed ores into IE nuggets: aluminium, uranium, lead, nickel and silver. The lead, nickel and silver recipes were changed by the pack. Splashing crushed copper gives Copper Nugget and a clay ball, also a pack change.[11]
- Crushing tuff or veridium in the pack drops Copper Nugget among its other outputs.[11]
- A compacting recipe added by the pack uses Metal Press Mold: Gear as a mold. The mold is returned, and you get Brass Mechanisms.[11]
The pack also changed Create's precision mechanism sequenced assembly, and IE's Gold Plate appears among the items in that recipe.[11]
Sequenced Assembly (create)

Thermal, Bigger Reactors and Blood Magic
- The pack changed the Redstone Flux Cell, Fluid Cell and Expanded Tank Construction recipes so they use IE's Duroplast Sheet.[11]
- The Thermal Press, with a Packing Die (3x3), packs constantan nuggets into Constantan Ingot and constantan ingots into Block of Constantan. It also packs electrum nuggets into Electrum Ingot and coal coke into Block of Coal Coke. The pack changed these recipes.[11]
- The Thermal Centrifuge splits bronze dust into Copper Grit and Tin Dust.[11]
- Bigger Reactors uranium ore smelts into Uranium Ingot, and the Thermal Pulverizer turns it into Uranium Grit plus gravel. Both recipes were changed by the pack.[11]
- Sulfur has several routes into the IE dust: Blood Magic's Lava Sigil in the alchemy table, a Thermal Earth Charge, and the Immersive Petroleum hydrotreater. The pack changed all three.[11]
Immersive Petroleum
Immersive Petroleum builds directly on IE parts, and the recipes below are the mod's own, not pack changes. The Flarestack, Portable Generator, Seismic Survey Tool, Motorboat and Expanded Fuel Tank all use IE components, fluid pipes, generators, barrels or engineering blocks.[11]

Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Immersive Engineering?
2 parts
Immersive Engineering appears in a single quest chapter in this pack. Its quests are mostly plain "obtain this item" tasks, so they walk you through the mod's early tools and machine materials.[3]
Quests with no listed prerequisite
These quests list no prerequisite in the quest data, so you can pick them up whenever you like.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks you to hand in 8 Treated Wood Planks.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for an Engineer's Crafting Table.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for an Engineer's Workbench.[3]
- "{gravitas.quest.caveman.blueprints}" quest has several separate tasks, and each one asks for an Engineer's Blueprint.[3]
The tool and brick chain
The rest of the quests form a chain. This is the order to follow.[3]
- "{gravitas.quest.caveman.engineers_tools}" quest asks for the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver. It also lists a prerequisite quest that these sources do not describe.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" unlocks after the tools quest and asks for 27 Coke Brick.[3]
- a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" asks for a Blast Brick. It unlocks after the coke brick quest and after a second prerequisite quest that these sources do not describe.[3]
Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.6b guide
Immersive Engineering keeps its settings in client, common and server config files, and the server file is the one that matters most for gameplay. In this pack it sits in the defaultconfigs folder, so it is applied to new worlds. An existing world keeps its own copy under its saves folder in serverconfig, and edits to the pack file will not change that copy.[9][10]
Ore generation
This one catches a lot of people out. The pack sets the vein size to 0 for every IE ore: ores.bauxite.vein_size, ores.deep_nickel.vein_size, ores.lead.vein_size, ores.nickel.vein_size, ores.silver.vein_size and ores.uranium.vein_size. The option's own description says a vein size of 0 disables generation, so you should not expect to find IE's own ores in the ground of a world created with this file.[9]
preferredOres is set to tfc first, then minecraft. That list is in priority order and decides which mod's items IE processes should produce, including the ores the Excavator digs up and crushing recipes with no IE item attached.[10]
Excavator
- machines.excavator.yield is 38,400, the maximum yield you can pull from one chunk. A negative number would make it infinite.[9]
- machines.excavator.consumption is 4,096 Flux per tick while digging.[9]
- machines.excavator.chance is 0.9 (higher means fewer mineral veins) and machines.excavator.initial_depletion is 0.2.[9]
- machines.excavator.particles is true. Set it to false if the particle storm bothers you.[9]
Power and wires
- Capacitors: LV stores 100,000 Flux at 256 per tick in and out, MV stores 1,000,000 at 1,024, and HV stores 4,000,000 at 4,096.[9]
- wires.copper.transferRate is 2,048 IF/t.[9]
- wires.copper.loss is 0.05, the fraction of power lost over each stretch of distance in copper wire.[9]
- wires.copper.maxLength is 16 blocks.[9]
- wires.electrum.transferRate is 8,192 IF/t.[9]
- wires.electrum.loss is 0.025, so electrum wastes less power than copper.[9]
- wires.electrum.maxLength is 16 blocks.[9]
- wires.hv.transferRate is 32,768 IF/t.[9]
- wires.hv.loss is 0.025.[9]
- wires.hv.maxLength is 32 blocks.[9]
- wires.enableWireDamage and wires.blocksBreakWires are both true. Live wires hurt entities that touch them, and placing a block in a wire breaks it and drops the coil.[9]
- machines.lightning_output is 16,000,000 Flux per lightning strike, and machines.dieselGen_output is 4,096 Flux per tick.[9]
Machine speed and upkeep
Every machine's energy and time modifier is left at 1, so recipes run at their normal cost and speed. That covers the arc furnace, crusher, metal press, mixer, squeezer, fermenter, sawmill, bottling machine, auto workbench and refinery energy modifier. The garden cloche growth modifier is also 1.[9]
- machines.arc_furnace.electrodeDamage is 96,000. Electrodes take 1 damage per tick while the furnace works, and the file notes this lasts 8 consecutive in-game days. That matches the default value the file mentions.[9]
- tools.hammer_durability is 100 and tools.cutter_durability is 250.[9]
- machines.pump.infiniteWater is true, so the Fluid Pump can draw infinite water from sources. machines.pump.placeCobble is also true, so it replaces fluids it picks up with cobblestone.[9]
- machines.floodlight.spawnPrevent and machines.lantern.spawnPrevent are true, so floodlights and powered lanterns stop mob spawning.[9]
Client options
- disableFancyTESR is true. It simplifies lighting on dynamically rendered models, which the config says affects turrets and garden cloches and may improve FPS.[8]
- enableVBO is false. The config warns that turning it on is faster but may clash with visual effects from other mods.[8]
- manualGuiScale is 4 and increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5, which makes windmills visible from further away.[8]
What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?
3 parts
Gravitas 3.1 ships Immersive Engineering 1.18.2-8.3.1-157. The mod has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier. There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, so this section only covers the mod's own changelogs.[2]
What your version already includes (8.3.0)
The 8.3.0-155 changelog is the newest one I can tie to your version. Your 8.3.1 build comes after it, so these changes should all be in your game. I have no changelog for 8.3.1-157 itself, so I can't say what that small update changed.[2][12]
- The Cloche's GUI now has a process indicator.[12]
- New sounds for the Assembler, Bottling Machine, Coke Oven, Fermenter, Mixer, Preheaters, Refinery and Sawmill.[12]
- More items can be recycled in the Arc Furnace.[12]
- A particle overhaul: new and expanded particles for the Crusher, Sample Drill and Excavator, more particles on the Mixer and Diesel Generator, and smoke on the Arc and Blast Furnaces. The Sawmill blade also stops when the machine is off.[12]
- The Crusher model now has interlocking wheels, and the Arc Furnace texture was updated.[12]
- Lead, Silver and Deepslate Nickel Ores have increased spawn chances.[12]
- The Silo and Tank bounding boxes are now stepped at the top.[12]
Bug fixes in 8.3.0
- The Diesel Generator no longer runs infinitely on too little fuel.[12]
- Toolboxes no longer lose data.[12]
- Revolvers now get perks from all their components.[12]
- Item router behavior was corrected.[12]
- The manual now opens when on a lectern, and very large multiblocks display better in it.[12]
- CraftTweaker integration for the Cloche was fixed, along with comparator output rounding errors and some JEI issues.[12]
Newer than your pack (8.4.0)
The 8.4.0-161 changelog describes a newer release than the 8.3.1 build in Gravitas 3.1, so its changes are not in this pack. That includes the Accumulator Backpack overhaul and the Rock Softening Acid drill upgrade that gives Fortune 3. If you see them in other videos or guides, they come from a newer version of the mod.[2][13]
