What is Ex Nihilo: Sequentia?
Ex Nihilo: Sequentia is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 1.18.2-20230528-221633, in the file ExNihiloSequentia-1.18.2-20230528-221633.jar.[1]
Unverified The sources for this guide don't describe what the mod does in this pack, who it suits, or where it fits in progression. They also don't confirm any pack-specific recipe, config or quest changes for it. Until those are confirmed, treat any mod defaults you know from elsewhere as possibly different here. No quests involving the mod and no ATM Star path placement were found.
How do you get started with Ex Nihilo: Sequentia?
4 parts
Ex Nihilo: Sequentia adds a set of hand-crafted tools and workstations, and in this pack they are all normal crafting recipes. Here is the order I would make them in. The recipe blocks show the exact in-pack recipes, so check those for ingredients.[2]
Start with a crook
Your first craft is the Wooden Crook. The pack also has other crooks, such as the Stone Crook and the Bone Crook.[2]

Make a barrel and a sieve
Next, make an Oak Barrel and an Oak Sieve. Every wood type has its own barrel, sieve and crucible recipe, so you can use whichever wood you have on hand, including the Nether woods like crimson and warped.[2]

How does Ex Nihilo: Sequentia work?
7 parts
Ex Nihilo: Sequentia revolves around barrels, crucibles and crooks. The numbers below come from this pack's config file, the mod's tooltips and the pack's recipes, so they are the values you will actually see in this pack.[2][3][4]
Barrels
Barrels come in several wood types, such as Acacia Barrel, Birch Barrel, Dark Oak Barrel and Crimson Barrel. In this pack a barrel holds 1 bucket of fluid, set by barrel.barrelNumberOfBuckets. Rain fills it by 2 per iteration (barrel.rainFillAmount).[2][4]

The other wood barrels follow the same pattern with their own planks and slabs.
Barrels handle composting, fluid transformation and mob spawning, and each one is timed in the config. All of these timers are set to 10 seconds in this pack:[4]
- Composting: the barrel needs 1,000 solids before composting starts (barrel.compost.maxSolidAmount). Composting then takes 10 seconds (barrel.compost.secondsToCompost).[4]
- Fluid transformation takes 10 seconds (barrel.fluid_transform.secondsToTransformFluid).[4]
- Mob spawning takes 10 seconds (barrel.mob_spawn.secondsToSpawnMobs).[4]
barrel.woodBarrelMaxTemp sets the hottest fluid a wooden barrel accepts. It is 300 here, and the config notes that water is 300.[4]
Dolls and mob spawning
Mobs come from dolls added to a barrel with the right fluid. The mod's tooltips say a Buzzing Doll goes into witch water to spawn a Bee. A Blazing Doll goes into lava to spawn a Blaze. An Creeping Doll goes into witch water to spawn an Enderman. The mod also has a Guardian doll for sea water and a Shulker doll for witch water.[2][3]
The bee, blaze and enderman dolls are each crafted from a Procelain Doll. That base doll can be made from Porcelain Clay with either a diamond or an emerald.[2]

Crucibles
Crucibles use the same wood variants, for example Acacia Crucible and Dark Oak Crucible. Here a crucible holds 4 buckets (crucible.crucibleNumberOfBuckets) and does one melting operation every 20 ticks (crucible.ticksBetweenMelts).[2][4]
A wood crucible heats at a fixed rate of 2 regardless of its heat source (crucible.wood.woodHeatRate).[4]

Crooks and infested leaves
Crooks are how you get string from infested leaves. A crook drops at least 2 string (crook.minStringCount). It can add up to 3 bonus string on top (crook.maxBonusStringCount). It also simulates breaking a leaf block 3 times to collect the normal drops (crook.vanillaDropSimulateCount).[4]
Infested leaves spread on their own. A spread attempt happens every 100 ticks (infested_leaves.ticksBetweenSpreadAttempt) with a 0.3 chance (infested_leaves.spreadChance). Leaves take 10 seconds to become fully infested (infested_leaves.secondsToTransformLeaves).[4]
Tool durability in this pack
The pack changed the durability of the gold and iron crooks compared with the mod defaults. The Gold Crook has 64 durability instead of the default 32 (durability.crook.crookGoldValue). The iron crook has 512 instead of the default 256 (durability.crook.crookIronValue).[4]
The other crook values listed match the mod defaults. Andesite, diorite, granite, stone and Bone Crook each have 256. Wood has 128, Diamond Crook has 2,048 and netherite has 8,192.[2][4]
Hammers also use the mod defaults. Golden Hammer has 64, iron has 512, Diamond Hammer has 4,096 and netherite has 8,192. Wood has 128 and stone has 256.[2][4]
Meshes and pack recipe changes
The config lists these mesh durabilities, all at the mod defaults: String Mesh 59, Flint Mesh 131, Iron Mesh 250, Diamond Mesh 1,561, Emerald Mesh 1,561 and netherite 2,031. The config comments say these only matter if mesh durability is enabled.[2][4]
The pack also rewrote the recipe for the Emerald Mesh, so don't rely on the mod's default. The End Cake recipe was changed too.[2]

Ore pieces
The config has per-metal toggles for ore pieces, chunks and ingots, covering aluminum, copper, gold, iron, lead, nickel and platinum. They only take effect when ore.enableOreOverride is true, and it is false in this pack. The toggles themselves, such as ore.enableIron, are all true.[4]
How do you progress through Ex Nihilo: Sequentia?
5 parts
Unverified The sources here show no quests that involve this mod, and nothing places it on the main quest path. So there is no official quest order to follow, and the tiers below are built from the in-pack recipes only.
Ex Nihilo: Sequentia progression is mostly about upgrading your tools. The recipes show a clear ladder of crooks, hammers and sieve meshes, and each step builds on the one before. Here is how it looks in this pack.[2]
Wood and stone basics
You can start with wooden gear: a Wooden Crook and a Wooden Hammer. The wooden machines are the Oak Barrel, Oak Sieve and Oak Crucible. Spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson and warped each have their own barrel, sieve and crucible too. A Stone Barrel is also available.[2]
The String Mesh is crafted from string, and it is the base of the mesh upgrade chain. Dirt can also be sieved into seeds such as Acacia Seeds.[2]
Crooks turn leaves into a Silkworm, and they also work on Infested Leaves. You can cook a silkworm into a Cooked Silkworm in a furnace, blast furnace, smoker or campfire.[2]
Pebble and metal tools
Crooks come in several grades. There are pebble crooks such as the Stone Crook, Andesite Crook, Diorite Crook and Granite Crook, plus the Bone Crook. Above those are the Iron Crook, Gold Crook and Diamond Crook.[2]
Hammers follow the same pattern: Stone Hammer, Iron Hammer, Golden Hammer and Diamond Hammer. Hammers crush blocks, for example sand into Dust and netherrack into Crushed Netherrack. They also crush andesite, diorite, granite and end stone.[2]
Meshes build on each other. The Flint Mesh comes after the string mesh, the Iron Mesh comes after the flint mesh, and the Diamond Mesh comes after the iron mesh.[2]

Fluids and the porcelain crucible
Sea Water and Witch Water are both made through fluid transformation recipes. Porcelain Clay also leads to the crucible you fire: first the Unfired Crucible, then the Fired Crucible, which you get by smelting or blasting.[2]

Dolls and ore pieces
Dolls start from a Procelain Doll, which has a diamond version and an emerald version of its recipe. Specialised dolls built on it include the Blazing Doll, Creeping Doll, Floating Doll, Protecting Doll and Buzzing Doll.[2]
Ore pieces such as Tin Pieces and Zinc Pieces convert into their raw forms, Raw Tin and Raw Zinc. Raw Platinum can be smelted or blasted into a Platinum Ingot.[2]
How does Ex Nihilo: Sequentia work with other mods?
3 parts
Ex Nihilo: Sequentia gives you raw metals from sifting, and this pack decides what those metals turn into. The in-pack recipes link the mod with Immersive Engineering, TFC, Beyond Earth and Ex Machinis. No quests in this pack involve the mod, so everything below comes from recipes.[2]
Raw metals smelt into other mods' ingots
The pack changed the smelting and blasting recipes for this mod's raw metals. Instead of giving you an ingot of its own, each raw metal gives you an ingot from another mod. That keeps everything you sift compatible with the rest of the pack.[2]
- Raw Aluminum becomes Aluminium Ingot.[2]
- Raw Lead becomes Lead Ingot.[2]
- Raw Uranium becomes Uranium Ingot.[2]
- Raw Nickel becomes Nickel Ingot.[2]
- Raw Silver becomes Silver Ingot.[2]
- Raw Tin becomes Tin Ingot.[2]
- Raw Zinc becomes Zinc Ingot.[2]
Each of these metals has both a smelting recipe and a blasting recipe, and the pack changed both. Here is the aluminium pair as an example. The other metals follow the same pattern.[2]
Emerald Mesh needs a Beyond Earth metal
The pack changed the recipe for Emerald Mesh so it uses Desh Ingot from Beyond Earth. If you want this mesh in your sieve setup, you need to reach that mod's progression first.[2]

The Flux Hammer is crafted from this mod's Diamond Hammer, so the hammer you already use is the starting point for the automated version. The source marks this as a mod recipe, not a pack change.[2]

Which Ex Nihilo: Sequentia config options matter?
4 parts
Everything here lives in one file, config/exnihilosequentia-common.toml. Good news: the pack leaves almost every option at the mod default. Only two values differ, and both are crook durabilities.[4]
What the pack changed
- Gold crook durability (durability.crook.crookGoldValue) is 64 in this pack. The mod default is 32.[4]
- Iron crook durability (durability.crook.crookIronValue) is 512 in this pack. The mod default is 256.[4]
Sieve settings
- sieve.maxSieveClicks is 10, the maximum of its 1 to 10 range. That is how many clicks it takes to sieve one block.[4]
- sieve.flattenSieveRecipes is true, so the sieve gives results for all mesh tiers below the one in the sieve.[4]
- sieve.enableMeshDurability is false, so meshes don't break and they stack up to the sieve.meshStackSize of 64. The mesh durability values only matter if you turn mesh durability on.[4]
- sieve.sieveRange is 2. That is the radius in which a sieve tries to activate other sieves.[4]
Barrels and crucibles
- A barrel holds barrel.barrelNumberOfBuckets bucket (1), and a crucible holds crucible.crucibleNumberOfBuckets buckets (4).[4]
- Composting starts once the barrel has barrel.compost.maxSolidAmount (1,000) solids, and it then takes barrel.compost.secondsToCompost (10) seconds.[4]
- Rain fills a barrel by barrel.rainFillAmount (2) per iteration.[4]
- Crucibles melt every crucible.ticksBetweenMelts (20) ticks.[4]
Crooks and infested leaves
- A crook drops at least crook.minStringCount (2) string from infested leaves, plus up to crook.maxBonusStringCount (3) extra.[4]
- Infested leaves spread with a infested_leaves.spreadChance chance of 0.3, with 100 ticks between attempts (infested_leaves.ticksBetweenSpreadAttempt).[4]
