What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
This pack ships Sophisticated Backpacks version 3.20.16, using the file sophisticatedbackpacks-1.21-3.20.16.1111.jar.[1]
It isn't a recent addition: it was already in the pack in version 0.32 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a good while.[1]
The sources I have for this mod only cover its version and when it joined the pack. I can't confirm anything else about it here, such as recipes, config values or upgrade details, so I've left those out rather than guess.[1]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks is built around upgrades, and most of the upgrade recipes in this pack start from the same base part. That's where you begin. Here are the first things to make, in the order I'd do them.[2]
Make an Upgrade Base
The Upgrade Base is an ingredient in most of the upgrades below, including the Crafting, Pickup, Smelting, Filter and Stack Starter upgrades. Make a few before you do anything else.[2]

Grab a Stack Upgrade first
The Stack Upgrade Starter Tier multiplies the number of stacks that can fit in a slot by 1.5, which gives you more room.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.30 guide
Sophisticated Backpacks works through upgrades that you slot into the backpack's upgrade tabs. This section covers how those upgrades handle items, fluids and processing, as far as the pack's data explains it.[4]
Workstations in an upgrade tab
Many upgrades add a whole workstation to an upgrade tab. The Crafting Upgrade is a crafting table in a tab, and the Anvil Upgrade is an anvil in a tab. Stonecutter and Smithing Table upgrades exist too. The mod also has Chipped workbench upgrades, such as Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, each showing the matching Chipped block in a tab.[4][5]

Smelting, blasting and smoking
The Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade put smelting, blasting and smoking in an upgrade tab. Blasting is meant for ores and metal items, and smoking is for food.[4][5]
The auto versions do the same jobs, and their tooltips say they automatically pull and push items. These are Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade. The sources don't say which inventory slots or sides they pull from or push to, so test that in your own backpack.[4][5]
In this pack you can move between processing types by crafting. The blasting upgrade can be made from a smelting upgrade, and the auto-blasting and auto-smoking upgrades can be made from the auto-smelting upgrade.[5]

Item handling and automation
The Filter Upgrade filters items that are piped in and/or out of the backpack, so it is the upgrade that controls what automation can move. The Advanced Filter Upgrade does the same with more filtering options.[4][5]
- Deposit Upgrade: deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak-right-click. The advanced version has more filtering options.[4][5]
- Restock Upgrade: the reverse of deposit. It restocks the backpack from a sneak-right-clicked inventory.[4]
- Pickup Upgrade and Magnet Upgrade: the pickup upgrade makes the backpack pick up items. The magnet pulls items in from a range, and the advanced magnet has a greater range.[4]
- Void Upgrade: voids the items you select in its filter.[4]
- Compacting Upgrade: compacts items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The Advanced Compacting Upgrade handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options.[4][5]
- Feeding Upgrade: feeds you with food from the backpack's inventory. The advanced version gives more options for when food is fed.[4][5]
- Refill Upgrade: keeps refilling the stack of selected items in your inventory. You scroll to change the target slot. The advanced version allows more precise target slot selection and middle-click picking of blocks from the backpack.[4]
- Tool Swapper Upgrade: automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one that is effective on the block or entity you left-click.[4]

Fluids, energy and experience
The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The Battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. The sources don't give capacities or how many slots each one takes, so those numbers are not covered here.[4]
The Pump upgrade moves fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and with fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump upgrade pumps experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[4]
Storage size and protection
Stack upgrades multiply the number of stacks that fit in a slot. The multipliers are 1.5 for the starter tier, then 2, 4, 8 and 16 for tiers 1 to 4.[4]
The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The Inception Upgrade lets you put backpacks inside a backpack.[4][5]

Backpack settings also include a toggle for other players opening your backpack. When it is on and the backpack is worn and visible, another player can open it by right-clicking your back. When it is off, they can't, even if the backpack is worn.[4]
Unverified Backpack slot counts, upgrade slot counts, and tank and battery capacities would be set in the mod's config files. The sources here do not include any config files for this mod, so those values, and any changes the pack made to them, are not shown.
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Progression with Sophisticated Backpacks in this pack is about upgrades. You build the Upgrade Base first, then stack more specialised upgrades on top of it, and every upgrade here is a normal crafting-table recipe.[2]
Unverified No quests in this pack involve this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path, so there is no quest-guided order. The order below follows the recipes themselves. The recipes for the backpacks themselves (the backpack tiers) were not in the recipe data I had, so I can't confirm how they are crafted here.
Step 1: the Upgrade Base
Nearly every upgrade in this pack starts from the Upgrade Base. Make a few before anything else.[2]

Step 2: the Stack Upgrade ladder
The stack upgrades form a clear ladder: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, then Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and finally Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Tiers 2, 3 and 4 are each crafted from the tier before. I can't confirm the multiplier each tier gives in this pack, so check the in-game tooltips.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
2 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects with two other mods that the recipes make visible: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. No quests are tied to these links, so everything here comes from the pack's crafting recipes.[2]
Chipped workbench upgrades
Each Chipped workstation has its own backpack upgrade. That means you can carry the crafting station with you and open it from the backpack. Each upgrade is crafted around the matching Chipped block.[2]
- Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade is made from the Alchemy Bench.[2]
- Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade is made from the Botanist Workbench.[2]
- Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade is made from the Carpenters Table.[2]
- Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade is made from the Glassblower.[2]
- Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade is made from the Loom Table.[2]
- Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade is made from the Mason Table.[2]
- Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade is made from the Tinkering Table.[2]
All seven follow the same pattern. Here is the Glassblower one as an example:[2]

Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
Sophisticated Storage has its own upgrades with matching names, and the pack gives you shaped crafting recipes to convert them. You can turn a Storage upgrade into the backpack version, so an upgrade you already own is not wasted when you want it on your back instead of on a chest.[2]
The backpack-from-storage conversions cover a wide range of upgrades, including the Chipped ones. The list includes Magnet Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade, Filter Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, Compacting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade and Void Upgrade. The advanced and auto versions of these are covered as well.[2]

Storage Magnet Upgrade into the backpack version.
The stack upgrades convert too, but the tier names don't line up one to one. Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes Stack Upgrade Starter Tier. After that, Storage tier 2 becomes backpack tier 1, tier 3 becomes tier 2, tier 4 becomes tier 3, and tier 5 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Check the tier name on the item before you convert it.[2]

Conversion also works in the other direction for many upgrades. For example, Magnet Upgrade can be turned into Magnet Upgrade with a shaped recipe that uses planks. The recipes I could confirm for this direction cover the advanced upgrades, the auto-blasting, auto-smelting and auto-smoking upgrades, the blasting upgrade, the Chipped upgrades, and the compacting, crafting, feeding, filter, jukebox, magnet and pickup upgrades.[2]

Unverified I could not confirm a backpack-to-storage conversion recipe for the smelting, smoking, stonecutter, void or stack upgrades. If you need one, check the recipe viewer in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
