What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
2 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks is your answer to cramped inventories. It adds upgradable backpacks that you can customize with filters and extra features. You can wear a backpack in your Curios Back slot, and you can dye it. This pack ships version 3.25.78, and the mod has been here since All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier.[1][2]
The mod is for anyone who wants storage that follows them around. It suits early-game players who just need more room, and it also suits players who want their inventory to manage itself.[2]
Where it fits in the progression
Everything lives in the Basic Storage quest chapter. It starts with "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, which asks for a Backpack. From there the quests branch into backpack tiers and upgrades.[2]
The backpack tiers run "Copper Backpack" quest, then "Iron Backpack" quest, then "Gold Backpack" quest. The Upgrade Base has its own quest, and you need it to make backpack upgrades. Almost every upgrade quest unlocks after it.[2]
What the upgrades do
- Collecting items: the Pickup Upgrade lets the backpack pick up items, and the Magnet Upgrade pulls items into it.[2]
- Built-in machines: the Crafting Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Stonecutter Upgrade add crafting table, furnace, smoker, blast furnace and stonecutter screens.[2]
- Keeping you stocked: the Refill Upgrade keeps your inventory stacked up from the backpack, and the Feeding Upgrade feeds you automatically.[2]
- Space and cleanup: the Stack Upgrade Tier 1 increases stack size in the backpack by 2, and the Void Upgrade auto-deletes items you filter for.[2]
- Extras: the Tank Upgrade adds a tank, the Battery Upgrade adds a battery, and the Everlasting Upgrade stops the backpack from dying.[2]
Several upgrades also have advanced versions with their own quests. The Advanced Restock Upgrade and Advanced Magnet Upgrade are described as offering more filtering options, and each unlocks after its basic version.[2]
Unverified The sources do not show Sophisticated Backpacks on the ATM Star quest path. The order in which the Diamond and Netherite backpack tiers unlock is also unconfirmed.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Your starting inventory fills up fast in a modded pack, and Sophisticated Backpacks is how you fix that. The Basic Storage chapter of the quest book opens with a quest called "Inventories are too Small", and it points you straight at the Backpack. Here is the order I'd go in.[2]
Make the basic Backpack
Start with the plain Backpack. You can wear it in your Curios Back slot, and you can dye it. Upgrades add the extra features, and some of them use filters. The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below.[2][3]

Upgrade it to a Copper Backpack
The quest book calls the Copper Backpack "The First Upgrade". In this pack it is made from your basic Backpack, so you don't start over.[2][3]

The quest line continues with the Iron Backpack, then the Gold Backpack, the Diamond Backpack and finally the Netherite Backpack. You can make the Iron Backpack from a Copper Backpack or straight from a basic Backpack, so skipping a tier is fine.[2][3]

Get the Upgrade Base
The quest for the Upgrade Base says you will need it to make Backpack Upgrades. The Crafting, Deposit and Filter upgrade recipes below all use it, so grab it before you try anything else.[2][3]
Add your first upgrades
The basic upgrade quests, like Pickup, Magnet, Deposit, Crafting and Filter, all come after the Upgrade Base quest, so you can pick whatever fits how you play. These are good first picks:[2]
- Pickup Upgrade lets the Backpack pick up items, and Magnet Upgrade magnets items into it.[2]
- Deposit Upgrade empties the Backpack into an inventory when you Shift-Right Click that inventory.[2]
- Crafting Upgrade adds a Crafting Table GUI to the Backpack.[2]
- Stack Upgrade Tier 1 increases stack size in the Backpack by 2. The higher tiers follow it in the quest line.[2]
- Filter Upgrade adds a filter for items pumped in or out of the Backpack.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
6 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks is built around one idea: the backpack is your storage, and upgrades slotted into its upgrade tabs add machine-like behaviour to it. Smelting, crafting, fluid handling, item filtering and more all live inside the pack you carry. Below is how those systems work in this pack, as far as the available sources explain them.[4]
Furnace-style upgrades
The Smelting, Blasting and Smoking upgrades put a furnace-type machine into an upgrade tab. Blasting is for ores and metal stuff, and smoking is for food. The Auto-smelting, Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking versions go a step further and automatically pull and push items, so the backpack works as a hands-off processing station.[4]
Speed and fuel use are set in the server config. A smelting speed multiplier of 1 equals the speed of a vanilla furnace, and the allowed range is 0.25 to 4.0. This pack leaves server.blastingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier and server.blastingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier at 1, which is the mod default. The auto upgrades use the same pair of settings, for example server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier.[5]
The auto upgrades also have filters that decide what gets pulled in. The pack uses 8 input filter slots (server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.inputFilterSlots) and 4 fuel filter slots (server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelFilterSlots). Both are displayed 4 to a row (server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.inputFilterSlotsInRow and server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelFilterSlotsInRow). Those numbers match the mod defaults, and the blasting and smoking variants use the same values.[5]
The pack has changed the recipes for the Blasting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, and each one has a route that starts from the Smelting Upgrade or the Auto-smelting Upgrade, so you don't have to start over. The exact recipes are shown below.[3]

Crafting and workstation upgrades
Several upgrades just give you a workstation in a tab. The Crafting Upgrade is a crafting table, the Anvil Upgrade is an anvil, and the smithing, stonecutter and sawmill upgrades follow the same pattern. There is also a set of Chipped upgrades, one for each Chipped workbench, such as the Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and the Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade. The Chipped upgrades are all built on the Upgrade Base.[3][4]

The Compacting Upgrade compresses items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options.[3][4]

Item handling and filtering
The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack, which makes it the key piece for automation with pipes or hoppers. The advanced version has more filtering options.[3][4]

Moving items between the backpack and other inventories is done with a sneak right-click. The Deposit Upgrade deposits items from the backpack into the inventory you clicked, and the Restock upgrade pulls items from that inventory into the backpack. Both have advanced versions with more filtering options.[3][4]

Other upgrades handle items passively. The Pickup upgrade makes the backpack pick up items. The Magnet upgrade pulls items into the backpack from range, and the advanced version reaches further. The Void upgrade voids whatever is selected in its filter. The Feeding Upgrade feeds you food from the backpack, and the Refill upgrade keeps a stack of chosen items topped up in your inventory.[3][4]
The advanced upgrades are tuned in the server config. Here is what this pack uses, and every value below matches the mod default.[5]
- Filter slots for the advanced Compacting, Deposit, Feeding, Filter, Pickup, Restock and Void upgrades are all 16, with an allowed range of 1 to 20. For example: server.advancedFilterUpgrade.filterSlots and server.advancedRestockUpgrade.filterSlots.[5]
- server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.filterSlots is 16 as well, with a range of 1 to 20.[5]
- server.advancedRefillUpgrade.filterSlots is 12, with a range of 1 to 20, so the advanced Refill upgrade has fewer filter slots than the others.[5]
- server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange is 5 blocks around the backpack, with an allowed range of 1 to 20.[5]
- server.advancedJukeboxUpgrade.numberOfSlots is 12 disc slots, with an allowed range of 1 to 16.[5]
- Filter slots are displayed 4 to a row, for example server.advancedFilterUpgrade.slotsInRow, and the allowed range for that option is 1 to 6.[5]
server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled is true, so the advanced void upgrade can void anything and is not limited to an overflow-only mode.[5]
Fluids, energy and experience
The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage, and the Battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. The Pump upgrade moves fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids get pumped. The XP Pump upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.[4]
Storage scaling and protection
Stack upgrades change how many stacks fit in each slot. According to their tooltips, the starter tier multiplies it by 1.5, and tiers 1 to 4 multiply it by 2, 4, 8 and 16. The omega tier applies the maximum multiplier of ×33,554,431. Stack downgrades go the other way and divide by 8, 16 and 32 for tiers 1 to 3.[4]
The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The pack has changed its recipe.[3][4]

The Infinity upgrade makes all items in the backpack infinite, and only admins can set the infinite items or break and pick up the backpack. The Survival Infinity upgrade does the same but lets all players do those things. The Inception upgrade lets you put backpacks inside a backpack.[4]
Other players and your backpack
server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true in this pack. That means a player can right-click the back of another player wearing a backpack to open it, provided the owner has that setting switched on for the backpack. Turning the config off disables the feature for everyone and removes the related settings from the backpack.[4][5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Progression for Sophisticated Backpacks in this pack runs through the Basic Storage quest chapter. It starts with the plain Backpack and climbs through Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite backpacks. Alongside that, you unlock a big shelf of upgrades. The recipe dump marks every recipe below as changed by the pack, so the blocks here show the in-pack versions.[2][3]
The backpack tiers
The first quest, "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest, asks for the basic backpack. Its text says backpacks can go in your Curios Back slot and can be dyed.[2]

From there the quest line goes Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, Netherite, and each quest unlocks after the previous tier. The Iron quest also needs the basic backpack quest done, and the pack has an Iron recipe that starts straight from the plain backpack, so Copper is optional.[2][3]
- "Copper Backpack" quest asks for the Copper Backpack, which the quest calls the first upgrade.[2]
- "Iron Backpack" quest asks for the Iron Backpack.[2]
- "Gold Backpack" quest asks for the Gold Backpack.[2]
- "Diamond Backpack" quest asks for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
- "Netherite Backpack" quest asks for the Netherite Backpack.[2]

Upgrade Base and stack upgrades
Nearly every upgrade quest unlocks after a quest in "Basic Storage", which asks for the Upgrade Base. The quest text says you need it to make backpack upgrades, and the pack's recipes for the basic upgrades do use it.[2][3]
The stack upgrades form their own chain. The quest text gives the stack size increase for each tier: Tier 1 gives 2, Tier 2 gives 4, Tier 3 gives 8 and Tier 4 gives 16. The quests are "Stack Upgrade Tier 1" quest, "Stack Upgrade Tier 2" quest, "Stack Upgrade Tier 3" quest and "Stack Upgrade Tier 4" quest. Each one unlocks after the one before it.[2]

Basic and advanced upgrades
After the Upgrade Base quest, the chapter lists a long row of basic upgrades. These include the Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade, Tank Upgrade, Inception Upgrade and Everlasting Upgrade. The quest for the Everlasting Upgrade says it makes the backpack unable to die.[2]
Many of these have an Advanced version with its own quest, titled "More Filtering Options". Examples are the Advanced Filter Upgrade, Advanced Restock Upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade. In the pack, the Advanced upgrades are made by upgrading the basic version of the same upgrade, so craft the basic one first.[2][3]

Smelting line and the XP pump
The smelting upgrades branch out into the Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade. Each has an automatic version, and the quests for those are titled "Automatic". The pack also lets you convert between the types with dedicated recipes. For example, the Blasting Upgrade can be made from a Smelting Upgrade.[2][3]

The last quest on the chain is "Experience Pump Upgrade" quest, which unlocks after "Advanced Pump Upgrade" quest. The quest text says the Experience Pump Upgrade lets you pump experience between you and the backpack.[2]
How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
3 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks links up with the Chipped workbenches and with the Saw from the Sawmill mod, and it shares upgrade conversions with Sophisticated Storage. All of these recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so they are the pack's versions and not the mod defaults.[3]
Chipped workbench upgrades
There is one backpack upgrade for each Chipped workbench: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. Each one is built around its matching workbench block and an Upgrade Base, for example the Mason Table for the Mason Table upgrade.[3]

In the quest book, a quest in "Basic Storage" covers these upgrades. It comes after the Upgrade Base quest, says they add crafting GUIs for the Chipped workbenches to your backpack, and any one of the seven completes it.[2]
Sawmill upgrade
The Sawmill Upgrade works the same way and is built around the Saw from the Sawmill mod.[3]

Converting with Sophisticated Storage
The pack adds crafting recipes that turn a Sophisticated Storage upgrade into the matching backpack upgrade. They cover filters, magnets, pickup, void, the furnace-style upgrades, the Chipped upgrades and the Sawmill upgrade, so you don't need to craft a duplicate if you already own one.[3]
Going the other way, the recipes shown here turn backpack upgrades into Sophisticated Storage ones, from the advanced upgrades through to the Chipped Alchemy Bench upgrade.[3]
The stack upgrades are shifted by one tier in the names. Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus converts to Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, and Stack Upgrade Tier 2 converts to Stack Upgrade Tier 1. Stack Upgrade Tier 3, Stack Upgrade Tier 4 and Stack Upgrade Tier 5 convert to backpack Tiers 2, 3 and 4. The Stack Downgrade Tiers 1 to 3 keep their tier numbers.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Every Sophisticated Backpacks quest in this pack lives in a single chapter, Basic Storage. It's laid out as one backpack line, one upgrade hub, and a lot of upgrade quests branching off that hub. Each quest just asks you to get the item.[2]
The backpack line
- "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest is the entry quest and asks for a Backpack. Its text says backpacks can go in your Curios Back slot and can be dyed.[2]
- "Copper Backpack" quest comes next and asks for the Copper Backpack.[2]
- "Iron Backpack" quest asks for the Iron Backpack. It needs both the entry quest and the Copper Backpack quest.[2]
- "Gold Backpack" quest asks for the Gold Backpack.[2]
- "Diamond Backpack" quest asks for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
- "Netherite Backpack" quest finishes the line with the Netherite Backpack.[2]
The upgrade hub
a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base, and its text says you need it to make backpack upgrades. It unlocks the whole upgrade side of the chapter, and it only requires the entry quest.[2]
These quests each ask for one basic upgrade and unlock straight after the Upgrade Base quest:[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Deposit Upgrade. Shift-right-click an inventory to empty the backpack into it.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Everlasting Upgrade, which makes the backpack unable to die.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Tank Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Pump Upgrade, which pumps liquids from the tank.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Pickup Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Magnet Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Filter Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Void Upgrade, a filter for items you want auto-deleted.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Compacting Upgrade, which compacts to the 2x2 recipe.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Crafting Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Stonecutter Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Jukebox Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Smelting Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Blasting Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Smoking Upgrade. They add a Furnace, Blast Furnace and Smoker GUI respectively.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Refill Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Restock Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Feeding Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Tool Swapper Upgrade.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": Battery Upgrade. a quest in "Basic Storage": Inception Upgrade, which lets you put a backpack inside a backpack.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage": any one of the seven Chipped workbench upgrades, such as Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade or Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade.[2]
Stack upgrades
The stack upgrades are a chain. "Stack Upgrade Tier 1" quest asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 1 (stack size increased by 2) and unlocks after the Upgrade Base quest. After that come "Stack Upgrade Tier 2" quest for Tier 2 (by 4), "Stack Upgrade Tier 3" quest for Tier 3 (by 8) and "Stack Upgrade Tier 4" quest for Tier 4 (by 16). Those figures are what the quest text says.[2]
Advanced and automatic follow-ups
Most basic upgrades have a follow-up quest that unlocks once its basic quest is done. The advanced ones are all labelled More Filtering Options:[2]
- "Advanced Deposit Upgrade" quest (Advanced Deposit Upgrade) follows the Deposit quest.[2]
- "Advanced Filter Upgrade" quest (Advanced Filter Upgrade) follows the Filter quest.[2]
- "Advanced Void Upgrade" quest (Advanced Void Upgrade) follows the Void quest.[2]
- "Advanced Pickup Upgrade" quest (Advanced Pickup Upgrade) follows the Pickup quest, and "Advanced Magnet Upgrade" quest (Advanced Magnet Upgrade) follows the Magnet quest.[2]
- "Advanced Refill Upgrade" quest (Advanced Refill Upgrade), "Advanced Restock Upgrade" quest (Advanced Restock Upgrade), "Advanced Feeding Upgrade" quest (Advanced Feeding upgrade) and "Advanced Tool Swapper Upgrade" quest (Advanced Tool Swapper Upgrade) each follow their basic version.[2]
- "Advanced Compacting Upgrade" quest (Advanced Compacting Upgrade) follows the Compacting quest and compacts to the 3x3 recipe.[2]
- "Advanced Pump Upgrade" quest (Advanced Pump Upgrade) follows the Pump quest.[2]
The Automatic quests follow the three furnace-style quests: "Auto-Smelting Upgrade" quest for the Auto-smelting Upgrade, "Auto-Blasting Upgrade" quest for the Auto-blasting Upgrade and "Auto-Smoking Upgrade" quest for the Auto-smoking Upgrade.[2]
The last quest in the upgrade tree is "Experience Pump Upgrade" quest, titled Storing XP. It asks for the Experience Pump Upgrade, which pumps experience between you and the backpack, and it unlocks after the Advanced Pump Upgrade quest.[2]
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
4 parts
Good news first: every option in this pack's server config that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default. The pack doesn't change any of the numbers below, so what you see is stock Sophisticated Backpacks behaviour. All of these live in the server config file, so on a server the server's copy is the one that counts.[5]
Backpack sizes and upgrade slots
These are the options most players want to know about. Each tier has an inventory size and a number of upgrade slots, and both are left at the mod default.[5]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots (server.leatherBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.leatherBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots (server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.copperBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots (server.ironBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 2 upgrade slots (server.ironBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots (server.goldBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 3 upgrade slots (server.goldBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots (server.diamondBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 5 upgrade slots (server.diamondBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots (server.netheriteBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 7 upgrade slots (server.netheriteBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[5]
Limits and carrying rules
- server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrades one backpack can hold: 3 stack upgrades, 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[5]
- Carrying lots of backpacks doesn't slow you down here. server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false. The threshold in server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 3, but it only matters if you turn the slowness on.[5]
- server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false, so active upgrades like magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding aren't limited to the backpack you're wearing.[5]
- server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true, so on a server a player can right-click another player's worn backpack to open it. Turn it off if that's a problem for your server.[5]
- server.disallowedItems is empty, so no items are banned from backpacks. The stack upgrade does have a no-stack list in server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems, covering the toolbox, quiver, bundle and every shulker box colour.[5]
Upgrade tuning
- Magnet range is 3 blocks for the basic upgrade (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange) and 5 blocks for the advanced one (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[5]
- Furnace-style upgrades (smelting, smoking, blasting and their auto versions) run at a speed multiplier of 1 and a fuel efficiency multiplier of 1, which matches a vanilla furnace. One example is server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier.[5]
- Tank upgrade capacity is 4,000 mB per row of storage slots (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow). The battery side gets 10,000 FE per row (server.tankUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow).[5]
- The XP pump can mend items (server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true) and uses at most 5 experience points per mending operation (server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending).[5]
- Both void upgrades can void anything, not just overflow: server.voidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled and server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled are true. Be careful with the filters.[5]

Mobs can spawn wearing a backpack with a chance of 0.01 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance). When you kill one, it drops the backpack with a chance of 0.5 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance), plus 0.15 per looting level (server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel). Loot, health buffs, potion effects and armor for these mobs are all switched on. Jukebox playing is off (server.entityBackpackAdditions.playJukebox).[5]
Unverified Options like the on/off toggles and the block and item lists don't show a mod default in the pack data, so it isn't confirmed whether the pack changed any of them from the mod's own defaults.
What changed in Sophisticated Backpacks between versions?

All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Sophisticated Backpacks 3.25.78. The mod has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[1][6]
The pack changelogs only record which mod version was replaced by which. They don't say what changed inside the mod, so this page tracks the version path rather than individual features or fixes.[6][7]
Milestones along the way
- 2.26: the mod moved from 3.22.4 to 3.22.5, the earliest update in the changelogs listed here.[8]

Unverified No changelogs for the shipped Sophisticated Backpacks jars are stored, so the specific features, fixes or balance changes in each version are unverified. The mod's own changelogs would be the place to look, and the sources here do not show them.
