What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide
This pack ships Sophisticated Backpacks version 3.20.16, using the file sophisticatedbackpacks-1.21-3.20.16.1111.jar.[1]
It isn't a recent addition: it was already in the pack in version 0.32 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a good while.[1]
The sources I have for this mod only cover its version and when it joined the pack. I can't confirm anything else about it here, such as recipes, config values or upgrade details, so I've left those out rather than guess.[1]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide
Sophisticated Backpacks is all about the backpack itself plus a long list of upgrades that slot into it. Once you have a backpack, the first few upgrades below are the ones that make the biggest difference early on, and each has its own in-pack recipe, shown right under it.[2][3]
Unverified The sources I was given don't show the recipe for the backpack itself, so I can't tell you how to craft it here. Check the recipe viewer in-game for the backpack items. No quests in this pack involve this mod, so there is no quest path to follow. This site does hold All the Mods 11's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Your first upgrades
Start with the Upgrade Base. It has its own recipe in the pack. I can't confirm from the sources whether the other upgrades use it as an ingredient, so check each recipe below as you go.[2]
Crafting Shaped
| any string | any iron ingot | any string |
| any iron ingot | any leather | any iron ingot |
| any string | any iron ingot | any string |

Next, make the Crafting Upgrade. It puts a crafting table in an upgrade tab, so you can craft without leaving the backpack screen.[2][3]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | Crafting Table | Empty slot |
| any iron ingot | any iron ingot | |
| Empty slot | any chest | Empty slot |

Then add the Feeding Upgrade. It feeds you with food from the backpack's inventory, so you don't have to stop and eat by hand.[2][3]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | Golden Carrot | Empty slot |
| Golden Apple | Glistering Melon Slice | |
| Empty slot | any ender pearl | Empty slot |
Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:feeding_upgrade
The Deposit Upgrade lets you sneak right-click an inventory to deposit items from your backpack into it. That makes it handy for emptying your pack after a trip.[2][3]

| any iron ingot | any iron ingot | |
| any redstone dust | any wooden chest | any redstone dust |

Before you carry anything you'd hate to lose, consider the Everlasting Upgrade. It makes the backpack indestructible, and it can't despawn or fall into the void.[2][3]

Later on
The pack also has stack upgrades in several tiers, from Stack Upgrade Starter Tier up to Stack Upgrade Tier 4, plus conversion recipes between tiers. There are Advanced versions of several upgrades too, such as the Advanced Magnet Upgrade, which magnets items into the backpack at a greater range and has more filtering options. I can't confirm from these sources what the stack upgrades do in numbers, so check the recipe viewer for that.[2][3]
If you also use Sophisticated Storage, the pack has recipes that turn that mod's storage upgrades into their backpack versions. Examples include the Alchemy, Blasting and Compacting upgrades.[2]
How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
9 parts
There are no machines, multiblocks or power systems to set up here. Sophisticated Backpacks is about a portable inventory with upgrade slots, and the real mechanics are the tiers, the upgrade rules and the settings. Everything below comes from the mod's own strings and data files plus the pack's recipe list. The pack has no config files for this mod, so I can only describe what those sources show.[3][4]
Tiers and how you craft them
The backpack tiers are the Backpack, Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack and Netherite Backpack. The basic backpack has its own recipe type. Copper, iron, gold and diamond use a backpack upgrade recipe type. Netherite uses a smithing recipe type.[3][4]

The pack has a second iron backpack recipe that starts from the copper one.
Smithing Backpack Upgrade (sophisticatedbackpacks)
Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:netherite_backpack
Netherite is made through a smithing recipe.
Placing and breaking backpacks
Every tier also exists as a placeable block. When you break one, its loot table drops the matching backpack item and runs a function called copy_backpack_data on it. That function is what carries the backpack's data over to the dropped item.[3][5][6][7][8][9][10]
A backpack with an Infinity Upgrade (Admin) is protected. Only admins can break it or pick it up.[3]
Upgrade slot rules
Upgrades go into the backpack's upgrade slots, and some of them are limited. The mod shows an error message when you break one of these rules:[3]
- Only one Everlasting Upgrade per backpack.[3]
- Only one Tool Swapper Upgrade per backpack.[3]
- Only one Inception Upgrade per backpack, and it only works in a top level backpack, not in one that sits inside another backpack.[3]
- You cannot remove an Inception upgrade while there are backpacks inside the backpack.[3]
- Only one Mob Catcher Upgrade per backpack.[3]
Each upgrade can be switched ON or OFF, and the game tells you with a status message when you toggle it. With Inception, the settings let you choose whether upgrades work with the main backpack's inventory first or with the inventories of the backpacks inside it first.[3]
Upgrade tiers
Many upgrades have an Advanced version, such as Advanced Magnet Upgrade, Advanced Feeding upgrade, Advanced Filter Upgrade and Advanced Compacting Upgrade. In the pack, 22 recipes use the next tier recipe type from Sophisticated Core, and 78 ordinary shaped crafting recipes make items from this mod.[4]

| any gold ingot | any gold ingot | |

The Advanced Magnet Upgrade has a second recipe that starts from the basic upgrade.
Deposit, restock and refill
The mod reports how many stacks it moved. You get a message like stacks deposited to inventory or stacks restocked from inventory. If nothing could move, it says no stacks could be deposited or restocked. The deposit settings include a Match Inventory Contents filter type, and a Match Backpack Contents option also exists.[3]
The Refill upgrade lets you scroll to pick a target slot: any slot, main hand, off hand, or a specific hotbar slot. Advanced Deposit, Advanced Refill and Advanced Restock each have their own settings screen.[3]
The Crafting Upgrade has buttons to refill the crafting grid or not, and to shift click the result into the backpack or into your own inventory.[3]
Tool swapping
The tool swapper has separate options for tools and weapons. Swap Tools puts the right tool in your hand when you hold a weapon or another tool. Only Swap For Other Tools does it only if you already hold a tool, and never swaps for a weapon. Swap Weapon puts a weapon in your hand when you click a tool on an entity. There are also Do Not Swap Tools and Do Not Swap Weapon options. If no tool fits the block or entity, you get a status message saying so.[3]
Capturing mobs
The Mob Catcher Upgrade stores mobs in the backpack, and the mod's messages show its limits:[3][11]
- Hostile mobs, and captured mobs in general, need the Advanced Mob Catcher Upgrade.[3]
- Bosses, players, mobs with inventories and mobs with passengers or vehicles cannot be captured. Some mobs are also blocklisted.[3]
- Only the owner can capture that mob, and a mob needs a free area of empty slots in the backpack. Mobs that are too large for the upgrade are refused.[3]
- You release a captured mob by clicking it, and the release needs a valid space. You must release captured mobs before you can remove the upgrade.[3]
Letting others open your backpack
Backpack Settings has a toggle for whether another player can open your worn backpack. When it is on and the backpack is worn and visible, another player can open it by right clicking your back. When it is off, they cannot, even if the backpack is worn. Settings can be inherited from the player or overridden for a single backpack.[3]
Finding backpacks in the world
The mod injects extra entries into several vanilla chest loot tables, including abandoned mineshafts, bastion treasure, desert pyramids, end city treasure, nether fortresses, shipwreck treasure, simple dungeons and woodland mansions. Most of these entries are rare, because a heavily weighted empty entry sits next to them. The spawn bonus chest adds the basic backpack with weight 100 against an empty weight of 0.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Here is how the backpack tiers work in this pack. The path below follows the recipes and the chest loot the mod adds, since the sources here show no quest tied to the mod.[4]
Backpack tiers
The tiers run in this order: Backpack, Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack and Netherite Backpack. Each one has its own block loot table that uses the mod's copy_backpack_data function, so the backpack's data carries over when the placed block is broken.[5][6][7][8][9][10]
The copper, iron, gold and diamond backpacks are all made with the backpack upgrade recipe type. The netherite backpack uses the smithing backpack upgrade type instead. The pack also has an extra iron recipe, iron_backpack_from_copper.[4]

Stack upgrades
Stack upgrades come in a starter tier and Tiers 1 to 4: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and Stack Upgrade Tier 4. The pack also has conversion items that jump between tiers, for example Stack Upgrade Conversion: Tier 1 to Tier 4.[4]

There are also downgrades, Stack Downgrade Tier 1 to Stack Downgrade Tier 3, each with a crafting recipe.[4]
Advanced upgrades
Many upgrades have an Advanced version, such as Advanced Magnet Upgrade, Advanced Feeding upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade. These use the upgrade next tier recipe type. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade has a second recipe from the basic Magnet Upgrade, shown below. The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade also has an extra recipe added by Sophisticated Storage.[4]

Finding backpacks in chests
You do not have to craft your first backpack. The mod injects loot into several chest types, and most rolls come up empty, so treat these as lucky finds.[12][13][14][15][19]
- Spawn bonus chest: Backpack has weight 100 and the empty entry has weight 0.[19]
- Abandoned mineshaft: the plain, copper, iron and gold backpacks, plus a Magnet Upgrade.[12]
- Desert pyramid: copper, iron and gold backpacks, plus a Magnet Upgrade.[14]
- Bastion treasure: iron and gold backpacks, plus a Feeding Upgrade.[13]
- End city treasure: diamond and gold backpacks, plus an Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[15]
