What is Sophisticated Backpacks?

Sophisticated Backpacks is part of this pack. Version 3.20.9 is included (file sophisticatedbackpacks-1.21-3.20.9.1060.jar), and it has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier.[1]

Unverified The available sources only cover this mod's version and when it joined the pack. Its features, recipes and configs, and any placement in the quest book, are not confirmed here, so they are left out.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?

5 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks is built around upgrades: items that give your backpack extra features, some of which show up as an upgrade tab. In this pack, many of those upgrades are crafted from one shared part, so that's where your first crafting session starts.[2][3]

Start with the Upgrade Base

The Upgrade Base is an ingredient in the recipes for the Pickup, Crafting, Filter and Smelting upgrades, and in the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier and Tier 1. Craft a few of them up front so you aren't stopping later.[2]

Add more room

The Stack Upgrade Starter Tier multiplies the number of stacks that can fit in a slot by 1.5.[2][3]

The bigger stack upgrades come later. Stack Upgrade Tier 1 can be crafted from the starter tier upgrade, so your first stack upgrade isn't wasted. Tier 2 is made from Tier 1, Tier 3 from Tier 2, and Tier 4 from Tier 3.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?

5 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks doesn't have machines or multiblocks. Almost everything a backpack does comes from upgrades that you put into its upgrade tabs. This section covers how those upgrades handle items, fluids and energy, as far as the sources explain them.[3]

Storage upgrades

Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot. There are five tiers: the starter tier gives 1.5x, tier 1 gives 2x, tier 2 gives 4x, tier 3 gives 8x and tier 4 gives 16x.[3]

The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The Battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. Both cost you some regular item space.[3]

  • The Pump upgrade moves fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids get pumped.[3]
  • The XP Pump upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.[3]

Crafting and processing in a tab

Several upgrades put a vanilla station into an upgrade tab, so you can use it from anywhere without placing a block. These are the Crafting Upgrade (crafting table), Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, the Smoking upgrade, the Stonecutter upgrade and the Anvil Upgrade.[3]

The Smelting, Blasting and Smoking upgrades work like their furnace-type counterparts, and the Blasting one is for ores and metal stuff. The auto versions, Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, also pull and push items automatically.[3]

The pack has recipes that turn an Auto-smelting Upgrade into an Auto-smoking Upgrade or an Auto-blasting Upgrade. Here is the Auto-smoking one:[2]

The pack also includes upgrades that add Chipped workstations: the Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. Each puts the matching Chipped table in an upgrade tab.[2][3]

The Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, but only for 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options.[3]

Moving items in and out

The Filter Upgrade filters the items that are piped in and/or out of the backpack, which is how you set up automation around one. The advanced version has more filtering options.[3]

  • Deposit Upgrade: deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click.[3]
  • Restock upgrade: restocks the backpack from a sneak right-clicked inventory.[3]
  • Pickup and Magnet upgrades: the Pickup upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, and the Magnet upgrade pulls items into the backpack from a range. The advanced Magnet upgrade has a greater range.[3]
  • Void upgrade: voids the items selected in its filter.[3]
  • Feeding Upgrade: feeds you food from the backpack's inventory. The advanced version has more options for when food gets fed.[3]
  • Refill upgrade: keeps refilling a stack of selected items in your inventory, and you scroll to change the target slot. The advanced version allows more precise target slot selection and middle-click picking of blocks from the backpack.[3]
  • Tool Swapper upgrade: automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one that is effective on the block or entity when you left-click it. The advanced version has filter options.[3]

Special upgrades

Wearing and sharing a backpack

There is a per-backpack setting for whether other players can open your backpack by right-clicking your back while you wear it. When it is on, the backpack must be worn and visible for this to work. When it is off, others can't open it even if it is worn. The backpack's settings can be inherited from the player or overridden for that one backpack.[3]

Unverified The sources don't say how many upgrade slots each backpack tier has, how many inventory slots a Tank or Battery upgrade takes, how much a tank or battery holds, or what the pack's config values are. No config files for this mod were available for this guide.

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?

5 parts

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Sophisticated Backpacks, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path, so there is no quest-driven progression to follow. The path below comes from the in-pack recipes only.

Unverified The crafting recipes for the backpacks themselves (and their tier-by-tier upgrade path) were not in the recipe data available for this guide, so they are not covered here.

Start with the Upgrade Base

Almost every upgrade in the pack is built on the Upgrade Base, so make a few of these first. It's the common starting point for the whole upgrade tree.[2]

Stack upgrade tiers

The stack upgrades form a clear ladder: Starter Tier, then Tier 1 through Tier 4. Each tier from 2 upward is crafted from the tier right below it, so you climb one rung at a time.[2]

Chains and shortcuts between upgrades

Several upgrades have cheaper conversion recipes if you already own a related upgrade. You can turn a Smelting Upgrade into a Blasting Upgrade or a Smoking Upgrade, and an Auto-smelting Upgrade into an Auto-blasting Upgrade or Auto-smoking Upgrade.[2]

Moving Sophisticated Storage upgrades into backpacks

If you already have matching upgrades from Sophisticated Storage, you can convert them into backpack versions. This works for the advanced upgrades (such as the Advanced Magnet Upgrade and Advanced Filter Upgrade), the auto-smelting family and the Chipped workbench upgrades, so you don't have to rebuild them from scratch.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects with two other mods through recipes: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. No quests are involved here. Everything below comes from in-pack recipes.[2]

Chipped upgrades

Each Chipped workstation has a matching backpack upgrade, so you can carry the station inside your pack. Every one of them is built around the real Chipped block plus an Upgrade Base.[2]

Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage

The pack also has conversion recipes between the upgrades of Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage. That means an upgrade you already own can move between a backpack and a storage block instead of being crafted from scratch.[2]

Going from storage to backpack is covered across the whole upgrade range. That includes the basic and advanced utility upgrades, the smelting-type upgrades, the Chipped upgrades, the Jukebox Upgrade, the Stonecutter Upgrade, and the stack upgrades.[2]

The stack upgrades are numbered differently between the two mods, so the conversion shifts by one tier. Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus converts to Stack Upgrade Starter Tier. Stack Upgrade Tier 2 converts to Stack Upgrade Tier 1. Stack Upgrade Tier 3 converts to Stack Upgrade Tier 2. Stack Upgrade Tier 4 converts to Stack Upgrade Tier 3. Stack Upgrade Tier 5 converts to Stack Upgrade Tier 4.[2]

Tip: Don't match stack upgrades by tier number alone. A Sophisticated Storage Tier 2 stack upgrade converts to a backpack Tier 1, not Tier 2.[2]

Going the other way, from backpack to storage, is covered by recipes for many of the same upgrades, such as the Crafting Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Filter Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade and Pickup Upgrade.[2]

Unverified The recipe data I had shows no backpack-to-storage conversion for the stack upgrades, Stonecutter Upgrade, Void Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade or Smoking Upgrade. It is unconfirmed whether those have a return recipe, so check in-game before relying on it.
