What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
This pack ships Sophisticated Backpacks version 3.20.9 (file sophisticatedbackpacks-1.21-3.20.9.1060.jar). It has been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier, so if you've played an older version of the pack, the mod was most likely already there.[1]
The sources I have for this guide only cover the mod's version and when it first appeared in the pack. Anything beyond that, such as what the backpacks can do in this pack, is not covered here.[1]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide
Sophisticated Backpacks is built around upgrades, and most of the upgrade recipes in this pack start from the same base part. That's where you begin. Here are the first things to make, in the order I'd do them.[2]
Make an Upgrade Base
The Upgrade Base is an ingredient in most of the upgrades below, including the Crafting, Pickup, Smelting, Filter and Stack Starter upgrades. Make a few before you do anything else.[2]

Grab a Stack Upgrade first
The Stack Upgrade Starter Tier multiplies the number of stacks that can fit in a slot by 1.5, which gives you more room.[2][3]

The Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items. The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack.[2][3]

Smelting on the go
The Smelting Upgrade gives you smelting in an upgrade tab. It's also the starting point for other upgrades: there are dedicated recipes that turn it into the Blasting Upgrade or the Smoking Upgrade.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
6 parts
A Sophisticated Backpacks backpack is more than extra storage. Most of its depth comes from upgrades that sit in the backpack's upgrade tabs, and each one adds a machine, an automation behavior or a storage change. Here's how those systems work, based on what the mod's own tooltips say.[3]
Machines in an upgrade tab
Several upgrades put a whole station inside your backpack. The Crafting Upgrade and the Anvil Upgrade each bring their station into an upgrade tab, and the stonecutter upgrade does the same. Here is how they are made in this pack:[3][4]

If the Chipped mod is in your world, the pack also has Chipped upgrades: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. Each puts the matching Chipped workstation in a tab.[3][4]
The smelting family has three furnace-style tabs: Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade for ores and metal stuff, and a smoking upgrade for food. Each also has an automatic version (Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade, Auto-smoking Upgrade). The tooltips say these automatically pull and push items, so you don't have to shuffle things in and out by hand.[3][4]
You can upgrade between the manual and automatic tiers directly. In this pack, the Blasting Upgrade can be made from a Smelting Upgrade like this:[4]

The auto-smoking version can be made from the auto-smelting one:[4]

Moving and sorting items
- The Filter Upgrade filters items that are piped in and/or out of the backpack. The advanced version has more filtering options.[3][4]
- The pickup upgrade makes the backpack pick up items. The magnet upgrade pulls items into the backpack from range, and the advanced magnet does it from a greater range.[3]
- The Deposit Upgrade deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click. The restock upgrade works the other way and restocks the backpack from a sneak right-clicked inventory.[3][4]
- The Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The advanced compacting upgrade handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options.[3][4]
- The void upgrade voids the items you select in its filter.[3]
Taking care of you
- The Feeding Upgrade feeds you with food from the backpack's inventory. The advanced version adds more options for when food gets fed.[3][4]
- The refill upgrade keeps refilling a stack of selected items in your inventory. The advanced version allows more precise target slot selection and lets you middle-click to pick blocks from the backpack.[3]
- The tool swapper upgrade automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one that's effective on the block or entity you left-click. The advanced version adds filter options.[3]
Fluids, energy and experience
The tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. That means you trade item slots for fluid or energy capacity.[3]
The pump upgrade pumps fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids get pumped. The XP pump upgrade pumps experience between the Tank upgrade and you.[3]
Capacity
Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot. The tooltips list the starter tier at 1.5 times, then tier 1 at 2, tier 2 at 4, tier 3 at 8 and tier 4 at 16.[3]
Protection and nesting
- The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void.[3][4]
- The Inception Upgrade lets you put backpacks inside the backpack.[3][4]
- In the backpack settings, a toggle controls whether another player can open your worn, visible backpack by right-clicking your back. When it's off, they can't, even if the backpack is worn.[3]
Unverified No config files for this mod are available for the pack, so the base slot counts, upgrade slot counts per backpack tier and any changed values can't be confirmed. The multipliers above come from the mod's tooltips, and I couldn't check them against a pack config.
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide
Progression with Sophisticated Backpacks in this pack is about upgrades. You build the Upgrade Base first, then stack more specialised upgrades on top of it, and every upgrade here is a normal crafting-table recipe.[2]
Unverified No quests in this pack involve this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path, so there is no quest-guided order. The order below follows the recipes themselves. The recipes for the backpacks themselves (the backpack tiers) were not in the recipe data I had, so I can't confirm how they are crafted here.
Step 1: the Upgrade Base
Nearly every upgrade in this pack starts from the Upgrade Base. Make a few before anything else.[2]

Step 2: the Stack Upgrade ladder
The stack upgrades form a clear ladder: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, then Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and finally Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Tiers 2, 3 and 4 are each crafted from the tier before. I can't confirm the multiplier each tier gives in this pack, so check the in-game tooltips.[2]

Step 3: utility upgrades
Once you have bases to spare, pick the utility upgrades that fit your play style. Good early picks are the Crafting Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade, Filter Upgrade and Smelting Upgrade.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide
In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects with two other mods that the recipes make visible: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. No quests are tied to these links, so everything here comes from the pack's crafting recipes.[2]
Chipped workbench upgrades
Each Chipped workstation has its own backpack upgrade. That means you can carry the crafting station with you and open it from the backpack. Each upgrade is crafted around the matching Chipped block.[2]
- Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade is made from the Alchemy Bench.[2]
- Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade is made from the Botanist Workbench.[2]
- Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade is made from the Carpenters Table.[2]
- Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade is made from the Glassblower.[2]
- Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade is made from the Loom Table.[2]
- Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade is made from the Mason Table.[2]
- Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade is made from the Tinkering Table.[2]
All seven follow the same pattern. Here is the Glassblower one as an example:[2]

Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
Sophisticated Storage has its own upgrades with matching names, and the pack gives you shaped crafting recipes to convert them. You can turn a Storage upgrade into the backpack version, so an upgrade you already own is not wasted when you want it on your back instead of on a chest.[2]
The backpack-from-storage conversions cover a wide range of upgrades, including the Chipped ones. The list includes Magnet Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade, Filter Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, Compacting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade and Void Upgrade. The advanced and auto versions of these are covered as well.[2]

Storage Magnet Upgrade into the backpack version.
The stack upgrades convert too, but the tier names don't line up one to one. Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes Stack Upgrade Starter Tier. After that, Storage tier 2 becomes backpack tier 1, tier 3 becomes tier 2, tier 4 becomes tier 3, and tier 5 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Check the tier name on the item before you convert it.[2]

Conversion also works in the other direction for many upgrades. For example, Magnet Upgrade can be turned into Magnet Upgrade with a shaped recipe that uses planks. The recipes I could confirm for this direction cover the advanced upgrades, the auto-blasting, auto-smelting and auto-smoking upgrades, the blasting upgrade, the Chipped upgrades, and the compacting, crafting, feeding, filter, jukebox, magnet and pickup upgrades.[2]

Unverified I could not confirm a backpack-to-storage conversion recipe for the smelting, smoking, stonecutter, void or stack upgrades. If you need one, check the recipe viewer in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
