What is Sophisticated Backpacks?

Sophisticated Backpacks is part of the pack at version 3.20.9 (the 0.42 release ships the file sophisticatedbackpacks-1.21-3.20.9.1060.jar). It has been included since 0.32 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]

Unverified What the backpacks do in this pack, whether the pack changes any of the mod's recipes or configs, and where the quest book places the mod are not covered by the sources available for this guide.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?

5 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks is all about upgrades. Almost every upgrade in this pack starts from one shared crafting component, so that is the first thing you should make.[2]

Step 1: Make an Upgrade Base

The Upgrade Base is the building block for nearly every upgrade. Make a few of them before you start, because you will use one for each upgrade you craft.[2]

Step 2: Get more room

The Stack Upgrade Starter Tier is the first stack upgrade, and Tier 1 has a recipe that builds on it. Its tooltip says it multiplies the number of stacks that fit in a slot by 1.5.[2][3]

Higher tiers go up to Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Each step builds on the one before it, so you can grow your storage as you progress.[2]

Step 3: Quality-of-life upgrades

Once you have room, pick up a few upgrades that save you trips. The Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, so loot goes straight in.[2][3]

The Smelting Upgrade puts a furnace in an upgrade tab. There are also blasting and smoking versions, and the pack has recipes to turn a smelting upgrade into either of them.[2][3]

Step 4: Control what goes in

When your pickup upgrade grabs too much junk, the Filter Upgrade helps. Its tooltip says it filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack.[2][3]

Tip: If you already have an upgrade from Sophisticated Storage, check the recipe viewer. The pack has recipes that convert some of those storage upgrades into their backpack versions, for example the crafting, compacting and blasting upgrades.[2]

Later on

The Feeding Upgrade feeds you from the backpack's inventory, and the Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The Inception Upgrade lets you put backpacks inside a backpack. These are worth working towards once the basics are done.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?

6 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks is built around upgrades. Every system in the mod, from smelting to fluid pumping, is an upgrade that sits in an upgrade tab on your backpack. That makes the backpack work like a small set of machines you carry around. The tooltips below come from the mod's own descriptions, so this section covers what each upgrade is for, not detailed internals.[3]

Stack upgrades

Stack upgrades make the backpack hold more. Each one multiplies the number of stacks that fit in a slot. Starter Tier multiplies by 1.5 and Tier 1 by 2. Tiers 2, 3 and 4 multiply by 4, 8 and 16.[3]

In this pack, Stack Upgrade Starter Tier and Stack Upgrade Tier 1 have the crafting recipes shown below. You can also upgrade Starter Tier directly into Tier 1.[2][3]

Processing upgrades

The Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade put a furnace-style machine in an upgrade tab. The blasting one handles ores and metal stuff, and the smoking one handles food.[3]

The auto versions (Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade) do the same job but automatically pull and push items. That means the backpack feeds the machine and collects the output without you shuffling items by hand.[3]

The pack has conversion recipes between the variants, so you can turn one processing upgrade into another without starting from scratch.[2]

Crafting-station upgrades

The Crafting Upgrade is a crafting table in an upgrade tab, and the Anvil Upgrade is an anvil in one. The mod also describes a stonecutter upgrade and several Chipped workbench upgrades that work the same way.[3]

Item handling and automation

Several upgrades move items for you. The Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, and the magnet upgrade does the same at range. The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack, which is what you use when hooking it up to external automation.[3]

  • Deposit Upgrade: deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click.[3]
  • Restock Upgrade: the reverse. It restocks the backpack from an inventory you sneak right-click.[3]
  • Refill Upgrade: keeps refilling the stack of selected items in your inventory. You scroll to change the target slot.[3]
  • Feeding Upgrade: feeds you food from the backpack's inventory.[3]
  • Compacting Upgrade: compacts items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes.[3]
  • Void upgrade: voids the items you select in its filter.[3]
  • Tool swapper upgrade: automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one that is effective on the block or entity you left-click.[3]

Advanced versions of the filtering upgrades add more filtering options. The advanced compacting upgrade also handles 3x3 recipes, and the advanced refill upgrade allows more precise target slot selection and middle-click picking of blocks from the backpack.[3]

Fluids, experience and energy

The tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The pump upgrade moves fluids between that tank and adjacent blocks. The advanced pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP pump upgrade moves experience between the tank and the player.[3]

The battery upgrade works the same way for power: it replaces part of the backpack's inventory with energy storage.[3]

Protection and nesting

The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The Inception Upgrade lets you put backpacks inside the backpack.[3]

There is also a setting for whether another player can open your backpack by right-clicking your back while you wear it. When it's on and the backpack is visible, they can open it. When it's off, they can't, even if the backpack is worn. Backpack settings can be inherited from the player or overridden for a single backpack.[3]

Unverified Capacities for the tank and battery upgrades, the exact slot cost of each upgrade, and whether the pack changes any mod defaults are not confirmed by the available sources. Recipes for the tank, battery, pump, magnet, void, tool swapper and advanced upgrades were also not visible in the recipe data.

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?

3 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks has no quest line in this pack, so progression here follows the recipes. Everything starts with the Upgrade Base, because almost every basic upgrade is built on top of it. Make it early and you can start customizing your backpack right away.[2]

Stack upgrades: the main tier ladder

The clearest tier path in the pack is the stack upgrade line: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, then Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and finally Stack Upgrade Tier 4. From Tier 2 upward, each one builds on the tier before it, so you climb the ladder one step at a time.[2]

Feature upgrade chains

Several upgrades have shortcut recipes that start from another upgrade. The Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade can each be made from a Smelting Upgrade, and the Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade can each be made from an Auto-smelting Upgrade. If you already have the smelting version, these are the cheaper route.[2]

Converting from Sophisticated Storage

If you already have upgrades from Sophisticated Storage, the pack has conversion recipes that turn them into the backpack versions. This covers the advanced upgrades such as the Advanced Magnet Upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade, and the stack upgrades too. The tier numbers shift, though: a Storage Stack Upgrade Tier 2 converts into backpack Tier 1, and Storage Tier 5 converts into backpack Tier 4. The Storage Tier 1 Plus converts into the Starter Tier.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?

2 parts

The only cross-mod connection I can confirm for Sophisticated Backpacks in this pack is with Sophisticated Storage. The pack has crafting recipes that convert upgrades between the two mods in both directions, so an upgrade you've already built doesn't have to be wasted.[2]

Swapping upgrades between backpacks and storage

Every Backpacks upgrade I found in the recipe dump has a matching Storage version, and each pair can be converted either way with a shaped crafting recipe. This covers the everyday upgrades like Magnet Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade and Crafting Upgrade. It also covers the filter, void, compacting and stonecutter upgrades, the jukebox upgrade, and the smelting, smoking and blasting families including their auto versions.[2]

The advanced versions convert too, for example Advanced Magnet Upgrade, Advanced Filter Upgrade and Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]

Here is the conversion from a Storage upgrade into a Backpacks one, using the Magnet Upgrade as the example:[2]

Stack upgrades: the tier names don't match

Stack upgrades are convertible as well, but the two mods name their tiers differently. The pack pairs them like this:[2]

Tip: After the starter tier, a Backpacks stack upgrade converts to the Storage tier one number higher. Check the pairing before you craft, so you end up with the tier you expect.[2]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Sophisticated Backpacks, and I found no recipes linking it to any mod other than Sophisticated Storage. Other integrations may exist, but they are unconfirmed.
