What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
Sophisticated Backpacks is part of the pack's mod list, and version 0.51 ships with Sophisticated Backpacks 3.20.9 (the jar is sophisticatedbackpacks-1.21-3.20.9.1060). It isn't a recent addition either: the pack's records show it was first included in version 0.32 or earlier.[1]
That's all I can confirm about the mod from the pack's own files, so I'm keeping this overview short. I don't have a verified description of its features, and I can't tell you where it sits in the quest book, so I'm leaving both out rather than guessing.[1]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide
Sophisticated Backpacks is built around upgrades, and most of the upgrade recipes in this pack start from the same base part. That's where you begin. Here are the first things to make, in the order I'd do them.[2]
Make an Upgrade Base
The Upgrade Base is an ingredient in most of the upgrades below, including the Crafting, Pickup, Smelting, Filter and Stack Starter upgrades. Make a few before you do anything else.[2]

Grab a Stack Upgrade first
The Stack Upgrade Starter Tier multiplies the number of stacks that can fit in a slot by 1.5, which gives you more room.[2][3]

Smelting on the go
The Smelting Upgrade gives you smelting in an upgrade tab. It's also the starting point for other upgrades: there are dedicated recipes that turn it into the Blasting Upgrade or the Smoking Upgrade.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
7 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks has no machines, multiblocks or power grid to build. Everything the backpack does comes from upgrades that sit in its upgrade tabs, so this section walks through what the upgrades do and how this pack has them configured.[3]
Moving and filtering items
The Filter Upgrade filters items that are piped in and/or out of the backpack, which is how you control hoppers and pipes touching it. The Advanced Filter Upgrade adds more filtering options. In this pack it has 16 filter slots, shown 4 to a row.[3][4]
The Deposit Upgrade deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click. The restock upgrade works the other way and restocks the backpack from a sneak right-clicked inventory. Both have advanced versions with more filtering options. Advanced Deposit and Advanced Restock each have 16 filter slots here.[3][4]
- Pickup upgrades make the backpack pick up items. Magnet upgrades pull items in from range. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade has a range of 5 blocks in this pack (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange, adjustable from 1 to 20) and 16 filter slots.[3][4]
- Void upgrades void the items you select in the filter. server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled is true in this pack. That setting decides whether the void upgrade can void anything or only has the overflow option.[3][4]
- The Feeding Upgrade feeds you food from the backpack's inventory. The advanced version gives more options for when food gets fed.[3]
- Refill upgrades keep refilling the stack of selected items in your inventory. Scroll to change the target slot. The advanced version allows more precise target slot selection and also lets you middle-click pick blocks from the backpack. It has 12 filter slots here.[3][4]
- Tool Swapper upgrades automatically swap the item in your hand for the one that is effective on the block or entity you left-click.[3]
Compacting
The Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The Advanced Compacting Upgrade handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options. In this pack the basic one has 9 filter slots (3 per row) and the advanced one has 16 (4 per row).[3][4]
Smelting, blasting and smoking
The Smelting Upgrade and Blasting Upgrade put a furnace and a blast furnace in an upgrade tab. The smoker version does the same for smoking food. The auto versions, Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, also automatically pull and push items.[3]
In this pack, the smelting speed multiplier and fuel efficiency multiplier are both 1 for the auto-smelting, auto-blasting and auto-smoking upgrades, and for the blasting upgrade. A value of 1 matches the speed of a vanilla furnace, and the allowed range is 0.25 to 4.0. Each auto upgrade has 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots, shown 4 to a row.[4]
The auto upgrades can be crafted from the plain auto-smelting upgrade, so you only need one base to branch from.[5]

Fluids, energy and experience
The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The Battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. Because both take over inventory space, expect to give up some slots for them.[3]
The Pump upgrade moves fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The Advanced Pump Upgrade works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.[3]
Workstation upgrades
Several upgrades put a block's interface in an upgrade tab. They include the Crafting Upgrade (crafting table), the Anvil Upgrade (anvil), the Stonecutter upgrade and the Jukebox Upgrade. There are also Chipped versions, such as Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[3][5]

Crafting Upgrade
Capacity, nesting and protection
- Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot. The tiers give x1.5 (starter), x2, x4, x8 and x16.[3]
- The Copper Backpack has 45 inventory slots in this pack (server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount).[4]
- The Inception Upgrade makes it possible to put backpacks inside the backpack.[3]
- server.canBePlacedInContainerItems is false in this pack. That option controls whether backpacks can be placed in container items.[4]
- The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void.[3]
Opening other players' backpacks
In this pack, server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true. Another player can right-click your back to open a backpack you are wearing and showing. Each backpack has a setting to turn this off, so you can block it per backpack. If the server turns the option off, it is disabled for everyone and the related settings are removed from the backpack.[3][4]
Unverified The server config has 70 more options that were not available to me, and the full recipe list was also cut off. Values for the basic magnet, pickup and pump upgrades, and the tank and battery capacities, are therefore unconfirmed for this pack.
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide
Progression with Sophisticated Backpacks in this pack is about upgrades. You build the Upgrade Base first, then stack more specialised upgrades on top of it, and every upgrade here is a normal crafting-table recipe.[2]
Unverified No quests in this pack involve this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path, so there is no quest-guided order. The order below follows the recipes themselves. The recipes for the backpacks themselves (the backpack tiers) were not in the recipe data I had, so I can't confirm how they are crafted here.
Step 1: the Upgrade Base
Nearly every upgrade in this pack starts from the Upgrade Base. Make a few before anything else.[2]

Step 2: the Stack Upgrade ladder
The stack upgrades form a clear ladder: Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, then Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 2, Stack Upgrade Tier 3 and finally Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Tiers 2, 3 and 4 are each crafted from the tier before. I can't confirm the multiplier each tier gives in this pack, so check the in-game tooltips.[2]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide
In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects with two other mods that the recipes make visible: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. No quests are tied to these links, so everything here comes from the pack's crafting recipes.[2]
Chipped workbench upgrades
Each Chipped workstation has its own backpack upgrade. That means you can carry the crafting station with you and open it from the backpack. Each upgrade is crafted around the matching Chipped block.[2]
- Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade is made from the Alchemy Bench.[2]
- Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade is made from the Botanist Workbench.[2]
- Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade is made from the Carpenters Table.[2]
- Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade is made from the Glassblower.[2]
- Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade is made from the Loom Table.[2]
- Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade is made from the Mason Table.[2]
- Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade is made from the Tinkering Table.[2]
All seven follow the same pattern. Here is the Glassblower one as an example:[2]

Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
Sophisticated Storage has its own upgrades with matching names, and the pack gives you shaped crafting recipes to convert them. You can turn a Storage upgrade into the backpack version, so an upgrade you already own is not wasted when you want it on your back instead of on a chest.[2]
The backpack-from-storage conversions cover a wide range of upgrades, including the Chipped ones. The list includes Magnet Upgrade, Pickup Upgrade, Filter Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, Compacting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade and Void Upgrade. The advanced and auto versions of these are covered as well.[2]

Storage Magnet Upgrade into the backpack version.
The stack upgrades convert too, but the tier names don't line up one to one. Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes Stack Upgrade Starter Tier. After that, Storage tier 2 becomes backpack tier 1, tier 3 becomes tier 2, tier 4 becomes tier 3, and tier 5 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Check the tier name on the item before you convert it.[2]

Conversion also works in the other direction for many upgrades. For example, Magnet Upgrade can be turned into Magnet Upgrade with a shaped recipe that uses planks. The recipes I could confirm for this direction cover the advanced upgrades, the auto-blasting, auto-smelting and auto-smoking upgrades, the blasting upgrade, the Chipped upgrades, and the compacting, crafting, feeding, filter, jukebox, magnet and pickup upgrades.[2]

Unverified I could not confirm a backpack-to-storage conversion recipe for the smelting, smoking, stonecutter, void or stack upgrades. If you need one, check the recipe viewer in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
6 parts
Here are the Sophisticated Backpacks settings you're most likely to care about, exactly as this pack sets them. One honest caveat: the config files I have show this pack's values but not the mod's own defaults, so I can't tell you which of these the pack changed.[4][6]
Backpack sizes
Each backpack tier has its own inventory size and upgrade slot count. In this pack they are:[4]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.leatherBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.leatherBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot (server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.copperBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots (server.ironBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.ironBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots (server.goldBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.goldBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots (server.diamondBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.diamondBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots and 7 upgrade slots (server.netheriteBackpack.inventorySlotCount, server.netheriteBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[4]
Upgrade limits
server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of a given upgrade a single backpack can hold. This pack allows 3 stack upgrades, 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 of the furnace upgrades group per backpack, so plan your upgrade slots around that.[4]
Magnets, filters and voiding
The basic magnet pulls items from 3 blocks around you (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange), and the advanced magnet reaches 5 blocks (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[4]
Filter sizes follow a pattern. Most basic upgrades, such as the pickup and void upgrades, have 9 filter slots, and most advanced ones have 16. The exceptions are the refill upgrade with 6 (server.refillUpgrade.filterSlots), the advanced refill upgrade with 12 (server.advancedRefillUpgrade.filterSlots) and the tool swapper with 8 (server.toolSwapperUpgrade.filterSlots).[4]
The void upgrades can void anything, not just overflow, because server.voidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled and server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled are both true. Set your filters carefully.[4]
Cooking, tank and XP upgrades
Every smelting, smoking, blasting and auto-cooking upgrade has its speed and fuel efficiency multipliers set to 1, which the config describes as the vanilla furnace rate. For example, see server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier.[4]
The tank upgrade holds 4,000 mB per row of storage slots (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow), and the battery side holds 10,000 FE per row (server.tankUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow). The XP pump can mend items (server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true), using at most 5 experience points per operation.[4]
Carrying lots of backpacks
The slowness penalty for carrying too many backpacks is off in this pack (server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false), so the limit of 3 in server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks has no effect unless someone turns it on. Active upgrades like magnets and pickup also work in any backpack in your inventory, not only the worn one, because server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false.[4]
Backpacks in the world
Backpack loot is added to vanilla chests (common.chestLootEnabled is true). Mobs can also spawn wearing one with a 0.01 chance (server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance), and a mob wearing one drops it 0.5 of the time when a player kills it (server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance). Each looting level adds 0.15 to that chance (server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel). Fake players don't get the drop (server.entityBackpackAdditions.dropToFakePlayers is false).[4][6]
Unverified Which of these values differ from the Sophisticated Backpacks defaults is unverified. The available sources list only this pack's settings, with no default values to compare against.
