Sophisticated Storage in All the Mods 10

Sophisticated Storage adds upgradeable chests and barrels, plus tools to tie them together into one big storage setup. This pack includes version 1.5.91 of the mod. It's for you if you're tired of chests everywhere and want storage that grows with your progress.^[1][2]

Where it fits in progression

The pack's Basic Storage quest chapter walks you through the tiers in order. Start with the Copper Chest ("Copper Chest" quest). It's optional: you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron. Then move up through the Iron Chest, Gold Chest and Diamond Chest to the Netherite Chest, which the quest calls the biggest chest in the mod. Each tier also has a barrel version, and the quests accept either one.^[2]

Linking storages together

The Storage Controller lets you treat several storages as one big multiblock. It also acts as the in/out point for everything attached to it, so you can combine it with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Place storages next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, and they join the network. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions.^[2]

If you'd rather not build everything touching, use the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click each storage to link it. The wireless range is the same 14 blocks. The Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller, again within 14 blocks.^[2]

Upgrades

Upgrades start from the Upgrade Base. The quest book points you to the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades and says the Sophisticated Storage versions function about the same, though you need to craft the storage equivalents.^[2]

Sophisticated Storage is all about starting with a simple chest or barrel and growing it into a proper storage network. Here is the order to tackle things in this pack, which follows the Basic Storage chapter of the quest book.^[2]

Tier up your chest or barrel

Chests and barrels get better in tiers. In this pack, a tier upgrade combines the lower-tier storage with the next material, and the pack has changed these recipes from the mod's defaults. The quest "Copper Chest" quest points you at the Copper Chest first, but you do not need it on the way to iron. It is only a way to save some iron.^[2][3]

The first real goal is the Iron Chest, covered by the quest "Iron Chest" quest. The barrel versions work the same way, and the quest accepts either the chest or the barrel.^[2][3]

Make the Upgrade Base

Before you start adding features to your storage, craft the Upgrade Base. The quest a quest in "Basic Storage" calls it the base for upgrades, and says the Sophisticated Storage upgrades function about the same as the Sophisticated Backpack ones, so you can use those as a reference.^[2]

Build a Storage Controller

Once you have a few storages, the Storage Controller lets you work with them as one big multiblock. Place storages next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, and they join the network. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. Keep upgrading

The quest chain continues from iron to the Gold Chest ("Gold Chest" quest), then the Diamond Chest ("Diamond Chest" quest), and finally the Netherite Chest ("Netherite Chest" quest), which the quest calls the biggest of the chests. Each step upgrades the previous tier, and the barrels follow the same ladder.^[2][3]

Sophisticated Storage is more than bigger chests. In this pack your storage can link into a multiblock, take piped input and output through dedicated blocks, and run machine-like jobs (smelting, pumping, crafting) from upgrade tabs. This page covers what the sources explain about how those systems behave.^[4]

Storage multiblocks

Several storage blocks can be joined into one multiblock. The Storage Connector bridges gaps between storage blocks in that multiblock, so you can keep a layout together even when the blocks do not touch.^[4]

The Controller is the hub. It lets you deposit items into a connected multiblock and pipe items to and from it. If you have separate multiblocks, a Storage Link connects them to a controller, and you use the Storage Tool to make that link. The Storage Tool also links, locks, and hides counts, tiers, locks and overlays on storages.^[4]

Connectors come in wood variants. The pack changes their recipe, and the acacia one is shown below. A bamboo version also exists.^[3][4]

Piping items in and out

Three blocks decide how a multiblock talks to pipes and automation. Storage Input only lets items be piped in, and its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact. Storage Output only lets items be piped out. Storage I/O does both.^[3][4]

You can swap between the three by crafting one into the next. The pack changes these conversion recipes, which form a loop: I/O to Input, Input to Output, Output to I/O.^[3]

Upgrades that move items

The basic Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade moves items between the storage and adjacent blocks, faster, with configurable input and output from any side.^[4]

In this pack the Advanced Hopper keeps the mod defaults. Ticks between transfers: server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks is 2. Maximum stack size per transfer: server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize is 4. Input filter slots: server.advancedHopperUpgrade.inputFilterSlots is 4. Output filter slots: server.advancedHopperUpgrade.outputFilterSlots is 4.^[5]

Filter Upgrades control what gets piped in and/or out of the storage, and the advanced version has more filtering options. The Void Upgrade destroys the items selected in its filter. In this pack server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled is true, so the advanced void upgrade can void at all times instead of only offering overflow options.^[4][5]

The advanced filter upgrade has server.advancedFilterUpgrade.filterSlots set to 16 in this pack, which matches the mod default.^[5]

The Magnet Upgrade pulls items into storage from range, and the Pickup Upgrade makes the storage pick items up. The advanced magnet reaches server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange = 5 blocks around the storage here, which matches the mod default.^[4][5]

Smelting in an upgrade tab

Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade give the storage a furnace-style tab that automatically pulls and pushes items. Smelting handles general recipes, blasting handles ores and metal stuff, and smoking handles food. The non-auto versions give the same tab without the automatic pulling and pushing.^[3][4]

The pack leaves speed at vanilla furnace pace. server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier is 1, and so are the matching options for blasting (server.autoBlastingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier) and smoking (server.autoSmokingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier). A value of 1.0 equals a vanilla furnace, and the allowed range is 0.25 to 4.0.^[5]

Fuel use is vanilla pace too: server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier is 1, with the same value for the auto-blasting and auto-smoking upgrades.^[5]

On the auto-smelting upgrade, server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.inputFilterSlots is 8 and server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelFilterSlots is 4. The auto-blasting and auto-smoking upgrades use the same values.^[5]

The pack changes the blasting and smoking recipes so that both are made from the auto-smelting upgrade.^[3]

Fluids and experience

Fluid handling goes through the Tank upgrade. The Pump Upgrade pumps fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The Advanced Pump Upgrade also works with fluid containers in hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.^[4]

Other automatic upgrades

Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. The advanced version adds effect filtering options. The pack changes the basic recipe.^[3][4]

Sophisticated Storage ties into a few other mods in this pack. The strongest link is Sophisticated Backpacks, because upgrades from the two mods can be converted into each other. Chipped and the Sawmill mod each feed into workstation upgrades, and the Storage Controller is meant to plug into storage-network mods.^[2][3]

Chipped workstation upgrades

Chipped adds a storage upgrade for each of its workstations: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. Storage networks with Applied Energistics and Integrated Dynamics

The pack's quest for the Storage Controller says it lets several storages act like one big multiblock. It also says this can be combined with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics, because the Storage Controller acts as an in/out point for every storage attached to it. See a quest in "Basic Storage".^[2]

Storages connect by sitting next to the controller or next to a storage that is already connected, up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. For wireless setups, the Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller, and the Storage Tool binds a controller to storages without placing them next to it. Both keep the same 14-block range.^[2]

Everything for this mod in the pack's quest book sits in one chapter, Basic Storage. Every quest in it unlocks after a quest called Sophisticated Storage, so that's your entry point. The chapter has two branches: a chest-tier ladder and a Storage Controller line.^[2]

The chest ladder

The ladder is a straight line, and each quest accepts either the chest or the matching barrel. Submit whichever you've built.^[2]

1. "Copper Chest" quest asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says you can skip it on the way to an Iron Chest, but using it can save you some iron.^[2]
2. "Iron Chest" quest asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. It unlocks after Sophisticated Storage and the Copper Chest quest.^[2]
3. "Gold Chest" quest asks for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel, and it comes after the Iron Chest quest.^[2]
4. "Diamond Chest" quest asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel, and it comes after the Gold Chest quest.^[2]
5. "Netherite Chest" quest asks for a Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest chest from Sophisticated Storage, and it comes after the Diamond Chest quest.^[2]

Controller, tool and link

a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Controller. The quest text explains that it lets you treat multiple storages as one big multiblock. It also says the controller works as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Storages placed next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, join the network, up to 14 blocks away in all directions.^[2]

a quest in "Basic Storage" comes after the Controller quest and asks for the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click storages to link them wirelessly. The range is the same 14 blocks.^[2]

a quest in "Basic Storage" needs both the Controller quest and the Storage Tool quest first. It asks for the Storage Link, which connects storages that aren't attached to a controller or to blocks connected to it. You get a wireless multiblock without right-clicking each storage, and the 14-block range still applies.^[2]

Upgrades

a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. To keep the chapter from filling up with upgrade quests, the text points you to the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades. You'll need to craft the Sophisticated Storage versions, but the text says they work about the same.^[2]

Good news first: for every setting where the pack file reports a mod default, the pack's value matches that default. The numbers below are what you get in this pack, but none of the slot counts, ranges or speeds were changed from the mod's own values. These all live in the server config, so they apply per world and can be edited if you run your own server.^[5]

Storage size and upgrade slots

Each material tier has its own inventory and upgrade slot count, set separately for chests, barrels and shulker boxes. Wood chests and barrels have 27 slots and 1 upgrade slot, and the Shulker Box also has 27 slots and 1 upgrade slot. Here is how the metal tiers are set, using the chest options as the example:^[5]

• Copper: 45 inventory slots (server.CopperChest.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.CopperChest.upgradeSlotCount).^[5]
• Iron: 54 inventory slots (server.IronChest.inventorySlotCount) and 2 upgrade slots (server.IronChest.upgradeSlotCount).^[5]
• Gold: 81 inventory slots (server.GoldChest.inventorySlotCount) and 3 upgrade slots (server.GoldChest.upgradeSlotCount).^[5]
• Diamond: 108 inventory slots (server.DiamondChest.inventorySlotCount) and 4 upgrade slots (server.DiamondChest.upgradeSlotCount).^[5]
• Netherite: 132 inventory slots (server.NetheriteChest.inventorySlotCount) and 5 upgrade slots (server.NetheriteChest.upgradeSlotCount).^[5]

Limited barrels use a base slot limit multiplier instead. For example, Limited Barrel I is set to 32 (server.LimitedBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier) and Limited Netherite Barrel I to 160 (server.LimitedNetheriteBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier). Both are the mod defaults.^[5]

Upgrade limits

server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrades one storage can hold. Barrels, chests and shulker boxes are each limited to 2 stack upgrades, 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 furnace upgrade. Limited barrels get no stack upgrade entry, only 1 jukebox and 1 furnace upgrade. The file doesn't list a mod default for this option, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed it.^[5]

Upgrade behavior

• Magnet range is 3 blocks for the basic upgrade (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange) and 5 blocks for the advanced one (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).^[5]
• The basic hopper upgrade moves items every 8 ticks, 1 stack size at a time (server.hopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks, server.hopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize). The advanced one transfers every 2 ticks, up to 4 at a time (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks, server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize).^[5]
• Smelting speed and fuel efficiency multipliers for the smelting, smoking and blasting upgrades (and their auto versions) are all 1, which matches a vanilla furnace. One example is server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier.^[5]
• The void upgrade can always void items, not just overflow, because server.voidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled is true. The advanced void upgrade is set the same way.^[5]
• The XP pump can mend items (server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true) and uses at most 5 XP points per operation (server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending).^[5]
• The pump upgrade has a base transfer of 20 mB per operation (server.pumpUpgrade.maxInputOutput). That base gets multiplied by the number of rows in the storage and the stack multiplier.^[5]

Controller, drops and shulker rules

• The storage controller connects storage blocks within 15 blocks (server.controllerRange).^[5]
• If breaking a chest or barrel would drop more than 200 item entities (server.tooManyItemEntityDrops), the break is cancelled unless you hold shift, and a message suggests using packing tape.^[5]
• Shulker boxes accept container items, because server.shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.containerItemsDisallowed is false. The server.shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.disallowedItems list is empty.^[5]
• Stack upgrades won't stack certain items: the Immersive Engineering toolbox, the Supplementaries quiver, bundles and every colour of shulker box (server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems).^[5]
• Limited barrel counts can be dyed to change their color, since server.limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled is true.^[5]

The compression upgrade uses up to 5 slots (server.compressionUpgrade.maxNumberOfSlots). It also has an extra decompression list (server.compressionUpgrade.additionalDecompressibleItems) that covers items such as glowstone, quartz blocks, clay, bricks, melons and packed ice.^[5]

All the Mods 10 8.1 ships Sophisticated Storage 1.5.91. The mod has been in the pack since 2.25 or earlier, and it has been updated many times since.^[1]

The pack changelogs only record which version the mod moved to, so this is a list of version steps rather than a list of features. Here are the main milestones.^{[6][7][8][9][10]}

Unverified The sources here don't say what each of these updates actually changed (new features, fixes or balance tweaks). No changelogs are stored for the shipped jars, so the mod's own release notes are where to look for details on a specific version.
