What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks adds upgradeable backpacks and a big set of upgrade items you can slot into them. This pack ships version 3.24.18 of the mod, and it has been in the pack since version 2.2 or earlier.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
The pack's "storage" quest chapter walks you through the mod. It starts with the plain Backpack in a quest in "?". From there you move on to the Copper Backpack and the Upgrade Base.[2]
Two paths to follow
The quests split into two tracks. The first is the backpack tiers, and the second is the upgrades.[2]
- Backpack tiers: after the copper backpack comes the Iron Backpack, then the Gold Backpack, then the Diamond Backpack. The chain ends at the Netherite Backpack.[2]
- Upgrades: nearly every upgrade quest unlocks after you get the Upgrade Base, so you can pick the ones you want in any order.[2]
What the upgrade quests cover
- Collecting and moving items: Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade, Deposit Upgrade and Filter Upgrade.[2]
- Refilling and swapping: Refill Upgrade, Restock Upgrade and Tool Swapper Upgrade.[2]
- Processing: Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade, Compacting Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade and Stonecutter Upgrade.[2]
- Utility and capacity: Tank Upgrade, Battery Upgrade, Pump Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Void Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Everlasting Upgrade, Inception Upgrade and the Stack Upgrade Tier 1 line.[2]
Many upgrades also have an advanced version with its own quest that unlocks after the basic one. Examples are the Advanced Magnet Upgrade and the Advanced Filter Upgrade. The stack upgrades chain the same way, from Stack Upgrade Tier 2 to Stack Upgrade Tier 3. There is also a single quest that accepts any one of the Chipped workbench upgrades.[2]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this mod is part of the ATM Star quest path, and they don't describe the pack's balance changes for it.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
5 parts
In this pack the quest book has a "storage" chapter for Sophisticated Backpacks, and the order below follows it. You start with a plain backpack, move up through the metal tiers, and add upgrades as you need them.[2]
Step 1: Make your first backpack
Everything starts with the Backpack. It is the first quest in the chapter (a quest in "?"), and the rest of the chapter branches out from it.[2]

Step 2: Upgrade the backpack tier
Each tier is a step up from the last, so you don't start over. The quest chain climbs through the Copper Backpack (a quest in "?"), the Iron Backpack (a quest in "?"), the Gold Backpack (a quest in "?") and the Diamond Backpack (a quest in "?"), and finally netherite (a quest in "?"). The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack recipe for each of the first four.[2][3]

Step 3: Get an Upgrade Base
The Upgrade Base is the second key item. Almost every upgrade quest in the chapter unlocks after it (a quest in "?"), and many upgrade recipes use it as an ingredient.[2][3]
Step 4: Pick your first upgrades
The basic upgrade quests all unlock after the Upgrade Base quest. These are good early picks, with what each one does:[2]
- Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, and Magnet Upgrade magnets items into the backpack from a range.[2][4]
- Crafting Upgrade puts a crafting table in an upgrade tab.[2][4]
- Deposit Upgrade deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click.[2][4]
- Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and out of the backpack.[2][4]

The chapter also has a stack upgrade line, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 4. You unlock it one tier at a time, starting with a quest in "?".[2]
Later: advanced upgrades and protection
Most basic upgrades have an advanced version with more filtering options, and the quests unlock each one after its basic upgrade. In this pack you craft the advanced version from the basic one, for example the Advanced Pickup Upgrade.[2][3][4]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
6 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks works through upgrades that you slot into a backpack's upgrade tabs. The sources for this pack explain what those upgrades do, how their filters behave and which config values apply, so that's what this section covers.[4][5]
Workstations in an upgrade tab
Several upgrades let you use a workstation from inside the backpack. That covers the Crafting Upgrade and the Anvil Upgrade, plus Chipped ones such as Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade and Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade. There are also Smithing, Stonecutter and Sawmill upgrades.[3][4]

Smelting upgrades
The Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and the Smoking Upgrade put smelting, blasting and smoking into an upgrade tab. The auto versions, Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, also automatically pull and push items. Blasting is for ores and metal stuff, and smoking is for food.[3][4]
In this pack you can upgrade straight from one furnace type to another instead of starting over. The Blasting Upgrade can be made from the Smelting Upgrade, and the Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking upgrades can both be made from the Auto-smelting Upgrade.[3]

Speed and fuel use are both set by multipliers, where 1.0 matches a vanilla furnace. The pack leaves server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier and server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier at 1, and the Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking upgrades and the plain Blasting Upgrade are set the same way. Each of these multipliers accepts values from 0.25 to 4.0.[5]
The auto smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades also have filters: 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots, shown 4 per row. These are the mod's default values, and the pack hasn't changed them.[5]
Moving and sorting items
The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack, which matters when you automate with pipes. Its advanced version has more filtering options. Most of the advanced upgrades use 16 filter slots with 4 per row in this pack, and the Advanced Refill Upgrade is the exception at 12. All of these match the mod defaults, and the filter slot counts can be set between 1 and 20.[4][5]

The Deposit Upgrade deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click. The Restock Upgrade does the reverse and restocks the backpack from that inventory. The advanced versions of both add filtering options.[3][4]

For picking things up, the Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack collect items and the Magnet Upgrade pulls them in from range. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade collects from a greater range, and in this pack its range is set by server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange at 5 blocks (the mod default, adjustable from 1 to 20).[4][5]
The Compacting Upgrade turns items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options.[3][4]

The Void Upgrade voids items selected in its filter. In this pack server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled is true, so the void upgrade can void anything instead of only offering the overflow option.[4][5]
Upgrades that act on you
- The Feeding Upgrade feeds you with food from the backpack's inventory. The advanced version gives more options for when food gets fed.[3][4]
- The Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. The advanced version adds effect filtering options.[3][4]
- The Refill Upgrade keeps refilling a stack of selected items in your inventory. The advanced version allows more precise target slot selection and middle-click picking of blocks from the backpack.[4]
- The Tool Swapper Upgrade automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one that's effective on the block or entity you left-click.[4]

Fluids, experience and energy
The Tank Upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage, and the Battery Upgrade does the same with energy storage. The Pump Upgrade moves fluids between the tank and adjacent blocks. The advanced pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it can filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between the tank and the player.[4]
Capacity and protection
Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot: the starter tier by 1.5, tier 1 by 2, tier 2 by 4, tier 3 by 8 and tier 4 by 16. The omega tier raises the stack size limit to 2,147,483,647. Stack downgrades go the other way and divide the number of stacks by 8, 16 or 32 depending on tier.[4]
The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The Inception Upgrade makes it possible to put backpacks inside a backpack.[3][4]

On servers, server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true in this pack. That lets a player right-click a backpack that someone else is wearing to open it, as long as that backpack's setting allows it. Turning the option off disables the capability for everyone and removes the related settings from the backpack.[4][5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Backpack progression in the pack is a straight ladder. You start with the plain Backpack and climb through Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite. The quests in the storage chapter follow that ladder, and a second branch of quests covers the upgrades you slot into the backpack. The quests in this chapter have no titles, so I'll point to them by ID.[2]
The backpack tiers
The first quest, a quest in "?", asks you to get the basic Backpack. Two quests unlock after it: the Copper Backpack quest and the Upgrade Base quest. Here's how the basic backpack is made.[2]

The higher tiers are made by upgrading a backpack you already have, so you keep your earlier work. The Copper Backpack quest is a quest in "?". The Iron Backpack quest, a quest in "?", comes after both the basic backpack quest and the copper quest.[2][3]

Upgrade Base and basic upgrades
Many upgrades are built on the Upgrade Base, and a quest in "?" is the quest that the whole upgrade branch hangs off. Once it's done, a big batch of quests opens at the same time. They cover the Deposit, Everlasting, Tank, Pickup, Magnet, Filter, Compacting, Blasting, Smoking, Smelting, Refill, Restock, Feeding, Tool Swapper, Crafting, Stonecutter, Jukebox, Battery, Pump, Inception, Void and Chipped upgrades, plus the first stack upgrade.[2][3]
The Chipped quest, a quest in "?", is an either-or task. Any one of the seven Chipped bench upgrades completes it, for example Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade or Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[2][3]
Stack upgrades
Stack upgrades are their own ladder. The quest line runs from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 (a quest in "?") to Tier 2 (a quest in "?"), Tier 3 (a quest in "?") and Tier 4 (a quest in "?"). Each tier is crafted from the one before it. Tier 1 can also be made from the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier.[2][3]

Advanced upgrades
Most basic upgrades have an Advanced version, and each Advanced quest unlocks after the quest for its basic version. For example, a quest in "?" for the Advanced Pickup Upgrade comes after the Pickup quest. The recipe is a next-tier upgrade: you put the basic upgrade in the crafting grid along with extra materials.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects with three other mods through in-pack recipes: Chipped, Sawmill and Sophisticated Storage. Chipped and Sawmill each have a block that is turned into a backpack upgrade. Sophisticated Storage has recipes that convert upgrades between the two Sophisticated mods.[3]
Chipped workbench upgrades
Each Chipped workbench block has a matching backpack upgrade, made from the block and an Upgrade Base. The pack has seven of them:[2][3]
- Alchemy Bench becomes Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade[3]
- Botanist Workbench becomes Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade[3]
- Carpenters Table becomes Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade[3]
- Glassblower becomes Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade[3]
- Loom Table becomes Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade[3]
- Mason Table becomes Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade[3]
- Tinkering Table becomes Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
Everything for this mod lives in one quest chapter, called "storage". None of the quests have titles, and every one is a simple obtain-the-item task. You hand in the item and the quest completes. The order comes from which quests unlock which.[2]
The backpack line
The chapter starts with the plain Backpack in quest a quest in "?". From there the backpack tiers are a straight line you climb one step at a time:[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Copper Backpack after the basic backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Iron Backpack. It needs both the basic backpack and the copper backpack quests done first.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Gold Backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" finishes the line with the Netherite Backpack.[2]
The upgrade tree
The second branch starts at a quest in "?", which asks for the Upgrade Base. It also unlocks after the basic backpack quest. Almost every basic upgrade quest hangs off this one, so you can do them in any order you like.[2]
- Item handling: Deposit Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Pickup Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Magnet Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Filter Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Refill Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Restock Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Void Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Tool Swapper Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Processing and crafting: Compacting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Smelting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Blasting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Smoking Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Crafting Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Stonecutter Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Utility: Everlasting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Tank Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Battery Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Jukebox Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Feeding Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Pump Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Inception Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- a quest in "?" accepts any one of the Chipped upgrades, for example Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade or Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade. You don't need all of them.[2]
Advanced upgrades and stack upgrades
Many basic upgrades have an advanced follow-up quest that unlocks once you finish the basic one:[2]
- Advanced Deposit Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Pickup Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Magnet Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Advanced Filter Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Advanced Refill Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Restock Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Void Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Tool Swapper Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Advanced Feeding upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Advanced Compacting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), plus the auto versions of the furnace-style upgrades: Auto-smelting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Auto-blasting Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Auto-smoking Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- The pump chain runs Advanced Pump Upgrade (a quest in "?") and then Experience Pump Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
The stack upgrades form their own chain. a quest in "?" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 1, then a quest in "?" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 2, a quest in "?" for Stack Upgrade Tier 3, and a quest in "?" for Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Each tier unlocks after the previous one.[2]
Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news first: every option in this pack's server config that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default. The pack doesn't change any of the numbers below, so what you see is stock Sophisticated Backpacks behaviour. All of these live in the server config file, so on a server the server's copy is the one that counts.[6]
Backpack sizes and upgrade slots
These are the options most players want to know about. Each tier has an inventory size and a number of upgrade slots, and both are left at the mod default.[6]
- Leather: 27 inventory slots (server.leatherBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.leatherBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Copper: 45 inventory slots (server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 1 upgrade slot (server.copperBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Iron: 54 inventory slots (server.ironBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 2 upgrade slots (server.ironBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Gold: 81 inventory slots (server.goldBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 3 upgrade slots (server.goldBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Diamond: 108 inventory slots (server.diamondBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 5 upgrade slots (server.diamondBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
- Netherite: 120 inventory slots (server.netheriteBackpack.inventorySlotCount) and 7 upgrade slots (server.netheriteBackpack.upgradeSlotCount).[6]
Limits and carrying rules
- server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many of certain upgrades one backpack can hold: 3 stack upgrades, 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[6]
- Carrying lots of backpacks doesn't slow you down here. server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false. The threshold in server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks is 3, but it only matters if you turn the slowness on.[6]
- server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false, so active upgrades like magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding aren't limited to the backpack you're wearing.[6]
- server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true, so on a server a player can right-click another player's worn backpack to open it. Turn it off if that's a problem for your server.[6]
- server.disallowedItems is empty, so no items are banned from backpacks. The stack upgrade does have a no-stack list in server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems, covering the toolbox, quiver, bundle and every shulker box colour.[6]
Upgrade tuning
- Magnet range is 3 blocks for the basic upgrade (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange) and 5 blocks for the advanced one (server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[6]
- Furnace-style upgrades (smelting, smoking, blasting and their auto versions) run at a speed multiplier of 1 and a fuel efficiency multiplier of 1, which matches a vanilla furnace. One example is server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier.[6]
- Tank upgrade capacity is 4,000 mB per row of storage slots (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow). The battery side gets 10,000 FE per row (server.tankUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow).[6]
- The XP pump can mend items (server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true) and uses at most 5 experience points per mending operation (server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending).[6]
- Both void upgrades can void anything, not just overflow: server.voidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled and server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled are true. Be careful with the filters.[6]
Mobs wearing backpacks
Mobs can spawn wearing a backpack with a chance of 0.01 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance). When you kill one, it drops the backpack with a chance of 0.5 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance), plus 0.15 per looting level (server.entityBackpackAdditions.lootingChanceIncreasePerLevel). Loot, health buffs, potion effects and armor for these mobs are all switched on. Jukebox playing is off (server.entityBackpackAdditions.playJukebox).[6]
Unverified Options like the on/off toggles and the block and item lists don't show a mod default in the pack data, so it isn't confirmed whether the pack changed any of them from the mod's own defaults.
