What is Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Sophisticated Backpacks adds upgradeable backpacks and a big set of upgrade items you can slot into them. This pack ships version 3.24.18 of the mod, and it has been in the pack since version 2.2 or earlier.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
The pack's "storage" quest chapter walks you through the mod. It starts with the plain Backpack in a quest in "?". From there you move on to the Copper Backpack and the Upgrade Base.[2]
Two paths to follow
The quests split into two tracks. The first is the backpack tiers, and the second is the upgrades.[2]
- Backpack tiers: after the copper backpack comes the Iron Backpack, then the Gold Backpack, then the Diamond Backpack. The chain ends at the Netherite Backpack.[2]
- Upgrades: nearly every upgrade quest unlocks after you get the Upgrade Base, so you can pick the ones you want in any order.[2]
What the upgrade quests cover
- Collecting and moving items: Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade, Deposit Upgrade and Filter Upgrade.[2]
- Refilling and swapping: Refill Upgrade, Restock Upgrade and Tool Swapper Upgrade.[2]
- Processing: Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade, Smoking Upgrade, Compacting Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade and Stonecutter Upgrade.[2]
- Utility and capacity: Tank Upgrade, Battery Upgrade, Pump Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade, Void Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Everlasting Upgrade, Inception Upgrade and the Stack Upgrade Tier 1 line.[2]
Many upgrades also have an advanced version with its own quest that unlocks after the basic one. Examples are the Advanced Magnet Upgrade and the Advanced Filter Upgrade. The stack upgrades chain the same way, from Stack Upgrade Tier 2 to Stack Upgrade Tier 3. There is also a single quest that accepts any one of the Chipped workbench upgrades.[2]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this mod is part of the ATM Star quest path, and they don't describe the pack's balance changes for it.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
In this pack the quest book has a "storage" chapter for Sophisticated Backpacks, and the order below follows it. You start with a plain backpack, move up through the metal tiers, and add upgrades as you need them.[2]
Step 1: Make your first backpack
Everything starts with the Backpack. It is the first quest in the chapter (a quest in "?"), and the rest of the chapter branches out from it.[2]

Step 2: Upgrade the backpack tier
Each tier is a step up from the last, so you don't start over. The quest chain climbs through the Copper Backpack (a quest in "?"), the Iron Backpack (a quest in "?"), the Gold Backpack (a quest in "?") and the Diamond Backpack (a quest in "?"), and finally netherite (a quest in "?"). The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack recipe for each of the first four.[2][3]

Step 3: Get an Upgrade Base
The Upgrade Base is the second key item. Almost every upgrade quest in the chapter unlocks after it (a quest in "?"), and many upgrade recipes use it as an ingredient.[2][3]
Step 4: Pick your first upgrades
The basic upgrade quests all unlock after the Upgrade Base quest. These are good early picks, with what each one does:[2]
- Pickup Upgrade makes the backpack pick up items, and Magnet Upgrade magnets items into the backpack from a range.[2][4]
- Crafting Upgrade puts a crafting table in an upgrade tab.[2][4]
- Deposit Upgrade deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right-click.[2][4]
- Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and out of the backpack.[2][4]

The chapter also has a stack upgrade line, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 4. You unlock it one tier at a time, starting with a quest in "?".[2]
Later: advanced upgrades and protection
Most basic upgrades have an advanced version with more filtering options, and the quests unlock each one after its basic upgrade. In this pack you craft the advanced version from the basic one, for example the Advanced Pickup Upgrade.[2][3][4]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?
5 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks has no machines or multiblocks. The backpack is a portable inventory, and nearly everything it does comes from upgrades that sit in upgrade tabs. This section covers how those upgrades handle crafting, smelting, items, fluids and automation, as far as the pack's sources explain them.[5]
Stations in an upgrade tab
Several upgrades put a whole workstation inside the backpack, each in its own upgrade tab. The Crafting Upgrade and the Anvil Upgrade are the classic examples, and their recipes are shown below. Other upgrades add a stonecutter, a smithing table, and the Chipped workbenches, such as Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade. Each Chipped upgrade is a Chipped workbench in an upgrade tab.[5][6]

Cooking works the same way. The Smelting Upgrade smelts, the Blasting Upgrade blasts ores and metal stuff, and the Smoking upgrade cooks food. Each has an Auto version, such as Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade. The tooltips say the Auto versions automatically pull and push items, which is what you want for hands-off processing.[5][6]
In this pack you can upgrade a plain smelting or auto-smelting upgrade into its blasting version instead of crafting from scratch. These are the conversion recipes:[6]

Moving and sorting items
The Deposit Upgrade sends items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak right click. The Restock upgrade works the other way and restocks the backpack from a sneak right clicked inventory. Advanced versions of both exist with more filtering options.[5][6]
Crafting Shaped

For automation, the Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the backpack. The Pickup and Magnet upgrades make the backpack collect items, with the Magnet pulling them in from range. The Advanced Magnet reaches a greater range. The Void upgrade deletes items you select in its filter, so set it up carefully.[5][6]
The Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The Advanced Compacting upgrade handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options.[5][6]

Fluids, energy and experience
The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage, and the Battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. Both cost you item slots, which is the trade-off for carrying fluids or power.[5]
The Pump upgrade pumps fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The Advanced Pump works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump upgrade pumps experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.[5]
Looking after the player
- The Feeding Upgrade feeds you with food from the backpack's inventory. The advanced version adds more options for when food is fed.[5][6]
- The Refill upgrade keeps refilling a stack of selected items in your inventory, and you scroll to change the target slot. The advanced version allows more precise target slot selection and middle click picking of blocks from the backpack.[5]
- The Tool Swapper upgrade automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one effective on the block or entity when you left click it. The advanced version adds filter options.[5]
- The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void.[5][6]
- The Inception Upgrade lets you put backpacks inside the backpack.[5][6]
- The Infinity upgrade makes all items in the backpack infinite.[5]
Capacity and sharing
Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot. The starter tier multiplies by 1.5, tier 1 by 2, tier 2 by 4, tier 3 by 8 and tier 4 by 16.[5]
A backpack setting controls whether another player can open your worn backpack. When it is on, and the backpack is worn and visible, another player can open it by right clicking your back. When it is off, they can't, even if the backpack is worn.[5]
Unverified No config files for this mod were available for this pack, so the exact backpack slot counts, tank and battery capacities, magnet ranges and smelting speeds are unverified. Check them in game.
How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Backpack progression in the pack is a straight ladder. You start with the plain Backpack and climb through Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite. The quests in the storage chapter follow that ladder, and a second branch of quests covers the upgrades you slot into the backpack. The quests in this chapter have no titles, so I'll point to them by ID.[2]
The backpack tiers
The first quest, a quest in "?", asks you to get the basic Backpack. Two quests unlock after it: the Copper Backpack quest and the Upgrade Base quest. Here's how the basic backpack is made.[2]

The higher tiers are made by upgrading a backpack you already have, so you keep your earlier work. The Copper Backpack quest is a quest in "?". The Iron Backpack quest, a quest in "?", comes after both the basic backpack quest and the copper quest.[2][3]

The Iron Backpack has two recipes. You can upgrade the plain Backpack directly and skip copper, or upgrade the Copper Backpack. The quest order runs through copper, but the direct recipe exists too.[2][3]

Upgrade Base and basic upgrades
Many upgrades are built on the Upgrade Base, and a quest in "?" is the quest that the whole upgrade branch hangs off. Once it's done, a big batch of quests opens at the same time. They cover the Deposit, Everlasting, Tank, Pickup, Magnet, Filter, Compacting, Blasting, Smoking, Smelting, Refill, Restock, Feeding, Tool Swapper, Crafting, Stonecutter, Jukebox, Battery, Pump, Inception, Void and Chipped upgrades, plus the first stack upgrade.[2][3]
The Chipped quest, a quest in "?", is an either-or task. Any one of the seven Chipped bench upgrades completes it, for example Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade or Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[2][3]
Stack upgrades
Stack upgrades are their own ladder. The quest line runs from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 (a quest in "?") to Tier 2 (a quest in "?"), Tier 3 (a quest in "?") and Tier 4 (a quest in "?"). Each tier is crafted from the one before it. Tier 1 can also be made from the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier.[2][3]

Advanced upgrades
Most basic upgrades have an Advanced version, and each Advanced quest unlocks after the quest for its basic version. For example, a quest in "?" for the Advanced Pickup Upgrade comes after the Pickup quest. The recipe is a next-tier upgrade: you put the basic upgrade in the crafting grid along with extra materials.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?
2 parts
Sophisticated Backpacks connects to two other mods in this pack: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. Both links show up in the pack's recipes, and the Chipped link also has a quest.[6][7]
Chipped workbench upgrades
There are seven Chipped upgrades for your backpack, one for each Chipped workbench: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. The workbenches include the Glassblower and the Mason Table, and the recipe below shows the Glassblower upgrade.[6][7]

The other six Chipped upgrades follow the same pattern, each with its own workbench block.
The storage questline has a single quest, a quest in "?", that accepts any one of these seven Chipped upgrades. It unlocks after the quest for the Upgrade Base, a quest in "?".[7]
Sharing upgrades with Sophisticated Storage
The pack has recipes that convert upgrades between Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks. For example, a Magnet Upgrade can be turned into a Magnet Upgrade.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Everything for this mod lives in one quest chapter, called "storage". None of the quests have titles, and every one is a simple obtain-the-item task. You hand in the item and the quest completes. The order comes from which quests unlock which.[2]
The backpack line
The chapter starts with the plain Backpack in quest a quest in "?". From there the backpack tiers are a straight line you climb one step at a time:[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Copper Backpack after the basic backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Iron Backpack. It needs both the basic backpack and the copper backpack quests done first.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Gold Backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
- a quest in "?" finishes the line with the Netherite Backpack.[2]
The upgrade tree
The second branch starts at a quest in "?", which asks for the Upgrade Base. It also unlocks after the basic backpack quest. Almost every basic upgrade quest hangs off this one, so you can do them in any order you like.[2]
- Item handling: Deposit Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Pickup Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Magnet Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Filter Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Refill Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Restock Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Void Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Tool Swapper Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Processing and crafting: Compacting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Smelting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Blasting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Smoking Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Crafting Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Stonecutter Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Utility: Everlasting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Tank Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Battery Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Jukebox Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Feeding Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Pump Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Inception Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- a quest in "?" accepts any one of the Chipped upgrades, for example Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade or Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade. You don't need all of them.[2]
Advanced upgrades and stack upgrades
Many basic upgrades have an advanced follow-up quest that unlocks once you finish the basic one:[2]
- Advanced Deposit Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Pickup Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Magnet Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Advanced Filter Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Advanced Refill Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Restock Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Void Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Advanced Tool Swapper Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Advanced Feeding upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- Advanced Compacting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), plus the auto versions of the furnace-style upgrades: Auto-smelting Upgrade (a quest in "?"), Auto-blasting Upgrade (a quest in "?") and Auto-smoking Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
- The pump chain runs Advanced Pump Upgrade (a quest in "?") and then Experience Pump Upgrade (a quest in "?").[2]
The stack upgrades form their own chain. a quest in "?" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 1, then a quest in "?" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 2, a quest in "?" for Stack Upgrade Tier 3, and a quest in "?" for Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Each tier unlocks after the previous one.[2]
What changed in Sophisticated Backpacks between versions?
Here's how Sophisticated Backpacks has moved through the pack's releases. The pack changelogs only record version bumps, so you can see which versions shipped when, but not what changed inside each update.[8][9][10]
- All the Mods 10 2.26: updated from 3.22.4 to 3.22.5.[10]
- All the Mods 10 2.29: updated from 3.22.5 to 3.22.8.[9]
- All the Mods 10 2.31: updated from 3.22.8 to 3.23.1.[8]
Version 3.23.1 is what you get in 2.31, shipped as the file sophisticatedbackpacks-1.21.1-3.23.1.1183.jar. The mod has been in the pack since 0.51 or earlier.[11]
Unverified No stored changelogs for the shipped jars are available in the sources here, so what each of these updates added, fixed or changed in gameplay is not shown.
