What is Sophisticated Backpacks?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Sophisticated Backpacks adds upgradeable backpacks and a big set of upgrade items you can slot into them. This pack ships version 3.24.18 of the mod, and it has been in the pack since version 2.2 or earlier.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack's "storage" quest chapter walks you through the mod. It starts with the plain Backpack in a quest in "?". From there you move on to the Copper Backpack and the Upgrade Base.[2]

Two paths to follow

The quests split into two tracks. The first is the backpack tiers, and the second is the upgrades.[2]

  1. Backpack tiers: after the copper backpack comes the Iron Backpack, then the Gold Backpack, then the Diamond Backpack. The chain ends at the Netherite Backpack.[2]
  2. Upgrades: nearly every upgrade quest unlocks after you get the Upgrade Base, so you can pick the ones you want in any order.[2]

What the upgrade quests cover

Many upgrades also have an advanced version with its own quest that unlocks after the basic one. Examples are the Advanced Magnet Upgrade and the Advanced Filter Upgrade. The stack upgrades chain the same way, from Stack Upgrade Tier 2 to Stack Upgrade Tier 3. There is also a single quest that accepts any one of the Chipped workbench upgrades.[2]

Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this mod is part of the ATM Star quest path, and they don't describe the pack's balance changes for it.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

In this pack the quest book has a "storage" chapter for Sophisticated Backpacks, and the order below follows it. You start with a plain backpack, move up through the metal tiers, and add upgrades as you need them.[2]

Step 1: Make your first backpack

Everything starts with the Backpack. It is the first quest in the chapter (a quest in "?"), and the rest of the chapter branches out from it.[2]

Step 2: Upgrade the backpack tier

Each tier is a step up from the last, so you don't start over. The quest chain climbs through the Copper Backpack (a quest in "?"), the Iron Backpack (a quest in "?"), the Gold Backpack (a quest in "?") and the Diamond Backpack (a quest in "?"), and finally netherite (a quest in "?"). The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack recipe for each of the first four.[2][3]

Step 3: Get an Upgrade Base

The Upgrade Base is the second key item. Almost every upgrade quest in the chapter unlocks after it (a quest in "?"), and many upgrade recipes use it as an ingredient.[2][3]

Step 4: Pick your first upgrades

The basic upgrade quests all unlock after the Upgrade Base quest. These are good early picks, with what each one does:[2]

The chapter also has a stack upgrade line, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 4. You unlock it one tier at a time, starting with a quest in "?".[2]

Later: advanced upgrades and protection

Most basic upgrades have an advanced version with more filtering options, and the quests unlock each one after its basic upgrade. In this pack you craft the advanced version from the basic one, for example the Advanced Pickup Upgrade.[2][3][4]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?

5 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks works through upgrades that you slot into the backpack's upgrade tabs. This section covers how those upgrades handle items, fluids and processing, as far as the pack's data explains it.[5]

Workstations in an upgrade tab

Many upgrades add a whole workstation to an upgrade tab. The Crafting Upgrade is a crafting table in a tab, and the Anvil Upgrade is an anvil in a tab. Stonecutter and Smithing Table upgrades exist too. The mod also has Chipped workbench upgrades, such as Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, each showing the matching Chipped block in a tab.[5][6]

Smelting, blasting and smoking

The Smelting Upgrade, Blasting Upgrade and Smoking Upgrade put smelting, blasting and smoking in an upgrade tab. Blasting is meant for ores and metal items, and smoking is for food.[5][6]

The auto versions do the same jobs, and their tooltips say they automatically pull and push items. These are Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade. The sources don't say which inventory slots or sides they pull from or push to, so test that in your own backpack.[5][6]

In this pack you can move between processing types by crafting. The blasting upgrade can be made from a smelting upgrade, and the auto-blasting and auto-smoking upgrades can be made from the auto-smelting upgrade.[6]

Item handling and automation

The Filter Upgrade filters items that are piped in and/or out of the backpack, so it is the upgrade that controls what automation can move. The Advanced Filter Upgrade does the same with more filtering options.[5][6]

  • Deposit Upgrade: deposits items from the backpack into an inventory you sneak-right-click. The advanced version has more filtering options.[5][6]
  • Restock Upgrade: the reverse of deposit. It restocks the backpack from a sneak-right-clicked inventory.[5]
  • Pickup Upgrade and Magnet Upgrade: the pickup upgrade makes the backpack pick up items. The magnet pulls items in from a range, and the advanced magnet has a greater range.[5]
  • Void Upgrade: voids the items you select in its filter.[5]
  • Compacting Upgrade: compacts items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The Advanced Compacting Upgrade handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering options.[5][6]
  • Feeding Upgrade: feeds you with food from the backpack's inventory. The advanced version gives more options for when food is fed.[5][6]
  • Refill Upgrade: keeps refilling the stack of selected items in your inventory. You scroll to change the target slot. The advanced version allows more precise target slot selection and middle-click picking of blocks from the backpack.[5]
  • Tool Swapper Upgrade: automatically swaps the item in your hand for the one that is effective on the block or entity you left-click.[5]

Fluids, energy and experience

The Tank upgrade replaces part of the backpack's inventory with fluid storage. The Battery upgrade does the same with energy storage. The sources don't give capacities or how many slots each one takes, so those numbers are not covered here.[5]

The Pump upgrade moves fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and with fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump upgrade pumps experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[5]

Storage size and protection

Stack upgrades multiply the number of stacks that fit in a slot. The multipliers are 1.5 for the starter tier, then 2, 4, 8 and 16 for tiers 1 to 4.[5]

The Everlasting Upgrade makes the backpack indestructible, so it can't despawn or fall into the void. The Inception Upgrade lets you put backpacks inside a backpack.[5][6]

Backpack settings also include a toggle for other players opening your backpack. When it is on and the backpack is worn and visible, another player can open it by right-clicking your back. When it is off, they can't, even if the backpack is worn.[5]

Unverified Backpack slot counts, upgrade slot counts, and tank and battery capacities would be set in the mod's config files. The sources here do not include any config files for this mod, so those values, and any changes the pack made to them, are not shown.

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Backpack progression in the pack is a straight ladder. You start with the plain Backpack and climb through Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite. The quests in the storage chapter follow that ladder, and a second branch of quests covers the upgrades you slot into the backpack. The quests in this chapter have no titles, so I'll point to them by ID.[2]

The backpack tiers

The first quest, a quest in "?", asks you to get the basic Backpack. Two quests unlock after it: the Copper Backpack quest and the Upgrade Base quest. Here's how the basic backpack is made.[2]

The higher tiers are made by upgrading a backpack you already have, so you keep your earlier work. The Copper Backpack quest is a quest in "?". The Iron Backpack quest, a quest in "?", comes after both the basic backpack quest and the copper quest.[2][3]

The Iron Backpack has two recipes. You can upgrade the plain Backpack directly and skip copper, or upgrade the Copper Backpack. The quest order runs through copper, but the direct recipe exists too.[2][3]

The last step is the Netherite Backpack, quest a quest in "?". It's a smithing recipe built on the Diamond Backpack, and the pack has changed it from the mod's version. Use the recipe below rather than any recipe you remember from the mod's defaults.[2][3]

Upgrade Base and basic upgrades

Many upgrades are built on the Upgrade Base, and a quest in "?" is the quest that the whole upgrade branch hangs off. Once it's done, a big batch of quests opens at the same time. They cover the Deposit, Everlasting, Tank, Pickup, Magnet, Filter, Compacting, Blasting, Smoking, Smelting, Refill, Restock, Feeding, Tool Swapper, Crafting, Stonecutter, Jukebox, Battery, Pump, Inception, Void and Chipped upgrades, plus the first stack upgrade.[2][3]

The Chipped quest, a quest in "?", is an either-or task. Any one of the seven Chipped bench upgrades completes it, for example Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade or Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[2][3]

Tip: The Everlasting Upgrade and Inception Upgrade recipes both call for a nether star, so plan for that before you chase them.[3]

Stack upgrades

Stack upgrades are their own ladder. The quest line runs from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 (a quest in "?") to Tier 2 (a quest in "?"), Tier 3 (a quest in "?") and Tier 4 (a quest in "?"). Each tier is crafted from the one before it. Tier 1 can also be made from the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier.[2][3]

Advanced upgrades

Most basic upgrades have an Advanced version, and each Advanced quest unlocks after the quest for its basic version. For example, a quest in "?" for the Advanced Pickup Upgrade comes after the Pickup quest. The recipe is a next-tier upgrade: you put the basic upgrade in the crafting grid along with extra materials.[2][3]

The smelting family has an extra route. The Auto-smelting Upgrade (a quest in "?") comes after the Smelting quest. You can convert it into the Auto-blasting Upgrade or the Auto-smoking Upgrade with a swap recipe. The basic Smelting Upgrade has the same kind of swap recipes for the Blasting and Smoking versions.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, Sophisticated Backpacks connects to two other mods through recipes: Chipped and Sophisticated Storage. Both link up through the upgrade system, so a backpack can do more than carry your stuff.[6]

Chipped workbench upgrades

Each Chipped workbench has a matching backpack upgrade, so you can take that workbench with you instead of placing it in your base. Each upgrade is crafted around its workbench and an Upgrade Base.[6]

All seven follow the same pattern. Here is the Mason Table version as an example:[6][7]

Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:chipped/mason_table_upgrade

The quest book has one quest, a quest in "?", that accepts any one of these seven upgrades. It unlocks after the Upgrade Base quest, a quest in "?".[7]

Swapping upgrades with Sophisticated Storage

The pack adds recipes that convert upgrades between Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks, so you don't have to rebuild an upgrade from scratch when you want it on the other side. Going from storage to backpack, the recipe takes the storage upgrade and gives you the backpack version. For example, the Magnet Upgrade:[6]

Magnet UpgradeMod recipe

These conversions cover the filter, pickup, magnet, feeding, jukebox, compacting, crafting, smelting, smoking, blasting, stonecutter and void upgrades. They also cover the advanced versions of the filter, pickup, magnet, feeding, jukebox, compacting and void upgrades, the auto-smelting, auto-smoking and auto-blasting upgrades, and all seven Chipped upgrades.[6][7]

Tip: Stack upgrades are numbered differently on each side. Stack Upgrade Starter Tier converts from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus. Backpack Tier 1, 2 and 3 convert from Storage Tier 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Stack Upgrade Tier 4 converts from Stack Upgrade Tier 5.[6]

The reverse direction, backpack to storage, also exists. Here it is for the Jukebox Upgrade:[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Everything for this mod lives in one quest chapter, called "storage". None of the quests have titles, and every one is a simple obtain-the-item task. You hand in the item and the quest completes. The order comes from which quests unlock which.[2]

The backpack line

The chapter starts with the plain Backpack in quest a quest in "?". From there the backpack tiers are a straight line you climb one step at a time:[2]

  1. a quest in "?" asks for the Copper Backpack after the basic backpack.[2]
  2. a quest in "?" asks for the Iron Backpack. It needs both the basic backpack and the copper backpack quests done first.[2]
  3. a quest in "?" asks for the Gold Backpack.[2]
  4. a quest in "?" asks for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
  5. a quest in "?" finishes the line with the Netherite Backpack.[2]

The upgrade tree

The second branch starts at a quest in "?", which asks for the Upgrade Base. It also unlocks after the basic backpack quest. Almost every basic upgrade quest hangs off this one, so you can do them in any order you like.[2]

Advanced upgrades and stack upgrades

Many basic upgrades have an advanced follow-up quest that unlocks once you finish the basic one:[2]

The stack upgrades form their own chain. a quest in "?" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 1, then a quest in "?" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 2, a quest in "?" for Stack Upgrade Tier 3, and a quest in "?" for Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Each tier unlocks after the previous one.[2]

Tip: Grab the Upgrade Base quest early. It opens up most of the chapter at once, so you can pick the upgrades you actually want instead of following a fixed route.[2]

What changed in Sophisticated Backpacks between versions?

Here's how Sophisticated Backpacks has moved through the pack's releases. The sources I have only cover version bumps, so this is a short list rather than a full changelog.[8][9][10]

  • All the Mods 10 2.26: Sophisticated Backpacks updated from 3.22.4 to 3.22.5.[9]
  • All the Mods 10 2.29: Sophisticated Backpacks updated from 3.22.5 to 3.22.8.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 2.30: the pack includes Sophisticated Backpacks 3.22.8 (the 1.21.1 build, file version 3.22.8.1178), the same version that 2.29 moved to.[8][10]

The mod was first included in All the Mods 10 0.51 or earlier.[10]

Unverified What actually changed inside the mod between 3.22.4, 3.22.5 and 3.22.8 (new features, fixes or balance changes) is unverified, because the sources here have no stored changelogs for the shipped jars. Check the mod's own release notes before assuming anything about backpack behavior.
