What is Productive Trees?

Productive Trees is all about breeding trees. The basic idea is simple: put one tree next to another tree near some bees, and the bees pollinate the leaves so you can get brand new tree species. The mod has 159 trees in total, so there's a lot to collect, and JEI is your best friend for looking up which trees breed together.[1][2]

When you use bees, the leaves of both trees need to be within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Every trip a bee makes from a flower back to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf. Range upgrades add 2 blocks per upgrade to that working area. A spyglass makes it easier to spot which leaves have been pollinated.[1]

You don't have to rely on bees. You can collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter to extract pollen, then use that pollen on a leaf to pollinate it by hand. If you're already running Productive Bees, the Pollen Sieve Upgrade goes in an advanced beehive and makes the bees collect pollen from nearby trees. Adding more than one sieve upgrade won't increase the yield.[1][3][4][5]

Beyond breeding, the mod adds machines and tree products. The Stripper takes the bark off wood and needs an axe to run, and there's also a Sawmill. Sugar Maple trees give maple sap that turns into Maple Syrup.[6][7][8]

This mod is a great fit if you enjoy collecting and slowly unlocking new stuff. The pack has its own Productive Trees quest chapter. It has quests for the Stripper and the Sawmill and a long chain of sapling quests where the rarer trees build on earlier ones. For example, the Thunder Bolt Sapling quest a quest in "?" comes after the Flickering Sun and Firecracker sapling quests.[8]

Watch out: This pack runs version 1.21.1-0.5.6 of the mod. The mod itself says it's in beta and not feature complete, and the tree growth features, meaning how the trees look when grown, are still under development.[1][9]

Unverified The mod has compatibility with the Tree Tap mod for extracting extra tree products, but it is not confirmed whether Tree Tap is installed in this pack.

How do you get started with Productive Trees?

3 parts

The mod's own guide sums up Productive Trees in one line: put one tree next to another tree near some bees, and profit. When bees pollinate the leaves of two different trees, you can get a brand new tree species. Breeding up that family tree is the whole game, so your first goal is to get your first crosses going.[1]

For bee breeding, the leaves of the two trees you want to cross must be within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip a bee makes from a flower back to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf.[1]

Don't have bees yet? You can also collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter to extract pollen. Then use the pollen on a leaf to pollinate it by hand and get a new species.[1][4][5][10]

Your first crosses

The pack's Productive Trees quest chapter opens with a row of quests that all unlock after the same starting quest. Three of them ask for saplings you can breed straight from vanilla trees: Beech Sapling in a quest in "?", European Larch Sapling in a quest in "?" and Cacao Sapling in a quest in "?". These make great first targets.[8][11]

Once you have Beech, it opens up the next branch. Alder Sapling (a quest in "?") comes after the Beech quest, and Aspen Sapling (a quest in "?") comes after Alder. Aspen needs Alder leaves, so breed Alder first.[8][11]

Saplings you have to find

Some opening quests ask for saplings you loot instead of breed. Their descriptions tell you where to look:[8][10]

Tip: Use a spyglass to see which leaves have been pollinated more easily. When you start scaling up, range upgrades add 2 blocks per upgrade to a hive's base range of 4. A pollen sieve upgrade in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees also makes the bees deposit some sifted pollen in the hive.[1][3][10]

The mod has 159 trees, so don't try to memorise the breeding tree. Use JEI to look up which trees breed together, and to find any other recipe in the mod.[2]

Watch out: The mod describes itself as beta and not feature complete. In particular, how trees look when fully grown is still under development.[1]

How does Productive Trees work?

7 parts

Productive Trees is all about breeding new tree species. The mod has 159 trees, and the in-game guide sends you to JEI to see which trees breed together and to look up every other recipe. Get used to checking JEI often, because it's your breeding chart.[2]

Watch out: The mod calls itself beta and not feature complete. The growth features, meaning how the trees look when fully grown, are still under development, so expect some rough edges.[1]

Breeding with bees

The simplest method, in the mod's own words: put one tree next to another tree near some bees, and profit. The bees do the pollinating for you, so the setup is mostly about getting the positions right.[1]

  1. Plant the two trees you want to breed so that the leaves of both are within 4 blocks of your bee nest or hive.[1]
  2. Make sure the bees have flowers nearby, because pollination only happens on their flower runs.[1]
  3. Each trip a bee makes from a flower back to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf.[1]
  4. Look through a spyglass to spot which leaves have been pollinated.[1]

The working area starts at a base range of 4. Range upgrades increase it by 2 blocks per upgrade, so you can fit more trees around a single hive.[1]

Manual pollination with pollen

You don't have to leave it all to the bees. Pollen is an item you apply yourself: use it on a leaf to manually pollinate that leaf and create a new tree species. Pollen works the same way whether bees or a pollen sifter collected it.[1][5][10]

To get pollen by hand, collect leaves and run them through the pollen sifter, which extracts pollen from the leaves. Then use the pollen balls on a leaf of the tree you want to cross it with.[1][4]

Pollen Sieve Upgrade

If you run Productive Bees, the Pollen Sieve Upgrade automates pollen collection. Install it in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees and the bees will collect pollen from nearby trees. Some of the pollen they gather is sifted and deposited straight into the hive, ready for you to pull out.[3][10]

Tip: Range upgrades also affect the sieve's collection area, so expand the range rather than stacking sieves. Installing more than one sieve upgrade will not increase the yield.[3]

Productive Bees also has an Allergy Bee, described as putting in extra effort to collect pollen so your allergies don't act up while you work with trees.[10]

Machines and upgrades

The Stripper takes the bark off wood and leaves it stripped. It needs an axe to operate, so give it one before you feed it logs.[6]

Time upgrades can be installed in machines for faster processing. You can install several for a bigger time reduction, and the second tier of the time upgrade is twice as good as the first.[10]

Unverified The sources don't list which Productive Trees machines accept time upgrades, how many slots they have, or how much time each upgrade saves. The sources also don't cover power, fluid or item-transfer handling for these machines.

Tree products and Tree Tap compat

Productive Trees works with the Tree Tap mod, which lets you extract some extra tree products. For example, maple sap comes from Sugar Maple trees and turns into Maple Syrup, and the guide calls out the Date Palm for its juicy trunks.[7][12][13]

Unverified It is not confirmed whether Tree Tap is installed in this pack, or exactly how maple sap and date palm juice are extracted here. Check JEI in your game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Finding rare saplings

Some saplings can't come only from breeding. Their descriptions point to loot chests around the world, so it pays to go exploring.[10]

  • Black Ember: bastion treasure chests in the Nether, guarded by brutes.[10]
  • Blue Yonder: treasure chests of sunken ships.[10]
  • Brown Amber: hidden beneath cold ocean water, waiting to be unearthed.[10]
  • Firecracker: ancient cities deep underground.[10]
  • Flickering Sun: treasure rooms of desert temples.[10]
  • Soul Tree: long-forgotten cities in the End.[10]

Wood blocks

Each wood type has its own planks and a matching bookshelf. Alder Planks makes Alder Bookshelf, Black Cherry Planks makes Black Cherry Bookshelf, and so on for every wood. That's handy for decorating a base themed around the trees you've bred.[11]

How do you progress through Productive Trees?

4 parts

Productive Trees doesn't have machine tiers the way a tech mod does. Your progression is a breeding tree: you cross two trees to unlock a new species, then cross that one with something else to go deeper. The mod has 159 trees, and JEI shows you which ones breed together, so keep it open while you work through this.[2]

The simplest way to breed is to plant one tree next to another near some bees. The leaves of both trees need to be within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip a bee makes from a flower back to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf. Range upgrades add 2 blocks per upgrade to the hive's working area. A spyglass helps you spot which leaves have been pollinated.[1]

If you'd rather do it by hand, run leaves through a pollen sifter to extract Pollen, then use the pollen on a leaf to pollinate it and get a new species. You can also put a Pollen Sieve Upgrade in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees so the bees collect pollen from nearby trees. Installing more than one sieve upgrade won't increase the yield.[1][3][4][5]

The starting row of quests

The pack's Productive Trees quest chapter opens with a row of quests that all hang off the same starting point. Each one asks you to obtain a single item. There are two machine quests here, the Stripper and the Sawmill. The rest are saplings: Beech Sapling, European Larch Sapling, Cacao Sapling, Silver Lime Sapling, Teak Sapling, Red Delicious Apple Sapling, Black Ember Sapling, Soul Tree Sapling, Blue Yonder Sapling, Firecracker Sapling, Flickering Sun Sapling and Brown Amber Sapling.[8]

The Stripper takes the bark off wood, and it needs an axe to operate.[6]

Three of the starting trees can be bred straight from vanilla trees, which makes them good first targets. In this pack these pollination recipes are the mod's own recipes, not pack-modified ones.[11]

The main branches

  • Beech branch: Alder Sapling leads to Aspen Sapling. Aspen then unlocks Elderberry, Hazel and Rowan. Rowan opens Holly and Hawthorn, and Holly goes on to Pomegranate and Boxwood.[8]
  • Silver Lime branch: this is the widest early fan-out. It unlocks White Willow, Wild Cherry, Dogwood, Walnut and Ash. Ash continues into Elm and Whitebeam, then Hornbeam. Walnut continues into Sweet Chestnut and Butternut.[8]
  • Fruit and spice line: White Willow leads to Sour Cherry Sapling. From there, Black Cherry leads to Coffea, then Clove, then Nutmeg and Allspice. Citron leads to Pomelo, Plum and Key Lime, and later to the citrus trees such as Mandarin, Lemon, Lime, Orange and Grapefruit.[8]
  • Teak branch: unlocks Balsa, Ipe, Kapok and Cashew. Kapok leads to Ceylon Ebony, then Yellow Meranti, then Mahogany Sapling. Mahogany in turn opens hardwoods like Rosewood, Brazilwood, Greenheart and Old Fustic.[8]
  • European Larch branch: unlocks Red Maple, Yew and Bull Pine. Bull Pine opens Lawson Cypress, Western Hemlock, Sequoia, Loblolly Pine and Silver Fir. Red Maple leads to Sugar Maple Sapling.[8]
  • Red Delicious Apple branch: unlocks Granny Smith, Sand Pear, Sweet Crabapple and Prairie Crabapple. It continues into Golden Delicious and then Beliy Naliv.[8]
  • Cacao branch: Papaya leads to Date Palm, which leads to Asai Palm.[8]

The special trees

Black Ember, Soul Tree, Blue Yonder, Firecracker, Flickering Sun and Brown Amber form their own cluster. Their follow-up quests each need two earlier quests done. Cave Dweller needs Soul Tree and Black Ember. Foggy Blast needs Soul Tree and Cave Dweller. Thunder Bolt needs Flickering Sun and Firecracker. Rippling Willow needs Blue Yonder and Flickering Sun. At the end of this cluster, Time Traveller needs Rippling Willow and Blue Yonder, and Night Fuchsia needs Purple Spiral and Sparkle Cherry.[8]

Tree Pollination (productivetrees)

Recipe id: productivetrees:pollination/cave_dweller

Quests that join two branches

Several quests need you to have progressed down two different branches, so it pays to keep more than one line going. Black Locust needs Silver Lime and Balsa. Olive needs Wild Cherry and Alder. Almond needs Plum and Walnut. Peach needs Sweet Chestnut and Plum. Blackthorn needs Red Delicious Apple and Plum. Rubber Tree needs Loblolly Pine and Sweetgum. One of the deepest quests is Star Fruit, which needs both Mango and Star Anise.[8]

Tip: A separate quest chapter in the pack also asks for Pollen first and then a Socotra Dragon Sapling. In the Productive Trees chapter, the Socotra Dragon Sapling sits after the Wenge quest, so the Teak line is the one to push if you need it.[8][14]

Unverified The sources don't say where to find the starting saplings that aren't bred from vanilla trees (such as Teak, Silver Lime, Red Delicious Apple or the special trees), or what the Stripper and Sawmill recipes are. Check JEI in-game for these. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How does Productive Trees work with other mods?

3 parts

Productive Trees hooks into the rest of this pack in three main ways. The Sawmill gets a large set of pack-added recipes for other mods' logs. Two big pack-added crafting recipes need specific Productive Trees saplings. And tree breeding works hand in hand with Productive Bees.[1][3][11]

Sawmill support for modded logs

The pack adds Sawmill recipes for logs from lots of other mods. You can run them through the same machine you use for your own trees and get those mods' planks out. Here's what's covered:[11]

Saplings in pack endgame recipes

The pack adds a crafting recipe for Dragon Soul that needs a Socotra Dragon Sapling. The rest of the recipe uses items from several other mods, including Allthemodium, Occultism and Productive Bees.[11]

The pack also adds a recipe for Magical Soil that needs a Moonlight Magic Crepe Myrtle Sapling. It pairs the sapling with high-end items from mods like Mystical Agriculture and All the Compressed.[11]

Tip: Not sure how to get these tree species? Use JEI to look up which trees breed together.[2]

Breeding trees with bees

Bees are the heart of tree breeding: put one tree next to another near some bees. The leaves of the two trees need to be within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip from a flower back to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf. Range upgrades increase the working area by 2 blocks per upgrade.[1]

If you're running Productive Bees, you can install a Pollen Sieve Upgrade in an advanced beehive so the bees collect pollen from nearby trees. Range upgrades affect the collection area, but adding more than one sieve upgrade won't increase the yield.[3]

You can use that bee-collected Pollen to pollinate leaves by hand and create new tree species.[5]

Unverified Productive Trees' in-game guide mentions compatibility with the Tree Tap mod for extracting extra tree products, such as Sugar Maple sap. However, the guide in this pack shows a message saying Tree Tap is not installed, so it's unconfirmed whether this integration works here.

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Productive Trees?

5 parts

Productive Trees shows up in two quest chapters in this pack. There's a dedicated chapter, productive_trees, that walks you through collecting a huge range of saplings. A second chapter, chapter_2_the_star, has a short two-quest chain built around Pollen.[8][14]

The Productive Trees chapter

This chapter is basically a giant sapling collection tree. Each quest is untitled and asks for a single item from the mod, almost always a sapling. Every quest in the first row unlocks from the same prerequisite quest, which isn't part of this chapter's own list. After that, each branch leads to more saplings.[8]

Where to start

Where the branches lead

  • Silver Lime opens a big branch that includes White Willow, Wild Cherry, Dogwood, Walnut and Ash. Many of the fruit and citrus quests grow out of this branch, such as Citron Sapling in a quest in "?" and Plum Sapling in a quest in "?".[8]
  • Teak leads to Balsa, Ipe, Kapok and Cashew. The Balsa quest a quest in "?" then opens tropical saplings like Coconut, Banana, Cocobolo and Rose Gum.[8]
  • Beech leads to Copper Beech, Alder, Brazil Nut and Pecan. European Larch leads to Red Maple, Yew and Bull Pine Sapling, and Bull Pine opens most of the conifers.[8]
  • Red Delicious Apple leads to the other apples, crabapples and pears. Cacao leads to Papaya and then on to the palms.[8]

The two-parent quests

Some quests only unlock once you've finished two earlier ones. This is especially true for the unusual first-row saplings. For example, Thunder Bolt Sapling in a quest in "?" needs both the Flickering Sun and Firecracker quests. Rippling Willow Sapling in a quest in "?" needs Blue Yonder and Flickering Sun. Night Fuchsia Sapling in a quest in "?" sits even deeper and needs both Purple Spiral and Sparkle Cherry.[8]

One of the deepest goals in the chapter is Star Fruit Sapling in a quest in "?". It needs both the Mango quest a quest in "?" and the Star Anise quest a quest in "?", so it's a good long-term target.[8]

The Pollen chain in chapter_2_the_star

  1. Get Pollen for a quest in "?".[14]
  2. Then get a Socotra Dragon Sapling for a quest in "?".[14]
Tip: The Socotra Dragon Sapling is also a goal in the Productive Trees chapter. There it's a quest in "?", which unlocks after the Wenge quest a quest in "?". You can follow that branch to see where it sits in the sapling tree.[8][14]

Unverified The quest data doesn't list item counts or rewards for these quests, so how many of each item you need and what you get for finishing them is unconfirmed.
