What is Occultism?

2 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits, also called demons, from "The Other Place" to work for you. The idea is inspired by Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books. Magicians look powerful, but the real work is done by the spirits they bind.[1]

Once you have some spirits on your side, you can automate tasks, store huge amounts of items, send demons to mine in void dimensions, make enchanted tools and jewelry, and get help from familiars. It suits you if you like magic that grows into real utility and automation. This pack ships Occultism 1.177.1.[1][2]

Getting started

  1. Break grass until you get Demon's Dream Seeds, the same way you'd find wheat seeds.[1][3]
  2. Craft the seeds with a book to get the Dictionary Of Spirits, the mod's in-game guide.[1][3]
  3. Follow the dictionary. It teaches you about the spirit world, helps you find hidden otherworld groves by gaining the "Third Eye", and walks you up to your first summon.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has its own Occultism quest chapter, and it has two starting points. One begins with Demon's Dream Seeds in a quest in "?" and the Dictionary Of Spirits in a quest in "?". The other is a quest in "?", which asks for Impure Yellow Chalk and Impure Purple Chalk, and the goggles, storage and Afrit Essence branches all come after it.[3]

How do you get started with Occultism?

4 parts

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits. Once you're set up, those spirits can automate tasks, store huge amounts of items, mine in void dimensions and help you craft powerful tools. Getting there takes a few steps, so here's the order the quests walk you through in this pack.[1][3]

Step 1: Seeds and the Dictionary of Spirits

Everything starts with Demon's Dream Seeds. Break grass until some drop, the same way you'd farm vanilla wheat seeds. The pack's Occultism quest chapter opens with a quest in "?", which asks for exactly these seeds.[1][3]

Next, turn the seeds into the Dictionary Of Spirits with a quick shapeless craft. This book is the mod's in-game guide, and you'll want it open for everything that follows. Crafting it completes a quest in "?", and the quest after that, a quest in "?", asks for Demon's Dream.[1][3][6]

Step 2: Spirit fire basics

a quest in "?" asks for three items: Otherstone, an Unstable Otherworld Sapling and a Spirit Attuned Gem. In this pack, all three come from spirit fire recipes that transform an ordinary vanilla item.[3][6]

Step 4: Your first bound spirit

All four branches lead into a quest in "?". That quest asks for a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) along with raw iron, raw gold, raw copper and raw silver.[3]

That bound Foliot book is where Occultism's storage system starts. Three rituals in this pack lead on from it, producing the Storage Actuator Base, the Stable Wormhole and the Tier 1 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer.[6]

How does Occultism work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Occultism doesn't run on power, pipes or cables the way tech mods do. It's a ritual magic system built around spirits you summon, and those spirits do the heavy lifting: automating tasks, storing huge amounts of items, mining in void dimensions and crafting powerful enchanted tools and jewelry.[1]

Your in-game manual is the Dictionary of Spirits. You get it by breaking grass until Demon's Dream seeds drop, the same way you'd get vanilla wheat seeds, then crafting those seeds with a book. After that, the dictionary walks you through the rest.[1]

Books of Binding: capturing spirits

Spirits are tied to books. Each spirit tier has its own Book of Binding: Book of Binding: Foliot, Book of Binding: Djinni, Book of Binding: Afrit and Book of Binding: Marid. You can craft each one directly, or make a Book of Binding: Empty first and turn it into the tier you need. The empty book is handy if you haven't decided which spirit you're after yet.[7]

Books of Calling: giving spirits a job

Once a spirit is bound, you give it a job by crafting its bound book into a Book of Calling. This pack has these worker books: Book of Calling: Foliot Transporter, Book of Calling: Foliot Janitor, Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack and Book of Calling: Djinni Machine Operator. The Transporter is your item-logistics spirit. The Machine Operator is the Djinni option for running machines.[7]

Dimensional Mineshaft: automated mining

The Dimensional Mineshaft is how you get spirits mining in void dimensions. You put spirits in lamps into it from the top. All the other sides are for pulling items out.[1][8]

Watch out: The Dimensional Mineshaft throws away any items it can't store. Empty it regularly, either by hand, with hoppers or with a Transporter spirit, or you'll lose ore.[8]

Storage

Occultism also has a spirit-powered storage system for holding vast amounts of items. Its Stable Wormhole is linked to a storage actuator, and the tooltip tells you whether it's linked and where the actuator is.[1][8]

Crafting rituals and tools

Most ritual crafts bind a spirit into the finished item, but not all of them. Forging Reinforced Deepslate is a service from Wild Spirits: you sacrifice the items and the spirit forges the block for you, without being bound to it. You can collect Reinforced Deepslate with an infused or iesnium pickaxe.[8]

Once you have an Apprentice Ritual Satchel, which carries your chalks and other ritual gear, you can move up to the Artisanal Ritual Satchel. The Artisanal one gets an Afrit to help and is aimed at speeding things up.[8]

This pack adds its own recipe for Iesnium Dust, so you have an extra way to make the dust besides whatever the mod provides.[7]

Familiar upgrades

Familiars have a small upgrade system of their own. The Blacksmith familiar can't be upgraded, but it upgrades your other familiars when you right-click it with iron ingots or iron blocks. Upgraded familiars gain extra effects. For example, the Greedy familiar can then find blocks for you after you right-click it with the block you want.[8]

Unverified The sources don't include the in-game guide's detailed text on ritual setup, pentacle layouts, mineshaft redstone control, mineshaft configuration or how the storage system is built. Check the Dictionary of Spirits in-game for those details.

How do you progress through Occultism?

5 parts

Occultism has its own quest chapter in this pack, and it branches quite a bit. You start with plants and chalk, then move through Spirit Fire and your first bound spirit. The late quests cover Iesnium tools, the Dimensional Mineshaft and upgraded dimensional storage. Here's how the quests connect and which in-pack recipes each step uses.[3]

Getting started: Demon's Dream

  1. Grab some Demon's Dream Seeds. a quest in "?" is one of the starting quests in the chapter.[3]
  2. The seeds unlock a quest in "?", which asks for the Dictionary Of Spirits, the mod's in-game guide book.[3][9]
  3. Next, a quest in "?" asks you to grow the seeds into Demon's Dream.[3]

Spirit Fire and your first materials

a quest in "?" is where the chapter really opens up. It asks for Otherstone, an Unstable Otherworld Sapling and a Spirit Attuned Gem. In this pack, you can make all three with Spirit Fire recipes. The gem also has a second recipe that uses Ars Nouveau's Enchanting Apparatus. A side quest, a quest in "?", asks for the Divination Rod, which is crafted with the gem.[3][6]

All four of those branches lead into a quest in "?". It asks for a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) along with raw iron, gold, copper and silver, so a bound Foliot is the big milestone of the early game.[3]

Unverified The ritual that turns an unbound Book of Binding into its bound version isn't included in the pack data used for this guide. Check the Dictionary of Spirits in game for the exact setup.

The spirit tiers

Occultism has four Books of Binding, one for each spirit type. You can craft each one from scratch or from a Book of Binding: Empty. The crafting rituals in this pack each list a bound book as an ingredient, so the spirit a ritual needs is a good hint about where it sits in your progression.[6]

  • Foliot (Book of Binding: Foliot): the bound version is used by the Storage Actuator Base, Stable Wormhole and Tier 1 Stabilizer rituals. It also goes into the Janitor, Lumberjack and Transporter Books of Calling.[6]
  • Djinni (Book of Binding: Djinni): the bound version is used by the Dimensional Matrix, Dimensional Mineshaft, Infused Pickaxe, Soul Gem, Storage Accessor, Dragon Familiar and Tier 2 Stabilizer rituals. It also goes into the Machine Operator Book of Calling.[6]
  • Afrit (Book of Binding: Afrit): the bound version is used by the Summon Unbound Afrit ritual, which gives Afrit Essence, and by the Tier 3 Stabilizer ritual.[6]
  • Marid (Book of Binding: Marid): the bound version is used by the Tier 4 Stabilizer ritual.[6]

The other starting quest, a quest in "?", asks for Impure Yellow Chalk and Impure Purple Chalk. From there, a quest in "?" asks you to bind a Djinni and leads into a quest in "?" for the Soul Gem. a quest in "?" asks for Afrit Essence and Impure Red Chalk. The red chalk recipe needs that essence, so plan on summoning an Afrit first.[3][6]

Tools and mining

The tool line also starts from that chalk quest. a quest in "?" asks for Otherworld Goggles and leads to a quest in "?" for the Infused Pickaxe, which comes from a Djinni ritual. After that, a quest in "?" asks for Iesnium Ore, and a quest in "?" asks for the Iesnium Pickaxe. In the pack's miner data, Iesnium Ore is a result for master-tier miners. Either pickaxe also completes a quest in "?" in the pack's basic tools chapter.[3][4][6]

How does Occultism work with other mods?

5 parts

Occultism doesn't sit on its own in this pack. Its gems, essences and otherworld wood appear in recipes from other mods, and the pack adds a few recipes of its own that pull Occultism items into bigger progression goals.[6]

Ars Nouveau crossover

You can make the Spirit Attuned Gem in Ars Nouveau's Enchanting Apparatus. The recipe combines Ars Nouveau essences with Occultism's Demon's Dream Essence, so it's a handy bridge if you're running both magic mods.[6]

Recipe id: ars_ocultas:spirit_attuned_gem

Once you have that gem, two Ars Nouveau imbuement recipes let you swap between Silver Ingot and Gold Ingot. The pack changed both of these recipes, so check the in-pack versions below rather than relying on what you remember from other setups.[6]

The "chapter_2_the_star" quest chapter points you the same way. It starts with Demon's Dream Seeds in a quest in "?". After that it branches into quests for the Dragon Familiar Spawn Egg in a quest in "?", the Stable Wormhole in a quest in "?" and the Soul Gem in a quest in "?".[5]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Occultism?

4 parts

Occultism shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. Most of it is in its own Occultism chapter, a few Occultism items appear in the chapter_2_the_star chapter, and one quest in the basic_tools chapter asks for an Occultism pickaxe. None of these quests have titles, so this guide follows them by what they ask you to bring.[3][4][5]

The Occultism chapter: starting points

The chapter has two quests with no prerequisites. a quest in "?" asks for Demon's Dream Seeds, and a quest in "?" asks for Impure Yellow Chalk and Impure Purple Chalk. The chalk quest is the bigger hub, because most of the chapter branches off it.[3]

The seeds quest has a short line of its own. a quest in "?" asks for the Dictionary Of Spirits, and after that a quest in "?" asks for the harvested Demon's Dream.[3]

Branches from the chalk quest

a quest in "?" needs both the Iesnium pickaxe quest and the Afrit essence quest to be done. It asks for a Block of Iesnium and a Book of Binding: Marid (Bound).[3]

The Otherworld branch

Two quests in the chapter unlock from a prerequisite quest that isn't listed in this chapter. a quest in "?" asks for a Divination Rod. a quest in "?" asks for Otherstone, an Unstable Otherworld Sapling and a Spirit Attuned Gem.[3]

That Otherworld quest opens four more quests:[3]

Once you finish all four, a quest in "?" opens up. It asks for a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) along with raw iron, raw gold, raw copper and raw silver.[3]

Other chapters

In the chapter_2_the_star chapter, a quest in "?" asks for Demon's Dream Seeds. It unlocks three quests: a quest in "?" for a Dragon Familiar Spawn Egg, a quest in "?" for a Stable Wormhole, and a quest in "?" for a Soul Gem.[5]

In the basic_tools chapter, a quest in "?" accepts either an Infused Pickaxe or an Iesnium Pickaxe. It unlocks after an earlier quest in that chapter.[4]

Tip: The Soul Gem and the Stable Wormhole are each asked for in both the Occultism chapter and the chapter_2_the_star chapter. Either pickaxe from the Occultism mining line also satisfies the basic_tools quest.[3][4][5]

Which Occultism config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits to do work for you. They can automate tasks, store huge amounts of items, mine in void dimensions and help you make enchanted tools and jewelry, and familiars can support you too. Those are the systems you'd most likely want to check settings for.[1]

Unverified We couldn't check this pack's Occultism config files, so we can't tell you which options matter most or whether All the Mods 10 8.1 changes any values from the mod defaults. This section will be filled in once the in-pack config values can be confirmed.

Tip: Until then, your best reference for how things work in the pack is the in-game Dictionary of Spirits. Craft it by combining Demon's Dream Seeds, which drop from breaking grass, with a book, then follow its instructions.[1]

What changed in Occultism between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 2.39 ships Occultism 1.177.1, built for Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge. Occultism has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 1.9 or earlier, so it's been part of your playthrough for a long time.[2]

Occultism updates by pack release

The pack changelogs record these Occultism updates, newest first.[10][11][12][13][14]

  • All the Mods 10 2.39: Occultism updated from 1.176.0 to 1.177.1.[10]
  • All the Mods 10 2.37: Occultism updated from 1.173.4 to 1.176.0.[11]
  • All the Mods 10 2.36: Occultism updated from 1.173.2 to 1.173.4.[12]
  • All the Mods 10 2.33: Occultism updated from 1.173.1 to 1.173.2.[13]
  • All the Mods 10 2.26: Occultism updated from 1.172.0 to 1.173.1.[14]

The two biggest version jumps came in pack releases 2.37 and 2.39, which moved Occultism from 1.173.4 up to 1.177.1. If you're coming back to an older world, those are the releases where the mod changed the most.[10][11]

Unverified The pack changelogs only list version numbers, and the mod's own changelogs for these jars weren't available, so the specific features, fixes, recipe changes or balance tweaks in each update can't be confirmed here. Check Occultism's official changelog if you need the details.
