What is Ars Nouveau?

2 parts

Ars Nouveau is a magic mod inspired by Ars Magicka. Instead of picking from a fixed list of spells, you build your own spells to fit whatever you need, anywhere you are. On top of spellcrafting, you'll create magical artifacts, perform rituals and much more.[1]

All the Mods 10 4.5 includes Ars Nouveau 5.10.2. It has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modlist.[2]

What you'll be doing

  • Crafting custom spells built for exactly the job you need done.[1]
  • Making powerful new baubles and trinkets.[1]
  • Powering magical machines.[1]
  • Automating your base with adorable magical servants.[1]

If you like the idea of magic that doubles as base automation, this is a great mod to dive into.[1]

Tip: All of the mod's documentation lives in-game in a Patchouli guidebook, so craft it early and keep it handy as you progress.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack gives Ars Nouveau its own quest chapter. One line follows your spell book upgrades: a quest in "?" asks for the Novice Spell Book, a quest in "?" follows with the Mage's Spell Book, and a quest in "?" finishes with the Archmage Spell Book.[3]

Another branch covers your core setup. It has quests for the Dowsing Rod, the Scribe's Table and the Imbuement Chamber. The Imbuement Chamber quest then leads into Source Gem and, after that, the Source Jar.[3]

The chapter also has a large set of glyph quests, one per glyph, such as Glyph Harm, Glyph Break and Glyph Lightning. That makes the chapter a handy checklist for building up your spell library.[3]

Your in-game guide also has an entry for Ars Ocultas, which adds compatibility between Occultism and Ars Nouveau along with a number of quality-of-life changes.[4]

How do you get started with Ars Nouveau?

5 parts

Ars Nouveau is a magic mod where you craft your own spells, make magical artifacts, perform rituals and automate your base with magical creatures. The mod's documentation is entirely in-game, in the Worn Notebook, so craft one early and keep it handy.[1][5]

In All the Mods 10 the Ars Nouveau quest chapter lays out a clear path through the early game. Each quest unlocks the next, so following them in order is the easiest way in.[3]

Your first spell book

The spell book line starts with a quest in "?", which asks for a Novice Spell Book. Later quests upgrade it to a Mage's Spell Book in a quest in "?", and then to an Archmage Spell Book in a quest in "?".[3]

Three quests share the same prerequisite, so you can do them in any order: a quest in "?" for the Dowsing Rod, a quest in "?" for the Scribe's Table and a quest in "?" for the Imbuement Chamber. The Imbuement Chamber matters most, because the rest of the main line follows from it.[3]

Source Gems, jars and Sourcestone

  1. After the Imbuement Chamber, a quest in "?" asks for a Source Gem.[3]
  2. The Source Gem quest unlocks two branches: a quest in "?" for a Source Jar and a quest in "?" for Sourcestone.[3]
  3. Source Gems appear in many Ars Nouveau recipes in this pack, from sourcelinks to apparatus crafts, so expect to need plenty of them.[6]

Pedestals, the Arcane Core and the Enchanting Apparatus

Once you have Sourcestone, a quest in "?" asks for an Arcane Pedestal. After that, a quest in "?" asks for both the Enchanting Apparatus and the Arcane Core.[3]

The Enchanting Apparatus is the reason to push through this step. In this pack it crafts items such as the Dominion Wand, the Amulet of Mana Boost, the Amulet of Mana Regen, the Belt of Levitation and the Arcanist and Battlemage armor pieces.[6]

How does Ars Nouveau work?

6 parts

Ars Nouveau is a magic mod built around crafting your own spells, making magical artifacts, performing rituals, and powering magical machines. The big automation hook is its adorable magical servants, which you can put to work around your base. The mod's documentation lives entirely inside the game, so the in-game book is your best companion alongside this guide.[1]

Source-hungry helpers: Drygmys

Drygmys produce loot from the mobs around them, and they burn source to do it. In this pack, each generation costs 1,000 source, set by drygmy_production.drygmyManaCost. A Drygmy also needs 20 channels before it actually produces any loot, set by drygmy_production.drygmyMaxProgress.[7]

The amount you get per cycle depends on how many creatures are nearby and how varied they are. Here is how the pack configures it:[7]

Tip: The entity bonus caps out, but the variety bonus counts each unique mob. If you want more loot per cycle, a mix of different mobs beats a pen crammed with just one type.[7]

Whirlisprigs

Whirlisprigs also run on mana. In this pack they consume 250 mana per generation, set by general.sylphManaCost. They must build up 250 progress before they create resources, set by general.whirlisprigProgress.[7]

Potion Melder

The Potion Melder pulls potion out of input jars and combines it into an output. On the pack's scale, 100 equals one potion. Each cycle, the melder takes 200 from each input jar and outputs 100, so every input gives up twice as much potion as comes out. Each cycle also costs 300 source. These values are set by block.melderInputCost, block.melderOutput and block.melderSourceCost.[7]

Related to potions: the enchanted flask can grant a potion level of at most 255 in this pack, set by block.enchantedFlaskCap. The config describes this as a safeguard against infinite potion-leveling exploits.[7]

Storage Lectern and Bookwyrms

The Storage Lectern links up inventories, and Bookwyrms raise how many it can handle. In this pack, each Bookwyrm lets the lectern support 8 inventories, set by general.bookwyrmLimit. The lectern also shows a recipe book icon, controlled by the client option overlays.showRecipeBook.[7][8]

Pedestals, cores and platforms

The Arcane Pedestal and Arcane Core are key building blocks for the mod's crafting setups. The Arcane Platform is crafted straight from a pedestal. It can be placed in any direction and used in place of a pedestal, which helps with compact or wall-mounted builds.[6][9]

Spirit Jars (Occultism integration)

This pack's Ars Nouveau guide includes Ars Ocultas, which adds compatibility between Occultism and Ars Nouveau. The headline feature is Spirit Jars: Occultism spirits can work inside a Containment Jar. Inside the jar they keep their normal behaviour and don't decay, which makes them great for automation.[4][10]

  • A Spirit Jar automatically picks up any item matching the spirit's filter within a 7x7 area centered on the jar. For example, a crushing spirit grabs any ore it can process.[10]
  • You can push items into the jar with a hopper or with Starbuncles, and the guide says any pipe should work too. You can also right-click an item directly onto the jar.[10]
  • Spirits keep their default behaviour, so a Crusher Spirit processes items and flings the output out in one of the directions around the jar.[10]
  • Janitor Spirits in jars pick up nearby items and push them into the inventory next to the jar. That makes collecting drops very easy.[10]
Tip: Because a crusher flings its output out of the jar, pair it with a jarred Janitor Spirit next to a chest to catch the results automatically.[10]

Unverified The in-game book has entries on source generation and transport (sourcelinks, Source Jars and relays), Starbuncle item transport, Wixie crafting and the Enchanting Apparatus. Their detailed mechanics could not be confirmed from the available sources, so check the in-game book for how they work in this pack.

How do you progress through Ars Nouveau?

6 parts

The Ars Nouveau quest chapter in this pack isn't one straight line. It branches into several paths: your spell book upgrades, the Source gear that powers everything, the Enchanting Apparatus and all the gear it unlocks, rituals, familiar charms and a big spread of glyph quests. Here's how those paths connect, so you always know what to go for next.[3]

Spell book tiers

Your spell book is the clearest tier ladder in the mod. The chapter starts you on the Novice Spell Book (a quest in "?"), then asks you to upgrade to the Mage's Spell Book (a quest in "?"), and finally to the Archmage Spell Book (a quest in "?"). Each quest only opens once the previous book is done.[3]

Both upgrades use a special book upgrade recipe that takes your current spell book as one of the inputs, so you keep building on the same book instead of starting over.[6]

First steps: the core blocks and Source

  1. The quests for the Dowsing Rod (a quest in "?"), the Scribe's Table (a quest in "?") and the Imbuement Chamber (a quest in "?") all unlock from the same earlier quest, so you can work on them side by side.[3]
  2. The Imbuement Chamber leads into the Source Gem quest (a quest in "?"), and that one quest opens up two branches at once.[3]
  3. One branch is the Source Jar (a quest in "?"). From there you can chase the Volcanic Sourcelink, Vitalic Sourcelink, Agronomic Sourcelink and Mycelial Sourcelink quests, plus the Potion Jar (a quest in "?"), which in turn unlocks the Alchemical Sourcelink (a quest in "?").[3]
  4. The other branch is Sourcestone (a quest in "?"), which leads to the Arcane Pedestal (a quest in "?").[3]

The Enchanting Apparatus and rituals

The Arcane Pedestal is the big fork in the middle of the chapter. It unlocks the quest for the Enchanting Apparatus together with the Arcane Core (a quest in "?"), and separately the Ritual Brazier (a quest in "?").[3]

Recipe id: ars_nouveau:enchanting_apparatus

Tip: The Enchanting Apparatus is also a quest task in the pack's allthemodium chapter (a quest in "?"), so building one pays off outside the Ars Nouveau chapter too.[11]

Once the Apparatus quest is done, a whole row of gear quests opens up: the Enchanter's Wand, Enchanter's Sword, Enchanter's Shield, Enchanter's Bow, Enchanter's Mirror, the Belt of Levitation and Belt of Unstable Gifts, both discount rings, both mana amulets, and the Jar of Light with the Jar of Voiding. Many of these are crafted in the Apparatus itself.[3][6]

The Apparatus quest also unlocks the Dominion Wand (a quest in "?"), which is your gateway to the familiar charm quests: Starbuncle Charm, Drygmy Charm, Whirlisprig Charm, Wixie Charm and Amethyst Golem Charm.[3]

Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

  • 2× any source gem

There's also a small side line from the Apparatus: the Magebloom Seed (a quest in "?") leads to Magebloom Fiber (a quest in "?"), then Spell Parchment (a quest in "?") and finally Runic Chalk (a quest in "?").[3]

On the ritual side, the Ritual Brazier quest branches into individual ritual quests, including Awakening, Binding, Burrowing, Challenge, Cloudshaping, Disintegration, Fertility, Flight, Moonfall, Overgrowth, Restoration, Scrying, Sunrise, Warping and Summon Wilden. You can do them in any order.[3]

Armor tiers

The mage armor sets live in the pack's basic_armor quest chapter rather than the Ars Nouveau one. There's a full-set quest for the Arcanist gear (a quest in "?"), the Battlemage gear (a quest in "?") and the Sorceror gear (a quest in "?").[12]

The Arcanist and Battlemage pieces are made in the Enchanting Apparatus using Magebloom Fiber, which is why the Magebloom line is worth doing early. The Battlemage pieces build on a stronger base armor than the Arcanist ones.[6]

Unverified The exact stats of each armor tier and where the Sorceror set ranks against the other two could not be confirmed for this pack.

Glyphs

Most of the chapter is glyph quests, one per glyph. They hang off different parent quests, so you'll see them unlock in groups rather than all at once. Early examples you'll likely grab include Glyph Break, Glyph Harm and Glyph Light, while glyphs like Glyph Blink, Glyph Split and Glyph Summon Vex sit in a separate group.[3]

How does Ars Nouveau work with other mods?

4 parts

Ars Nouveau is one of the most connected magic mods in the pack. Lots of other mods run their recipes through its Enchanting Apparatus and Imbuement Chamber, and a whole family of addons builds directly on its essences, charms and glyphs. The pack also adds and changes several recipes to tie it into the rest of your progression.[6]

Recipes the pack added

The biggest one is the Creative Source Jar. In this pack it's crafted on the Enchanting Apparatus with an ATM Star, so your Source storage endgame sits inside the pack's star progression.[6]

Ars Nouveau also shows up in the Wither's Compass. That recipe needs the Glyph Wither alongside wither-themed items from several other mods, so it's worth unlocking that glyph even if you don't plan to cast with it.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Ars Nouveau?

2 parts

This pack has a full chapter dedicated to Ars Nouveau. Its quests are item checklists: you complete each one by getting the listed item. Beyond that chapter, a few other chapters include Ars Nouveau items, either as required items or as one option among several.[3][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

The Ars Nouveau chapter

The chapter branches out from a few starting quests, and each of those needs a quest from outside this chapter first. One branch is your spell books: a quest in "?" asks for the Novice Spell Book, then a quest in "?" wants the Mage's Spell Book, and a quest in "?" ends the line with the Archmage Spell Book.[3]

Three quests share the same prerequisite: a quest in "?" for the Dowsing Rod, a quest in "?" for the Scribe's Table, and a quest in "?" for the Imbuement Chamber. The Imbuement Chamber quest is the root of most of the chapter.[3]

  1. After the Imbuement Chamber, a quest in "?" asks for a Source Gem.[3]
  2. The Source Gem opens two quests: a quest in "?" for a Source Jar and a quest in "?" for Sourcestone.[3]
  3. The Source Jar leads to the sourcelink quests: a quest in "?" (Volcanic), a quest in "?" (Vitalic), a quest in "?" (Agronomic) and a quest in "?" (Mycelial). It also leads to a quest in "?" for a Potion Jar, which in turn unlocks a quest in "?" for the Alchemical Sourcelink.[3]
  4. Sourcestone leads to a quest in "?" for the Arcane Pedestal. From there, a quest in "?" wants both the Enchanting Apparatus and the Arcane Core, and a quest in "?" asks for the Ritual Brazier.[3]

The Enchanting Apparatus quest opens up the gear side of the chapter. It unlocks quests for the Enchanter's Wand, Enchanter's Sword, Enchanter's Shield, Enchanter's Bow, Enchanter's Mirror, Belt of Levitation and Belt of Unstable Gifts. It also unlocks paired quests: both discount rings in a quest in "?", both amulets in a quest in "?", and the Jar of Light plus Jar of Voiding in a quest in "?".[3]

Two of those gear quests start their own chains. a quest in "?" asks for the Dominion Wand and unlocks the familiar charms: Starbuncle Charm, Drygmy Charm, Whirlisprig Charm, Wixie Charm and Amethyst Golem Charm. a quest in "?" asks for Magebloom Seed, which leads to Magebloom Fiber in a quest in "?", then Spell Parchment in a quest in "?", and finally Runic Chalk in a quest in "?".[3]

The Ritual Brazier quest unlocks a quest for each ritual. They include Awakening, Binding, Burrowing, Challenge, Cloudshaping, Disintegration, Fertility, Flight, Moonfall, Overgrowth, Restoration, Scrying, Sunrise, Warping and Summon Wilden.[3]

The chapter also has a separate quest for every glyph, for example a quest in "?" for Glyph Break and a quest in "?" for Glyph Harm. The glyph quests are split into groups, and each group hangs off a different prerequisite quest.[3]

Unverified What the prerequisite quests for the glyph groups ask for, and whether the groups match the glyph tiers, is not shown in the available sources.

Which Ars Nouveau config options matter?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Ars Nouveau splits its settings into two files: a client file for visuals and HUD tweaks that only affect your own game, and a common file for gameplay values like familiar production, mana costs and mob behavior. Below are the options you're most likely to touch, with the exact values All the Mods 10 8.1 ships.[18][19]

Client settings: visuals and HUD

Tip: Running shaders? If your sky looks broken, set misc.disable_skyweave to true. If particles turn invisible, set misc.opaque_particles to true. If the book GUI crashes with a Sodium-based renderer, set misc.gui_transparency to false. All three ship with the other value in this pack.[18]

Common settings: gameplay

Watch out: general.destructiveDiveBomb is true in this pack, so the Wilden Chimera's dive bomb destroys blocks. Don't fight it next to your base.[19]

Unverified The sources only show the values this pack uses, not the mod's own defaults. We can't confirm which of these settings All the Mods 10 changed from stock Ars Nouveau.

What changed in Ars Nouveau between versions?

  • 2.26: updated from 5.3.6 to 5.4.0.[34]
Tip: The pack stepped back to an older Ars Nouveau twice. Release 2.28 went from 5.4.0 to 5.3.6, and 2.41 went from 5.6.0 to 5.5.1. If you have an older world, check which pack version it was last played on.[28][33]

Unverified The changelogs only list version numbers. What each Ars Nouveau update added, changed or fixed, and why the pack went back to older versions in 2.28 and 2.41, can't be confirmed from the sources I have, so check the mod's own release notes for details.
