What is Not Enough Glyphs?
3 parts
Not Enough Glyphs (NEG for short) is a spellcasting addon that repacks popular utility glyphs from older addons and adds a few of its own. It also adds the SpellBinder, an alternative to the spellbook. If you like building spells and want more variety, this mod is for you.[1]
This pack ships Not Enough Glyphs 4.6.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]
New glyphs
- Trail is an echoing projectile. It resolves the spell along its path several times before it expires, like a lingering version of a projectile.[1]
- Plow lets you till dirt and do other hoe jobs. It is the glyph missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set.[1]
- Plane is a non-repeating version of linger. Use it to make the next spell area-of-effect, or to shape circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1]
- Contingencies store the spell that follows them and cast it when their condition happens. Mana is only spent on the first cast, and only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode blows up the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]
The SpellBinder
The SpellBinder holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. You can't craft spells on the fly with it, so it suits spells you won't edit again, or spells you want to share without handing over a whole book.[1]
It also accepts threads. Dedicated book threads, called book covers, fill those slots. They include focus covers, a Randomize thread, the Slow Power and Cheap Damage tradeoff pair, and the Sharp Pages and Hard Cover pair that turn the binder into a melee weapon.[1]
Repacked glyphs
NEG also repacks glyphs from other addons, including TooManyGlyphs, Omega, Elemental and Trinkets. Those copies disable themselves if the original addon is installed.[1]
Unverified No quests, in-jar guidebook or ATM Star path entries for this mod were found, so where it fits in the pack's progression is unconfirmed.
How do you get started with Not Enough Glyphs?
3 parts
Not Enough Glyphs adds extra glyphs for Ars Nouveau spellcasting, plus the Spell Binder, an alternative to the spellbook. The binder does not allow on-the-fly spellcrafting, but it holds more spells and can take optional upgrade threads. Here's the order I'd tackle things in.[1]
First: make the Spell Binder
Start with the Spell Binder. It holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it great for spells you won't ever edit, or for sharing a spell without handing over a whole book.[1][3]
This one is made at the Enchanting Apparatus, and it is the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.
There is also a dye recipe for the binder if you want to change its colour.[3]
Next: pick up a few useful glyphs
Next, grab some glyphs. The glyph recipes below are the mod's own, unchanged by the pack. Two good early picks are Glyph Plow, the glyph that lets a spell plow dirt and do other hoe jobs, and Glyph Feed. Feed has a Randomize augment that picks a random food instead of the first valid one.[1][3][4]

If you want something more advanced, Glyph Trail is the Echoing Projectile. It resolves the spell on its trail some times before expiring, like a lingering version of Projectile.[1][3]
Then: covers, Plane and contingencies
The binder accepts book covers, which are threads made for it. Slow Power slows your spells but gives a spell power buff. Cheap Damage makes spells a lot cheaper but very weak. The pack changed the recipes for both, so use the blocks below instead of relying on other guides.[1][3]

The pack also changed the recipes for Heavy Cover and the elemental covers Air Focus, Earth Focus, Fire Focus and Water Focus. The recipes are shown below.[3]

The Plane glyph, Glyph Propagate Plane, has a pack-changed recipe too. It's a non-repeating version of Linger, handy for making a following spell area-of-effect, or for circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1][3]

Contingencies, such as Glyph Contingency Fall and Glyph Contingency Death, store the spell that follows them for the duration of the effect. They cast it when their condition occurs, and you only spend mana on the initial cast.[1][3]
How does Not Enough Glyphs work?
5 parts
Not Enough Glyphs is a spell addon, so the systems worth knowing are glyphs, the Spell Binder and the book covers (threads) that plug into the binder. The sources describe nothing like machines, multiblocks or power networks for this mod.[1]
The Spell Binder
The Spell Binder is an alternative to the spellbook. It doesn't allow on-the-fly spellcrafting, but it can hold up to 25 spells in the form of caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it good for spells you won't ever edit, or for sharing spells without sharing a whole book.[1][3]
You can also dye the binder with any dye, using the Ars Nouveau dye recipe type.[3]
Book covers (threads)
The binder accepts threads, like Ars armor does. Threads made for armor fit inside the binder, but there is no guarantee they work and they might be patched out. The dedicated book threads, called book covers, fill those slots. In this pack the cover recipes listed here are made at the enchanting apparatus.[1][3]
- Focus covers: BlockShaping Focus and Summoning Focus allow glyph combos to trigger on spells cast from the binder. The elemental ones (Air Focus, Earth Focus, Fire Focus, Water Focus) do the same when Ars Elemental is loaded. They don't give you the extra stats of the real focus, but they can unlock special effects and more versatility.[1][3]
- Tradeoff covers: Slow Power slows your spells down but gives a spell power buff. Cheap Damage makes spells a lot cheaper but very weak. The author says stat tuning is likely to happen in the beta phase.[1][3]
- Melee covers: Sharp Pages gives the binder attack damage, and the knockback cover Heavy Cover adds knockback, so the binder can work as a melee weapon.[1][3]
- Other covers: Lucky Cover, Keen Cover and Wheel of Fortune are craftable in the pack, but the sources only give their recipes, not their effects.[3]
The pack changed the enchanting apparatus recipes for the Air, Earth, Fire and Water focus covers, Cheap Damage, Heavy Cover and Slow Power. The other covers use the mod's own recipes. Here are Slow Power, Cheap Damage and Heavy Cover as the pack has them.[3]

Contingencies
Contingencies are inspired by Ars Magica. A contingency stores the spell that comes after it for the duration of the effect, then casts it when its condition occurs. Mana is spent only on the initial cast, and only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode causes an explosion on the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]
The pack includes these contingency glyphs: Glyph Contingency Blink, Glyph Contingency Death, Glyph Contingency Fall, Glyph Contingency Fire, Glyph Contingency Heal, Glyph Contingency Health and Glyph Contingency Time. Here are the recipes for Blink, Death, Fall and Fire.[3]

Augments are mostly shared across contingencies. Split adds one more possible activation before the contingency ends, Extend Time lengthens the effect and Duration Down shortens it. Amplify usually increases the level of the effect, but Fall and Health treat it differently:[4]
- Fall: Amplify increases the fall distance before the trigger by one block, and Dampen decreases it by one block.[4]
- Health: Amplify increases the health threshold by 10%.[4]
Utility glyphs and filters
- Glyph Plow plows dirt and does the other things a hoe does. It was the glyph missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set. Its AOE augment increases the area of effect.[1][3][4]
- Glyph Feed has a Randomize augment that picks a random food instead of the first valid one.[3][4]
- Glyph Filter Light and Glyph Filter Dark are filter glyphs. The sources only give their recipes, so how they decide what passes isn't confirmed.[3]
- The random filter has a base 50% chance of resolving. Amplifying it overall gives 100% minus 50% divided by 2 to the power of the amplification. Dampening it overall gives 50% divided by 2 to the power of the dampening.[4]
The mod also adds Trail, a projectile that resolves the spell along its path several times before expiring, and Plane, a non-repeating version of Linger. Plane can make a following spell AOE, and it can also make circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1]
Repacked glyphs
Many glyphs are ports from older addons: Ray, Chain, RevDirection and most filters from TooManyGlyphs, the vanilla-form propagators and Flatten from Omega, the Arc and Homing projectile forms and their propagators from Elemental, and Filter: Self and Filter: Not Self from Trinkets. A repacked glyph disables itself, along with any custom behavior it has, when the original addon is present.[1]
Homing projectiles seek the nearest entity and behave like a classic projectile when there are no valid targets. They only target players if augmented with Sensitive. Arc projectiles are affected by gravity, and each Pierce makes them bounce one more time when they hit the ground.[4]
Unverified The pack ships no config files for this mod and no in-jar guidebook was found, so tunable values such as mana costs and the final stats of the book covers are not shown in the sources here.
How do you progress through Not Enough Glyphs?
3 parts
Not Enough Glyphs is crafted entirely through Ars Nouveau's crafting types. The Spell Binder and the thread items come from the enchanting apparatus, the glyphs use Ars Nouveau's glyph recipes, and recoloring the binder is a dye recipe. So there's no machine chain to climb. Your progression is about which recipes you unlock and how much each one asks of you.[3]
Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter for this mod, so the order below follows the recipes only, not a questline.
Start with the Spell Binder
Begin with the Spell Binder. It's an enchanting apparatus recipe, and the pack leaves it as the mod's own recipe.[3]
Enchanting apparatus recipe, unchanged by the pack.
If you want to recolor your binder, there's a dye recipe that takes the binder back as its output. The pack leaves this one as the mod's own recipe too.[3]
The dye recipe returns the Spell Binder.
Next: the glyphs
The pack keeps the mod's recipe for every glyph except one, covered below. Here's how they group:[3]
- Light filters: Glyph Filter Light has the simplest recipe in the set, and Glyph Filter Dark is a close sibling.[3]
- Utility glyphs: Glyph Feed, Glyph Plow, Glyph Ride and Glyph Trail.[3]
- Contingency glyphs: Glyph Contingency Blink, Glyph Contingency Death, Glyph Contingency Fall, Glyph Contingency Fire, Glyph Contingency Heal, Glyph Contingency Health and Glyph Contingency Time. They follow the same pattern, with a different trigger item swapped in.[3]
- Glyph Propagate Plane is the glyph the pack changed. Check its recipe before you plan around it.[3]

Finally: the threads
The threads are enchanting apparatus recipes. Their recipe ids sit under the Ars Nouveau namespace, even though the items belong to this mod.[3]
The pack changed these threads: Air Focus, Earth Focus, Fire Focus, Water Focus, Cheap Damage, Heavy Cover and Slow Power. Don't rely on the mod's default recipes for these.[3]
These threads keep the mod's recipe: Lucky Cover, Keen Cover, BlockShaping Focus, Sharp Pages, Summoning Focus and Wheel of Fortune.[3]

How does Not Enough Glyphs work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, every recipe that connects Not Enough Glyphs to other mods runs through Ars Nouveau's crafting. The glyphs are made as Ars Nouveau glyphs, and the Spell Binder and the book threads are made at the Enchanting Apparatus. Ars Elemental comes in through the elemental focus threads.[3]
The Spell Binder
The Spell Binder is built from Ars Nouveau's Novice Spell Book plus a vanilla leather, so you need to be into Ars Nouveau before you can craft it. It's an alternative to the spellbook and can hold up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments.[1][3]
Glyphs
The glyphs are crafted with an Ars Nouveau essence plus a vanilla item or item tag, and the pack leaves most of them as the mod made them. That covers Glyph Feed, Glyph Plow, Glyph Ride, Glyph Trail and the contingency glyphs, from Glyph Contingency Blink to Glyph Contingency Time. The contingency glyphs also use a vanilla repeater.[3]
The exception is Glyph Propagate Plane, which the pack has changed. It uses Ars Nouveau items together with vanilla ones. The sources don't show what the mod's default recipe was, so treat this one as the pack's version.[3]

Book threads and Ars Elemental
The Spell Binder accepts threads, called book covers, and every one of them is crafted at the Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus using Ars Nouveau's Blank Thread.[1][3]
The focus covers let spells cast from the binder trigger glyph combos. BlockShaping Focus and Summoning Focus are built from the matching Ars Nouveau foci, Focus of Block Shaping and Focus of Summoning.[1][3]
The elemental covers, Air Focus, Earth Focus, Fire Focus and Water Focus, are where Ars Elemental comes in. Each one needs the matching lesser focus from that mod, such as Lesser Focus of Air, plus the matching Ars Nouveau essence. The pack has changed all of these recipes.[1][3]
Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)
Recipe id: ars_nouveau:thread_air_focus
The pack's version of the Air Focus cover. The other elemental covers follow the same pattern with their own element.
The stat covers Slow Power and Cheap Damage are pack-changed too. Slow Power slows down your spells but gives a spell power buff, while Cheap Damage makes them a lot cheaper but very weak. Heavy Cover is also changed. These recipes mix Ars Nouveau items with vanilla materials, so check the recipe viewer for the exact in-pack version.[1][3]
