Starbunclemania is a mod in All the Mods 10 8.3, where it is version 1.5.9. Expand Ars Nouveau's Starbuncles with new jobs! Also adds liquified Source. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Starbunclemania?

2 parts

Starbunclemania is part of the pack in version 1.5.7, and it has been here since All the Mods 10 3.0 or earlier. In this pack, the part of it that the sources show you using is the Source Condenser, a bridge between Source magic and the pack's fluid-based machines.[1]

Why you need it

The Runic Crucible needs Source to work, but the pack has no Source Hatches to feed it. The Source Condenser is the pack's answer: it turns Source into a liquid, and Fluid Hatches can handle that.[2]

The setup is simple. Place a Source Jar with some Source in it next to the Source Condenser, and it converts that Source into Liquefied Source.[2]

Where it fits in progression

You meet the condenser in the Forbidden & Arcanus quest chapter, in the quest "Source Condensation" quest. It unlocks after the Tier 5 Forge quest, so expect it to matter in the mid-to-late part of your run. The quest's tasks are to get the Source Condenser and a bucket of Source fluid (Source Fluid Bucket).[2]

Unverified The sources don't describe any other Starbunclemania features or recipes, so this page covers only the Source Condenser's role in the pack.

How do you get started with Starbunclemania?

4 parts

Starbunclemania is all about giving your Starbuncles new jobs. Most of its items change what a Starbuncle does, such as moving fluids, moving energy, voiding items, placing blocks or mining. In this pack the first thing to get is the Fluid Jar, because the other fluid items build on it.[3]

Step one: make a Fluid Jar

The Fluid Containment Jar comes first. The pack changed its recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[4]

You can also place a Wixie on a Fluid Jar to make the Wixie Mixer. The jar is used in the recipe for the Glyph Pickup Fluid glyph too, shown below.[3][4]

Glyph (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: starbunclemania:glyph_pickup_fluid

The glyph picks up fluids from the world and fills a tank in the hotbar or next to the turret.

Step two: make a Source Condenser

The pack uses the Source Condenser to get Source into a form that Fluid Hatches can handle. The Runic Crucible needs Source, and this pack has no Source Hatches to supply it. Place a Source Jar with some Source next to the condenser and it turns the Source into Liquefied Source. The quest "Source Condensation" quest covers this, and in the Forbidden & Arcanus chapter it comes after Tier 5 Forge.[2]

The pack also has a Create mixing recipe that produces the Source fluid. The pack changed this one too.[4]

Next: make a Starbucket

The Starbucket changes a Starbuncle's job to carrying fluids around. It's made at an Enchanting Apparatus, and the Fluid Jar you already have goes into it.[3][4]

Step four: pick your other Starbuncle jobs

Once fluids work, add the other job items as you need them. These have recipes the pack changed:[4]

  • StarbAttery makes a Starbuncle transport FE energy.[3][4]
  • StarBin makes a Starbuncle void the items it picks up and the items from linked chests.[3][4]
  • Starbuilder makes a Starbuncle place blocks in specified spots.[3][4]
  • Starminer makes a Starbuncle mine blocks in specified spots. You can give it a tool, and it defaults to an iron pick.[3][4]

Tip: The Starbucket, StarbAttery, StarBin, Starbuilder and Starminer can all be used as a plain cosmetic by sneaking while using them. This doesn't change the Starbuncle's current behavior.[3]

How does Starbunclemania work?

5 parts

Starbunclemania is built around one idea: you give a familiar a piece of headwear, and that changes what it does. What the sources describe are familiar jobs, Wixie workstations, and some fluid and Source items, not big multiblocks or standalone machines. Here is how each part works in this pack.[3]

Tip: Every job item can also be used as a plain cosmetic. Sneak while using it and the familiar keeps its current behavior.[3]

Starbuncle job items

Each of these changes a starbuncle's job. Here is what the tooltips say about them.[3]

  • Starbucket makes the starbuncle transport fluids around.[3]
  • StarbAttery makes it transport FE energy around.[3]
  • Starballoon makes it transport Mekanism chemical around. It can be dyed, and it supports Starbuncle, Drygmy and Wixie familiars.[3]
  • Starbuilder makes it place blocks in specified spots.[3][4]
  • Starminer makes it mine blocks in specified spots. You can give it a tool to use, and it defaults to an iron pick.[3][4]
  • StarBin makes it void the items it picks up, and items from linked chests.[3][4]
  • Square Robin Mask tweaks the starbuncle's item transport to round-robin items between inventories, and it also stops pickup.[3][4]

The pack changed the crafting recipes for the StarbAttery, the StarBin, the Starbuilder and the Starminer, so don't trust the mod's default recipes for those. The recipes below are the in-pack ones.[4]

There are also Fluid Scroll: Allow and Fluid Scroll: Deny. Each has a recipe that clears the scroll back to blank, and the pack does not change those recipes. The sources don't explain how the scrolls are applied, so I'm leaving out the details.[4]

Wixie workstations

Using a Wixie Charm on certain blocks changes which recipes your Wixie works with. These are the options the tooltips describe.[3]

  • Furnace: the Wixie uses smelting and smoking recipes.[3]
  • Stonecutter: the Wixie uses stonecutter recipes.[3]
  • Cutting Board: the Wixie uses cutting board recipes.[3]
  • Cooking Pot: the Wixie uses cooking pot recipes.[3]
  • Crucible: the Wixie uses Eidolon's crucible recipes.[3]
  • Fluid Containment Jar: the Wixie uses the milk and water in the side tanks for crafting recipes instead of buckets. The advancement text calls this the Wixie Mixer.[3]

The Fluid Jar recipe was changed by the pack, so check the in-pack version here.[4]

Source and fluid handling

The Source Condenser and the Fluid Sourcelink each have their own recipe. The Source Condenser is made from a Source Relay and a Fluid Jar. The sources don't describe exactly how either one behaves, so I'm not going to guess.[4]

Fluid spell glyphs

The mod adds fluid glyphs for your spells. Glyph Pickup Fluid picks up fluids from the world and fills a tank in your hotbar or next to the turret. Glyph Place Fluid places fluid in the world, draining from a tank in your hotbar or next to the turret.[3][4]

Both glyphs accept several augments. AOE increases the radius of targeted blocks, Pierce increases the depth, and Randomize adds a chance to not target a block. Sensitive on the pickup glyph targets the block hit directly instead of the relative position. On the place glyph, it places the fluid inside the block hit instead of relative to it.[3]

How do you progress through Starbunclemania?

3 parts

In this pack's quest book, Starbunclemania shows up in one place: the quest "Source Condensation" quest in the Forbidden & Arcanus chapter. It comes after Tier 5 Forge, so that is the point where the mod enters your progression.[2]

The Source Condensation quest

The quest has two tasks: get a Source Condenser and a Source fluid bucket. The reason is that the Runic Crucible needs Source to work, and the pack has no Source Hatches to supply it.[2]

The Source Condenser is the pack's workaround. Place a Source Jar with some Source next to the condenser and it converts that Source into Liquefied Source, which Fluid Hatches can handle.[2]

This is the item the quest asks for.

The condenser needs a Fluid Containment Jar, and the pack has changed that jar's recipe from the mod's default. Use this one.[4]

How does Starbunclemania work with other mods?

4 parts

In this pack, Starbunclemania is closely tied to Ars Nouveau. Every recipe of the mod that uses another mod's items takes at least one Ars Nouveau item, and one also uses a Source fluid bucket from another mod. The result is a bridge between Source magic and fluids.[4]

Source and fluids

The main chain starts with the Fluid Containment Jar. The pack changed this recipe, so don't assume it matches the mod's default. The recipe below is the in-pack one, and it is where the Cascading Archwood Log comes in.[4]

Quest tie-in: Source Condensation

The quest "Source Condensation" quest sits in the Forbidden & Arcanus chapter and unlocks after Tier 5 Forge. Its tasks are the Source Condenser and the Source fluid bucket. The quest text says the Runic Crucible needs Source, but there are no Source Hatches to supply it. Instead, you place a Source Jar holding some Source next to the Source Condenser. It converts the Source into Liquefied Source, which Fluid Hatches can handle.[2]

Scrolls and glyphs

The filter scrolls also lean on Ars Nouveau. Fluid Scroll: Allow and Fluid Scroll: Deny both start from Blank Parchment and Water Essence. The Direction Scroll also uses Blank Parchment.[4]

The cosmetic items each have a recipe that includes an Ars Nouveau item: Alakakrinos Hat, Drygmy Horns, Sea Bunny, Blues Hat, Starby Ears, Whirli Propeller and Square Robin Mask. The Starballoon is made at an Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus instead of a crafting table.[4]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Starbunclemania?

1 part

In this pack, the mod shows up in just one quest, in the Forbidden & Arcanus chapter. It's a short story, but it unlocks a neat workaround.[2]

Source Condensation

"Source Condensation" quest comes after the Tier 5 Forge quest, so you'll get to it once you've made progress there. It has two tasks: get hold of the Source Condenser, and get a Source fluid bucket.[2]

Here's why it matters. The Runic Crucible needs Source to work, but the pack has no Source Hatches to feed it. The quest's answer is to turn that Source into a liquid with the Source Condenser, so ordinary Fluid Hatches can handle it.[2]

Setup is simple: place a Source Jar with some Source in it next to the Source Condenser, and it converts that Source into Liquefied Source.[2]

Tip: Don't go looking for Source Hatches for the Runic Crucible. The quest says to use the Source Condenser and Fluid Hatches instead.[2]

What changed in Starbunclemania between versions?

Starbunclemania has been in All the Mods 10 since the 3.0 release, and All the Mods 10 8.1 ships version 1.5.7. The pack changelogs only record version bumps for this mod, so here is the update path.[1][5]

  • All the Mods 10 3.0: Starbunclemania was added at version 1.4.0.0.[5]
  • All the Mods 10 4.0: updated from 1.4.0.0 to 1.4.0.1.[6]
  • All the Mods 10 4.11: updated from 1.4.0.1 to 1.5.1.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 5.1: updated from 1.5.1 to 1.5.2.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 5.5: updated from 1.5.2 to 1.5.3.[9]
  • All the Mods 10 6.0: updated from 1.5.3 to 1.5.6.[10]
  • All the Mods 10 7.1: updated from 1.5.6 to 1.5.7, the version still used in 8.1.[1][11]

Unverified What actually changed inside the mod between these versions (new features, fixes or balance changes) is unverified. The pack changelogs only list the version numbers, and there are no stored changelogs for the shipped jars. Check the mod's own release notes if you need the details.
