What is Ars Nouveau?
1 part
Ars Nouveau is a magic mod inspired by Ars Magicka where you build your own spells instead of picking from a fixed list. You combine glyphs into custom spells, craft magical artifacts and trinkets, perform rituals, power magical machines, and put adorable magical servants to work automating your base.[1]
It's a great pick if you enjoy systems you can tinker with: the spell you want probably isn't in the mod already, but the pieces to build it are. If you'd rather press a button and get a result, this one asks more of you up front and pays it back later.[1]
This pack ships Ars Nouveau 5.0.12, and the mod has been part of the pack since at least version 0.42.[2]
Where it fits in the pack
Ars Nouveau gets its own quest chapter, and the spine of it is the spell book upgrade path: you start with the Novice Spell Book in a quest in "?", move up to the Mage's Spell Book in a quest in "?", and finish at the Archmage Spell Book in a quest in "?".[3]
Alongside that spine, the chapter walks you through the workshop blocks and the resources that feed everything else.[3]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Dowsing Rod.[3]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Scribe's Table, where you make spells into something you can use.[3]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Imbuement Chamber, which then unlocks a quest in "?" for the Source Gem and a quest in "?" for the Source Jar.[3]
From there the chapter fans out into a long list of individual glyph quests, one per glyph, grouped into tiers behind different parent quests. Those are your shopping list for spellcrafting rather than a strict order to follow.[3]
How do you get started with Ars Nouveau?
5 parts
Ars Nouveau documents itself entirely in game, so your real starting item is the Worn Notebook: it opens a Patchouli guide that walks you through the mod step by step, and the book itself recommends following each section in order.[1][7]
The pack's quest chapter follows roughly the same path, so if you just work down the quests you will end up with a working setup. Here is that order, with the in-pack recipes attached.[3]
Step one: the Novice Spell Book
The chapter opens with a quest in "?", which asks for a Novice Spell Book. Everything else in the mod hangs off having a book to cast from, so make this first.[3]
Step two: Imbuement Chamber and your first Source Gems
Next come three quests that unlock together: the Imbuement Chamber in a quest in "?", the Scribe's Table in a quest in "?", and the Dowsing Rod in a quest in "?". Build the Imbuement Chamber first, because it is what turns amethyst shards into Source Gem, the resource everything later needs.[3][8]

Step three: Source Jar and Sourcestone
Once you have Source Gems, a quest in "?" wants a Source Jar and a quest in "?" wants Sourcestone. The jar is your Source storage, and Sourcestone is the building block for the machines in the next step.[3][8]
Step four: Arcane Pedestal, Arcane Core and Enchanting Apparatus
Sourcestone unlocks a quest in "?" for the Arcane Pedestal, and that in turn unlocks a quest in "?", which asks for both the Enchanting Apparatus and the Arcane Core. This is the setup you will use for most later crafts, so it is worth rushing.[3]

Where to go from there
- The Source Jar quest branches into the sourcelinks: Agronomic Sourcelink, Vitalic Sourcelink, Volcanic Sourcelink and Mycelial Sourcelink, plus the Potion Jar and then the Alchemical Sourcelink.[3]
- The Arcane Pedestal also unlocks a quest in "?" for the Ritual Brazier, which is the gateway to the whole ritual tree.[3]
- Dozens of glyph quests sit alongside this chain, so expect a long shopping list once the Enchanting Apparatus is running.[3]
- Book upgrades come later: a quest in "?" for the Mage's Spell Book and a quest in "?" for the Archmage Spell Book.[3]

How does Ars Nouveau work?
7 parts
Ars Nouveau is built around crafting your own spells, making artifacts, performing rituals, powering magical machines and automating your base with magical servants. Nearly all of its documentation lives in-game in a Patchouli book, so the Worn Notebook is your real wiki while you play.[1]
One pack detail to know up front: the book is not handed to you when you log in, because the pack leaves the login book option turned off. Craft the notebook yourself and keep it on your hotbar.[1][9]
Mana and casting
Your personal casting resource is mana, and this pack runs the default tuning. The values below are the ones the server config actually uses, so you can work out exactly how much a spell book upgrade or a bauble buys you.[10]
- Base pool is 100 mana, with a base regen value of 5 (the config measures regen in seconds).[10]
- Every glyph you know adds up to 15 max mana and 0.33 regen, so a fat glyph collection is a real mana upgrade.[10]
- Your spell book's tier adds up to 50 max mana and 1 regen.[10]
- Mana Boost gives 25 max mana per level, and the mana regen enchantment gives 2 mana per second per level.[10]
- Max mana and regen are recalculated every 5 ticks, so buffs take a moment to show on the bar.[10]
- Infinite spell crafting is a beta feature and the pack keeps it disabled; if you ever turn it on, the extra glyph cap is 30.[10]
Source: the power system
Source is the mod's version of power, and it lives in jars rather than cables. Once you have a jar of Source and an Enchanting Apparatus, you can start enchanting items, which is the first real use most players find for it.[7]
Source is produced by sourcelinks, blocks that turn some other activity into Source. Two of the cheapest ones are craftable on a normal crafting table in this pack.[8]

Apparatus crafting
Big Ars Nouveau recipes are not made in a GUI grid; you build them on the floor out of the mod's crafting furniture. The Arcane Pedestal is the standard piece, and the Arcane Platform is the flexible one: it can be placed in any direction and used in place of a pedestal, which is perfect for ceilings, walls or tucking a setup into a tight room.[7]

Magical servants and automation
Instead of machines with item pipes, most Ars Nouveau automation is done by summoned creatures that carry, farm and collect for you.[1]
- Drygmys collect mob drops by channelling nearby creatures. In this pack a drygmy must channel 20 times before it produces loot, makes 1 item per cycle as a base, gets 2 bonus items per unique mob nearby, and caps its per-entity bonus at 5 items.[9]
- Each drygmy generation costs 1,000 Source, so plan on a proper sourcelink or two feeding the jar next to it.[9]
- Whirlisprigs need 250 progress accumulated before they create resources, and consume 250 mana per generation.[9]
- Starbuncles are your item couriers, and they can push items into other blocks the same way a hopper or a pipe would.[11]
- Bookwyrms extend the Storage Lectern: each bookwyrm lets the lectern reach 8 more inventories.[9]
- As a familiar, a bookwyrm instead acts as a magnet, picking up items and experience orbs within 5 blocks of you, though it ignores items you throw yourself.[7]
Potion machines
The potion side of the mod is a small machine chain of its own: Potion Jars store brews, the Potion Melder combines them, the Potion Diffuser applies them to an area, and Potion Flasks carry them for you.[7]
- A melder draws 200 potion from each input jar per cycle, where 100 equals one potion.[9]
- It outputs 100 per cycle, meaning one potion out for two potions' worth in from each side.[9]
- Each melder cycle also costs 300 Source, so it wants a Source supply as well as inputs.[9]
- The enchanted flask's potion level cap is left at 255 in this pack, so it is effectively not a limit you will hit normally.[9]
Containment jars and Occultism spirits
This pack ships the Occultism integration for Ars Nouveau, which adds compatibility between the two mods plus a pile of quality of life changes.[4]
The headline feature is putting Occultism spirits inside Containment Jars. Jarred spirits keep their original behaviour and stop decaying, which makes them excellent permanent automation.[11]
- A spirit jar automatically picks up matching items in a 7x7 area centred on itself, using the spirit's own filter, a crushing spirit grabs any ore it can process.[11]
- You can also push items in with a hopper, with starbuncles, or with any pipe, or just right-click an item onto the jar.[11]
- Spirits behave as normal inside the jar, so a Crusher Spirit processes items and flings the output out to one side.[11]
- Janitor Spirits in jars get a special behaviour: they pick up nearby items and push them into the inventory next to the jar.[11]
Turrets, runes and glyph storage
Spell Turrets and Runes let your spells run without you, and a few glyphs are written specifically for that. Blink is the standout: a turret or rune can warp entities using Warp Scrolls pulled from an adjacent inventory, and the scroll is not consumed, so one scroll runs a permanent mob teleporter.[7]

The Annotated Codex is how you record glyphs to move or share them. In this pack a codex costs 10 per glyph stored.[7][10]
How do you progress through Ars Nouveau?
6 parts
The pack's quest chapter for this mod lays the whole mod out as one dependency tree, so the fastest way to progress is simply to follow it from the top. You start with a spell book, branch into your first crafting blocks, unlock Source production, and then open up the Enchanting Apparatus and ritual tiers that carry you to the end of the mod.[3]
Spell book tiers
Spell books are the clearest tier ladder here. The chapter opens with a quest for the Novice Spell Book, which unlocks the quest for the Mage's Spell Book, which in turn unlocks the Archmage Spell Book quest. Each step is an upgrade recipe rather than a fresh craft, so you carry the same book forward.[3][8]

Tier 3 book upgrade
Early tier: first blocks and Source
Three quests sit side by side as your opening kit: the Dowsing Rod, the Scribe's Table and the Imbuement Chamber. The Imbuement Chamber is the one that gates the rest of the tree, because the Source Gem quest comes straight after it.[3]
Source Gem, made in the Imbuement Chamber
Source Gems then split the tree in two. One side is the Source Jar quest, and the other is the Sourcestone quest that leads to all the machinery.[3]
Source generation tier
Once you have the Source Jar quest done, four sourcelink quests open at the same time, so you can pick whichever fuel you have most of.[3]
- Volcanic Sourcelink, Vitalic Sourcelink, Agronomic Sourcelink and Mycelial Sourcelink all unlock directly from the Source Jar quest.[3]
- The Potion Jar quest also follows the Source Jar, and it gates the Alchemical Sourcelink quest behind it.[3]
Apparatus tier
On the Sourcestone side, the Arcane Pedestal quest comes first, and it unlocks a combined quest for the Enchanting Apparatus and the Arcane Core. This is the biggest unlock in the chapter.[3]

With the Apparatus done, a whole shelf of gear quests opens at once: the Enchanter's Wand, Dominion Wand, Enchanter's Sword, Enchanter's Shield, Enchanter's Mirror, Enchanter's Bow, the discount rings, the mana amulets, the belts, the light and voiding jars, and the Magebloom Seed.[3]
- The Dominion Wand quest is the gate for all the familiar charms: Starbuncle Charm, Drygmy Charm, Whirlisprig Charm, Wixie Charm and the Amethyst Golem Charm.[3]
- Magebloom runs its own short chain: Magebloom Seed into Magebloom Fiber, then Spell Parchment, then Runic Chalk.[3]
Ritual tier
The Ritual Brazier quest also branches off the Arcane Pedestal, and every ritual quest in the chapter hangs off it, including Awakening, Flight, Warping, Scrying and Summon Wilden. You can build the brazier before you finish the Apparatus gear, so it is worth grabbing early.[3]

Glyph branches
Glyphs are not one long line. The chapter splits them into three separate branches, each hanging off its own parent node, and every glyph inside a branch unlocks in parallel. That matches the in-game guide, which has its own entries for tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 spells.[3][13][14][15]
The smallest branch holds the heavy hitters like Glyph Wither, Glyph Hex, Glyph Blink, Glyph Orbit and the summon glyphs for vexes, decoys and undead, so treat that group as your late-game goal.[3]
Unverified Which of the three quest-book glyph branches maps to tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 in the in-game guide is not something the available pack files spell out.
How does Ars Nouveau work with other mods?
4 parts
Ars Nouveau connects to the rest of the pack in two main ways. Addon mods, mainly Ars Additions and Ars Elemental, build their items on top of Ars Nouveau's crafting stations and materials. The pack also adds its own sawing recipes so archwood works with the sawmill machines from other mods.[8]
Sawing archwood (Mekanism and Productive Trees)
The pack adds two recipes that process archwood logs into Archwood Planks and sawdust. One runs in Mekanism's sawing machine and gives Sawdust. The other runs in the Productive Trees sawmill and involves Sawdust. Both are pack-added, not part of the original mods.[8]

Ars Additions
Ars Additions leans heavily on Ars Nouveau. Several of its items are crafted at the Enchanting Apparatus, and the pack has changed some of those recipes.[8]
- Advanced Dominion Wand is an Enchanting Apparatus upgrade of the Dominion Wand. The pack changed this recipe.[8]
- Jar of Miner's Wisdom is also made at the Enchanting Apparatus, with a pack-changed recipe.[8]
- Source Spawner, Unstable Reliquary, Ender Source Jar, Charm of Void's Salvation and Warp Index use Enchanting Apparatus recipes that the pack leaves as the mod's own.[8]
- The chains and lanterns (Archwood Chain, Sourcestone Chain, Archwood Lantern, Sourcestone Lantern and the magelight lantern variants such as Magelight Lantern) all have pack-changed recipes that mix Ars Nouveau materials with common tag items.[8]
- Sourcestone building blocks like Sourcestone Door, Sourcestone Wall and Polished Sourcestone Trapdoor come from Sourcestone and Smooth Sourcestone. The stonecutter also turns Sourcestone into cracked variants such as Cracked Sourcestone, and crafting recipes turn those back.[8]
- The glyphs Glyph Mark and Glyph Recall, and the Locate Structure ritual item, are crafted from Ars Nouveau items such as essences, the Containment ritual and the Vexing Archwood Log.[8]

Ars Elemental
Ars Elemental uses Ars Nouveau's elemental essences and several of its crafting stations. The Imbuement Chamber recipe type makes the Arc Prism Lens, Acceleration Prism Lens, Deceleration Prism Lens, Air Infused Turret and Earth Infused Turret. The Advanced Spell Prism is a normal crafting recipe built on the Spell Prism.[8]
The elemental armor sets use their own armor upgrade recipe type, and the pack changed those recipes. The dump shows this for the Aethermancer, Aquamancer and Geomancer sets, for example Aethermancer's Boots, Aquamancer's Hat and Geomancer's Leggings. It also shows it for Pyromancer pieces such as Pyromancer's Boots. The pack also changed the recipes for Enchanter's Bangle, Spellcaster Bag and Slipstream Current Elevator. The elemental bangles built on the base bangle, such as Fire Bangle, are Enchanting Apparatus recipes, and the dump lists them as unchanged.[8]

Other connections
The in-game guide also has an entry for Ars Ocultas, described as Occultism integration for Ars Nouveau with compatibility changes and quality-of-life tweaks. The sources here show no in-pack recipes for it.[4]
Unverified The quest chapter available for this section is truncated, and the visible quests only ask for Ars Nouveau items. So it is unconfirmed whether any quest ties Ars Nouveau to items from another mod.
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Ars Nouveau?
6 parts
All the quests for this mod sit in a single chapter called ars_nouveau. None of them has a title, so they're identified by the item each one asks for. Nearly every quest asks for one item, and a few ask for two. Below they're grouped in the order they unlock. The first spell book quest, the first workstation quests and the three glyph groups unlock after quests that aren't part of this chapter's list.[3]
Spell books
The book line is a simple three-step chain. First comes a quest in "?" for the Novice Spell Book. It unlocks a quest in "?" for the Mage's Spell Book, which in turn unlocks a quest in "?" for the Archmage Spell Book.[3]
Workstations and Source
Three quests unlock together after the same earlier quest: a quest in "?" (Dowsing Rod), a quest in "?" (Scribe's Table) and a quest in "?" (Imbuement Chamber).[3]
The Imbuement Chamber quest leads on to a quest in "?" for the Source Gem. That opens two paths: a quest in "?" for the Source Jar and a quest in "?" for Sourcestone.[3]
Sourcelinks
The Source Jar quest unlocks four sourcelink quests: a quest in "?" (Volcanic Sourcelink), a quest in "?" (Vitalic Sourcelink), a quest in "?" (Agronomic Sourcelink) and a quest in "?" (Mycelial Sourcelink). It also unlocks a quest in "?" for the Potion Jar, and that one leads to a quest in "?" for the Alchemical Sourcelink.[3]
Pedestal, apparatus and gear
The Sourcestone quest unlocks a quest in "?" for the Arcane Pedestal. From there you get a quest in "?", which asks for both the Enchanting Apparatus and the Arcane Core. The Arcane Pedestal quest also unlocks the ritual branch below.[3]
The Enchanting Apparatus quest opens a wide set of quests, all available once it's done:[3]
- a quest in "?": Belt of Unstable Gifts[3]
- a quest in "?": both the Ring of Lesser Discount and the Ring of Greater Discount[3]
- a quest in "?": Enchanter's Wand[3]
- a quest in "?": Enchanter's Sword[3]
- a quest in "?": Enchanter's Shield[3]
- a quest in "?": Belt of Levitation[3]
- a quest in "?": Enchanter's Bow[3]
- a quest in "?": Enchanter's Mirror[3]
- a quest in "?": both the Amulet of Mana Boost and the Amulet of Mana Regen[3]
- a quest in "?": both the Jar of Light and the Jar of Voiding[3]
- a quest in "?": Magebloom Seed[3]
- a quest in "?": Dominion Wand[3]
Two of those lead further. The Magebloom Seed quest leads to a quest in "?" (Magebloom Fiber), then a quest in "?" (Spell Parchment), then a quest in "?" (Runic Chalk). The Dominion Wand quest unlocks the familiar charms: a quest in "?" (Starbuncle Charm), a quest in "?" (Wixie Charm), a quest in "?" (Whirlisprig Charm), a quest in "?" (Drygmy Charm) and a quest in "?" (Amethyst Golem Charm).[3]
Rituals
a quest in "?" asks for the Ritual Brazier and unlocks every ritual quest. Each of these asks for one ritual item:[3]
- a quest in "?" (Overgrowth), a quest in "?" (Fertility), a quest in "?" (Awakening), a quest in "?" (Warping) and a quest in "?" (Restoration)[3]
- a quest in "?" (Scrying), a quest in "?" (Summon Wilden), a quest in "?" (Moonfall), a quest in "?" (Disintegration) and a quest in "?" (Sunrise)[3]
- a quest in "?" (Burrowing), a quest in "?" (Cloudshaping), a quest in "?" (Binding), a quest in "?" (Challenge) and a quest in "?" (Flight)[3]
Glyphs
The glyph quests make up most of the chapter. Each asks for one glyph item, and they split into three groups depending on which earlier quest unlocks them. Those earlier quests aren't in this chapter's list.[3]
- First group, part 1: a quest in "?" (Glyph Harm), a quest in "?" (Glyph Leap), a quest in "?" (Glyph Dispel), a quest in "?" (Glyph Amplify), a quest in "?" (Glyph Craft), a quest in "?" (Glyph Bounce), a quest in "?" (Glyph Summon Steed)[3]
- First group, part 2: a quest in "?" (Glyph Break), a quest in "?" (Glyph Pickup), a quest in "?" (Glyph Toss), a quest in "?" (Glyph Interact), a quest in "?" (Glyph Sensitive), a quest in "?" (Glyph Phantom Block), a quest in "?" (Glyph Place Block)[3]

Which Ars Nouveau config options matter?
6 parts
Ars Nouveau has a lot of config files, so here are the options you're most likely to care about and exactly how this pack sets them. I'm showing the values as the pack has them. The sources I have don't list the mod's own defaults, so I can't tell you which of these the pack changed.[9][10]
Mana
Mana is set in the server config. Base max mana is mana.baseMax = 100 and base regen is mana.baseRegen = 5. On top of that, each glyph adds mana.glyphmax = 15 max mana and mana.glyphRegen = 0.33 regen.[10]
- Book tier bonuses: mana.tierMax = 50 max mana and mana.tierRegen = 1 regen.[10]
- Each level of Mana Boost gives 25 (mana.manaBoost), and each level of the regen enchantment gives 2 per second (mana.manaRegenEnchantment).[10]
- Potions give 10 regen per level through mana.potionRegen, which lives in the startup config.[16]
- Max mana and regen are recalculated every 5 ticks (mana.updateInterval).[10]
Spell limits
Both spell_casting.enforceCapOnCast and spell_casting.enforceGlyphLimitOnCast are true, so augment caps and per-spell glyph limits are enforced when a spell is cast. The beta feature beta.infiniteSpells is off, and the codex costs 10 per glyph (item.codexCost).[10]
Most glyphs have a per-spell limit of 2,147,483,647, which is effectively no limit. The exceptions in the files I can see are listed below.[17][18]
- Burst is the strictest glyph here: cost 500, tier 3, and only 1 per spell (general.per_spell_limit). It can't be combined with the Wall or Linger glyphs (general.invalid_combos).[18]
- Break is a starter glyph (general.starter) with cost 10, and Fortune can be applied at most 4 times to it (general.augment_limits).[19]
- Amplify is capped at 2 on Cold Snap, Crush, Cut and Explosion, and AOE is capped at 1 on Cold Snap. Look at each glyph's general.augment_limits entry before planning a big spell.[20][21][22][23]
Glyph costs and damage
- Augment costs: Amplify is 20, Accelerate is 10 and AOE is 35.[17][24][25]
- Cut (general.cost) and Dampen (general.cost) cost 0, and so does Delay, which has a base duration of 20 ticks.[22][26][27]
- Damage values: Cut deals 1, Crush deals 3 and Cold Snap deals 6.[20][21][22]
- Explosion costs 200, with base intensity 0.75, AOE bonus 1.5 and 2.5 extra damage per Amplify.[23]
- Blink costs 50 and has a base teleport distance of 8 (general.distance). Animate Block costs 200 with a base duration of 60 seconds.[28][29]
Machines and familiars
- Drygmys produce 1 base item per cycle, use 1,000 source per generation, need 20 channels before they produce loot, and get up to 5 bonus items from nearby entities plus 2 per unique mob (drygmy_production.drygmyBaseItems, drygmy_production.drygmyManaCost, drygmy_production.drygmyMaxProgress, drygmy_production.drygmyQuantityCap, drygmy_production.drygmyUniqueBonus).[9]
- Whirlisprigs need 250 progress (general.whirlisprigProgress) and the sylph mana cost is 250 (general.sylphManaCost).[9]
- The potion melder takes 200 potion from each input jar, outputs 100 per cycle (100 equals 1 potion) and uses 300 source per cycle.[9]
- One bookwyrm supports 8 inventories on a lectern (general.bookwyrmLimit), and the Ring of Jumping uses 30 mana per jump (item.jumpRingCost).[9]
World and mobs
Warp portals are enabled (warp_portals.enableWarpPortals). The Wilden Hunter, Stalker and Defender do not attack animals, and the Wilden Chimera dive bomb does destroy blocks (general.destructiveDiveBomb). Caster Tomes can spawn in dungeon loot, and the starter book is not given on login (general.spawnBook = false).[9][10]
