What is Advanced Peripherals?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Advanced Peripherals adds a set of extra peripherals and turtle upgrades for ComputerCraft-style computers. The pack includes version 0.8.0a. The in-game manual describes the peripherals as a way to interact with other mods, players, the world and the game chat.[1][2][3]

It's for you if you like programming. The blocks all work by connecting them to a computer, and the turtle features rely on CC:Tweaked's turtle fuel rules. If you never touch computers or turtles, you can safely skip this mod.[4][5][6]

What you get

  • Information blocks: the Block Reader reads blocks and tile entities in front of it, the Environment Detector reports things like time, moon phase and light level, the Geo Scanner scans blocks and the chunk around it, and the Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range.[4][7][8][9]
  • Chat and energy: the Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages, and the Energy Detector measures energy flow and can limit it like a resistor.[5][10]
  • Mod bridges: the ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2, the RS Bridge talks to Refined Storage, and the Colony Integrator works with a MineColonies colony.[11][12][13]
  • Player inventory access: the Inventory Manager communicates with a player's inventory using a Memory Card that you assign to yourself.[14][15]
  • Pocket computer upgrades for the Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box. These don't support the associated events.[16]

Turtle upgrades

The Weak Automata Core turns a turtle into a more capable automaton. It can dig, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge the turtle from an RF item. It's also the starting point for two advanced variants: the End Automata Core adds limited world-bound teleportation, and the Husbandry Automata Core lets the turtle interact with animals.[17][18][19]

Combining any automata core with a nether star gives an overpowered version that doesn't use item durability. The catch is that it breaks immediately if you use it without enough fuel. The Chunk Controller is a separate ingredient that makes a turtle chunk-loading.[20][21]

Tip: Automata operations use turtle fuel and have cooldowns. A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown, but fuel cost grows faster than the cooldown drops, so don't crank it up without checking the numbers.[6]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests in this pack that involve the mod, or any place for it on the ATM Star path. Treat it as an optional mod for players who enjoy automation with computers.

How do you get started with Advanced Peripherals?

5 parts

Advanced Peripherals adds blocks you connect to a computer so your code can talk to the world, to players, to chat and to other mods. It also adds upgrades that turn turtles into much more capable machines. Here's the order I'd tackle it in.[2][3][22]

Step 1: Make the Peripheral Casing

The Peripheral Casing is an ingredient in most of the mod's blocks, and its tooltip describes it as a crafting ingredient. Make a few before anything else. This is the recipe in the pack:[23][24]

Step 2: Pick a cheap first peripheral

Connect each peripheral to a computer, then use it from code. Start with something simple that gives you quick feedback. The Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range, and it also recognizes the player who clicks on it.[9][23]

Tip: The Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box also come as pocket computer upgrades. You combine them with a pocket computer, but you can't use the associated events that way.[16]

Step 3: Add utility blocks as you need them

  • Energy Detector: detects energy flow and acts as a resistor, so you can set a max flow rate.[10]
  • Block Reader: reads data of the block or tile entity in front of it, which helps with blocks that have no computer support.[4][23][24]
  • Geo Scanner: scans the blocks around it and the chunk it sits in. It has a delay between scans, so plan your code around that.[8]
  • Inventory Manager: works with a player's inventory. Right click with a Memory Card in hand to assign it to yourself, then put the card into the manager.[14][15]

Step 4: Storage and colony bridges (changed by the pack)

The recipes for these blocks are changed by the pack, so they differ from the mod's own versions. The ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2 and uses one channel. The RS Bridge talks to Refined Storage. The Colony Integrator talks to MineColonies and has to be connected to a computer in the area of your village. Check the recipes below, because they use items from those other mods.[11][12][13][23]

Step 5: Upgrade your turtles

Once you're comfortable with peripherals, make the Weak Automata Core. It's a turtle upgrade that lets a turtle dig, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge itself from an RF item.[17][23]

The weak core is only the start. Feed it 10 endermans to get the End Automata Core, which adds limited teleportation. Feed it 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep to get the Husbandry Automata Core, which lets you interact with animals. Stored teleport points and stored animals are lost if the turtle is broken.[17][18][19][23]

Watch out: World-changing core operations use turtle fuel, unless fuel usage is disabled in the CC:Tweaked configuration. Most of them also have cooldowns, so build that into your code.[6]

Combining any core with a nether star gives an overpowered version, which doesn't use up item durability. The catch is that if you use it without enough fuel, the upgrade breaks immediately.[20][23]

Tip: You can skip the Computer Tool for now. The mod's own guide says it's currently useless.[24][25]

How does Advanced Peripherals work?

10 parts

Advanced Peripherals is built around ComputerCraft: you place a peripheral block, connect it to a computer, and your code reads from it or controls it. The mod also adds turtle upgrades called automata cores. This section covers how both of these systems work.[2][3][26]

The shared base: Peripheral Casing

Most of the peripherals are crafted around the Peripheral Casing. Make a few of them before you start building.[23]

Peripherals you connect to a computer

Each of these blocks has to be connected to a computer before it does anything. Here is what each one does, as far as the in-game guide explains it.[4][5][7][8][9][10][11][12][14][27]

  • Block Reader reads the data of the block or tile entity in front of it. Connect it to a computer and point it at the target block.[4][23]
  • Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages. If a message starts with a $, it is only visible to the Chat Box.[5]
  • Energy Detector detects energy flow and acts as a resistor. You can set a maximum flow rate to limit how much passes through.[10]
  • Environment Detector reports environment information such as the current time, the moon phase and the light level of the block.[7]
  • Geo Scanner gives you information about the blocks around it and the chunk it sits in. It has a delay between scans, so build that into your code.[8]
  • Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range, and also the player who clicks on it.[9]
  • NBT Storage lets you input and output custom data to a block. It is mostly provided for ID support.[23][27]
  • Colony Integrator interacts with a MineColonies colony. Connect it to a computer in the area of the village.[13][23]

Inventory Manager and Memory Card

The Inventory Manager talks to a player's inventory, and it needs a Memory Card to know whose. Right click with the card in hand to assign it to yourself, then put the card into the manager. The guide also says AR Goggles can be used together with the Inventory Manager to communicate with the player's inventory.[14][15][24]

Storage bridges

The ME Bridge connects a computer to Applied Energistics 2, and the RS Bridge connects it to Refined Storage. With either one you can retrieve items, craft items, get all items as a list and more. The ME Bridge uses one channel on your network.[11][12]

The pack changed the recipes for both bridges, and for the Colony Integrator too. These are the in-pack recipes, so ignore any older guide that shows different ingredients.[23]

Pocket computer addons

The Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box also come as pocket computer upgrades. Combine one with a pocket computer to add that peripheral to it. You can't use the associated events on a pocket computer.[16]

Turtles and automata cores

The Weak Automata Core is a turtle upgrade that turns a turtle into an automaton. It lets the turtle dig blocks with a tool, click on a block with an item or an empty hand, suck up items (all or specific ones), detect items around it, detect a block or turtle in its line of view, and charge the turtle from an RF item in its inventory.[17][23]

Crafting Shaped

any redstone storage blockPotionany redstone storage block

Recipe id: advancedperipherals:weak_automata_core

The weak core is the starting point. You upgrade it by feeding it mobs, and each upgrade adds new abilities on top of the weak core's.[17][18][19]

  • End Automata Core: the weak core becomes this after consuming 10 endermen. It adds limited, world-bound teleportation. You store points and then teleport to them, but stored points are lost when the turtle is broken.[18][23]
  • Husbandry Automata Core: the weak core becomes this after consuming 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep. It lets the turtle interact with animals and even transfer them inside it, but any stored animal is lost when the turtle is broken.[19][23]

Cooldowns and fuel

World-changing operations consume turtle fuel, unless you disable fuel usage in the CC:Tweaked configuration. Most of these operations also have cooldowns, and every active cooldown can be read through peripheral methods.[6]

If a cooldown feels too long, raise the fuel consumption rate. For example, a click that costs 1 fuel point and has a 5 second cooldown can run once every 2.5 seconds at fuel consumption 2, but it then costs 2 fuel points.[6]

Watch out: Fuel cost grows faster than the cooldown drops. Fuel consumption 3 requires 4 fuel points. Each core also has its own maximum fuel consumption, which you can read with the getConfiguration method.[6]

Overpowered cores

Each core has an overpowered version: Overpowered Weak Automata Core, Overpowered End Automata Core and Overpowered Husbandry Automata Core. They don't use up item durability. The price is that if you perform any operation without enough fuel, the upgrade breaks immediately.[20][23]

Tip: Keep your turtle well fueled when it carries an overpowered core, because running dry destroys the upgrade.[20]

Chunk loading turtles

The Chunk Controller is a crafting ingredient for the Chunky Turtle. Combine it with a turtle or advanced turtle to make that turtle chunk-loading.[21][23]

Good to know

  • If an item is disabled in the mod's config, you can still craft it, but it has no functionality. Its tooltip says so.[24]
  • The Computer Tool currently has no function. The guide calls it a useless but wonderful item.[24][25]
  • This pack sets World.givePlayerBookOnJoin to false, so new players don't get the Advanced Peripherals documentation book automatically.[28]

How do you progress through Advanced Peripherals?

4 parts

Unverified The sources here show no pack quests for this mod, so they give no quest chapter or position to follow. The tiers below come from the in-pack recipes and the in-game guide. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Tier 1: the Peripheral Casing

Most things in this mod start with the Peripheral Casing. Make a stack of these first, because most peripherals and the turtle core upgrades build on it.[23]

Tier 2: standalone peripherals

These are the blocks you connect to a computer. The Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages, the Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range, and the Environment Detector reads things like the current time and moon phase.[5][7][9][23]

The Energy Detector, NBT Storage and Inventory Manager come next. The Inventory Manager works with a Memory Card: right click with the card to assign it to yourself, then put the card into the manager.[10][14][15][23][27]

The Block Reader reads data of blocks and tile entities in front of it. The Geo Scanner gives information about the blocks around it and the chunk it sits in, and it has a delay between scans.[4][8][23]

The Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box also come as Pocket Computer upgrades. Note that you can't use the associated events on a pocket computer.[16]

Tier 3: mod integrations

The bridges and the colony integrator are where the pack changes things. Their recipes are marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[23]

Turtle upgrades and automata cores

The Chunk Controller is a crafting ingredient for the Chunky Turtle. Combine it with a turtle or advanced turtle to make it chunk-loading.[21][23]

The Weak Automata Core is the entry point for automata. It lets a turtle dig, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge from an RF item in its inventory.[17][23]

Recipe id: advancedperipherals:weak_automata_core

The sources show no crafting recipe for the advanced cores. You get them by feeding mobs to a weak core. Consuming 10 endermans turns it into the End Automata Core, which adds limited world-bound teleportation. Consuming 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheeps turns it into the Husbandry Automata Core, which lets the turtle interact with animals.[17][18][19][23]

The last step is the overpowered versions: the Overpowered Weak Automata Core, Overpowered End Automata Core and Overpowered Husbandry Automata Core. Each is made from its matching core, and the in-pack recipes are shown below.[20][23]

Watch out: Overpowered cores don't consume item durability, but if you try an operation without enough fuel, the upgrade breaks immediately. Keep your turtle fueled.[20]
Tip: World-changing operations use turtle fuel and have cooldowns. A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown but costs more fuel. Every core has a maximum rate, which you can read with the getConfiguration method.[6]

The Computer Tool opens the GUIs of this mod's blocks. The in-game guide calls it useless for now, so you can skip it while you progress.[25]

How does Advanced Peripherals work with other mods?

4 parts

Advanced Peripherals is built to connect ComputerCraft computers to the rest of your base. Its peripherals are meant for interacting with other mods, players, the world and the game chat. In this pack, the clearest links to other mods are in the crafting recipes for the bridge and integrator blocks.[2][23]

Applied Energistics 2: ME Bridge

The ME Bridge lets a computer talk to an Applied Energistics 2 network. You can retrieve items, craft items, get a list of everything stored and more. It uses one channel on your network, so leave room for it.[11]

The pack changes this recipe, so don't assume it matches what you remember from other modpacks. It is built from Applied Energistics 2 parts on top of the mod's own casing.[23]

Refined Storage: RS Bridge

If you run Refined Storage instead, the RS Bridge does the same kind of job. You can retrieve items, craft items, get all items as a list and more.[12]

The pack also changes this recipe. It draws on Refined Storage components and on several Refined Storage item groups rather than a single fixed part.[23]

MineColonies: Colony Integrator

The Colony Integrator can interact with a MineColonies colony. Connect it to a computer inside the area of your village to make use of it.[13]

The pack changes this recipe too. It uses parts from MineColonies and Structurize, so you need to have made progress with those mods before you can build one.[23]

The mod's turtle upgrades also depend on CC:Tweaked. Operations that change the world consume turtle fuel unless fuel usage is disabled in the CC:Tweaked configuration.[6]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Advanced Peripherals, so there is no quest-guided path for any of these connections.

Which Advanced Peripherals config options matter?

The only Advanced Peripherals config the sources confirm for this pack is a single world setting. It controls whether new players get the mod's documentation book when they join.[28]

  • World.givePlayerBookOnJoin is set to false in this pack. That means the documentation is not handed to new players when they join. The option's own description says it gives the AP documentation to new players.[28]

If you want new players to receive the documentation automatically, this is the option to look at. Set it to true in the world.toml file in the Advancedperipherals config folder.[28]

Unverified The mod's default for this option isn't in the sources, so it's unconfirmed whether the pack changed it. Other Advanced Peripherals options, such as peripheral limits or feature toggles, also aren't covered by the sources, so their values in this pack are unverified.

What changed in Advanced Peripherals between versions?

Here's how Advanced Peripherals has moved through the pack. The pack changelogs only record version bumps, so this is a timeline of which version shipped when, not a list of features.[29][30]

  • All the Mods 10 2.37: Advanced Peripherals 0.7.49a was added to the pack.[29]
  • All the Mods 10 4.0: updated from 0.7.49a to 0.7.50b.[31]
  • All the Mods 10 4.1: updated from 0.7.50b to 0.7.51b.[32]

  • All the Mods 10 4.6: updated from 0.7.55b to 0.7.56b.[35]
  • All the Mods 10 4.12: updated from 0.7.56b to 0.7.57b.[36]

All the Mods 10 4.14 ships 0.7.57b, using the file AdvancedPeripherals-1.21.1-0.7.57b.jar. That's the version this guide describes.[30]

Unverified What changed inside the mod between these versions (new peripherals, fixes, balance or config changes) is unverified. The sources here include no stored changelogs for the shipped jars, so the mod's own release notes are where those details live.
