What is Advanced Peripherals?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Advanced Peripherals adds a set of extra peripherals and turtle upgrades for ComputerCraft-style computers. The pack includes version 0.8.0a. The in-game manual describes the peripherals as a way to interact with other mods, players, the world and the game chat.[1][2][3]
It's for you if you like programming. The blocks all work by connecting them to a computer, and the turtle features rely on CC:Tweaked's turtle fuel rules. If you never touch computers or turtles, you can safely skip this mod.[4][5][6]
What you get
- Information blocks: the Block Reader reads blocks and tile entities in front of it, the Environment Detector reports things like time, moon phase and light level, the Geo Scanner scans blocks and the chunk around it, and the Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range.[4][7][8][9]
- Chat and energy: the Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages, and the Energy Detector measures energy flow and can limit it like a resistor.[5][10]
- Mod bridges: the ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2, the RS Bridge talks to Refined Storage, and the Colony Integrator works with a MineColonies colony.[11][12][13]
- Player inventory access: the Inventory Manager communicates with a player's inventory using a Memory Card that you assign to yourself.[14][15]
- Pocket computer upgrades for the Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box. These don't support the associated events.[16]
Turtle upgrades
The Weak Automata Core turns a turtle into a more capable automaton. It can dig, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge the turtle from an RF item. It's also the starting point for two advanced variants: the End Automata Core adds limited world-bound teleportation, and the Husbandry Automata Core lets the turtle interact with animals.[17][18][19]
Combining any automata core with a nether star gives an overpowered version that doesn't use item durability. The catch is that it breaks immediately if you use it without enough fuel. The Chunk Controller is a separate ingredient that makes a turtle chunk-loading.[20][21]
Unverified The sources don't show any quests in this pack that involve the mod, or any place for it on the ATM Star path. Treat it as an optional mod for players who enjoy automation with computers.
How do you get started with Advanced Peripherals?
6 parts
Advanced Peripherals adds blocks and turtle upgrades that you hook up to a computer and control with code. This pack is set up to hand new players the mod's documentation book when they join, so check your inventory first.[22][23][24]
Step 1: Make a Peripheral Casing
Almost everything in the mod starts from the Peripheral Casing, an empty hull that exists as a crafting ingredient. Make a few of these before anything else.[25][26]

Step 2: Your first peripherals
The mod's own advancement for the basic toolkit asks for a Redstone Integrator, an Inventory Manager and an Energy Detector, so that trio is a good place to start. The Redstone Integrator is handy when you need to output redstone on more sides than a regular computer has.[25][27]

Each of these gets used by connecting it to a computer. The Energy Detector can also act as a resistor if you define a max flow rate.[27][28][29]
Step 3: Link yourself with a Memory Card
The Inventory Manager talks to a player's inventory, but it needs a Memory Card first. Right click with the card in hand to assign it to yourself, then put the card into the manager.[28][30]

Step 4: Chat and sensing
When you want your computer to talk to you, craft a Chat Box. It sends and receives game chat, and a message that starts with a $ is only visible to the Chat Box.[31]

Step 5: Link your storage
If you run Applied Energistics 2 or Refined Storage, the bridges let a computer retrieve and craft items. The pack changed both recipes, so use the ones below and not what you remember from other packs. The ME Bridge uses one channel.[26][34][35]

Power use for each bridge is set in Peripherals.ME_Bridge.mePowerConsumption and Peripherals.RS_Bridge.rsPowerConsumption, and both are 10 per tick here.[36]
Step 6: Turn a turtle into an automaton
The Weak Automata Core is a turtle upgrade that lets a turtle dig with a tool, click on blocks, suck up items and detect things around it.[25][37]

World-changing operations burn turtle fuel and most have cooldowns, so build that into your code. The cooldown and cost values live in the Operations section of the peripherals config, for example Peripherals.Operations.digCooldown.[36][38]
Later you can feed mobs to the weak core to upgrade it. 10 endermen make the End Automata Core, and 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep make the Husbandry Automata Core.[25][39][40]
How does Advanced Peripherals work?
7 parts
Advanced Peripherals is split into blocks you connect to a computer and upgrades that turn a turtle into a much stronger machine. Nearly all of it is driven by your code, so this section covers how each piece behaves and what the pack sets for it.[22][37][42]
Peripheral blocks
Most peripherals start from the Peripheral Casing, an empty hull used as a crafting ingredient. Here is the pack's recipe for it.[25][26]

The in-game guide tells you to connect each of these blocks to a computer before you can use them. Here is what each one does.[27][28][29][31][32][33][34][35][43][44][45]
- Block Reader reads data of blocks and tile entities in front of it, so you can target a block that has no computer support of its own.[25][43]
- Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages. A message that starts with a dollar sign is only visible to the Chat Box. In this pack the default prefix is "AP" (Peripherals.Chat_Box.defaultChatBoxPrefix). The range is unlimited because Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMaxRange is -1, and it can message other dimensions. Run and suggest command actions are wrapped to run with zero permission, and a banned list blocks commands such as /op and /give.[31][36]
- Energy Detector detects energy flow and acts as a resistor. You set the max flow rate to use it that way. The pack's ceiling is 2,147,483,647 (Peripherals.Energy_Detector.energyDetectorMaxFlow).[29][36]
- Environment Detector reads the environment: the current time, the moon phase, the light level of the block and more.[33]
- Geo Scanner gives you information about the blocks around it and the chunk it sits in. There is a delay between scans, so build that into your code.[44]
- Inventory Manager talks to a player's inventory. Right click a Memory Card to bind it to yourself, then put the card into the manager.[28][30]
- NBT Storage lets you read and write custom data on a block. This pack caps the stored NBT string length at 1,048,576 (Peripherals.NBT_Storage.nbtStorageMaxSize).[36][45]
- Player Detector recognises players within range, and also the player who clicks it. Its range is unlimited here (Peripherals.Player_Detector.playerDetMaxRange is -1). The player position function is on and returns extra information such as rotation and dimension. Random position error is off.[32][36]
- Redstone Integrator works like the redstone API of a computer. Use it when you need redstone output on more sides than a regular computer offers.[27]
Storage bridges and power
ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2 and uses one channel. You can retrieve items, craft items, list everything and more. RS Bridge does the same job for Refined Storage. This pack changed the recipe for both bridges, so use these and not the mod defaults.[26][34][35]

Each bridge draws 10 power per tick (Peripherals.ME_Bridge.mePowerConsumption and Peripherals.RS_Bridge.rsPowerConsumption).[36]
RF storage for peripherals that can use it is switched off in this pack (Peripherals.Powered_Peripherals.enablePoweredPeripherals is false). If you turn it on, the cap per peripheral is 100,000,000 (Peripherals.Powered_Peripherals.poweredPeripheralMaxEnergyStored).[36]
Turtle upgrades: automata cores
The Weak Automata Core is a turtle upgrade. It lets the turtle dig with a tool, click on a block with an item or an empty hand, and suck up items around it, all or specific ones. It can also detect items around it, detect a block or turtle in its line of view, and charge the turtle from an RF item in its inventory. Here is the pack's recipe.[26][37]

| any redstone storage block | any redstone storage block |
Recipe id: advancedperipherals:weak_automata_core
The weak core is only the start. To get the advanced variants, you feed mobs to it.[37]
- End Automata Core: the weak core becomes this after consuming 10 endermen. It adds limited world-bound teleportation. You store points and teleport to them, and stored points are lost when the turtle is broken. The pack limits it to 64 stored points (Metaphysics.endAutomataCoreWarpPointLimit).[25][39][46]
- Husbandry Automata Core: the weak core becomes this after consuming 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep. It adds interaction with animals, including transferring them inside the turtle. Stored animals are lost when the turtle is broken.[25][40]
Each core type has its own enable switch in the pack, and every one is on (Metaphysics.enableWeakAutomataCore, Metaphysics.enableEndAutomataCore and Metaphysics.enableHusbandryAutomataCore).[46]
Overpowered cores
Combine any automata core with a nether star to get its overpowered version. Here is the weak core version.[26][47]
Crafting Shapeless
Recipe id: advancedperipherals:overpowered_weak_automata_core
Overpowered cores do not use up item durability. The price is fuel: if you try an operation without enough fuel, the upgrade breaks immediately. There is also a chance of 0.002 that an overpowered automaton breaks after a rotation cycle (Metaphysics.overpoweredAutomataBreakChance).[46][47]
Cooldowns and fuel
Operations that change the world consume turtle fuel, unless fuel usage is disabled in the CC:Tweaked configuration. Most of them also have cooldowns, and you can read every active cooldown through peripheral methods.[38]
A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown but costs more fuel. For example, a click that costs 1 fuel and has a 5 second cooldown can run every 2.5 seconds at rate 2, for 2 fuel. The cost grows faster than the cooldown drops: rate 3 needs 4 fuel points. Each core has a maximum rate, which you can read with the getConfiguration method.[38]
The pack sets these maximum rates and interaction radii. The sources do not say which core uses which tier.[46]
- Tier 1: radius 2, max rate 2 (Metaphysics.tier1AutomataCoreInteractionRadius, Metaphysics.tier1AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate).[46]
- Tier 2: radius 4, max rate 3 (Metaphysics.tier2AutomataCoreInteractionRadius, Metaphysics.tier2AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate).[46]
- Overpowered tier 1: radius 4, max rate 3 (Metaphysics.overpoweredTier1AutomataCoreInteractionRadius, Metaphysics.overpoweredTier1AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate).[46]
- Overpowered tier 2: radius 6, max rate 4 (Metaphysics.overpoweredTier2AutomataCoreInteractionRadius, Metaphysics.overpoweredTier2AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate).[46]
The base fuel cost and cooldown of each operation are set in the Operations section of the peripherals config. Here are the pack's values.[36]
- Dig: cost 1, cooldown 1000 (Peripherals.Operations.digCost, Peripherals.Operations.digCooldown).[36]
- Suck: cost 1, cooldown 1000 (Peripherals.Operations.suckCost, Peripherals.Operations.suckCooldown).[36]
- Use on block: cost 1, cooldown 5000 (Peripherals.Operations.useOnBlockCost, Peripherals.Operations.useOnBlockCooldown).[36]
- Use on animal: cost 10, cooldown 2500 (Peripherals.Operations.useOnAnimalCost, Peripherals.Operations.useOnAnimalCooldown).[36]
- Capture animal: cost 100, cooldown 50000 (Peripherals.Operations.captureAnimalCost, Peripherals.Operations.captureAnimalCooldown).[36]
- Warp: cost 1, cooldown 1000 (Peripherals.Operations.warpCost, Peripherals.Operations.warpCooldown).[36]
The pack also sets an energy to fuel rate of 575 (Metaphysics.energyToFuelRate). Peripherals also get an initial cooldown on initialisation, which is enabled here (Core.isInitialCooldownEnabled). Values below the sensitive level of 6000 do not trigger it (Core.initialCooldownSensitiveLevel).[46][48]
Chunky turtles
The Chunk Controller is a crafting ingredient for the Chunky Turtle. Combine it with a turtle or advanced turtle and it becomes chunk-loading.[49]

Recipe id: advancedperipherals:chunk_controller
In this pack the radius is 0 (Peripherals.Chunky_Turtle.chunkyTurtleRadius), so a chunky turtle only loads the chunk it stands in. A radius of 1 would load 9 chunks in total.[36]
Pocket computers
There are pocket computer upgrades for the Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box. Combine one with a pocket computer to add that peripheral to it, but the associated events do not work. The pack gives pockets infinite fuel (Peripherals.Pocket_Peripherals.disablePocketFuelConsumption).[36][50]
How do you progress through Advanced Peripherals?
7 parts
Advanced Peripherals has no quest steps to follow in the sources here, so the progression below comes from the in-pack recipes. The order is: one base block, then peripherals, then the bridges to your storage mods, then the turtle upgrades.[26]
Start: the Peripheral Casing
Most recipes in the mod start from the Peripheral Casing, so this is the first thing to make.[26]

Basic peripherals
These are the entry-level blocks. Each one connects to a computer, and each is a single craft from the casing plus a few common materials.[22][26]
- Redstone Integrator lets a computer output redstone signals on more sides than the computer itself has.[26][27]
- Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range, and also the player who clicks on it.[26][32]
- Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages. Start a message with a dollar sign ($) and it is only visible to the Chat Box.[26][31]
- Environment Detector reads things like the current time, the moon phase and the light level of the block.[26][33]
- Energy Detector detects energy flow and acts as a resistor, since you can define a max flow rate.[26][29]
- NBT Storage lets you input and output custom data to a block. It is mostly provided for ID support.[26][45]

The Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box also come as pocket computer upgrades. Combine them with a pocket computer to add the peripheral, but you can't use the associated events that way.[50]
Readers, scanners and the player link
These blocks read the world around them. The Block Reader reads data from blocks and tile entities in front of it. The Geo Scanner reports on the blocks around it and the chunk it sits in, and it has a delay between scans, so build that into your code.[26][43][44]
For the player's own inventory you need two things: the Inventory Manager and the Memory Card. Right click with the card to assign it to yourself, then put it into the manager.[26][28][30]
Storage bridges
The ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2 and can retrieve items, craft items and list everything in the network. It uses one channel. The RS Bridge does the same kind of job for Refined Storage.[34][35]
Both bridge recipes are changed by the pack, so don't rely on the mod's default recipes. These are the versions you actually craft here:[26]

The advanced cores have no crafting recipe in the sources, only uses as ingredients. According to the in-game guide, you make them by feeding mobs to a weak core. After consuming 10 endermen it becomes an End Automata Core, which adds limited world-bound teleportation. Stored points are lost when the turtle is broken. After consuming 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep it becomes a Husbandry Automata Core, which can interact with animals and transfer them inside. Stored animals are lost when the turtle is broken.[26][37][39][40]
Top end: overpowered cores
Each automata core has an overpowered version: Overpowered Weak Automata Core, Overpowered Husbandry Automata Core and Overpowered End Automata Core. They don't use up item durability. The recipes are shown below.[26][47]

World-changing operations use turtle fuel, unless fuel usage is disabled in the CC:Tweaked configuration. Most of them also have cooldowns. A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown, but fuel cost grows faster than the cooldown drops, and each core has a maximum rate you can read with getConfiguration.[38]
Optional extra
The Computer Tool is meant to open GUIs from the mod's blocks, but the in-game guide says it is currently useless.[26][41]
How does Advanced Peripherals work with other mods?
3 parts
Advanced Peripherals is mostly about connecting computers and turtles to the rest of your base. In this pack, the clearest links to other mods are in the crafting recipes for some of its blocks.[22][26]
Storage bridges: Applied Energistics 2 and Refined Storage
The ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2. From a computer you can retrieve items, craft items, get a list of everything in the system and more. The pack changes its recipe, so go by the recipe below, where the ME Interface and the Fluix Block from Applied Energistics 2 appear.[26][34]
Crafting Shaped

This recipe is changed by the pack, so it can differ from the mod's default.
The RS Bridge is the Refined Storage counterpart. It can retrieve items, craft items, list everything and more. The pack also changes this recipe, so go by the recipe below, where the Interface and Quartz Enriched Iron from Refined Storage appear.[26][35]

This recipe is also changed by the pack.
Block Reader and Geo Scanner: wired modem and observer
The Block Reader and the Geo Scanner both need a Wired Modem and a Observer in their recipes. These are the mod's own recipes, not changed by the pack. Both blocks work once they are connected to a computer.[26][43][44]

Once placed, the Block Reader reads data from the blocks and tile entities in front of it. The Geo Scanner gives you information about the blocks around it and the chunk it sits in.[43][44]
One more link: MineColonies
The Colony Integrator can interact with a colony from MineColonies. You connect it to a computer in the area of the village.[51]
Which Advanced Peripherals config options matter?
6 parts
Advanced Peripherals has four config files in this pack: general, world, metaphysics and peripherals. Here are the options you are most likely to touch, with the values the pack sets.[24][36][46][48]
Pocket peripherals and power
- Peripherals.Pocket_Peripherals.disablePocketFuelConsumption is true in this pack, so pockets have infinite fuel.[36]
- Peripherals.Powered_Peripherals.enablePoweredPeripherals is false, so peripherals that could use RF storage don't have it.[36]
- If you turn RF storage on, Peripherals.Powered_Peripherals.poweredPeripheralMaxEnergyStored is set to 100,000,000.[36]
- The ME Bridge uses 10 power per tick, set by Peripherals.ME_Bridge.mePowerConsumption.[36]
- The RS Bridge also uses 10 power per tick, set by Peripherals.RS_Bridge.rsPowerConsumption.[36]
Chat Box
The Chat Box is enabled and uses the prefix "AP" (Peripherals.Chat_Box.defaultChatBoxPrefix). Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMaxRange is -1, which means infinite range, and Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMultiDimensional is true, so it can message players in other dimensions.[36]
For safety, Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxWrapCommand is true, so run_command and suggest_command actions run with zero permission. Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxPreventRunCommand is false, so run_command is still allowed. The banned command list in Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxBannedCommands includes /execute, /op, /give, /fill and /setblock.[36]
Player Detector
Peripherals.Player_Detector.playerDetMaxRange is -1, so range is unlimited. Peripherals.Player_Detector.enablePlayerPosRandomError is false, so positions from getPlayerPos are not given random error.[36]
If you turn random error on, the exact range is set by Peripherals.Player_Detector.playerPosPreciseMaxRange at 100 blocks. The maximum error per axis is set by Peripherals.Player_Detector.playerPosRandomErrorAmount at 1,000 blocks.[36]
Turtles and operations
- Peripherals.Chunky_Turtle.chunkyTurtleRadius is 0, so a chunky turtle only loads the chunk it is standing in. A value of 1 would load 9 chunks in total.[36]
- Peripherals.Compass_Turtle.compassAccurePlaceFreeRadius is 1, the free distance the compass turtle can locate accurately in each axis.[36]
- Peripherals.Compass_Turtle.compassAccurePlaceRadius is 3, the maximum distance it can locate accurately in each axis.[36]
- Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksMaxFreeRadius is 8 and Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksMaxCostRadius is 16 for block scanning.[36]
- Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksExtraBlockCost is 0.17, and Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksCooldown is 2000.[36]
- Peripherals.Operations.captureAnimalCooldown is 50000 and Peripherals.Operations.captureAnimalCost is 100.[36]
- Peripherals.Operations.digCooldown is 1000 and Peripherals.Operations.digCost is 1.[36]
Automata cores
Each core tier has an interaction radius and a max fuel consumption rate. These are the values the pack sets, one option per item.[46]
- Metaphysics.tier1AutomataCoreInteractionRadius is 2.[46]
- Metaphysics.tier1AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate is 2.[46]
- Metaphysics.tier2AutomataCoreInteractionRadius is 4.[46]
- Metaphysics.tier2AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate is 3.[46]
- Metaphysics.overpoweredTier1AutomataCoreInteractionRadius is 4.[46]
- Metaphysics.overpoweredTier1AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate is 3.[46]
- Metaphysics.overpoweredTier2AutomataCoreInteractionRadius is 6.[46]
- Metaphysics.overpoweredTier2AutomataCoreMaxFuelConsumptionRate is 4.[46]
Overpowered automata have a 0.002 chance to break after a rotation cycle (Metaphysics.overpoweredAutomataBreakChance). The End Automata Core stores up to 64 warp points (Metaphysics.endAutomataCoreWarpPointLimit). Metaphysics.energyToFuelRate is 575.[46]
General and world
- Unsafe.enableUnsafe and General.enableDebugMode are both false. Leave unsafe off unless you accept the risk to your world.[48]
- Core.isInitialCooldownEnabled is true, so initial cooldown on peripheral initialization is on.[48]
- Core.initialCooldownSensitiveLevel is 6000.[48]
- World.givePlayerBookOnJoin is true, so new players get the Advanced Peripherals documentation.[24]
- World.enableVillagerStructures and World.enableWanderingTraderTrades are both true.[24]
- World.villagerStructureWeight is 10.[24]
