What is Advanced Peripherals?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Advanced Peripherals adds a set of extra peripherals and turtle upgrades for ComputerCraft-style computers. The pack includes version 0.8.0a. The in-game manual describes the peripherals as a way to interact with other mods, players, the world and the game chat.[1][2][3]

It's for you if you like programming. The blocks all work by connecting them to a computer, and the turtle features rely on CC:Tweaked's turtle fuel rules. If you never touch computers or turtles, you can safely skip this mod.[4][5][6]

What you get

  • Information blocks: the Block Reader reads blocks and tile entities in front of it, the Environment Detector reports things like time, moon phase and light level, the Geo Scanner scans blocks and the chunk around it, and the Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range.[4][7][8][9]
  • Chat and energy: the Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages, and the Energy Detector measures energy flow and can limit it like a resistor.[5][10]
  • Mod bridges: the ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2, the RS Bridge talks to Refined Storage, and the Colony Integrator works with a MineColonies colony.[11][12][13]
  • Player inventory access: the Inventory Manager communicates with a player's inventory using a Memory Card that you assign to yourself.[14][15]
  • Pocket computer upgrades for the Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box. These don't support the associated events.[16]

Turtle upgrades

The Weak Automata Core turns a turtle into a more capable automaton. It can dig, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge the turtle from an RF item. It's also the starting point for two advanced variants: the End Automata Core adds limited world-bound teleportation, and the Husbandry Automata Core lets the turtle interact with animals.[17][18][19]

Combining any automata core with a nether star gives an overpowered version that doesn't use item durability. The catch is that it breaks immediately if you use it without enough fuel. The Chunk Controller is a separate ingredient that makes a turtle chunk-loading.[20][21]

Tip: Automata operations use turtle fuel and have cooldowns. A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown, but fuel cost grows faster than the cooldown drops, so don't crank it up without checking the numbers.[6]

Unverified The sources don't show any quests in this pack that involve the mod, or any place for it on the ATM Star path. Treat it as an optional mod for players who enjoy automation with computers.

How do you get started with Advanced Peripherals?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.0 guide

Advanced Peripherals gives your computers new ways to reach out into the world. Its peripherals let you interact with other mods, players, the world and the game chat, and almost every one works the same way: place it, connect it to a computer, and start coding.[2][3][5][7][9]

Step 1: Make a stack of Peripheral Casings

Your very first craft should be the Peripheral Casing. On its own it's just an empty hull, but it's the crafting ingredient behind nearly every peripheral in this pack, including the detectors, the Chat Box, the Inventory Manager, both storage bridges and the Weak Automata Core. Make a few so you're not running back to the crafting table every time.[22][23]

Step 2: Your first peripherals

These three are cheap and perfect for your first scripts. The Player Detector recognizes players within a certain range, and it also knows who clicked on it. That makes it great for doors or greeting screens.[9]

Tip: The Environment Detector, Player Detector and Chat Box can also be combined with a pocket computer to add the peripheral to it. The catch is that you can't use their events that way.[16]

Step 3: Inventory Manager and Memory Card

The Inventory Manager can send items to your inventory or pull specific items out of it. To link it to you, right click with a Memory Card in hand to assign the card to yourself, then put the card into the manager.[14][15][22]

Step 4: Hook into your storage system

Once you have an Applied Energistics 2 or Refined Storage network, the bridges let your computer retrieve items, craft items, list everything you've stored and more. The ME Bridge uses one channel on your ME network. This pack changed the recipes for both the ME Bridge and the RS Bridge, so check the recipes below rather than an old wiki page.[11][12][23]

Step 5: Upgrade your turtles

When you're ready for turtles, build a Weak Automata Core. This turtle upgrade lets a turtle dig with a tool, click blocks with an item or an empty hand, suck up and detect nearby items, detect blocks or turtles in its line of view, and charge itself from an RF item in its inventory.[17]

Keep an eye on fuel. All world-changing operations consume turtle fuel, and most have cooldowns you'll need to plan around in your code.[6]

The weak core is only the start. Feed it 10 endermen and it becomes an End Automata Core with limited teleportation. Feed it 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep instead and you get a Husbandry Automata Core that can interact with animals. Any teleport points or animals stored in a turtle are lost if the turtle is broken.[18][19]

Tip: Don't bother crafting the Computer Tool early. Right now it has no real use; even its own tooltip calls it a useless wrench.[22][24]

How does Advanced Peripherals work?

6 parts

Advanced Peripherals is built around computers and turtles. Most of its blocks are peripherals: you place one, connect it to a ComputerCraft computer, and your program talks to it. The turtle side of the mod works through upgrades called automata cores. This section covers how both halves behave in this pack.[25][26][27]

Connecting peripherals

The in-game guide gives the same instruction for nearly every peripheral: connect it to a computer. The Block Reader reads data from the block in front of it, so it can work with blocks that have no computer support of their own. The Geo Scanner reports on the blocks around it and the chunk it sits in, with a delay between scans, so your code has to allow for that.[27][28][29]

The Environment Detector reads things like the current time, the moon phase and the light level of its block. The Player Detector recognises players within a certain range, and also the player who clicks on it.[30][31]

Pocket computer upgrades exist for the Environment Detector, the Player Detector and the Chat Box. Combine the upgrade with a pocket computer to add the peripheral. You can't use the associated events on the pocket version. In this pack, pocket peripherals have infinite fuel because Peripherals.Pocket_Peripherals.disablePocketFuelConsumption is true.[32][33]

Storage bridges and power

The ME Bridge talks to Applied Energistics 2. You can retrieve items, craft items, get everything as a list and more, and it uses one channel. The RS Bridge does a similar job for Refined Storage.[34][35]

Both bridges draw power. Peripherals.ME_Bridge.mePowerConsumption and Peripherals.RS_Bridge.rsPowerConsumption are each set to 10 per tick.[33]

The pack changed both bridge recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from other packs. The ME Bridge now asks for AE2 parts:[36]

The Energy Detector detects energy flow and acts as a resistor, and you set the max flow rate to use it that way. Peripherals.Energy_Detector.energyDetectorMaxFlow is 2,147,483,647 in this pack.[33][37]

RF storage for peripherals that could use it is switched off here: Peripherals.Powered_Peripherals.enablePoweredPeripherals is false. If it were on, Peripherals.Powered_Peripherals.poweredPeripheralMaxEnergyStored (100,000,000) would cap the storage.[33]

Players, chat and data

The Inventory Manager sends or receives specific items from a player inventory. To set it up, right click a Memory Card to assign it to yourself, then put the card into the manager. The AR Goggles can also be used with the Inventory Manager to communicate with your inventory.[29][38][39]

The Chat Box sends and receives game chat messages. A message that starts with a $ sign is only visible to the Chat Box. In this pack the prefix is "AP", messages can be up to 1,024 characters, and the range is unlimited (-1). The box can reach other dimensions. If you set a range other than -1, players in other dimensions won't receive messages.[33][40]

Command actions are guarded. Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxWrapCommand is true, so run_command and suggest_command actions run with zero permission. Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxBannedCommands also lists commands such as /execute, /op, /give and /setblock. Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxPreventRunCommand is false.[33]

The Player Detector has no range limit here (Peripherals.Player_Detector.playerDetMaxRange is -1). The getPlayerPos function is on and returns extra information such as rotation and dimension. Random position error is off, so positions are exact. Spectators are shown.[33]

The NBT Storage acts like a storage disk for NBT-based data. Peripherals.NBT_Storage.nbtStorageMaxSize limits the stored string length to 1,048,576.[29][33][41]

Chunky turtles

The Chunk Controller is a crafting ingredient. Combine it with a turtle or advanced turtle to make a chunk-loading Chunky Turtle. With Peripherals.Chunky_Turtle.chunkyTurtleRadius at 0, a chunky turtle loads only the chunk it is standing in. A radius of 1 would load the 8 surrounding chunks too, 9 in total.[33][42]

Automata cores

The Weak Automata Core is a turtle upgrade. It lets a turtle dig with a tool, click on a block with an item or an empty hand, suck up items around it (all or specific), detect items around it, detect a block or turtle in its line of view, and charge the turtle from an RF item in its inventory.[26][29]

Recipe id: advancedperipherals:weak_automata_core

The weak core is only the start. Feed it mobs to get advanced variants:[26]

  • End Automata Core: made after the weak core consumes 10 endermen. It adds limited, world-bound teleportation. You store points and teleport to them, and stored points are lost when the turtle is broken. The pack limits stored warp points to 64 (Metaphysics.endAutomataCoreWarpPointLimit).[29][43][44]
  • Husbandry Automata Core: made after the weak core consumes 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep. It lets the turtle interact with animals and even transfer them inside. A stored animal is lost when the turtle is broken.[29][45]

Combining any automata core with a nether star gives an overpowered version, for example the Overpowered Weak Automata Core. Overpowered cores don't use item durability, but if you try an operation without enough fuel the upgrade breaks immediately. There is also a break chance after a rotation cycle: Metaphysics.overpoweredAutomataBreakChance is 0.002.[36][44][46]

Cooldowns and fuel

World-changing operations consume turtle fuel, unless fuel usage is disabled in the CC:Tweaked configuration. Most operations also have cooldowns, and every active cooldown can be read through peripheral methods, so build that into your code.[47]

A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown but costs more fuel. For example, an operation that costs 1 fuel point and has a 5 second cooldown can run once per 2.5 seconds at fuel consumption 2, for 2 fuel points. Fuel grows faster than the cooldown drops: fuel consumption 3 needs 4 fuel points. Each core has a maximum rate, which you can read with the getConfiguration method.[47]

The pack's core limits (all equal to the mod defaults) are:[44]

Base costs and cooldowns for individual operations live in the Operations section of the peripherals config. Here are the pack's values, all equal to the mod defaults:[33]

Metaphysics.energyToFuelRate is 575 in this pack.[44]

Initial cooldown on peripheral initialization is enabled (Core.isInitialCooldownEnabled is true). Core.initialCooldownSensitiveLevel is 6,000, and values lower than that level will not trigger the initial cooldown.[48]

Watch out: Don't try an operation with an overpowered core when the turtle is low on fuel. The upgrade breaks immediately.[46]

How do you progress through Advanced Peripherals?

7 parts

Advanced Peripherals plugs into computers and turtles, and in this pack the way you move through it is by what you can afford to craft. I've split it into tiers by what each in-pack recipe asks of you, starting with the cheap peripherals and ending with the overpowered turtle cores from Advanced Peripherals.[25][36][49]

Unverified The sources here show no quest chapter in this pack that involves this mod, so the tiers below follow the in-pack recipes rather than the quest book.

Tier 1: The Peripheral Casing

Nearly everything starts with the Peripheral Casing. The Chat Box, Player Detector, Environment Detector, Energy Detector, Inventory Manager, NBT Storage, Block Reader, Geo Scanner, both bridges and the Weak Automata Core all use it in their recipes. Make several of these first.[36]

Tier 5: Automata cores for turtles

This is the deep end of the mod. The Weak Automata Core is a turtle upgrade that lets a turtle dig with a tool, click on blocks, suck up items, detect items and blocks, and charge itself from an RF item in its inventory.[26][36]

From there you feed mobs to the core to get an advanced variant:[26]

  • End Automata Core: after consuming 10 endermen, the weak core transforms. It adds limited world-bound teleportation, and stored points are lost if the turtle is broken.[26][43]
  • Husbandry Automata Core: after consuming 3 chickens, 3 cows and 3 sheep, the weak core transforms. It lets the turtle interact with animals and store them inside, and stored animals are lost if the turtle is broken.[26][45]

World-changing operations use turtle fuel and have cooldowns. A higher fuel consumption rate shortens the cooldown but costs more fuel, and every core has a max rate you can read with the getConfiguration method.[47]

Top tier: Overpowered cores

The overpowered versions are the top of the line. They don't consume item durability, but if you try an operation without enough fuel the upgrade breaks immediately, so keep your turtles fueled.[46]

How does Advanced Peripherals work with other mods?

3 parts

Advanced Peripherals is mostly about computers, and the in-pack recipes show it plugging into two storage mods and the ComputerCraft side of the pack. The quests in the pack do not touch this mod, so everything below comes from crafting recipes and the mod's own in-game guide.[25][36]

Applied Energistics 2: ME Bridge

The ME Bridge lets a computer interact with Applied Energistics 2. You can retrieve items, craft items, get all items as a list and more. It uses one channel on your network.[34]

Its recipe pulls in parts from Applied Energistics 2, and the pack has changed this recipe from the mod's own version. Use the recipe below, not any recipe you remember from other packs.[36]

Refined Storage: RS Bridge

The RS Bridge does the same job for Refined Storage. You can retrieve items, craft items, get all items as a list and more.[35]

The pack has changed this recipe too. It uses Refined Storage parts, including tagged exporters, external storages and importers, so several different Refined Storage items can fill those slots.[36]

ComputerCraft parts in the scanners

The Block Reader and the Geo Scanner are not storage bridges. Their recipes combine the mod's own Peripheral Casing with a Wired Modem from ComputerCraft and a vanilla Observer. Both recipes are the mod's own, not changed by the pack.[36]

Which Advanced Peripherals config options matter?

6 parts

Advanced Peripherals keeps its settings in four files in the config/Advancedperipherals folder: general, metaphysics, peripherals and world. Wherever the pack's files list a mod default, the pack's value matches it, so nothing below is a confirmed change from the defaults. Here are the options you're most likely to touch.[33][44][48][51]

Pocket computers and power

Chat Box

The Chat Box is enabled, and Peripherals.Chat_Box.defaultChatBoxPrefix is AP. Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMaxRange is -1, which means infinite range, and Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMultiDimensional is true, so it can message players in other dimensions.[33]

Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxMessageSize is 1,024, the mod default. That is the maximal number of characters in one message.[33]

Commands sent through a chat box are not blocked outright. Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxPreventRunCommand is false, but Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxWrapCommand is true. That means run_command and suggest_command actions execute with zero permission, so an operator can't accidentally fire off something dangerous. Peripherals.Chat_Box.chatBoxBannedCommands also blocks commands such as /execute, /op, /gamemode, /give, /fill, /setblock and /summon.[33]

Player Detector

Peripherals.Player_Detector.playerDetMaxRange is -1, so range is unlimited. Peripherals.Player_Detector.enablePlayerPosFunction is true and Peripherals.Player_Detector.morePlayerInformation is true, so getPlayerPos works and includes extras like rotation and dimension. Peripherals.Player_Detector.enablePlayerPosRandomError is false, so positions are not fuzzed with random error. Spectators are also still returned, because Peripherals.Player_Detector.showSpectators is true.[33]

Turtle operations and chunk loading

Every option in the Operations section matches the mod default. For example, Peripherals.Operations.digCooldown is 1,000 and Peripherals.Operations.digCost is 1. Peripherals.Operations.captureAnimalCooldown is 50,000 and Peripherals.Operations.captureAnimalCost is 100.[33]

Block scans are free up to the radius in Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksMaxFreeRadius, which is 8, and the max cost radius in Peripherals.Operations.scanBlocksMaxCostRadius is 16. Entity scans use the same values: Peripherals.Operations.scanEntitiesMaxFreeRadius is 8 and Peripherals.Operations.scanEntitiesMaxCostRadius is 16.[33]

Peripherals.Chunky_Turtle.chunkyTurtleRadius is 0, the mod default, so a chunky turtle loads only the chunk it is standing in. A value of 1 would load the 8 surrounding chunks too, 9 in total.[33]

Automata cores

Metaphysics.enableWeakAutomataCore, Metaphysics.enableHusbandryAutomataCore and Metaphysics.enableEndAutomataCore are all true. The interaction radius and max fuel consumption rate of each core are all at the mod defaults, as listed below.[44]

Metaphysics.overpoweredAutomataBreakChance is 0.002, the chance an overpowered automata breaks after a rotation cycle. Metaphysics.endAutomataCoreWarpPointLimit is 64 warp points stored in the warp core.[44]

World and general settings

Watch out: Leave Unsafe.enableUnsafe false, as the pack does. The mod's own comment says the unsafe operations can cause unexpected behavior in your world. Turning on Unsafe.ignoreTurtlePeripheralItemNBT would make you lose all NBT on the equipped item.[48]
