What is Just Dire Things?

2 parts

Just Dire Things 1.5.5 is part of the pack. It's an all-rounder mod. It adds machines focused mainly on automation, plus tools and armor that accept upgrades, and a goo system that turns ordinary metals into brand-new resources. If you like automating chores and building up one set of gear over time, this mod is for you.[1][2][3]

The goo progression

Goo is the heart of the mod. It transforms certain blocks placed next to it, and each tier can convert stronger blocks into more advanced resources. That gives you a step-by-step path through the mod's materials. Higher tier goo can always craft everything a lower tier can, and it works much faster.[4]

The pack's quest chapter for the mod follows the same order. It starts with a quest in "?" for Primogel Goo, then a quest in "?" for Blazebloom Goo, then a quest in "?" for VoidShimmer Goo, and finally a quest in "?" for Shadowpulse Goo. Many of the machine, tool and armor quests unlock once you have Ferricore or Blazegold.[9]

Gear and power

Each resource tier has a matching armor set, and armor and tools can take upgrades. You install an upgrade by putting the gear and the upgrade item together in a smithing table. You can toggle upgrades on and off from the tool's settings screen.[3][10]

The higher tiers run on Forge Energy. Celestigem armor holds 10,000 FE, and Eclipse Alloy armor holds 500,000 FE. The Pocket Ferricore Generator is the portable way to keep it all charged. It burns coal or this mod's upgraded coals, and higher tier fuels give you more energy per tick.[11][12][13]

Tip: Not sure which upgrades a piece of gear can take? Hold shift and read its tooltip.[10]

How do you get started with Just Dire Things?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

Almost everything in this mod starts with goo. Goo blocks transform certain blocks placed next to them into new materials, and each tier unlocks the next resource. Your first goal is to get your first goo block running.[14][15]

Step 1: Primogel Goo

Your first craft is Primogel Goo, the first tier of goo. It's made from simple Overworld materials and turns Iron into Ferricore. In the pack's quest book this is a quest in "?", and the rest of the chapter branches off from it.[16][17]

  1. Craft the goo block and place it in your world.[14]
  2. Activate it by feeding it the resource it consumes. The goo block itself shows you which item that is.[14]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo, and the transformation starts.[14]
Watch out: After each transformation there's a 10% chance the goo goes inactive and needs to be fed again. Inactive goo won't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes. Check on your goo now and then.[14]

Unverified The provided sources don't include the Primogel Goo recipe or say exactly which form of iron it converts, so check both in JEI. This site does hold All the Mods 10: To the Sky's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Step 2: Ferricore

Getting Raw Ferricore and a Ferricore Ingot completes a quest in "?". That quest unlocks a big part of the chapter: Ferricore tools and armor, the simple machines, the Pocket Ferricore Generator, the Fuel Canister and the Ferricore Wrench. Primal Coal also opens up right after your first goo.[17]

Ferricore armor is a small step up from iron, and it can take upgrades. Upgrades are installed by putting your tool or armor and the upgrade item in a smithing table. Shift while hovering a tool's tooltip to see which upgrades it supports. Press 'v' by default to turn a tool on or off.[18][19][20]

The simple machines don't need power. They work on the block or entity directly in front of them, and you can set how fast they run. The pack changed the recipes for the Simple Block Breaker and Simple Block Placer, so use the recipes shown below rather than older guides.[21][22]

Tip: The Fuel Canister stores fuel such as coal or wood, but not lava buckets. It feeds furnaces and generators, so you never waste a whole piece of coal smelting one ore. You can't get items back out of it, though.[23]

Step 3: Blazebloom Goo and Blazegold

Next up is Blazebloom Goo (a quest in "?"), which turns Gold into Blazegold. Higher-tier goo can also do everything lower tiers can, and it's much faster. Smelt or blast the Raw Blazegold you get into Blazegold Ingot.[14][17][22][24]

Hold on to your Ferricore gear. With a Template: Blazegold you can upgrade it to Blazegold in a smithing table, and your installed upgrades carry over. Some upgrades also scale with tier: the Hammer upgrade mines a 3x3 area in a Blazegold Pickaxe. Blazegold armor can be fully repaired by dropping it into a lava source block.[20][22][25][26]

A great early Blazegold pickup is the Blazejet Wand. Right-click to blast yourself in the direction you're facing. While it's in your hand, you take no fall damage.[17][27]

How does Just Dire Things work?

9 parts

Most of Just Dire Things is built around automation, and almost every machine follows the same pattern: a simple version and an advanced version. Learn that pattern once and you can read nearly every machine in the mod.[2][28]

Simple vs advanced machines

  • Simple machines do not need power. They can generally only affect a block or entity directly in front of them, and you control how fast they work with the Speed(ticks) button.[28]
  • Advanced machines are much more powerful but need power. They can generally affect a large area that you configure in the UI, they have filters, and they automatically charge any Forge Energy items placed inside them.[28]

Redstone and speed

The redstone button decides when a machine runs. By default redstone is ignored, so the machine always runs. Low means it only runs when it is NOT getting a signal, and High means it only runs when it is. Pulse makes it do one operation per pulse: usually one thing for a simple machine (like breaking 1 block), but possibly everything in its area for an advanced one.[29]

The Speed(ticks) button sets how often the machine runs while active. The default is 20, which is once per second. You can drop it as low as 1, which is every tick, but avoid that unless you really need it because it can contribute to lag.[29]

Watch out: Speed(ticks) set to 1 means the machine operates 20 times per second. Only do this when it is absolutely necessary, since it can add lag.[29]

Area and filters on advanced machines

Click the 'Render area' button to see in-world what an advanced machine will affect. RAD changes the radius, and OFF changes the block offset, which moves the centre of the area. Try them with 'Render area' turned on so you can see what you are doing.[30]

Most advanced machines have a row of filter slots for items, blocks or entities. You can drag from JEI into them, or click a slot with a stack in your hand. To filter entities, use a spawn egg or a Creature Catcher. A button switches between allow mode (only listed things are affected) and deny mode (everything BUT the listed things). Compare NBT makes the filter stricter, for example matching enchantments, or a specific sheep colour when filtering with a creature catcher.[30][31][32]

The Advanced Dropper is an exception: you can't change its radius, only its offset. Its filter slots also set the ORDER items drop in, so cobblestone followed by redstone drops cobblestone first, then redstone.[33]

When you have a setup you like, the Machine Settings Copier saves time. Shift-right click a machine to copy its settings, then right click another machine to paste them. Clicking in the air opens a menu where you pick which settings to copy.[32][34]

Power

The Simple Coal Generator makes Forge Energy (FE). It burns ordinary furnace fuel, but it can also use specialised coals: Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal and Eclipse Ember. Each step up raises both the FE per tick and the total FE you get from the same amount of coal. The Simple Fuel Generator builds on it with refined fuels, which come in 3 tiers.[35][36]

The upgraded coals come from goo (see below). Placing a coal block next to Primogel Goo gives Primal Coal, and placing a block of Primal Coal next to Blazebloom Goo gives Blaze Ember.[37][38]

The Energy Transmitter moves power wirelessly. Connect it to a generator so its internal buffer fills with FE, then set its area of effect. Anything inside that can receive FE gets filled from the buffer, and you can filter which machines receive power. Wireless transfer loses a small amount of energy on purpose, and the in-game guide says this loss is configurable. If another energy transmitter is inside the area of effect, they keep each other balanced automatically, with no loss.[39]

For power on the move, the Pocket Ferricore Generator takes coal or this mod's upgraded coals, and higher tier fuels give more FE per tick. It also accepts a Fuel Canister. The armor tiers store FE too: Celestigem pieces hold 10,000 FE and Eclipse Alloy pieces hold 500,000 FE.[11][12][13][32][40]

The Fuel Canister stores any fuel except lava buckets. Put it into furnaces or generators and they draw from it, so you don't waste a whole coal on one ore. There is no way to get the items back out. Fuel from this mod also carries a fuel multiplier, which is averaged with what is already in the canister, and the tooltip shows what you will get.[40]

Fluids

The Simple Fluid Collector tries to collect any fluid in front of it into its internal buffer, but it only holds 1 fluid at a time. Its item slot can fill an empty bucket or a fluid container. The Advanced Fluid Collector covers a larger area, and you place a bucket of the right fluid in its filter slots to choose what it picks up.[41][42]

The Simple Fluid Placer has a tank on its left side showing which fluid is stored. Once enough fluid has built up, and there isn't already a fluid or block in front of the machine, it places the fluid into the world. The Advanced Fluid Placer works over a larger area, and its filter slots choose which blocks it places fluids on.[43][44]

The Fluid Canister holds up to 8 buckets. Right-click places or picks up liquid like a bucket. Shift right-click cycles auto-filling of other fluid containers in your inventory between 'None', Just Dire Things items only, and 'ALL' (including other mods).[32][45]

The Experience Holder is also a fluid tank. It converts experience into XP Fluid at 20mb per 1 experience point, and you can pull the fluid out with a bucket, a Fluid Canister, or pipes and similar mods. It keeps its experience when broken.[46]

Moving and handling items

The Item Collector acts like an advanced machine even though it is made from Tier 1 resources. It vacuums up item entities in its area and deposits them in the inventory it is attached to. You can filter what it picks up and raise the pickup speed.[47]

The Player Accessor lets hoppers or pipes insert into or extract from a player's inventory. The UI lets you choose which side reaches which slots, for example the top face handling armor and the bottom face the offhand.[48]

The Inventory Holder works like a chest with a player-style layout. Ctrl-click an item in it to save that item (and its stack size) as a filter for the slot. 'Filtered Items Only' blocks inserts into unfiltered slots, and 'Compare Stack Sizes' limits filtered slots to their saved size. These settings apply to pipes and hoppers too. When extracting, slots with a filter are ignored.[49]

The Simple Dropper lets you set the direction, the stack size dropped each time, and a pickup delay (default 0, so items can be grabbed immediately). Set to 64, it drops as many items as it has, even if that is fewer than 64.[50]

Breaking, placing, clicking and swapping

The Simple Block Breaker needs a tool to work. It breaks the block it faces, and damages the tool (or uses power) each time, just like a player would. The pack changed its crafting recipe from the mod's default.[51][52]

This is the pack's version of the recipe.

The Advanced Block Breaker has a 'filter block' mode (which BLOCKS to break) and a 'filter items' mode (which item drops to allow). In items mode, cobblestone in the filter lets it break stone or cobblestone, unless the pick has silk touch. The Simple Block Placer places the block held in its inventory in front of it when powered, and the Advanced Block Placer filters which blocks it can place on, respecting its direction setting.[53][54][55]

The Simple Clicker simulates right-click, left-click or hold-click using the item in its slot (or nothing, for buttons). The target button picks what it clicks: blocks, air, hostile, passive, adult, child, player or all living. The Advanced Clicker adds a larger area and filtering, and can be used as a mob farm (set to left click hostiles) or an animal breeder (set to right click adults).[56][57]

Swappers work in pairs. Place two, then use a Ferricore Wrench on the first and then the second, and a message confirms they are bound. They swap blocks and/or entities in front of them. Block entities like chests swap fine. The Advanced Swapper adds an area and filters, and its radius setting copies to its partner.[32][58][59][60]

The Simple Sensor detects blocks or entities in its area and emits a redstone signal when its conditions are met. Advanced sensors can count matches, for example emitting a signal when there are fewer than 10 adult cows so a clicker can feed them.[61][62]

Goo

Goo transforms certain blocks placed next to it. To use it: craft a goo block and place it, feed it the resource the goo block asks for to activate it, then put an eligible block beside it. After a transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating by feeding it another item. While inactive it can't start new transformations, but ongoing ones finish. Higher tier goo can do everything a lower tier can, and is much faster.[4]

Primogel Goo, the first tier of goo, is crafted from simple Overworld materials.

  • Primogel Goo turns Iron into Ferricore.[5]
  • Blazebloom Goo turns Gold into Blazegold.[6]
  • VoidShimmer Goo turns Diamonds into Celestigem.[7]
  • Shadowpulse Goo turns Netherite into Eclipse Alloy.[8]

Time machinery

The Time Wand needs both Forge Energy and Time Fluid. Right click any ticking block, like a furnace or crops, and it runs twice as fast. Click again for 4x, then 8x, and so on up to the wand's maximum. Each boost uses FE and Time Fluid depending on how big the speed jump is, and it lasts 30 seconds.[32][63]

In this pack, Time Crystal can also come from a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe that the pack changed.[52]

Time Crystal, WaxChanged by the pack

Centrifuge (productivebees)

The Paradox Machine snapshots an area, recording entities and blocks (Raw Ores only), and later restores what you cleared. It needs a lot of power and Time Fluid, and a button toggles entities only, blocks only, or both. Restored entities may not be exactly identical. Overuse builds up paradox energy, shown on the UI, and can spawn a Paradox that consumes blocks, items and entities in its area. Feeding it a Time Crystal seals it shut.[64][65]

How do you progress through Just Dire Things?

4 parts

Progression in Just Dire Things is built around four material tiers, and each one is unlocked by its own goo. Primogel Goo turns Iron into Ferricore, Blazebloom Goo turns Gold into Blazegold, VoidShimmer Goo turns Diamonds into Celestigem, and Shadowpulse Goo turns Netherite into Eclipse Alloy. The pack's quests follow that same order.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

How goo works

  1. Craft a goo block and place it in your world.[4]
  2. Activate the goo by feeding it the resource it consumes. The goo block shows you which one.[4]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[4]
Tip: After a transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. While it's inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes. Higher tier goo can do everything a lower tier can, and does it much faster.[4]

Tier by tier

The goo tiers also gate the fuel line. Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal and Eclipse Ember each have a quest, and each one comes after the matching goo quest. The refined fuel buckets (Blaze Ember Fuel Bucket, Voidflame Fuel Bucket and Eclipse Ember Fuel Bucket) follow the same order.[9]

Tools and armor

Every tier has its own tool and armor set, and the main chapter has a quest for each piece. You can craft Blazegold and Celestigem gear directly, or upgrade the previous tier's piece at a smithing table. The upgrade needs that tier's template, and each template has its own quest. Here's the Blazegold pickaxe upgrade as an example.[9][52][66]

Smithing Transform

Ferricore to Blazegold. The Celestigem gear upgrades the Blazegold piece the same way, using Celestigem and its template.

Upgrading in a smithing table keeps the upgrades you've already installed. Upgrade items are installed the same way, with the tool or armor and the upgrade item together in a smithing table. The quest for Upgrade: Blank comes after the Ferricore quest.[9][10][66]

Celestigem also gets a Celestigem Paxel, shown below. Eclipse Alloy has a paxel quest too. The wands are tied to the tiers as well: the quest for Blazejet Wand follows Blazegold, Voidshift Wand follows Celestigem, and Eclipsegate Wand follows Eclipse Alloy.[9][52]

Paxel (justdirethings)

The Celestigem paxel combines three Celestigem tools.

Machines follow the tiers

Most machines come in a simple and an advanced version. Simple ones don't need power and mostly affect the block or entity right in front of them. Advanced ones need power, cover a large area and have filters. The pack changed the recipes for the simple and advanced block breaker, placer, clicker, dropper and swapper, so don't rely on your memory of the mod's defaults.[28][52]

The quests for the simple Simple Block Breaker, Simple Block Placer, Simple Clicker and Simple Dropper come right after the Ferricore quest. Simple Swapper sits behind the Blazegold quest instead.[9][52]

How does Just Dire Things work with other mods?

3 parts

Just Dire Things doesn't live in a bubble in this pack. Its materials and goo show up in Productive Bees, in the Patchouli guide book, and in a couple of very expensive endgame crafts. Here's every connection the recipe data confirms.[52]

Guide Book

The pack changed the recipe for the Guide Book so that it takes an item from this mod, Primogel Goo, as part of the recipe. It's shapeless, so layout doesn't matter. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[52]

Productive Bees

This is the biggest crossover. The pack changed the Productive Bees recipes so that each tier of goo from this mod converts into a matching metal bee, and the honeycombs from those bees give you this mod's resources.[52]

The Time bee has its own crafting recipe too. It turns a configurable bee into the matching spawn egg, using items from this mod:[52]

Philosopher's Fuel is even bigger. It pulls one item from each of eight different mods, and this mod's contribution is the Eclipse Ember Block. Start planning that Eclipse Ember supply early.[52]

Unverified The quest data available for this section only covers the Just Dire Things chapter, and part of it is cut off, so quests that link this mod to other mods could not be confirmed.

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Just Dire Things?

4 parts

Just Dire Things has its own quest chapter in the pack, plus a few quests in the general tool, armor and building chapters. The quests ask you to obtain items, and the sources don't show their titles, descriptions or rewards. This section follows the quest dependencies to show the order.[9][68][69][70]

The main chapter: the goo, metal and fuel ladder

The chapter starts with a quest in "?", which asks for Primogel Goo. Three quests unlock right after it, so you can pick your order.[9]

From there the chapter climbs through four material and fuel stages. Each stage unlocks the next one.[9]

  1. Ferricore: the ingot quest leads to a full set of Ferricore tools and armor, such as a quest in "?" for the Ferricore Sword and a quest in "?" for the Ferricore Helmet. It also leads to the first machines, including the Simple Block Breaker, Simple Block Placer, Simple Clicker and Ferricore Coal Generator, and to the Ferricore Wrench and Machine Settings Copier.[9]
  2. Blazegold: after the Blazebloom Goo quest, a quest in "?" asks for Raw Blazegold and Blazegold Ingot. a quest in "?" asks for Blaze Ember and needs both the Primal Coal and Blazebloom Goo quests done. Blazegold unlocks its own tools and armor, the Portal Gun, the Creature Catcher, the Totem of Death Recall and the Blazejet Wand.[9]
  3. Celestigem: a quest in "?" asks for VoidShimmer Goo, and a quest in "?" then asks for the Celestigem. a quest in "?" asks for Voidflame Coal. Celestigem unlocks its tools, armor and Celestigem Paxel (via a quest in "?"), the Advanced Portal Gun, the Voidshift Wand and the Advanced machines, such as the Advanced Clicker and Advanced Block Breaker.[9]
  4. Eclipse Alloy: a quest in "?" asks for Shadowpulse Goo, and a quest in "?" asks for Raw Eclipse Alloy and Eclipse Alloy Ingot. a quest in "?" asks for Eclipse Ember. The Eclipse Alloy gear includes the Eclipse Alloy Paxel and the Eclipsegate Wand.[9]

Fluid buckets

The fluid line starts at a quest in "?" for the Polymorphic Fluid Bucket, followed by a quest in "?" for the Portal Fluid Bucket. The fuel buckets come next, each needing the matching ember or coal quest as well: a quest in "?" for the Blaze Ember Fuel Bucket, a quest in "?" for the Voidflame Fuel Bucket and a quest in "?" for the Eclipse Ember Fuel Bucket.[9]

Templates and upgrades

Each metal has a template quest: a quest in "?" for Template: Ferricore, a quest in "?" for Template: Blazegold, a quest in "?" for Template: Celestigem and a quest in "?" for Template: Eclipse Alloy. Each template quest also needs its metal quest, and each also needs the same shared gating quest, which is outside the list I have. a quest in "?" covers Upgrade: Blank.[9]

The chapter also has one quest per upgrade, and two shared gating quests unlock them. One group includes a quest in "?" for Upgrade: Flight, a quest in "?" for Upgrade: Elytra and a quest in "?" for Upgrade: Death Protection. The other group includes a quest in "?" for Upgrade: Treefeller, a quest in "?" for Upgrade: Smelter and a quest in "?" for Upgrade: Hammer. a quest in "?" for Upgrade: Ore Scanner has a checkmark task alongside the item.[9]

Quests in other chapters

Unverified Quest titles, descriptions and rewards aren't in the sources I have, and neither are the quests that unlock the start of each chapter, so this guide can't confirm them.
