Roots Classic is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 1.21.1-1.5.9. Create magic wands and perform druidic rituals (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Roots Classic?

2 parts

Roots Classic is a nature-magic mod built around rituals. The pack ships version 1.21.1-1.5.9. The quest book describes it as using nature's gifts to perform rituals, and it says the mod may look small in JEI but has a lot more to it than that.[1][2]

On the ATM Star path

Roots Classic has its own stop on the ATM Star path. The "Roots Classic" quest quest asks you to get a Verdant Sprig. The follow-up quest, a quest in "The ATM Star", asks for a Crystal Staff.[2]

You make the staff with a ritual. Set up a Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI, and put Incense Braziers around the altar. Light the braziers with Flint and Steel, then Shift Right Click the altar to start. If the ritual fails, the quest says to check the Standing Stone pattern first.[2]

Gear in the quest book

The pack's quests also use Roots Classic gear. The Basic Tools chapter includes a quest for the Engraved Blade, listed at 12 attack damage. It also has quests for the Living Sword and Living Pickaxe. Each of those two quests also accepts a Nature's Aura tool instead.[3]

The Basic Armor chapter has Roots Classic armor sets. "Sylvan Gear" quest is the basic set: Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots. The quest warns that you need a ritual to get it. "Wildwood Gear" quest is the late-game set: Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[4]

How do you get started with Roots Classic?

6 parts

Roots Classic is all about using nature's gifts to perform rituals, and the pack's quest book says it looks small in JEI but has a lot to it. Everything starts with one item: the Runic Tablet. It's the mod's guidebook and explains all the spells and rituals, and most other items in the mod point you back to it.[2][5]

Craft the Runic Tablet

The tablet needs Old Root, a basic spell component that drops from tall grass. Break some grass first to collect it.[5][6]

Get a Bark Knife and start collecting bark

Rituals use bark, and the Bark Knife is how you get it. Right-click a log with it to peel bark off. There's a chance of breaking the log, so don't peel your only tree. Barks such as Oak Bark, Birch Bark, Acacia Bark and Jungle Bark all come from using a Bark Knife on a log.[5][6]

Mortar and Pestle

The Mortar and Pestle are used together to create spells. Some pack recipes also want a Pestle, such as Growth Powder and Healing Poultice, so it's worth making both early.[5][6]

Build your ritual setup

Rituals revolve around the Casting Altar, the centerpiece for casting. Around it you place standing stones in a pattern. The Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one. The Incense Brazier holds the incense that burns during rituals.[2][5][6]

The pack's quest book walks through a ritual like this. The flow is worth learning once:[2]

  1. Place the Casting Altar and the Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI.[2]
  2. Put the ritual's items into the Altar, then place 4 Incense Braziers around it and load them with the bark and other items the recipe asks for.[2]
  3. Light all the Braziers with a Flint and Steel.[2]
  4. Shift Right Click the Altar to start the ritual. If nothing happens, double-check the Standing Stone pattern.[2]

Your first ritual: living tools

A good first ritual is the Living Sword or Living Pickaxe. Living tools are self-repairing, and the pack changes both ritual recipes from the mod's own. The quest book says the pickaxe turns blocks it interacts with into their mossy variants, if they have one.[3][5][6]

Staffs and armor

Next up is the Crystal Staff, an advanced spellcasting staff. The pack changes its ritual recipe too. Staffs in general are made by using Spell Powder on the Imbuer.[5][6]

Tip: The quest text for the Crystal Staff mentions Verdant Bark, but the in-pack recipe uses a Verdant Sprig, so follow the recipe above.[2][6]

For protection, the quest book lists Sylvan gear as the basic armor from this mod, and you need a ritual to get it. The Wildwood set is the late-game armor. Both sets are ritual crafts with pack-changed recipes, so check them in JEI when you're ready.[4][6]

How does Roots Classic work?

6 parts

Roots Classic is built around rituals and spells. In this pack the items you use include the casting altar, standing stones, incense braziers, spell powder and staffs. This section covers what the Runic Tablet descriptions explain, which is the ritual and spell side of the mod.[5]

The Runic Tablet is your rulebook

The Runic Tablet is the guidebook for Roots Classic, and it explains all spells and rituals. Many item descriptions in the mod point you back to it, so craft it first.[5]

Gathering magic materials

Many of the mod's inputs come from ordinary world interactions, as random drops. These are the ones the Runic Tablet describes:[5]

  • Old Root: found at a 1/40 chance when breaking tall grass. It is needed for a lot of early magic, as it is required for spells without modifiers.[5]
  • Verdant Sprig: drops at a 1/30 chance when harvesting fully-grown crops. Its uses often relate to bringing life to objects.[5]
  • Infernal Bulbs: drop at a 1/20 chance from grown nether wart. They are useful when a large amount of energy is needed.[5]
  • Dragon's Eyes: drop at a 1/10 chance from chorus flowers.[5]
  • Berries: when breaking some leaves by hand, you may occasionally find a random berry. There are five different kinds, each with different properties, and some appear as spell components such as Blackcurrant, Redcurrant, Whitecurrant and Elderberry.[5][6]

Bark is gathered with the Bark Knife. Right-click a log block to harvest bark from it, with a chance of breaking the log block. The bark can be used in recipes and rituals.[5]

Spells: mortar, pestle and spell powder

Staffs and the Imbuer

The Imbuer is where staffs come from: its description says you can create any magical staff using Spell Powder, and the staff's own description says it is created using Spell Powder on the Imbuer. The Runic Tablet has the crafting details.[5]

The crystal staff is the upgrade. It stores spells indefinitely and can hold up to four at a time. Adding spells requires a separate ritual, where you may add up to four additional Spell Powders as incenses. The tablet says each of these is added to the staff, overwriting previous spells if necessary. Sneak and right-click to cycle through the staff's spells.[5]

Watch out: The crystal staff must be used while standing on natural blocks like dirt, grass, leaves or log blocks. Otherwise, the staff will tap into the user's own life force to cast spells.[5]

Rituals: altar, braziers and standing stones

The Casting Altar is the center piece for casting rituals. The Incense Brazier holds incense to burn during rituals. The Mundane Standing Stone is the basic ritual stone, and the Attuned Standing Stone is the advanced one. Both are used to create ritual patterns as shown in the Runic Tablet.[5][6]

There are also special standing stones whose crafting rituals are defined in the Runic Tablet. Each has its own effect:[5]

  • Accelerator: a speed beacon.[5]
  • Entangler: a slowness beacon.[5]
  • Healer: a regeneration beacon.[5]
  • Grower: a growth booster for your plants.[5]
  • Igniter: burns your enemies.[5]
  • Repulsor repulses nearby stuff, and Vacuum vacuums nearby stuff.[5]
  • Aesthetic: a standing stone for decoration.[5]

Rituals are also used to obtain gear and creatures. The living tools (axe, hoe, pickaxe, shovel and sword) are self-repairing and obtained using a magic ritual. The Sylvan and Wildwood armor sets are obtained using a magic ritual too. Runic and charged runic foci store energy for Roots rituals. For animal summoning, the tablet says that given the flesh and bones of a passive mob, these rituals will bring that mob back to life on top of the altar.[5]

Growth and mutating powders

Growth Powder can grow grass on dirt. Right-click to throw it at a block within 4 blocks of you, growing grass in a small area. Mutating Powder mutates flora in magical ways, but it is only used in very specific circumstances, specified in the spell components section of the tablet.[5][6]

How do you progress through Roots Classic?

4 parts

Roots Classic is all about using nature's gifts to power rituals. The pack's quest line opens with the "Roots Classic" quest quest, which asks for a Verdant Sprig. The quest also says the mod looks small in JEI but has a lot to it.[2]

Step 1: Your first ritual, the Crystal Staff

The next quest in the chain asks you to craft the Crystal Staff. This is your introduction to how rituals work. You build the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern shown in JEI, set out 4 Incense Brazier blocks around it, light them with Flint and Steel, then Shift Right Click the altar to start.[2][6]

If the ritual doesn't start, the quest says to check your Standing Stone pattern first. This pack has changed the Crystal Staff ritual from the mod's default. The quest text calls one of the barks "Verdant Bark", but the pack's recipe uses a Verdant Sprig, so follow the recipe below.[2][6]

Step 2: Tools

The Basic Tools chapter has three quests. Two of them accept either a Roots Classic tool or an infused iron tool from another mod. The Living Sword quest is labelled 6 Attack Damage, and the Living Pickaxe quest is labelled Tier: 3. The pickaxe quest's text says the tool turns blocks it interacts with into their mossy variants, if they have one.[3]

The pack has changed the ritual recipes for both of these Living tools, and they are shown below. The same is true of the Living Axe, Living Hoe and Living Shovel, which you can look up in JEI.[6]

The strongest tool in the chapter is the Engraved Blade, labelled 12 Attack Damage. It is crafted from a Runic Focus, and the pack has changed the Runic Focus ritual. The Engraved Blade ritual itself is the mod's own recipe.[3][6]

Step 3: Armor

The Basic Armor chapter starts with the "Sylvan Gear" quest quest, which wants the full set: Sylvan Hood, Sylvan Robe, Sylvan Tunic and Sylvan Boots. It calls this basic armor and reminds you that it needs a ritual.[4]

The Wildwood Gear quest is the late-game armor for the mod. It wants Wildwood Mask, Wildwood Plate, Wildwood Leggings and Wildwood Boots.[4]

Every piece in both sets is a ritual recipe the pack has changed. Each piece has its own recipe in JEI, and these two are examples.[6]

Beyond the quests: Standing Stones

The quests I can see don't cover Standing Stone upgrades. The ritual recipes for the Growing Standing Stone and Vacuum Standing Stone come from the mod itself and are shown below. Among the special stones, only the Healing Standing Stone and Igniting Standing Stone rituals are pack-changed, and so is the Charged Runic Focus ritual. The recipe for the Attuned Standing Stone is shown below as well.[6]

How does Roots Classic work with other mods?

2 parts

Roots Classic doesn't have a lot of crossover with other mods in this pack, but there are a few connections worth knowing. They show up in one pack-added recipe and in the early tool quests.[3][6]

Crystal Staff in the Pulsating Black Hole

The Crystal Staff is one of the inputs for the Pulsating Black Hole. It sits in that recipe alongside items from a wide range of other mods. This recipe was added by the pack through KubeJS, so you won't find it in the mods' own defaults.[6]

Tip: The Crystal Staff comes from a ritual. The Roots Classic quest a quest in "The ATM Star" walks you through the altar setup, so do that early if you're heading toward the Pulsating Black Hole.[2][6]

Roots tools next to Nature's Aura tools

The Basic Tools quests accept items from Roots Classic or from Nature's Aura. Either one completes the quest, so you can pick whichever is easier for you.[3]

Unverified No other in-pack recipes or quests linking Roots Classic with other mods were found in the available sources. The armor quests and the Engraved Blade quest only use Roots Classic items.

Which All the Mons quests use Roots Classic?

3 parts

Roots Classic shows up in three quest chapters in the pack: The ATM Star, Basic Tools and Basic Armor. The ATM Star chapter is where the mod is introduced, and its quest text says Roots is all about making rituals.[2][3][4]

The ATM Star: your intro to Roots

  1. "Roots Classic" quest asks you to obtain a Verdant Sprig. The quest text says Roots Classic may look small in JEI but has a lot to it, and that it is all about using nature's gifts to make rituals.[2]
  2. a quest in "The ATM Star" unlocks after that and asks for a Crystal Staff. It is your first ritual.[2]

The Crystal Staff quest text walks you through the ritual. You place the Casting Altar and Standing Stones in the pattern JEI shows, fill the altar, and set up four Incense Braziers around it. Then you light them all with a Flint and Steel and Shift Right Click the altar to start. If it doesn't work, check the Standing Stones pattern first.[2]

Basic Tools

This chapter has three Roots Classic quests, and each one follows the chapter's Basic Tools quest.[3]

Basic Armor

This chapter has armor quests for a Sylvan set and a Wildwood set. Each one asks you to hand in every piece of the set.[4]
