What is Forbidden and Arcanus ?
2 parts
Forbidden & Arcanus adds magical-themed content in a style that could fit vanilla, plus a big set of new building blocks. This pack ships version 2.6.1 of it.[1][2]
In this pack, the quest book sums it up as using the Arcane to perform rituals with the Forge and become stronger. Most people know it for the Eternal Stella, but there's more to the mod than that.[3]
Where it fits in the ATM Star path
If you're going for the ATM Star, you'll be using this mod. It has its own steps in the ATM Star chapter, and it also has its own quest chapter with the full progression.[3][4]
- The path starts with "Forbidden & Arcanus" quest, which asks you to get an Arcane Crystal.[3]
- Next comes the Smelter Prism. You'll most likely need it for later recipes, and a Tier 1 Forge is enough to make it. It also needs Elementarium, which turns up in Jungle Temples, Desert Pyramids and Underwater Ruins.[3]
- The Eternal Stella is the expensive one and needs a Tier 3 Forge. According to the quest, the Xpetried Orbs it needs can no longer be mined. You get them by feeding a Black Hole experience instead.[3]
- The quest text says the Eternal Stella can be combined with any tool to make it invincible.[3]
What to gather early
Darkstone generates deep underground near lava lakes, for example around Y -54. The quest book says it is the most used block in the mod and that every multiblock uses it as a base, so it tells you to grab a ton of it.[4]
Arcane Crystal generates from Y 14 down to -40 and is most common at Y -13. The quest book warns you'll need a lot of it.[4]
In the Forge, Aureal is the first and most important slot. You can automate it with Arcane Crystal Obelisks or deposit Aureal Bottle items.[4]
How do you get started with Forbidden and Arcanus ?
8 parts
Forbidden & Arcanus is about using the Arcane to run rituals at the Forge, and almost everything you build for it starts from Darkstone. Here is the order to go in, and why each step feeds the next.[3][4]
Gather Darkstone and Arcane Crystals
Start by mining. Darkstone appears deep underground near lava lakes, around Y -54, and every multiblock uses it for its base, so grab a ton. Arcane Crystal spawns from Y 14 down to Y -40 and is most common at Y -13. You will need a lot of it. The matching quests are "Darkstone" quest and "Arcane Crystals" quest.[4]
If you would rather not hunt for Darkstone, this pack adds a crafting recipe that turns Mystical Agriculture Darkstone Essence into it.[5]
Polish your Darkstone
Polished Darkstone is used for both the Clibano and the Forge. You can craft it, and this pack also adds a Create sandpaper polishing recipe for it.[4][5]

Make Arcane Crystal Dust
Arcane Crystal Dust is simple: smelt your Arcane Crystals. Mundabitur Dust, Deorum and the Aureal Bottle all need it.[4][5]
Smelting
Recipe id: forbidden_arcanus:smelting/arcane_crystal_dust_from_smelting
Craft Mundabitur Dust
Mundabitur Dust is a very important part of making multiblocks: you right-click a finished structure with it to bring it to life. The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below.[4][5]

Make Deorum
Deorum Ingot is the foundational alloy of the mod, and you will need dozens of it, especially for the building blocks of the multiblock machines. The pack changes this recipe too.[4][5]

Build the Hephaestus Forge
Now you can make the Forge pieces. The in-game ponder lists 9 Gilded Chiseled Polished Darkstone, 4 Chiseled Arcane Polished Darkstone and 45 Polished Darkstone. Place a Smithing Table in the center, keep that area clear, then hit it with Mundabitur Dust to get the Forge. Finally, put Darkstone Pedestal blocks on the 8 outer gilded blocks. The quest is "Building the Forge" quest.[4][6]

Prepare the Forge's slots
The Forge needs Aureal, Souls, Blood and Experience, in that order of slots. Aureal comes first and is the most important. You can craft Aureal Bottle or find them in chests in most structures.[4]
For Blood, either kill mobs on or near the Forge, or fill a Test Tube by keeping it in your offhand while you kill mobs and then deposit it. The Souls slot is the smallest, needing only 10.[4]
Next: the Clibano
When you are ready for Obsidiansteel, build the Clibano, a multiblock that acts like a jumbo furnace. It uses Clibano Core and Polished Darkstone Bricks, and you finish it with Mundabitur Dust. It can also give back a few bits of Arcane Crystals when you process them. The quest is "Clibano" quest, which comes after the Darkstone quest.[4]

How does Forbidden and Arcanus work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
The centerpiece of Forbidden & Arcanus is the Hephaestus Forge. You build a base out of darkstone blocks, transform it into the forge, and then use it for rituals. Everything below comes from the mod's in-game Ponder scenes, its JEI categories and the pack's recipe data.[7][8]
Building the Hephaestus Forge
The forge starts as a base structure that you build first and then transform. The Ponder scene lists these blocks for the base:[7]
- 9x Gilded Chiseled Polished Darkstone[7]
- 4x Chiseled Arcane Polished Darkstone[7]
- 45x Polished Darkstone[7]
- Build the base structure from the blocks above.[7]
- Place a Smithing Table in the center of the structure.[7]
- Keep the marked area clear, because the structure needs that space to transform into the forge.[7]
The pack has a crafting recipe for Arcane Polished Darkstone, which you'll want to look at when you're gathering materials for the arcane parts of the base.[8]

Arcane Polished Darkstone as crafted in this pack
Unverified How you make the Chiseled Arcane Polished Darkstone and the Gilded Chiseled Polished Darkstone is not covered by the available sources. Check JEI in game. This site does hold All the Mons's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Pedestals and Obelisks
Once the forge is built, you can place Darkstone Pedestals in set spots around it. The pedestals hold the items for a ritual, so they work as the forge's input slots.[7]
Arcane Crystal Obelisks fit in those same spots. Instead of holding items, they passively generate Aureal. Because pedestals and obelisks share the same spaces, you'll need to decide how many spots go to ritual items and how many go to Aureal generation.[7]
Unverified How much Aureal an obelisk generates, how many pedestal spots the forge has, and what a ritual consumes are not stated in the available sources.
Aureal Bottles
The pack has a crafting recipe for the Aureal Bottle, and its ingredients come from the arcane crystal line of items.[8]
Unverified What the Aureal Bottle does, and whether it stores Aureal or supplies it to the forge, is not confirmed by the available sources.
Upgrading the Forge and Smithing
JEI has a category called Hephaestus Forge Upgrading, so the forge has an upgrade path of its own. The mod also adds a Smithing Template and a darkstone upgrade template whose base slot takes an armor piece, weapon or tool.[7][8]

Recipe id: forbidden_arcanus:apply_modifier_smithing_template
Unverified The requirements for each forge upgrade, the modifiers the smithing template can apply, and the role of the Reinforced Deorum Blacksmith Gavel are not explained in the available sources. Browse the Hephaestus Forge Upgrading category in JEI for the in-pack details. This site does hold All the Mons's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Getting Darkstone
The forge base alone uses 45 Polished Darkstone, so you'll want a steady supply of darkstone. In this pack, All the Compressed has a decompression recipe that gives you Darkstone, and the pack has changed that recipe.[7][8]

Unverified The available sources don't cover automation, item or fluid handling, or power for the forge. It isn't confirmed whether pipes or hoppers can insert items into pedestals or whether rituals can be started automatically.
How do you progress through Forbidden and Arcanus ?
7 parts
Forbidden & Arcanus in this pack is built around one multiblock, the Hephaestus Forge (Hephaestus Forge Tier 1). You power its rituals with four materials: Aureal, Souls, Blood and Experience. You also upgrade the Forge itself through rituals. The quests follow that same path, so this section does too.[4][9]
Stage 1: Gather the base materials
Everything starts underground. Darkstone shows up deep down near lava lakes, at a level like Y -54, and the quest says all multiblocks use it for their base, so grab a ton of it. Arcane Crystal spawns from Y 14 to -40 and is most common at Y -13. Rune spawns from bedrock up to Y 2, so you can find it near Darkstone too.[4]
Stellarite Piece spawns between Y 42 and -44 but is very rare.[4]
The pack gives you other routes too. Darkstone can come from a decompress recipe the pack changed, or from a pack-added Mystical Agriculture crafting recipe. Arcane Crystal, Rune and Stellarite Piece each have a pack-added Theurgy incubation recipe.[5]
Polished Darkstone is a normal crafting recipe, and the pack also adds a Create sandpaper polishing recipe for it.[5]

Stage 2: Dusts and Deorum
Smelt Arcane Crystals to get Arcane Crystal Dust. The Clibano can also process them. Mundabitur Dust is described by the quest as an important part of crafting and making multiblocks, and the pack changed its recipe from the mod default.[4][5]

Stage 3: Build the Tier 1 Forge
The Forge uses Polished Darkstone, Arcane Polished Darkstone and Gilded Chiseled Polished Darkstone in a pattern, plus a Smithing Table. You place the Smithing Table on the inner Gilded Chiseled Polished Darkstone and hit it with Mundabitur Dust. Then put Darkstone Pedestal blocks on top of the 8 outer Gilded Chiseled Polished Darkstone blocks. The Forge's tooltip shows how to build it.[4][9]

Stage 4: Feed the Forge
- Aureal is the first and most important slot. Deposit Aureal Bottle items or potions, or automate it with an Arcane Crystal Obelisk.[4]
- Souls need only 10 to fill the slot. Each Soul and Corrupt Soul counts as 1, and an Enchanted Soul counts as all 10. The quest calls the Soul Extractor, used on Soul Sand, the best way of getting Souls.[4]
- Blood is the third slot. Kill mobs on or near the Forge, or deposit filled Test Tube items. To fill one, hold it in your offhand while killing mobs.[4]
- Experience is the fourth slot. You can use Xpetrified Orbs (the most EXP), Bottle o' Enchanting, or enchanted items.[4]

Relics and side steps
Several relics are found in the world. The Artisan Relic is found in a few buildings in villages, and Crimson Stone is found in Pillager Outposts and decreases Soul usage in the Forge. Elementarium is needed for Prisms and is found in Jungle Temples, Desert Pyramids and Underwater Ruins. Divine Pact is the hardest to obtain, found in Piglin Villages and Ancient Pyramids in The Other.[4]
Obsidiansteel is made in the Clibano, and you need an Artisan Relic to make it. It leads on to the Obsidian Skull and the Black Hole in the quest book.[4]

The Corrupt Souls quest says Growing Edelwood is now the only way of getting Edelwood. The Black Hole is how you get Xpetrified Orbs: throw Dark Matter and Corrupti Dust on the ground together, then feed the Black Hole enough EXP and it gives back an Xpetrified Orb. Dark Matter is made by smelting Edelwood, using a smelting recipe the pack added.[4][5]
Added by the pack.
Forge tiers
- Tier 1: The Smelter Prism quest says you only need a Tier 1 Forge for it, plus Elementarium. The Ferrognetic Mixture and Quantum Catcher quests also come after the Tier 1 Forge and Finishing the Ritual.[3][4]
- Tier 2: The Terrastomp Prism quest calls it the only recipe that needs Tier 2. Tools with this prism can mine a 3x3 area.[4]
- Tier 3: In the quest book the Quantum Injector, Sea Prism, Whirlwind Prism and Eternal Stella come after the Tier 3 Forge. The quest says the Whirlwind Prism is only used for the end game.[4]
- Tier 4: In the quest book the Boss Catcher and the Soul Binding Crystal come after the Tier 4 Forge. The Crystal also needs a Divine Pact. The Corrupt Souls quest mentions a Tier 4 Forge recipe and says it is not something to worry about right now.[4]
The goal: Eternal Stella
Eternal Stella needs a Tier 3 Forge, 1 Allthemodium Ingot, 3 Xpetrified Orbs and a Stellarite Piece. The quest says those orbs can no longer be mined, so you feed a Black Hole to get them. Combine the Stella with an item in a Smithing Table to make it unbreakable, or use it to craft alloy tools. It only works on items with durability, not on items that use charges or energy.[3][4][9]
How does Forbidden and Arcanus work with other mods?
6 parts
Forbidden & Arcanus is wired into a lot of the other mods in this pack. Most of the links are recipes the pack added or changed, so here is where its items show up outside the mod itself.[5]
Darkstone and compression
Darkstone can be compressed into Darkstone 1x and turned back again. The pack changed both of these recipes. The quest book calls Darkstone the most used block for the mod, says all Multiblocks will use it for their base, and tells you to grab a ton of it.[4][5]

Sawing the mod's wood
The pack adds sawing recipes for Aurum Planks, Edelwood Planks and Fungyss Planks in both Mekanism and Productive Trees. With Mekanism's sawing, the logs or stems give you planks plus Sawdust. With the Productive Trees sawmill, Sawdust goes in as an input instead.[5]

Productive Bees
The pack changed the Productive Bees recipes for this mod. One bee conversion recipe takes an Arcane Crystal Block and gives the Arcane Crystal bee, and another takes a Rune Block and gives the Rune bee.[5]

The centrifuge recipes for the matching honeycombs were changed as well. Each one gives Wax plus a Forbidden & Arcanus item: Arcane Crystal, Deorum Nugget, Rune, or Stellarite Piece together with an Xpetrified Orb. That makes bees a way to get these materials without mining.[5]
Centrifuge (productivebees)
Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/forbidden_arcanus/honeycomb_stellarite
Theurgy
Theurgy can make Arcane Crystal, Rune and Stellarite Piece through incubation recipes the pack added. Theurgy's liquefaction also turns Runes and Stellarite Pieces, together with Sal Ammoniac, into the matching Alchemical Sulfur.[5]
Liquefaction of Runes into runic sulfur.
Late-game crafts
Two pack-added recipes use Forbidden & Arcanus items alongside items from many other mods. Eternal Stella is one of the inputs for Oblivion Shard, and Smelter Prism is one of the inputs for Philosopher's Fuel.[5]

Prisms and quests
The Elementarium quest says Prisms matter for many Forbidden & Arcanus recipes and for other mods later on. You need Elementarium to craft them, and the quest says it turns up in Jungle Temples, Desert Pyramids and Underwater Ruins. See "Elementarium" quest.[4]
Which All the Mons quests use Forbidden and Arcanus ?
5 parts
Right now, the pack's quest book has Forbidden & Arcanus in four quest chapters. Most of it lives in its own chapter, Forbidden & Arcanus, and the other three only touch on it. I'll walk through the main chapter first, then the rest.[3][4][9][10]
Forbidden & Arcanus chapter
The chapter file lists no prerequisite for "Mundabitur Dust" quest or "Aureal" quest, so you can start with either. Mundabitur Dust is called an important part of crafting and of making multiblocks. Aureal is described as the first and most important slot in the Forge.[4]
As the quest book stands right now, the gathering quests come next: "Darkstone" quest, "Runes" quest, "Stellarite Pieces" quest and "Arcane Crystals" quest. Their texts say where each resource spawns. Darkstone is deep underground near lava lakes at Y -54, and Runes spawn from bedrock up to Y 2. Stellarite is very rare between Y 42 and -44, and it explodes when you break it. Arcane Crystals spawn from Y 14 to -40 and are most common at Y -13.[4]
Materials and the Forge
- "Arcane Crystal Dust" quest comes after Arcane Crystals. It is made by smelting the crystals, and the quest says the Clibano can give a few crystal bits back.[4]
- Right now, "Deorum" quest comes after Arcane Crystal Dust and Mundabitur Dust. It asks for Deorum Ingot, which the quest calls the foundational ingot of the mod. "Spectral Eye Amulet" quest follows it.[4]
- Right now, "Building the Forge" quest comes after Darkstone and Deorum. It has you build the Hephaestus Forge with a Smithing Table, Mundabitur Dust and Darkstone Pedestals.[4]
- "Arcane Crystal Obelisk" quest comes after Aureal and Arcane Crystals. The quest says the obelisk can be placed where the Forge pedestals go, to automate Aureal.[4]
Right now, the quests treat the Forge as needing four materials, each with its own quest. Aureal comes first. "Souls" quest is the second slot and only needs 10. "Blood" quest is the third, and it comes after Runes. "Experience" quest is the fourth, and it comes after Black Hole.[4]
Clibano, Edelwood and relics
Right now, "Clibano" quest comes after Darkstone and builds a multiblock that the quest says acts like a jumbo furnace. "Obsidiansteel" quest follows once you also have the Artisan Relic, and "Obsidian Skull" quest comes after that. "Black Hole" quest needs Obsidiansteel plus the fully grown Edelwood quest.[4]
The Edelwood line starts at "Corrupt Souls" quest. The quest says the Tier 4 Forge recipe for Corrupt Souls is not something to worry about right now, and that growing Edelwood with them is the only way of getting Edelwood. Next comes the untitled quest a quest in "Forbidden & Arcanus" for a fully grown Edelwood. More untitled quests branch off it: a quest in "Forbidden & Arcanus" for the Soul Extractor and a quest in "Forbidden & Arcanus" for the Edelwood Bucket. The Soul Extractor is also a prerequisite for the Souls quest.[4]
Right now, a group of quests hang off a quest called Relics. They are "Artisan Relic" quest, "Crimson Stone" quest, "Elementarium" quest and "Divine Pact" quest. Their texts point you to villages, pillager outposts, temples and ruins, and to Piglin villages and Ancient Pyramids in The Other.[4]
Forge tiers and prisms
Right now, the rest of the chapter follows the Forge tiers. "Finishing the Ritual" quest comes after the Tier 1 Forge and has you use a gavel to finish a ritual. Three quests then open up, all after the Tier 1 Forge and Finishing the Ritual: "Smelter Prism" quest, a quest in "Forbidden & Arcanus" and a quest in "Forbidden & Arcanus".[4]
- Right now, Tier 2 has "Terrastomp Prism" quest, which its text describes as the only recipe that needs Tier 2.[4]
- Right now, Tier 3 has "Quantum Injector" quest, "Sea Prism" quest, "Eternal Stella" quest and the untitled a quest in "Forbidden & Arcanus" for the Whirlwind Prism.[4]
- Right now, Tier 4 has the untitled a quest in "Forbidden & Arcanus" for the Boss Catcher, and "Soul Binding Crystal" quest, which also needs Divine Pact.[4]
Other chapters
- The ATM Star chapter opens with "Forbidden & Arcanus" quest, which has you submit an Arcane Crystal. After it come "Smelter Prism" quest, which needs only a Tier 1 Forge, and "Eternal Stella" quest, which needs a Tier 3 Forge.[3]
- The Allthemodium chapter has untitled quests for the mod. a quest in "Allthemodium" introduces the Hephaestus Forge and its four materials. a quest in "Allthemodium" comes after it and covers the Eternal Stella.[9]
- The Legendaries chapter uses the mod in its rituals. "Magearna" quest asks for an Enchanted Soul to finish the altar. "Deoxys" quest asks for a ring of Arcane Crystal Obelisk in its final rite.[10]
What changed in Forbidden and Arcanus between versions?
1 part
All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Forbidden and Arcanus 2.6.1. The mod has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier, so you've had it for a long time.[2]
Forbidden and Arcanus 2.6.1
This is the version in the pack right now, and it is mostly a bug-fix release. Here is what the mod's own changelog lists:[2][11]
- Fixed a crash that happened when Ponder is not installed.[11]
- Fixed Draco Arcanus and Tyr armor missing their armor tags.[11]
- Fixed Draco Arcanus and Tyr armor having infinite durability.[11]
The same release also adds the Aureal Wardstone as experimental content. It sits behind the Preview Feature Flag, so treat it as a preview feature rather than something finished.[11]
I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so this section only covers what the mod's 2.6.1 changelog says.[2][11]
