What is Cobblemon: Mega Showdown?

2 parts

Cobblemon: Mega Showdown adds Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Teralization, Dyna/Gigantamax, Ultra Burst and Fusions to Cobblemon. It includes 90+ Megas, all the gimmicks and all the form changes. This pack ships version 1.8.4+1.7.3+1.21.1 of the NeoForge build.[1][2]

All the gimmick items can be worn in their own Gimmick slots through the Accessories integration, so you don't have to choose between them and the other accessory mods you have installed. The mod is also very datapackable, which mainly matters if you want to make addons.[1]

Where it sits in the quest book

This pack gives the mod its own "Mega Showdown" quest chapter. Most of its quests follow on from the chapter's opening quest or from each other, and each one covers a single gimmick item. Here is what the chapter points you to:[3]

  • Terastallizing: you wear a Tera Orb to get permission to Terastallize. The quest says it is made with just vanilla items. Right click it to equip it, or use the Accessory screen.[3]
  • Stellar Tera Shards: Stellar Tera Shard has a 1% chance to drop when any Pokemon is defeated. Using 50 of them on a Pokemon Terastallizes it into the Stellar type. A Tera Pouch, for example Tera Pouch White, holds a stack of each type of Tera Shard.[3]
  • Dynamax: you need a Wishing Star and a Dynamax Band. A Power Spot is made from a Wishing Star and a Max Mushroom, which grows in Lush Caves. Dynamaxing needs a Power Spot at most 20 blocks away from the battle.[3]
  • Mega Evolution: mining the Mega Crystal with a Diamond Pickaxe or better gives you a Mega Stone. It does nothing on its own. You use it to craft the specific Mega Stone for a given Pokemon.[3]
  • Z-Moves: the Blank-Z is a blank starting point, and you craft it into a specific Z-Move.[3]
  • The Omni Ring combines the Z-Ring, Dynamax Band, Mega Bracelet and Tera Orb in one item. Its quest comes after "Tera Orb" quest, a quest in "Mega Showdown" (the Keystone), "Wishing Star" quest and a quest in "Mega Showdown" (the Sparkling Stones).[3]

The ATM Star path

Yes, the ATM Star path uses this mod. The "The ATM Star" chapter has the quest "Zygarde Cube" quest, which asks you to obtain a Zygarde Cube and comes after Mega Showdown. The quest says the pack wants you to make it in an Oritech Assembler, and the quest text walks you through where the parts come from.[4]

How do you get started with Cobblemon: Mega Showdown?

5 parts

Cobblemon: Mega Showdown adds Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Terastallization and Dynamax/Gigantamax to Cobblemon. In this pack, each gimmick needs its own item before you can use it. Here is the order I'd tackle them in, following the pack's Mega Showdown questline.[1][3]

Craft the Tera Orb first

Start here. You need permission to Terastallize, and you get it by wearing a Tera Orb. The quest "Tera Orb" quest says it is made with just vanilla items, and the pack has changed this recipe from the mod's version. Right-click it to equip it, or use the Accessory Screen.[3][5]

Make a Tera Pouch

Terastallizing takes a lot of Tera Shards, so a pouch saves you inventory space. A Tera Pouch holds a stack of each type of Tera Shard. The plain one is Tera Pouch, and there are colored variants too.[3][5]

Shards are the slow part. Stellar Tera Shard has a 1% chance to drop when any Pokemon is defeated, and using 50 of them on a Pokemon Terastallizes it into the Stellar type. The pack also has a Productive Bees recipe for a bee that produces Tera Shards, including the Stellar one.[3][5]

Get ready to Dynamax

The quest "Wishing Star" quest for the Wishing Star comes after the Wishing Weald quest. You need a Wishing Star for both the Dynamax Band and the Power Spot, so get one early.[3]

Once you have one, craft the Dynamax Band and wear it so you can Dynamax your Pokemon. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's version.[3][5]

Dynamaxing also needs a Power Spot at most 20 blocks away from the battle, so stay close to everything involved. Making one takes a Wishing Star and a Max Mushroom, which grows in Lush Caves. The pack changed this recipe as well.[3][5]

Tip: Max Mushrooms also make Pokemon food: Dynamax Candy raises a Pokemon's Dynamax Level, Max Honey activates a Max Move, and Max Soup Gigantamaxes a Pokemon.[3]

Start on Mega Evolution

Mine the Mega Crystal with a Diamond Pickaxe or better to get a Mega Stone. On its own it does nothing. You use it to craft the specific stone for one Pokemon, so every Mega Pokemon needs its own stone, and for multiple Mega Pokemon you will need multiple Mega Sites. The quest is "Mega Stone" quest, and it comes after the Mega Site quest.[3]

You will also want a Keystone. It is found in the center of a Megaroid, and you need a Diamond Pickaxe or better to mine it. Each Megaroid gives just one, and the quest says you don't need any more than that. See a quest in "Mega Showdown".[3]

Combine it all into the Omni Ring

Tired of using 4 slots for Z-Moves, Dynamaxing, Mega Evolution and Terastallization? The Omni Ring does all four from one accessory slot. Its quest "Omni Ring" quest comes after the Tera Orb, Keystone, Wishing Star and Sparkling Stone quests. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's version.[3][5]

The Light and Dark Sparkling Stones are rare finds from brushing Suspicious Sand in Archeological Sites. The only difference between them is how the crafted rings look, not what they do.[3]

How does Cobblemon: Mega Showdown work?

6 parts

The sources describe Mega Showdown as an addon to Cobblemon that adds Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, Teralization, Dynamax/Gigantamax, Ultra Burst and Fusions. So this section is about how those gimmick items work, not about machines, power or item automation.[1]

Mega Evolution

Each Mega Stone is tied to one species. For example, Abomasite lets Abomasnow Mega Evolve, and Charizardite X and Charizardite Y both let Charizard Mega Evolve, into different forms.[5][6]

Archie's Anchor and Brendan's Mega Cuff each contain a Key Stone that allows Pokémon holding a Mega Stone to do their thing. The sources here don't show the rest of that tooltip, so I can't tell you their exact rules.[5][6]

In this pack the recipes for Abomasite, Charizardite X, Charizardite Y, Archie's Anchor and Brendan's Mega Cuff are all marked as changed from the mod's versions. Here is the pack's Abomasite recipe:[5]

Z-Moves

Z-Crystals unlock Z-Moves. A type crystal such as Buginium-Z lets a Pokémon upgrade its Bug-type moves. Signature crystals like Aloraichium-Z are species-specific: it lets Alolan Raichu upgrade Thunderbolt into Stoked Sparksurfer.[5][6]

Tera and Dynamax

Tera Shards change a Pokémon's Tera Type to the matching type. A Dynamax Band allows Pokémon to Dynamax during battle, and Dynamax Candy raises a Pokémon's Dynamax Level to make it stronger when Dynamaxed. The advancement list mentions Dynamax Level 10 as a goal.[6]

Held items

Some items have their effect when held. Booster Energy boosts the strongest stat of a Pokémon with Protosynthesis or Quark Drive. Adrenaline Orb boosts Speed when the holder is intimidated. Burn Drive and Chill Drive change Genesect's Techno Blast to Fire-type and Ice-type respectively.[5][6]

The pack changes the recipes for Booster Energy, Burn Drive and Chill Drive from the mod's versions.[5]

Wearing gimmick items

All gimmick items can be worn in their own Gimmick slots through accessories integration, so you don't have to pick between the accessories mods you have installed.[1]

Finding stones in the world

The advancements point to world exploration too: finding a Raw Mega Stone, and locating a Megaroid or Mega Site and an Observatory or Archaeological Site. A lost map is also described as leading you to the lost stone. The sources don't say how these structures generate or how you get the map.[6]

The mod is also built to be datapacked, so the details of Megas, items and battle scripts can be changed by packs and addons.[1]

How do you progress through Cobblemon: Mega Showdown?

6 parts

Progression in this pack follows the Mega Showdown quest chapter. It covers four battle mechanics: Terastallization, Dynamax, Mega Evolution and Z-Moves. They all come together in the Omni Ring, so you can follow whichever line you like first.[3]

Terastallization

The "Tera Orb" quest quest is your starting point. You need to wear a Tera Orb before you can Terastallize. Right-click it to equip it, or use the Accessory Screen. The quest says it is made with only vanilla items, and the pack has changed its recipe.[3][5]

Terastallizing takes a lot of Tera Shards. The pouch quest (a quest in "Mega Showdown") points you to the Tera Pouch, which holds a stack of each type of Tera Shard. The other pouches are dyed versions with their own recipes.[3][5]

"Stellar Tera Shards" quest covers the Stellar Tera Shard. It has a 1% chance to drop whenever any Pokemon is defeated. Using 50 of them on a Pokemon makes it Terastallize into the Stellar type, and the quest says this is the only way to get that type. Stellar gives a boost to all attacks but is weak to other Stellar types.[3]

The pack also changes a Productive Bees recipe for the Terabeegos bee. It lists every Tera Shard type, Stellar included, as an output from an advanced beehive.[5]

Advanced Beehive (productivebees)

    Dynamax

The "Wishing Star" quest quest comes after Wishing Weald. A Wishing Star is what lets you Dynamax. In battle, Dynamaxing gives your Pokemon Max versions of its moves, makes it much bigger, and gives it more health.[3]

Next, "Dynamax Band" quest has you wear a Dynamax Band. The pack has changed this recipe.[3][5]

The Max Mushroom ("Max Mushroom" quest) grows in Lush Caves. You need it for the Power Spot. You can also turn it into Pokemon food: Dynamax Candy raises a Pokemon's Dynamax Level, Max Honey activates a Max Move, and Max Soup Gigantamaxes a Pokemon.[3][5]

Dynamaxing needs a Power Spot at most 20 blocks away from the battle ("Power Spot" quest). The quest isn't sure whether that distance is measured from you, your Pokemon or the thing you're fighting, so it suggests staying close to be sure. It takes a Wishing Star and a Max Mushroom, and the pack has changed the recipe.[3][5]

    Mega Evolution

The "Mega Stone" quest quest comes after Mega Site. Mine the Mega Crystal with a Diamond Pickaxe or better to get a Mega Stone. On its own it does nothing. You craft it into the specific Mega Stone for one Pokemon, and only a select few Pokemon can Mega Evolve. If you want several Mega Pokemon you'll need several Mega Sites.[3]

The pack has changed the recipes for the specific stones, such as Gardevoirite.[5]

The Keystone (a quest in "Mega Showdown") is found in the center of the Megaroid, and its quest comes after the Megaroid. Mine it with a Diamond Pickaxe or better. Each one gives just a single Keystone, and the quest says you don't need more than that.[3]

    Z-Moves

The Blank-Z quest (a quest in "Mega Showdown") comes after Observatory. It is blank by design. To make a specific Z-Move, you craft it with other items. For example, Firium-Z is built on the Blank-Z.[3][5]

    The Omni Ring

"Omni Ring" quest is the payoff. Normally you'd take up 4 slots for Z-Moves, Dynamaxing, Mega Evolutions and Terastallizing. Wear the Omni Ring in any of those 4 slots and it gives you the function of the Z-Ring, Dynamax Band, Mega Bracelet and Tera Orb. The quest comes after the Tera Orb, Keystone, Wishing Star and Sparkling Stone quests, and the pack has changed the recipe.[3][5]

    • The quest says keeping Time Crystals coming is explained further in the Just Dire Things questline.[4]

How does Cobblemon: Mega Showdown work with other mods?

    3 parts

Mega Showdown is built around Cobblemon, so most of its crafting in this pack runs through Cobblemon items. A few of its items also show up in recipes from other mods. On the equipment side, all the gimmick items can be worn in their own gimmick slots, so you don't have to pick between the accessory mods you have installed.[1][5]

Cobblemon held items, gems and apricorns

Most of the specific Mega Stones are crafted from the base Mega Stone plus a Cobblemon held item. The pack changed these recipes. The example below is Abomasite.[5]

Zygarde Cube and the ATM tier items

The Zygarde Cube is the main link to the bigger tech and magic mods. The pack's quest tells you to make it in an Oritech Assembler, using Spirited Crystals from Powah and Time Crystals from Just Dire Things. The quest's own Zygarde Cube entry has the full walkthrough.[4]

The pack also uses the cube as an ingredient in two of its own custom recipes. One makes the Improbable Probability Device and mixes it with items from AE2, Iron Furnaces, MegaCells, Mekanism and PneumaticCraft.[5]

The other makes the Oblivion Shard and mixes it with items from Cataclysm and Forbidden Arcanus.[5]

    Tera Shards in pack recipes

Tera Shards also feed into recipes from other mods. The pack added a Summoning Rituals altar recipe that uses every Tera Shard type, including Stellar Tera Shard, together with a Productive Bees configurable bee.[5]

The pack changed the Extended AE Crystal Assembler recipe for the Terapagos Crystal. It uses the Normal and Stellar Tera Shards.[5]

Which All the Mons quests use Cobblemon: Mega Showdown?

    6 parts

Quests for this mod live in two chapters. Most of them are in the Mega Showdown chapter, which walks you through Terastallizing, Dynamaxing, Mega Evolution and Z-Moves. One more quest sits in The ATM Star chapter.[3][4]

    Mega Showdown chapter

The chapter starts from an opening quest called Mega Showdown!. Two quests unlock straight from it: "Tera Orb" quest and "Max Mushroom" quest. The Tera Orb quest asks you to craft a Tera Orb, which you need for permission to Terastallize. You can equip it with a right click or through the Accessory Screen. The Max Mushroom quest asks for a Max Mushroom, which grows in Lush Caves.[3]

    Tera branch

After a Tera Shards quest, there are two follow-ups. "Stellar Tera Shards" quest asks for a Stellar Tera Shard. These have a 1% chance to drop when any Pokemon is defeated, and using 50 of them on a Pokemon Terastallizes it into the Stellar type. The other follow-up is a quest in "Mega Showdown". It asks for a Tera Pouch in any colour, such as Tera Pouch, and the pouch holds a stack of each type of Tera Shard.[3]

    Dynamax branch

    1. After a Wishing Weald quest, "Wishing Star" quest asks for a Wishing Star, which lets you Dynamax your Pokemon.[3]
    2. "Dynamax Band" quest comes next and asks for a Dynamax Band, which you wear so you can Dynamax.[3]
    3. "Power Spot" quest needs both the Wishing Star and the Max Mushroom quests done first. It asks for a Power Spot, and Dynamaxing needs one at most 20 blocks away from the battle.[3]

Mega, Z-Move and sparkling stone quests

    The Omni Ring

"Omni Ring" quest is the capstone and asks for an Omni Ring. It requires four earlier quests: "Tera Orb" quest, a quest in "Mega Showdown", "Wishing Star" quest and a quest in "Mega Showdown". Worn in any of the four slots, it gives you the function of the Z-Ring, Dynamax Band, Mega Bracelet and Tera Orb in one item.[3]

    The ATM Star chapter

"Zygarde Cube" quest asks for a Zygarde Cube and unlocks after the Mega Showdown quest. The quest says the pack wants you to make it with an Assembler from Oritech. It uses Spirited Crystals from Powah and Time Crystals from Just Dire Things, so this one spans several mods. The quest text also says the Just Dire Things questline explains how to keep Time Crystals coming.[4]

Unverified The sources don't give an in-pack recipe id for the Zygarde Cube, so no recipe is shown here. The quests named Mega Showdown!, Tera Shards, Mega Site, Megaroid, Wishing Weald, Archeological Site and Observatory are only known as prerequisites, and their contents aren't covered in the sources.

What changed in Cobblemon: Mega Showdown between versions?

    2 parts

All the Mons 1.0.0-rc.7 ships Cobblemon: Mega Showdown 1.8.4+1.7.3+1.21.1, and it has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier. Below are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod.[2]

Version 1.8.4 (the version in your pack)

    • Showdown files now only update once when the game starts, instead of every time you open the game. Because of that, the config to disable Showdown loading has been disabled. The mod now just checks whether Showdown is up to date instead of overwriting it each time.[7]
    • Max mushrooms, arch sites and wishing weald are now less rare.[7]
    • Battle UI issues were fixed.[7]

    Earlier releases

    • 1.8.3 hotfix: fixed tera shards and fixed NPEs.[8]
    • 1.7.4: fixed spawn presets and fixed the Burmy form change logic to match canon. Debug mode now shows Showdown logs. It also added a Gmax Pikachu remodel, Gmax Drednaw, Garbodor, Duraludon and Orbeetle, plus Orbeetle (from pigeon's pack) and the Duraludon line (missing mons).[9]
    • 1.7.1 hotfix: fixed a Ho-Oh poser crash.[10]
    • 1.6.12: added a rotation field to the sizer.[11]
    • 1.6.8: added new languages and made battle effects datapackable.[12]
    • 1.6.4: mixins were readded in a cleaner way.[13]
    • 1.6.3: added a debug mode config to see the form change id for a battle form, and removed unused mixins.[14]
    • 1.6.1: fixed Showdown loading for new players.[15]
    • 1.5.1: fixed the MSD sizer causing crashes.[16]
Tip: If you have a modified setup that relied on the config to disable Showdown loading, note that as of 1.8.4 it no longer has any effect, since Showdown files only update at game start.[7]
