What is Sophisticated Storage?
2 parts
Sophisticated Storage is in the pack as version 1.4.86.2131 (the 1.20.1 jar). It was first included in pack version 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[1]
Going by the pack's quest book, the mod gives you tiered barrels and a big family of upgrade items that all start from the Upgrade Base. The pack's sources don't include a description of the mod itself, so the rest of this guide leans on the items and recipes you can see in the pack.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
Sophisticated Storage lives in the chapter "Sophisticated and Dank", in the group "Storage and Power". It is chapter 17 of 44 in the book and holds 104 quests. You share it with Sophisticated Backpacks and Dank Storage, so you will see backpack and Dank quests mixed in with the barrel and upgrade ones.[2]
The chapter opens with an untitled checkmark quest, a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank". Two Sophisticated Storage quests come straight after it: a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" for the Barrel, and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" for the Upgrade Base.[2]
How the storage quests chain together
- Barrels run in a line: Barrel, then Copper Barrel, Iron Barrel, Gold Barrel, Diamond Barrel and finally Netherite Barrel.[2]
- Most upgrades, such as the Pickup Upgrade, Magnet Upgrade and Void Upgrade, unlock right after the Upgrade Base quest. Their Advanced versions, like the Advanced Magnet Upgrade, come after the basic one.[2]
- Stack upgrades go Stack Upgrade Tier 1, Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus, then Tier 2 up through Tier 5, ending at the Stack Upgrade Omega Tier.[2]
- Stack downgrades have their own short line: Stack Downgrade Tier 1, then Tier 2, then Tier 3.[2]
- The Experience Pump Upgrade comes after the Advanced Pump Upgrade quest.[2]
The book doesn't show 11 of the chapter's 104 quests here, so check the in-game quest book for their text.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
The pack's quest book covers this mod in the chapter "Sophisticated and Dank", in the "Storage and Power" group (chapter 17 of 44). It opens with an untitled checkmark quest, and the Barrel, Upgrade Base, Backpack and Dank 1 quests all come right after it. Here is the order I'd follow.[2]
First, make a Barrel
Start with a Barrel. It is the first storage quest (a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank"), and the whole line of metal barrel quests grows out of it. Here is the generic recipe.[2]
Generic Wood Storage (sophisticatedstorage)

This is the generic barrel recipe. There are also wood-specific ones, and one that turns a vanilla barrel into this barrel.
Next, craft an Upgrade Base
Then comes the Upgrade Base (a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank"). Almost every upgrade quest in the chapter is placed after it, including Filter Upgrade, Pump Upgrade and Stack Upgrade Tier 1. The chapter also has a separate Upgrade Base quest for the backpack version, so don't mix the two up.[2]

Then climb the barrel tiers
The quest book chains the barrels in this order: Copper Barrel (a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank"), then iron, gold, diamond and finally Netherite Barrel. The copper step is a tier upgrade recipe that starts from the barrel you already made.[2][3]

Start the stack upgrade line
The stack upgrades run in one long chain: Tier 1, Tier 1 Plus, Tier 2, and so on up to Tier 5, with Stack Upgrade Omega Tier at the end. Tier 1 hangs directly off the Upgrade Base, so it is an easy early goal. Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus is the next step.[2]

Where this pack changes things
Some recipes are added by the pack itself rather than the mod: the Pump Upgrade, Advanced Pump Upgrade, Experience Pump Upgrade, the Omega stack upgrade and the Netherite Chest. In the quest book the Advanced Pump Upgrade comes after the Pump Upgrade, and the Experience Pump Upgrade comes after the Advanced Pump Upgrade.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?
7 parts
Sophisticated Storage is more than chests and barrels. The mod has a multiblock system, per-side automation, upgrade slots and a few special rules for breaking storage. Here is what the sources show for this pack.[5]
Storage multiblocks
The Storage Controller is the centre of the system. Its tooltip says it allows you to deposit and pipe items to and from a connected multiblock of storages. A handful of helper blocks build the multiblock around it:[5]
- Storage Connector: bridges gaps between storage blocks in a storage multiblock.[5]
- Storage Input: when placed in a storage multiblock, it lets you pipe items into it. Its tooltip says it is optimized for low tps impact.[5]
- Storage Output: when placed in a storage multiblock, it lets you pipe items out of it.[5]
- Storage I/O: when placed in a storage multiblock, it lets you pipe items both to and from it.[5]
- Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock of storages to the controller. You use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.[5]
So if you want to pipe in and out through one block, use Storage I/O. If you only need one direction, Storage Input or Storage Output does that job.[5]
Automation and upgrades
Upgrades go into the upgrade slots of a storage block. Hopper and Advanced Hopper upgrades have their own settings screens, and the mod's screen text offers the I/O modes Disabled, Off, Pull, Push and Push & Pull. The screens can name the sides of the block: front, back, left, right, top and bottom.[5]
The Alchemy Upgrade is one example of what an upgrade can do. The Advanced Alchemy Upgrade tooltip says it automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets, and adds extra effect filtering options. You make it from the basic Alchemy Upgrade, as shown below.[3][5]

If you already have the Advanced Alchemy Upgrade from Sophisticated Backpacks, there is also a recipe that turns it into the storage version.[3]

The Compacting and Compression upgrades have rules about duplicates. The game refuses a second Compacting Upgrade in another upgrade slot, and the same goes for a second Compression Upgrade. A compression upgrade also needs the highlighted slots to match its chain, with items from the same chain and in order. The Advanced Compacting Upgrade's tooltip says it handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes, with more filtering options.[5]
Pump upgrades in this pack
The pack adds its own crafting recipes for the Pump Upgrade and the Advanced Pump Upgrade. The Advanced Pump Upgrade is built from the plain Pump Upgrade. The pack's script also defines an XP pump upgrade recipe that builds on the Advanced Pump Upgrade.[3][6]

Tiers and upgrading storage
Storage comes in material tiers: copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite, plus the base wooden version. The pack redefines how the chest tiers are crafted. The Iron Chest has a pack recipe, and the gold, diamond and netherite chests are each made from the chest of the tier before. The netherite step is a shapeless recipe.[3][5][6]

Tier upgrade items let you upgrade a block in place. The mod's own recipes chain them: the Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade is made from the Basic to Gold upgrade, and the Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade is made from the diamond one.[3]

If you try to upgrade with too few tier upgrade items, the game tells you how many it needs. Barrels and chests can also be upgraded directly by crafting, as the copper recipes show. A Copper Barrel is made from a barrel, and a Copper Chest from a chest, using the dedicated double chest upgrade recipe.[3][5]

Limited barrels come in versions I to IV for each material. Their tooltips show a slot count and a base stack size multiplier. You can upgrade a limited barrel too: the Limited Netherite Barrel 1 comes from the Limited Diamond Barrel 1.[3][5]

The pack also adds an omega tier stack upgrade recipe for Sophisticated Storage, which sits above the tier 5 stack upgrade.[6]
Shulker boxes
You can turn a vanilla shulker box into a Shulker Box, or a chest into its shulker version. The copper example is below.[3]

Breaking and packing storage
In this pack common.dropPacked is set to false. That option decides whether chests and barrels always drop packed with their contents without packing tape. With it false, you should not count on a broken chest or barrel keeping its contents packed unless you use packing tape.[4]
Two more break rules appear in the mod's screen text. The game can refuse to break storage that would drop too many item entities, and sneaking while breaking skips that check. A storage with the Infinity Upgrade can only be broken by admins.[5]
Looks and decoration
The Decoration Table lets you change a barrel's materials and colors. The screens split a barrel into parts such as main and accent, for top, side and bottom, and offer main and accent tints.[5]
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage progression lives in the quest chapter "Sophisticated and Dank", chapter 17 of 44 in the book, in the group "Storage and Power". It has 104 quests and shares space with Sophisticated Backpacks and Dank Storage. The chapter opens with an untitled checkmark quest. Your Barrel and Upgrade Base quests both unlock from it, alongside the backpack and Dank 1 quests.[2]
Barrel tiers
The quest book walks you up the barrel tiers in a single line, one quest per tier:[2]
- Start with the plain barrel quest a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank".[2]
- Then the copper tier a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", asking for Copper Barrel.[2]
- Next iron a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" and gold a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", asking for Iron Barrel and Gold Barrel.[2]
- Then diamond a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", asking for Diamond Barrel.[2]
- Finish with netherite a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", asking for Netherite Barrel.[2]
Each step up is a tier-upgrade recipe that takes the previous barrel, so you keep upgrading the same barrel rather than starting over. Here are the copper, diamond and netherite steps as the pack has them:[3]

If you want to skip steps, the mod also has tier upgrade items such as Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade, Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade and Diamond to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[3]
Chest tiers
The pack adds its own script recipes for the iron, gold, diamond and netherite chests, each one built from the chest below it. The netherite step is a pack recipe:[6]
Crafting Shapeless
Recipe id: minecraft:kjs/sophisticatedstorage_netherite_chest
The mod's own double-chest recipes for Copper Chest, Diamond Chest and Netherite Chest are also in the recipe list.[3]
Upgrades
Almost every upgrade quest hangs off the Upgrade Base quest, and the base item itself has its own recipe:[2][3]
Crafting Shaped
| any plank | any iron ingot | any plank |
| any iron ingot | any plank | any iron ingot |
| any plank | any iron ingot | any plank |

From there the quests pair each basic upgrade with an advanced follow-up. Examples are Alchemy Upgrade into Advanced Alchemy Upgrade, and Hopper Upgrade into Advanced Hopper Upgrade. Smelting, blasting and smoking each lead on to an auto version, such as Auto-blasting Upgrade.[2]
Pump line
The pump upgrades are a pack change, since all three recipes are added by the pack's script. In the quest book, the Experience Pump quest comes after the Advanced Pump quest.[2][3][6]

Stack upgrades
Stack upgrades have their own chain in the quest book, starting from the Upgrade Base quest: Stack Upgrade Tier 1, then Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus, then tiers 2, 3, 4 and 5, and finally Stack Upgrade Omega Tier. The stack downgrades (tier 1, 2 and 3) run as a separate chain from the same base.[2]

The Omega tier is where the pack steps in. Its recipe is added by the pack and needs a kubejs Infinity 2 item plus 8 Stack Upgrade Tier 5. That makes it a real endgame goal rather than a simple craft.[3][6]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
4 parts
Sophisticated Storage links up with a few other mods in this pack through its recipes: Sophisticated Backpacks, Chipped, ProjectE's Energy Condenser MK2 and a pack-made Omega upgrade. Here is each connection in turn.[3][6][7]
Sophisticated Backpacks
You can convert upgrades between the two mods, in both directions. The pack has 39 recipes that turn a storage upgrade into the matching backpack upgrade, and 39 more that turn a backpack upgrade back into the storage one. For example, Feeding upgrade and Feeding Upgrade can be swapped for each other. The Chipped upgrades are covered too.[3]

The quest book puts both mods in the same chapter, "Sophisticated and Dank", in the group "Storage and Power" (chapter 17 of 44). After the opening quest a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" there is a a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" quest and a separate Upgrade Base quest for each mod: a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" for storage and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" for backpacks. A a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" quest also unlocks from that opening quest.[2]
The chapter has 104 quests and 42 of them are not covered here. Check the quest book for those.[2]
Chipped
Sophisticated Storage has seven Chipped upgrades, one for each Chipped workbench. Each is crafted in the pack with its matching workbench:[3]
- Alchemy Bench gives Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade[3]
- Botanist Workbench gives Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade[3]
- Carpenters Table gives Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade[3]
- Glassblower gives Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade[3]
- Loom Table gives Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade[3]
- Mason Table gives Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade[3]
- Tinkering Table gives Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade[3]

Energy Condenser MK2
The Diamond Chest is an ingredient in the endgame Energy Condenser MK2. The pack changed this recipe with its own script, and it is crafted on an Extended Crafting shaped table. It also pulls in items from ProjectE, ProjectExpansion, Extra Storage, Compressium, AE2 Omni Cells, Cyclic, Draconic Evolution, Ender IO and Mutant Monsters, plus the earlier Energy Condenser. The script asks for the oak version of the Diamond Chest.[3][7]

Omega Tier stack upgrade
The pack adds its own recipe for Stack Upgrade Omega Tier, which combines Infinity 2 with 8× Stack Upgrade Tier 5. In the quest book, the Omega Tier quest comes right after the Tier 5 quest.[2][3][6]

The pack's script also adds a matching Omega Tier recipe for Sophisticated Backpacks, built from Stack Upgrade Tier 4 and the same Infinity 2.[6]
Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
The Sophisticated Storage quests sit in one chapter of the quest book: "Sophisticated and Dank", in the group "Storage and Power". The chapter is shared with Sophisticated Backpacks and Dank Storage quests, so you will see a lot of repeated names. Here I only cover the ones that ask for Sophisticated Storage items. Each of them has a single item task: you get the item.[2]
Where the chapter starts
The chapter opens with an untitled checkmark quest, a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank". Two Sophisticated Storage quests come straight after it: a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Upgrade Base, and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Barrel. Most of the storage upgrade quests are listed after an Upgrade Base quest.[2]
Barrel line
The barrel quests form one straight line, in this order:[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Barrel.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Copper Barrel.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Iron Barrel.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Gold Barrel.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Diamond Barrel.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for the Netherite Barrel.[2]
Stack upgrades and downgrades
The stack upgrades are another single line, starting from the Upgrade Base quest:[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 1.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 2.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 3.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 4.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Upgrade Tier 5.[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Upgrade Omega Tier, the last quest in that line.[2]
The downgrades have their own short line: a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks for Stack Downgrade Tier 1, then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" for Stack Downgrade Tier 2, then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" for Stack Downgrade Tier 3.[2]
Functional upgrades
Most of the other upgrades each get a quest after the Upgrade Base quest, and many have a follow-up quest for their advanced or automatic version:[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Void Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Void Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Pump Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Pump Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Experience Pump Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Smelting Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Auto-smelting Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Blasting Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Auto-blasting Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Smoking Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Auto-smoking Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Alchemy Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Alchemy Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Compacting Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Compacting Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Jukebox Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Jukebox Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Pickup Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Pickup Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Filter Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Filter Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Hopper Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Hopper Upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Feeding upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Feeding upgrade).[2]
- a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Magnet Upgrade), then a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Advanced Magnet Upgrade).[2]
- Three upgrades have no follow-up quest: a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Compression Upgrade), a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Stonecutter Upgrade) and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" (Crafting Upgrade).[2]
Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?
2 parts
The config files for Sophisticated Storage in this pack cover two things: how storage drops when you break it, and what shows up in JEI and the creative tab.[4][8]
Breaking storage: dropPacked
common.dropPacked is set to false in this pack. This option decides whether chests and barrels are always dropped as packed, with their contents, when you break them without needing packing tape. With it off, you shouldn't expect that automatic behavior, so use packing tape when you want to move a loaded chest or barrel.[4]
What shows up in JEI and the creative tab
These options live in the client config and only affect how items are listed. They don't change the storage itself. This is how the pack sets them:[8]
- client.showHigherTierGenericWoodVariants is false, so JEI and the creative tab don't list generic wood variants for copper and higher tiers. The option's description says this helps keep the lists smaller when many compatible wood types are loaded.[8]
- client.showHigherTierTintedVariants is true, so tinted storage items for iron and higher tiers are listed.[8]
- client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly is false, so JEI and the creative tab show every wood variant of each storage item tier rather than just one.[8]
If the lists feel too long for you, these are the options to look at. Turning on the single wood variant option makes both lists smaller, and turning off the tinted variants option removes the tinted items for iron and higher tiers from them.[8]
