What is Sophisticated Backpacks?

1 part

This pack includes Sophisticated Backpacks version 3.26.3.2157, a 1.20.1 build. The pack's quest book shows a line of backpack tiers and a large set of upgrade items that all start from an Upgrade Base.[1][2]

The tiers run from the plain Backpack through Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack and Diamond Backpack up to the Netherite Backpack. Upgrades such as the Magnet Upgrade, Feeding Upgrade and Crafting Upgrade have quests that come after the Upgrade Base quest.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod is covered in the chapter "Sophisticated and Dank", in the group "Storage and Power". It is chapter 17 of 44 in the book and has 104 quests. The chapter is shared with Sophisticated Storage and Dank Storage, so you will see barrels and Dank items mixed in with the backpack quests.[2]

11 of the chapter's quests are not covered here, so check the quest book itself for those.[2]

Unverified Whether this mod is used on the ATM Star path is not shown by the sources here. Check the quest book chapters for that path in game.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Backpacks?

4 parts

Backpacks are tracked in the quest book chapter "Sophisticated and Dank" (group "Storage and Power", chapter 17 of 44). It opens with a checkmark quest, and right after it come the a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" quest and the a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" quest. Those two items are the natural place to start.[2]

First: the Backpack

Craft the Backpack first. The tier quests in the chapter build on it: Copper Backpack comes after it, then Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite.[2][3]

Second: the Upgrade Base

Next make the Upgrade Base. Most of the backpack upgrade quests in the chapter come after the Upgrade Base quest, and many upgrade recipes in the pack, like the Filter Upgrade and the Refill Upgrade, use it as an ingredient. Make a few.[2][3]

Third: the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier

The Stack Upgrade Starter Tier is the first stack upgrade. In the quest book, a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" comes after the Upgrade Base quest, and Stack Upgrade Tier 1, 2, 3 and 4 all come after it.[2]

Fourth: upgrade the backpack itself

The Copper Backpack is made from the plain Backpack. Gold is made from the Iron Backpack and Diamond from the Gold Backpack.[3]

Each tier gives you more room. These are the values the pack sets in server.copperBackpack.inventorySlotCount and the matching options for the other tiers:[4]

Since the Copper Backpack has only 1 upgrade slot, choose your first upgrade carefully. The Netherite step has been changed by the pack from the mod's own recipe, so check this one before you plan for it:[3][4]

Tip: A backpack accepts at most 3 stack upgrades, 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade, set by server.maxUpgradesPerStorage. Plan your slots around that.[4]
Tip: In this pack server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false, so carrying several backpacks does not slow you down.[4]

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work?

11 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks has no machines, multiblocks or power networks of its own. What it does have is a backpack with a fixed number of storage slots and upgrade slots, plus upgrades that handle items, fluids, energy and even mobs for you. This section covers how those pieces behave in this pack, using the pack's own config values.[4]

Backpack tiers

Each tier has its own storage size and number of upgrade slots, and the pack sets them in the server config. Higher tiers give you more room for upgrades, which is where most of the mod's power comes from.[4]

The base Backpack is crafted like this:[3]

Upgrade slots and limits

Every upgrade starts from an Upgrade Base:[3]

Upgrade BaseMod recipe

Crafting Shaped
any stringany iron ingotany string
any iron ingotany leatherany iron ingot
any stringany iron ingotany string

Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:upgrade_base

You can't stack up unlimited copies of the same upgrade. The pack limits each backpack to 1 furnace-type upgrade, 3 stack upgrades and 1 jukebox upgrade (server.maxUpgradesPerStorage). Some upgrades also refuse to be placed twice: the game warns you if there is already an Everlasting, Inception or Tool Swapper upgrade in another slot, and only one Mob Catcher Upgrade is allowed per backpack.[4][5]

Each upgrade has an ON/OFF switch in its slot, and the game tells you when an upgrade is switched on or off. Active upgrades such as magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding work from any backpack in your inventory in this pack, because server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false.[4][5]

Stack upgrades

Stack upgrades are the way to push a backpack past its normal capacity. The pack adds its own top step, the Stack Upgrade Omega Tier, made from eight Stack Upgrade Tier 4 around an Infinity 2 ingredient.[3][6]

Remember the limit of 3 stack upgrades per backpack (server.maxUpgradesPerStorage). Bundles and every colour of shulker box are listed as non-stackable, so they stay single items even with a stack upgrade (server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems).[4]

Filters

Most item-handling upgrades have a filter, and the screen lets you choose between Allow and Block. The Filter Upgrade has 9 filter slots (server.filterUpgrade.filterSlots) shown 3 per row (server.filterUpgrade.slotsInRow), while the advanced version has 16 slots (server.advancedFilterUpgrade.filterSlots) shown 4 per row (server.advancedFilterUpgrade.slotsInRow).[4][5]

The same pattern repeats across the mod. Basic pickup, deposit, feeding, restock, magnet and void upgrades have 9 filter slots, and their advanced versions have 16. Refill is the odd one out with 6 basic slots and 12 advanced.[4]

Item movement upgrades

If you use other mods' blocks that shouldn't be touched, the pack leaves the block lists for connections and interaction empty (server.noConnectionBlocks, server.noInteractionBlocks).[4]

Cooking upgrades

The smelting, smoking and blasting upgrades, and their auto versions, all have a speed multiplier and a fuel efficiency multiplier. In this pack every one is set to 1, which matches a vanilla furnace. The allowed range is 0.25 to 4.0. The auto versions add filters: 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots.[4]

You can get an Auto-smoking Upgrade from an Auto-smelting Upgrade:[3]

Fluids, energy and experience

The tank upgrade scales with the size of the backpack. It gives 4,000 mB of capacity per row of storage slots and, for the battery side, 10,000 FE per row. Maximum transfer is a base of 20 per operation, multiplied by the number of rows and the stack multiplier (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow, server.tankUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow, server.tankUpgrade.maxInputOutput). Fluid containers in the tank slots are filled or drained one bucket at a time, with a cooldown of 20 (server.tankUpgrade.autoFillDrainContainerCooldown).[4]

The pump upgrade has 4 fluid filter slots (server.pumpUpgrade.filterSlots) and the same base rate of 20 mB per operation, also multiplied by rows and the stack multiplier (server.pumpUpgrade.maxInputOutput).[4]

The XP pump can mend items with Mending, using at most 5 experience points per operation (server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending).[4]

The backpack item itself can act as a fluid container for other mods' tanks. The pack leaves this on (server.itemFluidHandlerEnabled), although the config notes that it can cause dupe bugs when a backpack is filled or drained in item form.[4]

Mob Catcher

The Mob Catcher Upgrade stores a mob inside the backpack, and the mob takes up a free area of slots. You can click to release it later, and you must release captured mobs before removing the upgrade. Bosses, players, mobs with inventories and mobs with passengers or vehicles can't be captured. Only the owner can capture a given mob, and hostile mobs need the Advanced upgrade. If a mob is too big, the game tells you how many slots it needs compared with what the upgrade allows.[5]

Inception and backpacks inside backpacks

The Inception upgrade can only go into a top-level backpack, and you can't remove it while there are backpacks inside. In this pack, upgrades inside the contained backpacks keep working, and upgrades can use the inventories of backpacks stored inside (server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesInContainedBackpacksAreFunctional, server.inceptionUpgrade.upgradesUseInventoriesOfBackpacksInBackpack). A button lets you choose whether the main backpack or the inner ones are used first.[4][5]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Backpacks?

4 parts

Backpack progression in the pack is told in the quest chapter "Sophisticated and Dank", in the group "Storage and Power" (chapter 17 of 44 in the book). It has 104 quests and also covers Sophisticated Storage and Dank storage, so the backpack quests sit alongside those.[2]

Backpack tiers

The backpack line is a straight chain. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" comes after an untitled checkmark quest. Then each tier follows the one before: a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" and finally a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank". The items are the Backpack, Copper Backpack, Iron Backpack, Gold Backpack, Diamond Backpack and Netherite Backpack.[2][3]

Upgrades

Most upgrade quests hang off the a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" quest, which is also placed after the untitled checkmark quest. The Upgrade Base is the ingredient the basic upgrades are built on.[2][3]

For example, a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" follows a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" follows a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank". The advanced recipes are next-tier recipes that build on the basic upgrade.[2][3]

The pump line goes one step further. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" comes after a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", which comes after a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank". The furnace-style upgrades work the same way: a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" follows a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" follows a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank".[2]

Tip: If you already own the Sophisticated Storage versions of the advanced compacting, feeding, filter, magnet or pickup upgrades, there are recipes that turn them into the backpack versions.[3]

Stack upgrades

Stack upgrades have their own quest line. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" comes after the Upgrade Base quest. The quest book then lists a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" each directly after the Starter Tier quest.[2]

Omega Tier

The Stack Upgrade Omega Tier recipe is added by the pack, so you won't find it in the mod's defaults. It is built from Stack Upgrade Tier 4 upgrades plus a pack item, as the recipe below shows. The Omega quest in this chapter asks for the Sophisticated Storage version, not the backpack one.[2][3][6]

This recipe is added by the pack.

How does Sophisticated Backpacks work with other mods?

5 parts

Sophisticated Backpacks connects to a few other mods in this pack. The links below come from in-pack recipes and from the quest book.[2][3]

Sophisticated Storage: swapping upgrades both ways

The pack has conversion recipes between Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades and their Sophisticated Storage versions, so an upgrade you already made isn't wasted. There are 39 recipes going from a storage upgrade to a backpack upgrade, and 39 going back the other way. They cover upgrades such as the Crafting Upgrade, the Compacting Upgrade and the Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[3]

Here is the Crafting Upgrade as an example, first from the storage version to the backpack version, then back again.[3]

Chipped: workstation upgrades

Chipped gets its own set of backpack upgrades. Each one is crafted around the matching Chipped workstation: Alchemy Bench, Botanist Workbench, Carpenters Table, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table. That gives you seven upgrades, from Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade to Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. These upgrades also have backpack and storage conversion recipes like the ones above.[3]

The Transmutation Tablet

This is the odd one out. The pack changed the recipe for the Transmutation Tablet from ProjectE. It is now crafted in the Extended Crafting shaped table, and it needs a Crafting Upgrade from this mod. The rest of the recipe pulls from ProjectE, Project Expansion, Blood Magic, Botania, PneumaticCraft, Compressium and others, so it is a real endgame craft.[3][8]

Stack Upgrade Omega Tier

The pack adds its own recipe for the Stack Upgrade Omega Tier with a KubeJS script. It combines Infinity 2, an item from the pack itself, with 8 of the Stack Upgrade Tier 4.[3]

In the quest book

The quest book groups this mod with others in the chapter "Sophisticated and Dank". It sits in the group "Storage and Power" and is chapter 17 of 44. Its first quest is an untitled checkmark. After it come the a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" quest, a Sophisticated Storage Barrel quest (a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank"), the a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" quest for Dank Storage, and an Upgrade Base quest for each of Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage.[2]

Dank Storage continues with a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", which comes after Dank 1. Most backpack and storage upgrade quests in the chapter follow the Upgrade Base quests. The chapter has 104 quests and 42 of them aren't covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]

Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Sophisticated Backpacks?

5 parts

In the quest book, everything for this mod sits in the chapter "Sophisticated and Dank", in the group "Storage and Power" (chapter 17 of 44). You share that chapter with Sophisticated Storage and Dank Storage quests, so you'll see barrels, storage upgrades and Dank quests mixed in. This section only covers the Sophisticated Backpacks ones.[2]

Where it starts

The chapter opens with an untitled checkmark quest, a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank". The backpack line and the upgrade line both come after it. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Backpack, and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Upgrade Base.[2]

The backpack tiers

The backpack quests form one straight line in the book, each one unlocking after the one before:[2]

  1. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Backpack.[2]
  2. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Copper Backpack.[2]
  3. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Iron Backpack.[2]
  4. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Gold Backpack.[2]
  5. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Diamond Backpack.[2]
  6. a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Netherite Backpack.[2]

Upgrades after the Upgrade Base

Once you've done the Upgrade Base quest, the upgrade quests below all unlock directly after it, so the book doesn't set an order between them:[2]

Advanced and automatic follow-ups

Many of these quests have a follow-up that unlocks after the basic one:[2]

Stack upgrades

a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" asks you for the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier and comes after the Upgrade Base. The quests for Tier 1 to Tier 4, a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank" and a quest in "Sophisticated and Dank", all unlock directly after the Starter Tier quest rather than one after another.[2]

Which Sophisticated Backpacks config options matter?

4 parts

These are the Sophisticated Backpacks options you will most likely care about, with the exact values this pack sets.[4][7]

Backpack sizes

Each tier has its own inventory slot count and upgrade slot count in the server config. This is how the pack sets them:[4]

Upgrade limits and behaviour

server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps each backpack at 1 upgrade from the furnace_upgrades group, 3 stack upgrades and 1 jukebox upgrade.[4]

The magnet upgrade picks up items within 3 blocks, and the advanced magnet within 5 (server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange, server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange).[4]

The smelting, smoking and blasting upgrades, plus their auto versions, all use a speed multiplier and a fuel efficiency multiplier of 1, so they run at vanilla furnace rates. One example is server.smeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier.[4]

The tank upgrade gives 4000 mB per row of storage slots, and the battery side gives 10000 FE per row (server.tankUpgrade.capacityPerSlotRow, server.tankUpgrade.energyPerSlotRow).[4]

The XP pump can mend items with Mending (server.xpPumpUpgrade.mendingOn is true), using at most 5 experience points per operation (server.xpPumpUpgrade.maxXpPointsPerMending).[4]

Carrying several backpacks

server.nerfs.tooManyBackpacksSlowness is false, so carrying lots of backpacks does not slow you down. The related limit, server.nerfs.maxNumberOfBackpacks, is set to 3 and only matters if that slowness option is turned on.[4]

server.nerfs.onlyWornBackpackTriggersUpgrades is false. Active upgrades like magnet, pickup, cooking and feeding are therefore not limited to the backpack you are wearing.[4]

server.allowOpeningOtherPlayerBackpacks is true, so you can right click a backpack another player is wearing to open it.[4]

Loot and mobs wearing backpacks

Backpack loot in vanilla chests is on (common.chestLootEnabled is true).[7]

Mobs can spawn wearing a backpack with a chance of 0.01 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.chance). When one does, these weights decide which tier it gets:[4]

Mobs that wear a backpack get no extra loot inside it, because server.entityBackpackAdditions.addLoot is false. The chance of a mob dropping its backpack when you kill it is 0 (server.entityBackpackAdditions.backpackDropChance).[4]
