What is ProjectE?
2 parts
ProjectE is in this pack at version 1.1.0. In the quest book you mostly meet it through Dark Matter and Red Matter, and the tools, armor and weapons made from them.[1][2][3]
Where it shows up in the quests
Most of ProjectE's gear sits in the gearing up chapter. "ProjectE Tools" quest has one task for a Dark Matter tool, such as the Dark Matter Pickaxe or Dark Matter Hammer, and another for a Red Matter tool, such as the Red Matter Pickaxe or Red Matter Hammer.[2]
Armor has its own quest, "ProjectE Armors" quest. It asks for a piece of Dark Matter armor, for example the Dark Matter Helmet, and a piece of Red Matter armor, for example the Red Matter Helmet.[2]
"ProjectE Weapons" quest asks for the Dark Matter Sword and the Red Matter Sword. "Red Katar" quest comes after it and asks for the Red Katar. The Red Morningstar is requested by "Red Morningstar" quest, which comes after the tools quest.[2]
Beyond gear
ProjectE also appears in the resource generation chapter. "Matter Overload" quest accepts either Dark Matter or Red Matter and unlocks after another quest.[3]
In the tier 5 World Engine chapter, "Powering The Void" quest and "Auto-Build The Dark Void Upgrade" quest each have a task for an Void Container and another for a Dark Matter Block.[4]
Unverified The sources here do not show whether the ATM Star quest path uses ProjectE, so check the quest book in game to see if it is part of that route.
How do you get started with ProjectE?
6 parts
Welcome to ProjectE! In this pack the early game starts with the Philosopher's Stone, then climbs a chain of fuels and matter that ends in powerful tools. Here is the order I'd go in, and why.[5][6]
Start with the Philosopher's Stone
The mod's own advancement for the Philosopher's Stone reads "Let's get things started! Craft a philosopher's stone". In this pack it is also an ingredient in the coal and fuel conversion recipes below, so everything else builds on it.[5][6]
Turn coal and fuels into better ones
The pack adds a recipe that turns plain coal into Alchemical Coal using the stone. This is your first real use of it.[5]
This recipe is added by the pack.
The pack also adds stone recipes that give you Aeternalis Fuel and then Mobius Fuel. Alchemical Coal and Aeternalis Fuel can each be compacted into a block and broken back down again.[5]
Added by the pack.

Dark Matter
Dark Matter is the gate to the better gear, and it is made from Aeternalis Fuel, so the fuel step above matters. You can compact it into a Dark Matter Block and break it back down. The quest book asks for a Dark Matter Block in the world engine tier 5 chapter, and a quest in the resource generation chapter accepts either Dark Matter or Red Matter.[3][4][5]

Compacting Dark Matter into a block.
Dark Matter gear
In this pack, Dark Matter tools and armor are made at a smithing table by upgrading the matching netherite piece with a Dark Matter Smithing Template and Dark Matter. Here is the pickaxe as an example. The same pattern covers the axe, shovel, hoe, hammer, sword and all four armor pieces. Dark Matter Shears are the exception and use a normal crafting recipe.[5]

Red Matter
Red Matter is crafted from Aeternalis Fuel and Dark Matter, and the mod has two recipes for it. The Red Matter gear follows a similar smithing pattern, but it upgrades the matching Dark Matter piece using a Red Matter Smithing Template and Red Matter.[5]

Follow the quests
The gearing up chapter of the quest book tracks this same progression. "ProjectE Weapons" quest asks for a Dark Matter Sword and a Red Matter Sword. "ProjectE Tools" quest asks for a Dark Matter tool and a Red Matter tool, and "ProjectE Armors" quest does the same for armor. "Red Katar" quest comes after the sword quest and asks for the Red Katar. "Red Morningstar" quest comes after the tools quest and asks for the Red Morningstar.[2]
How does ProjectE work?
8 parts
The sources for this mod cover its configuration and a few recipes. They don't describe machine or multiblock behavior such as collectors, relays or condensers, so this section sticks to what the pack's configs and recipes show: how EMC values are worked out, how items behave in the pedestal and in your inventory, and what the pack changed.[5][6][7]
Where EMC values come from
ProjectE calculates EMC with a set of mappers. They convert crafting recipes, brewing, smithing and more, and the mod lets you toggle each one in its config. Extra values can be added through the custom EMC file or through datapack conversion files. If you want to see the internals, the mod has an option to dump all conversions to a file.[6]
Some items change value based on their data. Damaged items are worth less. Enchantments raise an item's value. Items holding stored EMC count that EMC, and so do Klein Stars stored in Mercurial Eyes.[6]
In this pack the custom EMC file has no entries, and its comment tells you to use the in-game commands to edit it. So any manual value overrides are made in-game rather than by hand-editing the file.[8]
Burning items and covalence loss
difficulty.covalenceLoss controls how much EMC you get back when you burn an item. Setting it to 0.5 would return half of the EMC cost. The pack leaves it at the mod default of 1, so you get the full value back. difficulty.covalenceLossRounding is true, which means a burn value under 1 EMC rounds up to 1 instead of down to 0.[7]
Pedestal and inventory effects
Several items work when placed in a Dark Matter Pedestal, and each has its own delay between actions. The pack keeps all of the pedestal delays at the mod defaults. You can also show these pedestal functions in item tooltips with tooltips.pedestal, which is on in the pack.[7][9]
- Archangel Smite fires arrows with a delay of 40 (cooldown.pedestal.archangel).[7]
- SWRG tries to smite mobs with a delay of 70 (cooldown.pedestal.swrg).[7]
- The Ignition Ring tries to light entities on fire with a delay of 40 (cooldown.pedestal.ignition).[5][7]
- The Zero Ring tries to extinguish entities and freeze the ground with a delay of 40 (cooldown.pedestal.zero).[5][7]
- The Harvest Goddess tries to grow and harvest with a delay of 10 (cooldown.pedestal.harvest).[7]
- Body Stone heals 0.5 shanks with a delay of 10 (cooldown.pedestal.body). Soul Stone heals 0.5 hearts with a delay of 10 (cooldown.pedestal.soul). Life Stone heals both food and hunger with a delay of 5 (cooldown.pedestal.life).[7]
- The Talisman of Repair has a delay of 20 (cooldown.pedestal.repair). The Evertide Amulet tries to start rain with a delay of 20 (cooldown.pedestal.evertide). The Volcanite Amulet tries to stop rain with a delay of 20 (cooldown.pedestal.volcanite).[7]
Some of these items also work from your inventory. Feed attempts (cooldown.player.feed), heal attempts (cooldown.player.heal) and Talisman of Repair attempts (cooldown.player.repair) each have a delay of 20, which matches the mod defaults.[7]
What this pack changed
A few server values differ from the mod defaults. The Gem Chestplate explosion cooldown (cooldown.player.gemChest) and the projectile cooldown (cooldown.player.projectile) are both 2 here, where the mod default is 0.[7]
The Katar's extra function (difficulty.katarDeathAura) deals 25 damage in this pack instead of the mod default of 1,000.[7]
The Watch of Flowing Time is enabled (items.enableTimeWatch). While it sits in a pedestal it gives a bonus of 8 ticks (effects.timePedBonus), lowered from the mod default of 18. Mobs are slowed by a factor of 0.1 (effects.timePedMobSlowness), which is the default.[7]
Tools, armor and other toggles
- items.pickaxeAoeVeinMining is false. Right-clicking with a Dark or Red Matter pickaxe or star vein mines the ore you target, not every ore in an area around you.[7]
- items.disableAllRadiusMining is false, so radius-based mining on right-click stays available.[7]
- items.harvBandIndirect is false. The Harvest Goddess Band does not passively grow things like tall grass and flowers on grass blocks and nylium, and it does not spread moss.[5][7]
- items.opEvertide is false, so the Evertide Amulet can't place water in dimensions where water evaporates, such as the Nether.[7]
- effects.interdictionMode is true. The Interdiction Torch only affects hostile mobs and projectiles.[7]
- Gem Armor offensive abilities (helmet zap and chestplate explosion) are enabled by difficulty.offensiveAbilities. misc.unsafeKeyBinds is false, so your hand must be empty to ready or trigger them.[7]
Crafting rules in this pack
crafting.craftableTome is false, so the Tome of Knowledge isn't craftable here. crafting.fullKleinStars is also false. When it is true, the Tome of Knowledge and gem armor recipes require full omega Klein Stars.[10]
The pack also adds its own Philosopher's Stone recipes. One turns coal into Alchemical Coal with a Philosopher's Stone.[5]
Another uses Mobius Fuel and the stone to make Aeternalis Fuel.[5]
A third goes the other way, turning Aeternalis Fuel back into Mobius Fuel with the stone.[5]
Crafting Shapeless
Recipe id: projecte:conversions/aeternalis_fuel_to_mobius_fuel_manual_only
The fuels can be compressed into blocks and unpacked again with ordinary mod recipes. For example, you can break an Alchemical Coal Block back down into Alchemical Coal.[5]

Alchemical Bags
Alchemical Bags come in every dye color. Each is crafted from wool of its color, an Alchemical Chest and High Covalence Dust. Here is the black bag as an example.[5]

Tooltips and in-world display
EMC tooltips are on by default (tooltips.emc), and holding shift is not required to see them (tooltips.shift_emc is false). The learned/unlearned text does need shift (tooltips.shift_learned is true). Stat tooltips for ProjectE blocks are on, and item tags in tooltips are off. Tags can be useful if you register custom EMC.[6][9]
misc.lookingAtDisplay is true. The EMC value of a block you look at shows in Jade, TOP or WTHIT.[7]
How do you progress through ProjectE?
5 parts
ProjectE progression in this pack is a ladder: Dark Matter first, then Red Matter, then the endgame gear built from Red Matter. The pack's quests follow the same ladder, and the pack changed some recipes along the way, so don't assume the mod's defaults.[2][5]
Fuel and materials
Dark Matter is crafted from Aeternalis Fuel and a diamond storage block. Red Matter is then crafted from Aeternalis Fuel and Dark Matter. Both are the mod's own recipes.[5]
Crafting Shaped
| any diamond storage block | ||
Recipe id: projecte:dark_matter
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: projecte:red_matter
The pack added its own recipes for the fuel chain. Coal and a Philosopher's Stone make Alchemical Coal. Mobius Fuel and a Philosopher's Stone make Aeternalis Fuel. The pack also added recipes that step fuel back down: Aeternalis Fuel to Mobius Fuel, and Mobius Fuel to Alchemical Coal.[5]
Once you have a pile of Dark Matter or Red Matter, you can compress it into Dark Matter Block or Red Matter Block and break the blocks back down. Dark Matter Blocks are also used in the Dark Matter Furnace recipe and in some of the pack's quests.[4][5]
Dark Matter gear
In this pack, Dark Matter tools and armor are smithing upgrades. You combine a Dark Matter Smithing Template, the matching netherite item and Dark Matter. The Dark Matter Hammer starts from a Netherite Hammer from ftbstuff instead of a vanilla item. Dark Matter Shears are the exception: they are crafted from Dark Matter and diamonds.[5]
Smithing Transform

The pack uses the same smithing pattern for the axe, shovel, hoe, hammer, sword and the armor pieces.

Red Matter gear
Red Matter gear is another smithing step. You take the Dark Matter version of the item, add a Red Matter Smithing Template and Red Matter, and get the Red Matter version. These smithing recipes are added by the pack. Red Matter Shears are the odd one out: they are crafted from Dark Matter Shears and Red Matter.[5]

Following the quests
The gearing up chapter walks you through this ladder. One quest lists Dark Matter tools and Red Matter tools as its tasks, another does the same for armor, and a third does it for swords.[2]
- Tools: "ProjectE Tools" quest lists a Dark Matter tool and a Red Matter tool.[2]
- Armor: "ProjectE Armors" quest lists a Dark Matter armor piece and a Red Matter armor piece.[2]
- Sword: "ProjectE Weapons" quest lists the Dark Matter Sword and the Red Matter Sword.[2]
- "Red Katar" quest asks for the Red Katar and unlocks after the sword quest.[2]
- "Red Morningstar" quest asks for the Red Morningstar and unlocks after the tools quest.[2]
Outside that chapter, "Matter Overload" quest in the resource generation chapter asks for Dark Matter or Red Matter. In the World Engine Tier 5 chapter, "Powering The Void" quest and "Auto-Build The Dark Void Upgrade" quest each ask for a Void Container and a Dark Matter Block.[3][4]
Endgame Red Matter weapons and armor
The Red Katar and Red Morningstar are crafted from finished Red Matter tools plus Red Matter. The katar uses the axe, hoe, shears and sword. The morningstar uses the hammer, pickaxe and shovel. That matches the order the quests above unlock in.[2][5]

Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: projecte:rm_morning_star
The pack changed the Gem armor recipes. Each piece now needs the matching Red Matter armor piece and a Klein Star Omega, plus other ProjectE items. For example, Gem Boots use Red Matter Boots and Swiftwolf's Rending Gale.[5]
The Ring of Arcana is crafted from Red Matter and several other ProjectE rings and bands. This is the mod's own recipe.[5]

How does ProjectE work with other mods?
4 parts
ProjectE doesn't stand alone in this pack. Most of its key items have recipes the pack added itself, and those recipes pull in items from other mods. Dark Matter and Red Matter also show up as ingredients in recipes for other mods' items. Here's where the connections are.[5]
ProjectE items crafted with other mods' items
The Philosopher's Stone has a pack-added recipe, shown below. This is where Cognitive Flux from another mod and Infernal Dust come in.[5]

- The Evertide Amulet, Volcanite Amulet, Ignition Ring and Harvest Goddess Band each use an Ars Nouveau essence (water, fire, fire and earth respectively).[5]
- The Swiftwolf's Rending Gale needs an Electrum Coil Block and a Bottle o' Lightning.[5]
- The Gem of Eternal Density needs Reinforced Obsidian.[5]
- The Black Hole Band needs Enderic Compound and Ender Core, on top of the Iron Band.[5]
- The Mind Stone and Soul Stone both use Blank Slate and Red Matter. The Mind Stone also takes Nugget of Experience from Create.[5]
- The Body Stone comes from a Farmer's Delight cooking recipe, shown below. Look for Cooked Bacon and Hamburger in it.[5]

Smithing upgrades and the quest line
Dark Matter and Red Matter gear is upgraded through smithing rather than crafted from scratch. The pack adds a Dark Matter Smithing Template step that turns netherite gear into Dark Matter gear, and a Red Matter Smithing Template step that turns the Dark Matter piece into Red Matter gear. The Dark Matter Hammer starts from the Netherite Hammer. Both steps are shown below for the pickaxe.[5]

The gearing up quest chapter follows this progression. Quests "ProjectE Tools" quest and "ProjectE Armors" quest ask for Dark Matter and Red Matter tools and armor, and "ProjectE Weapons" quest asks for both swords. "Red Katar" quest (the Red Katar) comes after the sword quest. "Red Morningstar" quest (the Red Morningstar) comes after the tools quest.[2]
World Engine machine recipes
The pack also has World Engine custom machine recipes that take ProjectE items together with other mods' materials as inputs.[5]
- The pack has World Engine recipes involving the Iron Band, Energy Collector MK1, Anti-Matter Relay MK3, Energy Condenser MK2, Dark Matter Pedestal, Interdiction Torch and Repair Talisman, combined with other mods' materials.[5]
- The Red Matter tools and armor are inputs for the Avaritia Infinity gear recipes, for example the World Breaker, alongside Infinity Ingot and Neutronium Ingot.[5]
- Life Stone is an input for a World Engine recipe that also uses the Dragon Heart.[5]
- Red Matter is also an input for a World Engine recipe with the Fusion Crafting Core and another with the Godforged Pearl.[5]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)
Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/infinity_pickaxe_fortune
Other connections
- The pack changed the Avaritia compressor recipe so that Red Matter compresses into Json Singularity.[5]
- The Void Container needs a Dark Matter Block, among other mods' items. Two tier 5 World Engine quests, "Powering The Void" quest and "Auto-Build The Dark Void Upgrade" quest, ask for both the Void Container and a Dark Matter Block.[4][5]
- The Mighty Ender Chicken Egg is crafted with Dark Matter.[5]
- The resource generation chapter has a quest, "Matter Overload" quest, that accepts either Dark Matter or Red Matter.[3]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use ProjectE?
3 parts
ProjectE shows up in the gearing up, world engine tier 5 and resource generation quest chapters in this pack. Gearing up is the biggest by far, a tour of the Dark Matter and Red Matter gear. The remaining chapters only ask for a ProjectE item as part of a bigger goal. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so they are identified by their IDs.[2][3][4]
Gearing up
The tool, armor and sword quests list no prerequisite, so you can tackle them in any order. The Red Katar and Red Morningstar quests come after them.[2]
- "ProjectE Tools" quest covers tools. A Dark Matter task takes any of Dark Matter Axe, Dark Matter Pickaxe, Dark Matter Shovel, Dark Matter Hoe, Dark Matter Shears or Dark Matter Hammer. A Red Matter task takes any of Red Matter Pickaxe, Red Matter Axe, Red Matter Shovel, Red Matter Hoe, Red Matter Shears or Red Matter Hammer.[2]
- "ProjectE Armors" quest covers armor. It asks for a Dark Matter piece (Dark Matter Helmet, Dark Matter Chestplate, Dark Matter Leggings or Dark Matter Boots) and a Red Matter piece (Red Matter Helmet, Red Matter Chestplate, Red Matter Leggings or Red Matter Boots).[2]
- "ProjectE Weapons" quest covers swords. Its tasks are the Dark Matter Sword and the Red Matter Sword.[2]
- "Red Katar" quest comes after the sword quest and asks for the Red Katar.[2]
- "Red Morningstar" quest comes after the tool quest and asks for the Red Morningstar.[2]
So the chapter has small branches: swords lead to the Red Katar, and tools lead to the Red Morningstar. The armor quest stands on its own.[2]
World engine tier 5
This chapter has "Powering The Void" quest and "Auto-Build The Dark Void Upgrade" quest. Both ask for the same items: an Void Container and a Dark Matter Block. Each one comes after a different earlier quest.[4]
Resource generation
"Matter Overload" quest asks you to hand in either Dark Matter or Red Matter. It comes after another quest, so make progress there first.[3]
Which ProjectE config options matter?
4 parts
ProjectE has a lot of config files, but only a handful of options change how you play. This pack moves a few of them away from the mod defaults, so check these before you plan an EMC build.[7]
Values the pack changed
- difficulty.katarDeathAura is 25 in this pack, down from the mod default of 1000. It sets the damage the Katar's Extra Function deals.[7]
- effects.timePedBonus is 8 in this pack, down from the mod default of 18. It sets the bonus ticks the Watch of Flowing Time gives while it sits in a pedestal.[7]
- cooldown.player.gemChest is 2 in this pack, up from the mod default of 0. It is the cooldown on the Gem Chestplate explosion.[7]
- cooldown.player.projectile is 2 in this pack, up from the mod default of 0. It is the cooldown for firing projectiles.[7]
Other gameplay options
- crafting.craftableTome is false, so the Tome of Knowledge cannot be crafted in this pack.[10]
- crafting.fullKleinStars is false, so the Tome of Knowledge and Gem Armor recipes do not require full omega Klein Stars.[10]
- difficulty.offensiveAbilities is true, so the Gem Armor helmet zap and chestplate explosion are on. misc.unsafeKeyBinds is false, so your hand must be empty to ready or trigger them.[7]
- difficulty.covalenceLoss is 1, the same as the mod default. The option's own description says 0.5 would return half the EMC cost when burning an item.[7]
- items.pickaxeAoeVeinMining is false, so the Dark/Red Matter Pick and Star vein mine the ore you right click instead of every ore in an area around you.[7]
- items.opEvertide is false, so the Evertide Amulet cannot place water in dimensions where water evaporates, such as the Nether. items.harvBandIndirect is also false, so the Harvest Goddess Band does not passively grow things like tall grass and flowers.[7]
- items.enableTimeWatch is true, so the Watch of Flowing Time is enabled.[7]
EMC mapping
In this pack most automatic EMC mappers are switched off, including mappers.Crafting-Mapper.enabled with all its recipe-type mappers, mappers.Tag-Mapper.enabled and mappers.Brewing-Mapper.enabled. Only mappers.Custom-EMC-Mapper.enabled and mappers.Custom-Conversion-Mapper.enabled are on.[11]
usePregenerated is true. EMC mapping results are written to a pregenerated file, and the mapping only runs again if that file is missing, the setting is turned off, or the file fails to parse. In this pack that file lists values for ProjectE's own items, such as 1,048,576 EMC for Klein Star Omega.[11][12]
dumpToFile is true, so the internals of the EMC calculation are written to a mapping dump file. logFoundExploits is also true, so known EMC exploits are logged.[11]
The custom EMC file has no entries in this pack, and its own comment says to use the in-game commands to edit it.[8]
Tooltips and display
EMC tooltips are on through tooltips.emc, and they show without holding shift because tooltips.shift_emc is false. The learned/unlearned text does need shift, since tooltips.shift_learned is true. Item tags are hidden because tooltips.tag is false. The option description says tags are useful for custom EMC registration.[9]
misc.lookingAtDisplay is true, so Jade, TOP or WTHIT shows the EMC value of a block when you look at it.[7]
