Refined Storage is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 2.0.9. An elegant solution to your hoarding problem. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Refined Storage?

1 part

This pack includes Refined Storage 2.0.9, the NeoForge build. Its quest book gives the mod its own chapter, called "refined_storage_2", and that chapter is the best map of how the mod unfolds as you play.[1][2]

The chapter has two starting points. One opens with "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest, which asks for Quartz Enriched Iron, Sky Steel Ingot and a Machine Casing. That quest comes after a quest outside this chapter. The Sky Steel Ingot is not a Refined Storage item, so the chapter already ties into another mod in the pack. The other starting point is the disk drive and cable branch, which also follows a quest outside the chapter.[2]

How the quest chapter is laid out

The chapter also pulls in add-on items. The Disk Interface quest accepts higher-tier disk interfaces from another mod, and the wireless grid quest also lists a wireless crafting grid from a Refined Storage add-on.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show Refined Storage on the ATM Star quest path, so check the ATM Star chapters in the quest book before relying on it there.

How do you get started with Refined Storage?

4 parts

Refined Storage turns your pile of chests into one network you can search and automate. In this pack, nearly every recipe you will make early on needs Quartz Enriched Iron, so your first job is a steady supply of it. The quest chapter points the same way: "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest asks for Quartz Enriched Iron, a Sky Steel Ingot and a Machine Casing, and most of the other quests in the chapter unlock after it.[2][3]

Step 1: Quartz Enriched Iron

The pack gives you several ways to make it. It adds recipes for Create, Ender IO, Extended Industrialization and Immersive Engineering machines, and it changes the Mystical Agriculture and Productive Bees routes too. Use whichever machine you already have running. Here is the Create version:[3]

Step 2: Machine Casing

The Machine Casing recipe is added by the pack, so don't expect the mod's default. Make a few, because later devices like the Disk Drive and the Detector use it.[3]

This Machine Casing recipe is added by the pack.

Step 3: Build the network

  1. Make Cable. Cables connect devices to each other, and you can also place devices directly against each other. The cable quest is "Cables" quest.[2][4]
  2. Make a Disk Drive to hold your storage disks. "Disk Drive" quest pairs it with the Storage Housing.[2][4]
  3. Make a 1k Storage Part for your first item storage. "1k Storage Part" quest covers it, and the 4k Storage Part recipe takes a 1k part, so the bigger parts build on it.[2][3]
  4. Make a Grid so you can see and use what is stored, then upgrade it to a Crafting Grid for crafting. Both are in "Grids" quest.[2][4]

Tip: Your network needs power: the mod's advancements say you use one or more Controllers to provide the network with energy.[4]

Where to go next

After the cable and the disk drive, the quest chapter branches out. From cables you unlock the Importer, Exporter and Interface in "System Input & Output" quest. The Constructor and Destructor move blocks between the world and the network, and their quests are "Constructor" quest and "Destructor" quest. Autocrafting comes after the Grid, starting with the Pattern Grid in "Auto Crafting" quest.[2][4]

How does Refined Storage work?

6 parts

A Refined Storage setup is one storage network: one or more Controllers provide its energy, and everything else (storage, grids, importers, autocrafters) connects to it. Here's how the pieces fit together, as far as the language file currently describes them.[4]

Building the network

  • Controllers currently provide the network with energy, and you can use one or several.[4]
  • Cable links devices together, or you can place devices directly against each other.[4]
  • A Relay can turn whole sections of the network on or off, and lets you start new branches.[4]
  • A Network Transmitter, a Network Receiver and a Network Card currently let you add components without running cables.[4]
  • A Detector currently uses redstone to check which resources are in the network.[4]

Storage

A Disk Drive currently holds your storage disks. Items go in on a Storage Disk, and fluids on a Fluid Storage Disk. A Disk Interface transfers resources between the network and the disks it holds.[4]

An External Storage lets the network use an outside block, like a chest, as storage. Each storage has an access mode. With Insert and extract, the network can do both. With Insert only, the network can only put things in, though the contents still show in a Grid. With Extract only, the network can only take things out.[4]

For on-the-go access, a Portable Grid currently shows the contents of disks without needing a network. A Wireless Grid reaches your network's resources wirelessly. A Storage Monitor lets you view, insert or extract resources in a storage network.[4]

Moving things in and out

  • Importer: gets resources into the network, as currently described.[4]
  • Exporter: gets resources out of the network, as currently described.[4]
  • Interface: currently exports and imports items at the same time.[4]
  • Constructor: currently places blocks from the network into the world.[4]
  • Destructor: currently takes blocks from the world into the network.[4]
  • An Autocrafting Upgrade in an Interface, Exporter or Constructor currently autocrafts resources on demand. Other upgrades improve various devices.[4]

Autocrafting

As currently described, you create patterns in a Pattern Grid, and an Autocrafter uses them to automate crafting. A Crafting Grid gives you crafting abilities right at the network.[4]

The Advanced Processor in that recipe is not crafted on a bench. It is smelted from a Raw Advanced Processor:[3]

Smelting

Recipe id: refinedstorage:advanced_processor

If one Autocrafter faces another, they form a chain, so more patterns can feed into a single machine. The first one is the head of the chain.[4]

Each Autocrafter currently has a lock mode that pauses it until a condition is met. The modes listed are: Never; Lock until all outputs are received; Lock until connected machine is empty; Lock until high redstone signal; Lock until low redstone signal; and Lock until redstone pulse is received.[4]

An Autocrafter Manager gives you one central interface for your patterns, for any Autocrafter set to be visible to it. You can search it by pattern inputs, pattern outputs or Autocrafter names. An Autocrafting Monitor shows the status of your tasks and lets you cancel them. It reports problems such as a locked Autocrafter, a missing resource or no machine found.[4]

Security

When a Security Manager is active, it currently protects the network by default and blocks all operations. You then add Security Cards to permit or deny specific operations for a player.[4]

What this pack changes

The pack adds its own ways to make Quartz Enriched Copper. There are recipes for Create mixing, Ender IO alloying, the Extended Industrialization alloy smelter, and the Immersive Engineering alloy furnace and arc furnace. The Ender IO version is the one that makes 4 per craft. Here is the Create one:[3]

  • any all quartz
  • 3× any copper ingot

The pack also changes the Mystical Agriculture essence recipe for Quartz Enriched Iron, so one craft gives 8 of it.[3]

Finally, the pack's own script adds creative versions of the Importer, Exporter, Constructor, Destructor and Disk Interface. Each is made by combining the matching Refined Storage device with a Creative Ascension item. The results come from the Cable Tiers mod, for example Creative Importer and Creative Exporter.[5]

How do you progress through Refined Storage?

6 parts

Refined Storage has its own quest chapter in this pack, and the quests follow a clear order: get the base material, build a disk setup, then branch out into crafting, networking, wireless and upgrades. Every quest in the chapter asks you to hold items, so you progress by crafting the things below.[2]

Tier 1: the base material and Machine Casing

The first quest in the chapter, "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest, wants Quartz Enriched Iron, Sky Steel Ingot and Machine Casing. It unlocks four branches: "Upgrade Base" quest (the Upgrade item), "Wrench" quest (the Wrench), "Useful Blocks" quest (Relay, Storage Monitor and Detector) and "Configuration Card" quest (the Configuration Card).[2]

The pack adds its own ways to make Quartz Enriched Iron. There are machine recipes for Create mixing, EnderIO alloying, Extended Industrialization's alloy smelter and two Immersive Engineering machines (the alloy smelter and the arc furnace). The pack also changed the Mystical Agriculture essence recipe and the Productive Bees centrifuge recipe for it, so you have plenty of options depending on which mods you're already running.[3]

Machine Casing is a recipe the pack adds itself, so don't expect the mod default here. Check the one below.[3]

Tier 2: cables, disks and your first grid

A second line of quests starts at the Cable quest, "Cables" quest. From it you unlock the Exporter, Importer and Interface in "System Input & Output" quest, the Constructor in "Constructor" quest, the Destructor in "Destructor" quest and the External Storage in "External Storage" quest.[2]

The storage side starts at "Disk Drive" quest, which asks for a Disk Drive and a Storage Housing. That quest leads to the Grid and Crafting Grid ("Grids" quest), the Disk Interface ("Disk Interface" quest) and your first storage part. The Disk Interface quest also accepts the Elite, Ultra, Mega or Creative disk interfaces from the cabletiers namespace.[2]

Storage part progression

Item storage is a straight chain of quests: 1k Storage Part in "1k Storage Part" quest, then 4k Storage Part, 16k Storage Part and finally 64k Storage Part. Each step is its own quest, in that order.[2]

Fluid storage runs in parallel, starting at 64B Fluid Storage Part and continuing through the 256B Fluid Storage Part and 1024B Fluid Storage Part to the 4096B Fluid Storage Part. This chain also hangs off the Disk Drive quest.[2]

Each item storage part above the 1k part is crafted from the previous part, so you can't skip ahead. Here are the first rungs and the top rung of the item chain.[3]

Tier 3: autocrafting

Once you have a Grid, "Auto Crafting" quest asks for a Pattern Grid and a Pattern. Three quests follow from there: the Autocrafting Monitor ("Autocrafting Monitor" quest), the Autocrafter ("Autocrafter" quest) and the Autocrafter Manager ("Autocrafter Manager" quest).[2]

Tier 4: networking, security and wireless

The Grid quest also opens "Wireless Networks" quest (Network Card, Network Transmitter and Network Receiver) and "Wireless Transmitter" quest (the Wireless Transmitter). The network quest leads to "System Security" quest, which covers the Security Manager, Security Card and Fallback Security Card.[2]

Wireless finishes at "Wireless Grids" quest, which asks for the Wireless Grid, the Wireless Autocrafting Monitor and the Wireless Crafting Grid.[2]

Upgrades

After the base Upgrade item ("Upgrade Base" quest), five quests cover the specialised upgrades. "Regulator Upgrade" quest covers the Regulator Upgrade. "Speed & Stack Upgrades" quest covers the Speed and Stack Upgrades. "Fortune & Silk Touch Upgrades" quest covers a Fortune Upgrade (any of the three levels) plus the Silk Touch Upgrade. "Autocrafting Upgrade" quest covers the Autocrafting Upgrade, and "Range Upgrade" quest covers the Range Upgrade.[2]

The Fortune Upgrades use an enchanted-book upgrade recipe type rather than a normal grid layout.[3]

How does Refined Storage work with other mods?

4 parts

Several other mods plug straight into Refined Storage in this pack. The in-pack recipes show links with Extra Storage, Cable Tiers and Advanced Peripherals, and the Refined Storage quest chapter also asks for items from a few more mods.[2][3]

Extra Storage: bigger disks and tougher IO

Extra Storage extends the Refined Storage storage line. It adds item parts, disks and storage blocks at 256k, 1024k, 4096k and 16384k. It also adds a fluid line at 16384b, 65536b, 262144b and 1048576b. These are the mod's own recipes, and the pack hasn't changed them.[3]

Extra Storage also has upgraded IO: the Advanced Exporter and the Advanced Importer. Their recipes are shown below.[3]

Cable Tiers: Elite and Ultra versions of Refined Storage blocks

Cable Tiers adds Elite and Ultra versions of the Autocrafter, Constructor, Destructor, Disk Interface, Exporter, Importer and Interface. The pack changes all of these recipes. Each Elite block is built from the matching Refined Storage block, and each Ultra block is built from the Elite one. Both steps also use the Advanced Processor.[3]

The Refined Storage quest chapter also asks for items from other mods. Quest "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest has you hand in Quartz Enriched Iron, Sky Steel Ingot and a Machine Casing. The wireless quest "Wireless Grids" quest asks for the Wireless Grid, the Wireless Autocrafting Monitor and the Wireless Crafting Grid.[2]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Refined Storage?

4 parts

Refined Storage has one quest chapter in this pack, called refined_storage_2. Every quest in it is untitled, so I point to them by quest ID. Each one asks you to get certain items, and the quests unlock in a tree. Two of the starting points depend on quests that aren't in the data I have, so I can't say what comes before them.[2]

Branch 1: Machine casing and upgrades

This branch starts with "Welcome to Refined Storage 2" quest. It asks for Quartz Enriched Iron, Sky Steel Ingot and a Machine Casing. Four quests unlock after it.[2]

Five quests follow the basic upgrade quest. They all unlock together, so you can do them in any order.[2]

Branch 2: Cables and disk drives

The second branch splits into two quests: "Cables" quest asks for the Cable, and "Disk Drive" quest asks for the Disk Drive and the Storage Housing.[2]

The cable quest unlocks the network-edge blocks:[2]

Storage part chains

The disk drive quest leads into two linear chains. The item chain starts at "1k Storage Part" quest (1k Storage Part). Then come "4k Storage Part" quest (4k Storage Part), "16k Storage Part" quest (16k Storage Part) and finally "64k Storage Part" quest (64k Storage Part).[2]

The fluid chain starts at "64B Fluid Storage Part" quest (64B Fluid Storage Part). Then come "256B Fluid Storage Part" quest (256B Fluid Storage Part), "1024B Fluid Storage Part" quest (1024B Fluid Storage Part) and finally "4096B Fluid Storage Part" quest (4096B Fluid Storage Part).[2]

Grids, crafting and wireless

Two more quests also unlock after the disk drive quest. "Disk Interface" quest asks for the Disk Interface plus one of the CableTiers disk interfaces: elite, ultra, mega or creative. "Grids" quest asks for the Grid and the Crafting Grid, and it leads to the rest of the chapter.[2]

Tip: Two of the quests accept items from other mods: the Sky Steel Ingot in the first quest, and the CableTiers disk interfaces in the disk interface quest. Plan for those early.[2]
