Just Dire Things is a mod in All the Mods 11 0.12.0-beta, where it is version 1.6.11. A collection of Random Blocks and Items for Automation (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Just Dire Things?

3 parts

Just Dire Things adds a lot of machines focused on automation, plus goo-based resource upgrades, tiered armor, tools, wands and a handful of utility items. This pack ships version 1.6.11 of the mod.[1][2][3][4][5]

Progression through goo

The backbone of the mod is goo. You place a goo block, feed it a specific resource to activate it, then put an eligible block next to it and it transforms. Each tier converts stronger blocks into new resources, and higher tiers can do everything lower tiers can, only faster.[6]

Tip: After a block is transformed, there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating by feeding it another item. While it is inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes.[6]

Armor and tools

Each resource tier has a matching armor set, and armor and tools both accept upgrades. You craft the upgrade item, then combine it with your gear in a smithing table. Smithing-table upgrades to the next tier keep your installed upgrades.[11][12]

The power requirements climb with the tiers. Blazegold gear repairs itself when you drop it into a lava source block. Celestigem armor stores 10,000 FE, and Eclipse Alloy armor stores 500,000 FE. A Pocket Generator is the recommended way to keep the powered pieces charged, and it accepts coal or the upgraded coals from this mod.[13][14][15][16]

The mod also adds utility tools such as the Ferricore Wrench for rotating blocks and linking Swappers, the Creature Catcher for capturing and releasing entities, and the Machine Settings Copier for copying settings between machines. Wands include the Blazejet Wand, which has a built-in air burst, and the Polymorphic Wand, which randomly changes mobs from one form to another.[17][18][19][20][21]

Where it fits

The goo chain makes this a good mid-to-late-game path for upgrading gear. The tiers follow the iron, gold, diamond and netherite ladder, and you can work through them at your own pace.[7][8][9][10]

Unverified The sources do not confirm any place for this mod on the ATM Star path or any quests that involve it, so don't count on either.

How do you get started with Just Dire Things?

6 parts

Just Dire Things is built around goo. You use goo to turn ordinary vanilla materials into better ones, then turn those materials into tools, armor and machines. Here's the order I'd tackle it in.[6][7][8][9][10]

Start with Primogel Goo

Primogel Goo is the first tier. It turns Iron into Ferricore and is crafted from simple Overworld materials, so it's the natural first thing to build.[7]

  1. Craft a goo block and place it in your world.[6]
  2. Activate the goo by feeding it the resource it consumes. The goo block tells you which one.[6]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[6]
Tip: After a transformation there's a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating by feeding it another item. While it's inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes.[6]

Move up the tiers

Each goo tier converts a stronger block into a new resource. Higher tier goo can always craft everything a lower tier can, and it is much faster.[6]

Make your first tools

Every material tier has its own set of tools and armor, and each of them can take upgrades. Once you have Blazegold, a Blazegold Pickaxe is a good first tool to upgrade: the Hammer ability is 3x3 in a Blazegold Pickaxe and 7x7 in an Eclipse Alloy Pickaxe.[22][23]

Blazegold armor and the Blazejet Wand also have Lava Repair. Drop a damaged piece into a lava source block and it repairs fully.[13][20][24][25][26]

Get around with the Blazejet Wand

The Blazejet Wand has the air burst ability built in. Right click to blast yourself in the direction you're facing. While you hold it in your hand you take no fall damage, but it has to be in your hand for that to work.[20]

Learn how upgrades work

To install an upgrade, craft the upgrade item, then put your tool and the upgrade in a smithing table. Shift-click a tool in your hand to open its settings and toggle abilities. The default hotkey to activate or deactivate a tool is V, and when a tool is deactivated, all of its abilities are off.[22][23]

Upgrading a tool to the next tier in the smithing table keeps the upgrades you've installed. Check JEI for the recipe.[22]

Machines and power

Most machines come in a simple and an advanced version. Simple ones need no power but generally affect only the block or entity directly in front of them. Advanced ones need power, can cover a large area and have filters. A good first machine is the Simple Block Breaker, since it needs no power.[27]

Celestigem and Eclipse Alloy armor runs on Forge Energy, so you'll want a Pocket Generator to keep it charged. It burns coal or the upgraded coals from this mod, and higher tier fuels give more Forge Energy per tick.[14][15][16]

How does Just Dire Things work?

9 parts

Just Dire Things is mostly about automation, and almost every machine follows the same pattern. Learn that pattern once and the whole mod clicks. Most machines come in a simple and an advanced version.[2][27]

Simple machines don't need power. They can generally only affect a block or entity directly in front of them, and you control how fast they run with the Speed(ticks) button. Advanced machines are much more powerful but need power to run. They usually cover a large, configurable area and have filters. They also automatically charge any Forge Energy items placed inside them.[27]

Redstone and speed controls

The redstone button decides when a machine runs. By default redstone is ignored, so the machine always runs. Low means it only runs when it is not receiving a signal, and High means it only runs when it is. Pulse does a single operation per redstone pulse. For a simple machine that is usually one thing, like breaking one block, while an advanced machine may do everything in its area at once.[28]

The Speed(ticks) button sets how often the machine runs while active. The default is 20, which is once per second. You can go as low as 1, which is every tick, but only do that if you really need to because it can contribute to lag.[28]

Area and filters on advanced machines

Advanced machines typically have the same controls as their simple versions plus several more. Click the Render area button to see the affected area in the world. The RAD button changes the radius, and the OFF button moves the center of the area with an offset. Keep Render area on while you test them.[29]

Most advanced machines also have a row of filter slots for items, blocks or entities. You can drag from JEI into them, or click a slot with a stack in your hand. To filter entities, use a spawn egg or a Creature Catcher. The allow/deny button flips the logic. In allow mode only the listed things are affected, and in deny mode everything except the listed things is. Compare NBT makes the filter stricter, for example matching enchantments, or a specific color of sheep when you use a Creature Catcher.[29]

Tip: The Item Collector behaves like an advanced machine even though it is made from tier 1 resources. It vacuums item entities in its area into the inventory it is attached to, and you can filter what it picks up and increase the pickup speed.[30]

Breaking, placing and swapping

The Simple Block Breaker needs a tool, such as a pickaxe or shovel, to break the block it faces. It can't operate without one. It damages the tool or consumes power whenever it breaks a block, just as it would for a player.[31]

The Advanced Block Breaker covers a much larger area. In filter block mode you choose which blocks to break. In filter items mode you choose which drops are allowed, so a cobblestone filter can break stone or cobblestone, unless the pick has silk touch. The direction button sets which face you break from, which matters if your tool has a hammer-like ability.[32]

The Simple Block Placer places the block held in its inventory into the space in front of it when powered, and its direction button is handy for things like torches. On the Advanced Block Placer, the filters say which blocks it may place onto. This respects the direction setting, so with 'down' it only places on top of the filtered blocks.[33][34]

Swappers work in pairs. Place two Simple Swapper, then right click the first and the second with a Ferricore Wrench. A message confirms they are bound, and the UI shows a green button for the link. You can then swap the blocks in front of them, entities, or both. Block entities like chests swap fine, so you can trade out whole chests or machines.[17][35]

The Advanced Swapper adds an area of effect and block and entity filtering. When two are bound, the radius settings replicate to the partner, so changing one changes both. With a Creature Catcher in the filter and compare NBT on, you can teleport only a specific variant like blue sheep. Deny mode sends everything except that variant.[36]

Clickers and sensors

The Simple Clicker simulates a right click, a left click or a hold click with the item in its slot, or with an empty slot for buttons. Its target button picks what it clicks: blocks, air, hostile, passive, adult, child, player or all living. The Advanced Clicker adds a larger area and filtering. It suits a mob farm set to left click hostiles, or an animal breeder set to right click adults.[37][38]

The Simple Sensor emits a redstone signal when its target is found in its area, and the Advanced Sensor can also count how many matches exist. By default the advanced version triggers on more than 0 matches. One example use is sensing fewer than 10 adult cows and signalling a clicker to feed them. You can also right click a block in the filter slot to filter on a specific block state, like an open or closed door.[39][40]

Power

The Simple Coal Generator burns normal furnace fuel or specialized coals to make Forge Energy. Higher coal tiers (Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal and Eclipse Ember) raise both the FE per tick and the total FE generated. The Simple Fuel Generator builds on it using refined fuels, which come in 3 tiers.[41][42]

The Energy Transmitter sends power wirelessly. Connect it to a generator so its internal buffer fills, then set its area of effect. Anything in that area that can receive Forge Energy gets filled from the buffer, and you can filter which machines receive power. Two transmitters in range of each other balance themselves automatically, with no energy loss.[43]

The Pocket Generator keeps portable gear charged. Open it and insert coal or this mod's upgraded coals. Higher tier fuels give more Forge Energy per tick. It can also take a Fuel Canister, which is useful because tools and armor run on Forge Energy. For example, the Celestigem Boots hold 10,000 FE, while the Eclipse Alloy boots hold 500,000 FE.[14][15][16]

Unverified The guide says the Energy Transmitter's wireless energy loss is configurable, but no config file for this mod is available, so the loss percentage in this pack is unverified.

Watch out: The Fuel Canister accepts any fuel, such as coal or wood, but not lava buckets. There is no way to get the fuel back out once it's inside. Its fuel multiplier is averaged with whatever is already in the canister.[44]

Fluids and experience

The Fluid Canister holds up to 8 buckets and works like a bucket on right click. Shift right-click cycles its auto-fill setting for other fluid containers in your inventory: None, Just Dire Things items only, or ALL, which includes other mods.[45]

The Simple Fluid Collector tries to collect any fluid in front of it into an internal buffer, and it holds only one fluid at a time. Its item slot can fill a bucket or a canister. The Advanced Fluid Collector covers a larger area, and you filter fluids by putting buckets in its filter slots.[46][47]

The Simple Fluid Placer has a slot for buckets or a Fluid Canister and a tank on the left showing which fluid it stores. Once it holds enough fluid, and nothing is already in the space in front of it, it places the fluid into the world. The advanced version covers a larger area and uses filter slots to choose which blocks it places fluid on.[48][49]

The Experience Holder stores your levels, collects nearby experience orbs and can top players up to a target level. It also acts as a fluid tank, converting experience into XP Fluid at 20mb per experience point. It can be filled or emptied with a bucket, a Fluid Canister, or pipes. It keeps its experience when broken.[50]

Inventories and item handling

The Inventory Holder works like a chest with a UI that mirrors your player inventory. Control-click an item in it to save a slot filter. 'Filtered Items Only' blocks inserting into unfiltered slots, and 'Compare Stack Sizes' limits filtered slots to their saved stack size. The top-left buttons control how pipes and hoppers interact with it. Extraction ignores filtered slots.[51]

The Player Accessor lets hoppers or pipes insert into and extract from a player's inventory. You can assign each side to different slots, for example the top face to armor and the bottom face to the offhand.[52]

The Simple Dropper drops items in a chosen direction, in a stack size you set up to 64, with a configurable pickup delay that defaults to 0. The Advanced Dropper keeps the offset but has no radius. It has a 3x3 grid of droppable items, and its filter slots decide both what drops and in what order. If it runs out of the next item, it stops until it gets more.[53][54]

Goo transformation

Goo changes blocks placed next to it. Craft a goo block and place it, then activate it by feeding it the resource it consumes, which the goo block indicates. Then place an eligible block beside it. Higher tier goo can do everything lower tiers can, and does it faster.[6]

After each transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. While inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already underway finishes. The tiers run Primogel Goo (Iron into Ferricore), Blazebloom Goo (Gold into Blazegold), VoidShimmer Goo (Diamonds into Celestigem) and Shadowpulse Goo (Netherite into Eclipse Alloy).[6][7][8][9][10]

Time machines

The Time Wand needs both Forge Energy and Time Fluid. Right click a ticking block, such as a furnace or crops, to double its speed, and keep clicking to go to 4x, 8x and beyond. Each acceleration costs both resources based on the size of the speed-up, and the boost lasts 30 seconds.[55]

Unverified The in-game text for the Time Wand's maximum speed multiplier shows an unresolved placeholder, and no config file for this mod is available here, so the pack's actual cap is unverified.

The Paradox Machine snapshots blocks (raw ores only) and entities in its area. After you clear the area, it can restore them using a significant amount of power and Time Fluid. A button toggles entities only, blocks only, or both, and restored entities may not be exactly identical to the originals.[56]

Watch out: Overusing the Paradox Machine builds up paradox energy, which the machine shows in its UI. This can spawn a Paradox that grows, absorbs any blocks, items or entities in its area, and grows faster the more it consumes. Per the guide, feeding it a Time Crystal seals it.[56][57]

How do you progress through Just Dire Things?

4 parts

Progression in Just Dire Things revolves around goo. You craft a goo block, feed it, and it converts blocks placed next to it into stronger materials. There are four goo tiers, and each one transforms a different base resource.[6][7][8][9][10]

How goo works

  1. Craft a goo block and place it in your world.[6]
  2. Activate the goo by feeding it the specific resource it consumes. The goo block tells you which one.[6]
  3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[6]
Tip: After a transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. While it is inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes. Higher tier goo can do everything a lower tier can, and it is much faster.[6]

Tools and armor

Every material tier has its own tools and armor. In order, those are Ferricore (for example Ferricore Pickaxe), Blazegold (Blazegold Pickaxe), Celestigem (Celestigem Pickaxe) and Eclipse Alloy (Eclipse Alloy Pickaxe). Each material also has a bow, such as Ferricore Bow and Eclipse Alloy Bow.[11][22][58]

Tools and armor accept upgrades. You craft the upgrade item and combine it with your gear in a smithing table. Use the upgrade templates to move from one tier to the next while keeping your installed upgrades. The in-game guide says to check JEI for the smithing recipe, and to hold shift over a tool to see which upgrades it supports.[11][22][23]

  • Tools can be switched on or off with a hotkey, which is 'v' by default. While a tool is off, all of its abilities are off.[22]
  • Shift-click a tool in your hand to open its configuration screen. From there you toggle upgrades, change their settings, or assign hotkeys.[22]
  • For armor, open that same screen with a tool in hand and click your armor in it. Active abilities such as invulnerability must be assigned to a hotkey.[11]

Machines: simple and advanced

Most machines come in two variants. Simple versions, like the Simple Block Breaker, need no power but generally only affect the block or entity directly in front of them. Advanced versions, like the Advanced Block Breaker, need power but cover a large area you can configure in the UI, and they have filters. They also automatically charge any Forge Energy items placed inside them.[27][32]

The advanced area is adjusted with the RAD (radius) and OFF (offset) buttons, and 'Render area' shows it in the world. Filters can use an allow or deny list, and you can set them with a spawn egg or a Creature Catcher when filtering entities.[29]

Unverified The sources here show no quests involving this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path, so the pack's quest book gives no guided order for it. Use the goo tiers above as your progression ladder.

How does Just Dire Things work with other mods?

3 parts

In this pack, the connection to another mod that the sources confirm is Productive Bees. It adds bees themed around Just Dire Things resources, and it ties them to the mod's goo blocks and raw materials.[58]

Goo blocks and Productive Bees

Each of the four goo tiers has a matching bee conversion recipe from Productive Bees. Primogel Goo gives the ferricore bee, Blazebloom Goo gives the blazegold bee, VoidShimmer Goo gives the celestigem bee, and Shadowpulse Goo gives the eclipse alloy bee.[58]

The bees follow the same progression as the goo itself. In Just Dire Things, Primogel Goo turns iron into Ferricore, Blazebloom Goo turns gold into Blazegold, VoidShimmer Goo turns diamonds into Celestigem, and Shadowpulse Goo turns netherite into Eclipse Alloy.[7][8][9][10][58]
