Horse Powered is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 3.11.5. Hand-cranked and animal-powered machinery focusing on early game grinding, chopping, pressing, drying, and crushing. Leash horses, donkeys, or llamas to automate the line or generate Forge Energy. Data-driven recipes with full JEI, EMI, and Jade support. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Horse Powered?

3 parts

Horse Powered is pre-industrial machinery for the early game. You grind, chop, press, dry and crush things by hand first, then hand the work to leashed animals. Horses, donkeys and llamas walk in circles around a machine to power it, and they can also generate Forge Energy for the rest of your tech.[1]

This pack includes Horse Powered 3.11.5.[2]

What you get

  • Grindstones: a Hand Grindstone for manual milling and a Horse Grindstone for continuous milling. Think grain to flour, bone to bonemeal and ore to dust.[1]
  • Chopping: the Chopping Block is for splitting logs with an axe, and the Horse Chopper does bulk processing for you.[1][3]
  • Horse Press: extracts fluids from items, for example seeds to seed oil or honeycomb to honey.[1]
  • Drying Rack: a passive rack that holds 8 items at once and needs no power, fuel or worker. Hoppers and pipes can feed it from any side.[4]
  • Granite Anvil: a stone-tier crushing station for rock-cycle conversions. You right-click a valid input with a stone-or-better pickaxe.[1]
  • Generator: turns worker labor into Forge Energy when it gets a redstone signal. A lever inside the walking area works fine.[1]
  • Animal Trap: a passive cage that captures passive animals with bait and produces their drops over time.[5][6]
  • Work Saddle: captures a leashable worker so you can move it somewhere else without leads and fences.[1]
  • Flint and Tinder: a slower fire starter that you hold to use, like drawing a bow.[7]
  • Creative Battery: a creative-only energy block for testing setups. It is not craftable.[8]

Getting started

  1. Craft a Hand Grindstone or a Chopping Block and start processing by hand.[1]
  2. Build a Horse Grindstone, Horse Chopper or Horse Press when you want automation.[1]
  3. Clear the working area around the powered machine and give it a sturdy floor.[1][5]
  4. Attach a horse, donkey, mule, llama or other leashable mob with a lead.[1]
  5. Insert items, pull the outputs (or let a Wooden Hopper do it) and scale up.[1]
Tip: Shift+Right-click a horse-powered block with an empty hand to see the working area it needs. The floor under the path also changes the worker's speed: dirt and grass slow it down, dirt paths run at full speed, and packed ice doubles it.[5]

How do you get started with Horse Powered?

4 parts

Horse Powered is about hand-cranked machines first, then animal-powered upgrades once you have a herd. So you start with the manual blocks and move to horses later. Here is the order I'd go in.[1][9]

Start with the Hand Grindstone

The Hand Grindstone is a great early-game option before you have horses. Insert an item, then right-click with an empty hand to turn it. The output shows up on the grinding surface and you right-click it to collect.[9]

Grain to Flour is the headline job, and the pack has a wheat to flour recipe for it. Each turn costs a little hunger. In this pack the exhaustion is general.grindstoneExhaustion at 0.1, which is the mod default.[1][10][11]

    Next, the Chopping Block

Next comes the Chopping Block for splitting logs. Place a log on it, right-click with an axe to chop it, then right-click again to collect the output.[3]

Your axe takes damage in this pack (general.shouldDamageAxe is true). Manual chopping takes more strikes than horse chopping by a multiplier, general.choppingMultiplier, which is 4 here (the mod default). JEI shows the real chop count for each recipe.[3][11]

    Then the Granite Anvil

The Granite Anvil crushes stone into cobblestone, cobblestone into gravel, and so on. You strike with a stone-tier or better pickaxe, and a wooden pickaxe is not strong enough. The pickaxe takes durability damage on every strike.[11][12]

    Going horse-powered

Once you have a horse, donkey, mule or llama, craft the Horse Grindstone to automate your grinding. The Horse Chopper works the same way for logs.[13][14]

    1. Place the machine with at least a 7x7 clear space around it.[13]
    2. Lead your animal, then right-click the machine while holding the lead.[13]
    3. Shift+right-click with an empty hand to check the area: green is clear, red is obstructed.[13]
    4. Right-click the machine with items to insert them, and right-click again to take the output.[13]
Tip: The floor under the walking path changes speed. In this pack dirt and grass run at 0.5x, dirt paths at 1.0x and packed ice at 2.0x, and the final speed is the average of the blocks along the path. A small number of obstructions, 2 by default, is tolerated inside the ring.[11][15]

The Work Saddle lets you capture a leashable worker and release it somewhere else, so you can move your animals around without leashes and fences.[1]

    How does Horse Powered work?

    7 parts

Horse Powered gives most machines two tiers: a hand-cranked starter block and an animal-powered upgrade. You work the manual blocks yourself, then hand the job to a leashed horse once you have a herd. This section covers how the working area, workers, fluids and hopper automation behave in this pack.[1][5]

    Workers and the working area

The Horse Grindstone, Horse Chopper, Horse Press and Horse Powered Generator all need a 7x7 working area. The worker walks a circular path on the outer ring of that area, and the blocks under that path can speed it up or slow it down.[13][14][15][16][17]

    1. Place the machine in a clear 7x7 area.[13][15]
    2. Lead a horse (or another valid creature) with a lead.[13]
    3. Right-click the machine while holding the lead to attach the creature. It then walks in circles and powers the machine.[13]
    4. Shift+Right-click the machine with an empty hand to see the required area. Green means clear, red means obstructed.[13][15]
    • The ring must be clear at the machine's level and one block above. The 7x7 square one block below must be sturdy floor. Dirt paths and any block listed in the path speed config also count as floor.[15]
    • Levers placed inside the ring are always allowed, which is handy for toggling the generator from the floor.[15][17]
    • Valid workers are horses, donkeys, mules, llamas and trader llamas.[18][19]
    • Right-click the machine with an empty hand to release the attached creature.[13][14][16]
    • The worker is stored on the block as a virtual ghost render. It cannot be killed, despawned or wander off, and breaking the block respawns the original entity with its full NBT.[1]

A few blocks such as chests, hoppers, pipes and gears may sit inside the ring without breaking validation. The pack keeps the default tolerance of 2 blocks, set by horse_path.pathObstructionTolerance.[11][15]

    Path speed

Each unique floor block under the path contributes a multiplier, and the worker's speed is the average of them. That speed directly scales how fast recipes run. The pack uses the mod defaults in horse_path.pathSpeedEntries: grass block, dirt, coarse dirt and rooted dirt run at 0.5x, dirt paths at 1.0x, and packed ice at 2.0x. Any other block uses horse_path.pathSpeedDefault, which is 1.[11][15]

Tip: The multiplier is recomputed roughly every 11 seconds, so you can swap the floor under a running worker without re-attaching the horse. Packed ice doubles the speed, and a plain dirt or grass floor halves it.[11][15]

    Manual stations

The Hand Grindstone is the early-game way to grind. Insert an item, then right-click with an empty hand to turn it. The grindstone processes the item over several turns, and you collect the output from its right side. Sneak + right-click pulls un-milled input back out. Each turn gives general.pointsPerRotation points, which is 2 in this pack.[9][11]

The Chopping Block works with a placed item and an axe. The Granite Anvil works the same way with a stone-tier or better pickaxe. A wooden pickaxe is not strong enough. Manual chopping takes more strikes than horse chopping, and the pack sets general.choppingMultiplier to 4. The anvil's crushing time uses general.crushingMultiplier, also 4.[3][11][12]

    Horse Chopper and Horse Grindstone

Both machines take items by right-click, process them automatically and give output by right-click. The chopper is two blocks tall and needs no axe. For hoppers, the chopper accepts items from the top or sides and gives finished items out the bottom. The chopper uses general.pointsForWindup points (8 in this pack) for its windup and chop.[11][13][14]

    Horse Press and fluids

The Horse Press is two blocks tall and has an internal fluid tank. Pressing seeds produces Seed Oil, and other recipes can consume a fluid instead. A full press takes general.pointsForPress points (16 in this pack). The tank holds 3,000 mB in this pack, set by general.pressFluidTankSize.[10][11][16]

    • Right-click with a filled bucket to fill the tank, or an empty bucket to drain it.[16]
    • You can connect a fluid pipe or tank for automated transfer. The press has separate input and output tanks, so pipes can feed one fluid in and drain another without contamination.[1][16]
    • Glass bottles cannot take fluid from a tank on their own, so the press uses a bottling recipe list. Right-click with the container to drain that recipe's fluid and get the filled item back. Right-click with the filled item to reverse it.[16]
    • One bottling recipe ships by default: a glass bottle takes 250 mB of water and becomes a water bottle. Press ice, snow or dripstone first to get the water.[16]

      Generator

The Horse Powered Generator turns worker labor into Forge Energy. It only runs while it has a redstone signal and its buffer is below capacity. The redstone torch on top lights red while it produces power. Connect any side, top or bottom to an FE-compatible cable or machine to extract power. The buffer holds 100,000 FE and pushes to adjacent FE consumers, and mining the generator keeps its stored charge.[1][17]

      Passive blocks and hopper automation

The Drying Rack needs no power, fuel or worker. It holds 8 items, and each slot ticks its own timer, so you can load it one slot at a time. Hoppers and pipes work from any side. Insertion accepts only items with a drying recipe, one per empty slot. Extraction gives only finished items, so partial dries are protected.[1][4]

The Animal Trap holds a caught animal as stored NBT and rolls its death loot every 2.5 minutes into five output slots. Once the trap's minimum time has passed, it has a 5% chance per second to capture the target. Bait is consumed on capture. Each drop cycle then has a small chance to use one bait, and the drop timer pauses while the bait slot is empty.[6]

      • Hoppers feeding the trap can only insert valid bait into the bait slot.[6]
      • Hoppers below the trap pull only from the five drop slots. The bait slot is extraction-locked.[6]
      • If the output slots fill up, the next roll's items pop out on top of the trap.[6]
      • Recipes with a biome or waterlog requirement only count rolls when the condition is met. Jade shows Wrong biome or Needs water when bait is loaded but the conditions are not satisfied.[6][20]

The Wooden Hopper is a single-slot early-game hopper. It runs at half the speed of a vanilla hopper and has the same insertion and extraction behavior.[1]

How do you progress through Horse Powered?

      3 parts

Horse Powered does not have a formal tier ladder in the pack's data. What the sources do show is a natural progression by how the work gets done: first you do it by hand, then you set up stations that run passively, then you put a worker animal on the job. Here is the path, stage by stage.[4][9][18]

Unverified The sources here show no quest chapter covering Horse Powered, so the order below follows the mod's in-game guide and the in-pack recipes, not a quest path. Check the pack's quest book in game to see whether it mentions the mod. This site does hold FTB Evolution 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

      Stage 1: hand-powered stations

The Hand Grindstone is described as a great early-game option before you have horses for automation. You place it, insert an item, then right-click with an empty hand to turn it over several turns.[9]

The Chopping Block is a manual station for chopping logs and other items with an axe. You put the item on the block, strike it with an axe, then collect the output. Axes may take durability damage, and every strike costs a little hunger. Both are configurable.[3]

The Animal Trap lures and captures passive animals with bait, then produces that animal's normal drops every 2.5 minutes into its own inventory. Stage 3: putting animals to work

The horse-driven machines are the Horse Chopper, the Horse Grindstone and the Horse Press. The animals that count as valid workers are horses, donkeys, mules, llamas and trader llamas.[10][18]

The Horse Chopper uses the same recipes as the Chopping Block unless a recipe is tagged horse-only, and it ignores the extra hunger cost that some recipes add, since you are no longer the one swinging the axe. The Chopping Block also takes more strikes per recipe than horse chopping, by a configurable multiplier.[3]

Which Horse Powered config options matter?

          3 parts

Good news for planning: every option in Horse Powered's config that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default in this pack, so none of those values has been rebalanced. All of it lives in config/horsepowered-common.toml.[11]

          Horse path and floor speed

This is the group you will probably touch first. The speed of a worker's circular path depends on the floor blocks under it. The final path speed is the average of the multipliers of every unique floor block the path crosses. Values below 1.0 slow the worker and values above 1.0 speed it up.[11]

          • horse_path.pathSpeedEntries sets per-block multipliers in this pack: grass block, dirt, coarse dirt and rooted dirt are all 0.5, Dirt Path is 1.0 and Packed Ice is 2.0. Any block listed here also counts as valid floor, even if its top is not a full block, like dirt paths.[11]
          • horse_path.pathSpeedDefault is 1, the multiplier for any floor block not in that list. This matches the mod default.[11]
          • horse_path.pathObstructionTolerance is 2, which is the mod default. It is how many non-replaceable blocks (chests, hoppers, gears and so on) are tolerated in the horse's 7x7 working ring before validation fails. Levers are always allowed.[11]
Tip: Dirt and grass are listed at 0.5, so a path over dirt path (1.0) or packed ice (2.0) is quicker. Mixing floor types averages their multipliers, so one ice block in a dirt ring will not give you full ice speed.[11]

          Timing and capacity

What changed in Horse Powered between versions?

          1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Horse Powered 3.11.5. The pack's mod list shows it was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier, so you will not see a version jump from this mod when you update to 1.1.0.[2]

          3.11.5

This release is mostly fixes: the Creative Battery and worker leads get repaired, and flour and dough get common tags.[21]

          • Flour is now tagged c:flours and c:flours/wheat, and Dough is tagged c:doughs and c:doughs/wheat. That lets other mods' recipes and Almost Unified treat them like Create's flour.[21]
          • The Creative Battery now supplies unlimited power to adjacent blocks and to anything that pulls energy from it. Before this fix it started empty and never output anything.[21]
          • Workers led with a lead through the valid_worker tag can now be tied to fence posts, moved onto an existing lead knot, and taken back from one, the same as normal leashable animals.[21]

Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for Horse Powered, so any changes to it between FTB Evolution 2 releases are not shown. Check the pack's own changelogs for those.

          horse_path.pathSpeedEntries
Per-block speed multipliers for the floor blocks under the horse's circular path. Format: "namespace:block_id=multiplier". Multipliers below 1.0 slow the worker, above 1.0 speed it up. The final path speed is the average of the multipliers of every unique floor block the path crosses. Any block listed here also counts as valid floor, even if its top is not a full block (such as dirt paths).
