What is Sawmill?
1 part
Sawmill does one job and does it well: it adds a single crafting station, the Saw, that lets you craft wooden items. There's no pile of extra wooden blocks added to your world, just the station itself.[1]
The big selling point is compatibility. Sawmill recipes are designed to work with any mod automatically, so you can make any wood-derived block from them. In a pack as big as this one, with loads of mods adding their own woods, that means one place to go for your planks, stairs, slabs and other wooden pieces.[1]
The mod also ties into villages. Carpenter villagers can work at a Sawmill and offer you some useful trades, and the Carpenter comes with 5 unique houses that can spawn in your villages. The station even has its own sawing sounds.[1]
If you're tweaking the pack yourself, Sawmill supports KubeJS so you can add extra recipes, and datapacks work for this too. Villager trades are data driven as well.[1]
Sawmill in All the Mods 10
All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Sawmill version 1.21-1.5.21, and the mod has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]
Sawmill shows up in the Tips and Tricks quest chapter. Quest a quest in "?" asks for one of several workstation items, and the Saw is one of the accepted options, so crafting one is an easy way to tick that quest off. That quest unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[3]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack changes the Sawmill's crafting recipe, adds custom Sawmill recipes, or adjusts the Carpenter's trades, so check in-game before relying on mod defaults.
How do you get started with Sawmill?
3 parts
Sawmill is a one-block mod: it adds a single crafting station, the Saw, that lets you craft wooden items. It doesn't add piles of new wooden blocks, so your first job is to build the station itself.[1]
Step 1: Craft the Saw
Craft the Saw first, because everything else in this mod runs through it. This pack changed the Saw's recipe, so ignore any recipe you remember from other packs or videos. The block below shows the recipe this pack actually uses.[1][4]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden fence | any iron ingot | any wooden fence |
| any wooden slab | any wooden slab | any wooden slab |
Recipe id: sawmill:sawmill
This pack's recipe, which differs from the mod's default.
Step 2: Place it and start sawing
Once your Saw is down, use it to craft wood-derived blocks. Its recipes are built to work with any mod automatically, so the wood types that other mods add are covered too. It also plays its own sawing sounds while you work.[1]
Unverified The exact interface of the Saw, the number of items you get per log, and which specific blocks you can make in this pack can't be confirmed from the available sources. Check the recipe viewer in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Step 3: Keep an eye out for Carpenters
The mod adds a Carpenter villager who can use the Sawmill as a workstation and offers trades. Carpenters come with 5 unique house designs that can spawn in villages, so a sawmill building in a village is a good sign you've found one.[1]
Unverified What the Carpenter's trades are in this pack, and whether placing a Saw near an unemployed villager turns it into a Carpenter, can't be confirmed from the available sources.
How does Sawmill work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.1 guide
Sawmill keeps things simple: it adds one crafting station, the Saw, and routes wooden item crafting through it. You don't get a pile of new wooden blocks. The mod gives you one workstation that lets you craft wood-derived blocks in one place.[1]
Building the Saw
The Saw is a normal shaped crafting recipe, but All the Mods 10 has changed it from the mod's own version. If you've built one in another pack, check the recipe below before gathering materials.[5]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden fence | any iron ingot | any wooden fence |
| any wooden slab | any wooden slab | any wooden slab |
Recipe id: sawmill:sawmill
This recipe is modified by All the Mods 10 7.1.
How the Sawmill recipes work
The mod's big selling point is that Sawmill recipes are meant to work with any mod, so you can craft any wood-derived block from any wood type at the station. The workstation also plays its own sawing sounds while you use it.[1]
There is a catch in this pack. The option general.dynamic_recipes controls whether Sawmill generates its recipes dynamically, and All the Mods 10 7.1 sets it to false. The config describes turning this off as the route for pack makers who add the recipes manually instead, which can also speed up boot time slightly.[6]
Unverified The sources don't say which Sawmill recipes All the Mods 10 7.1 ships in place of the dynamically generated ones. They also don't say whether every modded wood type is covered in this pack. If a wooden block doesn't show up at the Saw, it may simply not have a recipe here.
Two other options are also off in this pack. general.save_recipes would save the Sawmill recipes to disk. It exists as a tool for modpack authors, so as a player you can ignore it. general.sort_recipes would sort recipes by creative tab order. Its own description warns that this can cause issues if the creative tab order differs between server and client, and that it doesn't work on NeoForge servers.[6]
Carpenter villagers
The Sawmill also works as a villager job site. A Carpenter villager can work at a Sawmill and offers some useful trades. Carpenters have 5 unique houses that can spawn in villages, so you might find one already set up with its workstation.[1]
The Carpenter's trades are data driven through the Moonlight villager trade system, so they can be changed with data rather than code.[1]
Unverified The sources don't list the Carpenter's trades or say whether All the Mods 10 7.1 changes them.
Adding recipes with KubeJS or datapacks
If you run your own server or tweak the pack, you can add extra Sawmill recipes. The mod has KubeJS integration, and you can use datapacks as well.[1]
Power and automation
Unverified The sources don't cover whether the Sawmill needs power, whether it has an inventory, or whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can insert and extract items. Treat it as a manual crafting station until you've tested it in game.
How do you progress through Sawmill?
2 parts
Progression for this mod in the pack is short: it adds a single block, the Saw, and there's no chain of upgrades to work through. Once you have one, you're set.[4]
Crafting the Saw
The Saw uses a shaped crafting table recipe that this pack has changed from the mod's default, so check the in-pack version below instead of relying on an older video or another pack. It uses iron ingots plus some basic wooden parts, so you can make it very early.[4]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden fence | any iron ingot | any wooden fence |
| any wooden slab | any wooden slab | any wooden slab |
Recipe id: sawmill:sawmill
This is the pack's modified recipe.
Where it shows up in the quests
The Saw appears in the tips and tricks chapter, in the untitled quest a quest in "?". That quest accepts any one of several workstation-style items, and the Saw is one of the valid options. If you craft a Saw, you can use it to complete the quest without building any of the other listed blocks.[3]
Unverified The sources don't show any tiers, upgrades or later quests for this mod in the pack, so no further progression steps can be confirmed here.
How does Sawmill work with other mods?
3 parts
The Saw isn't just a standalone workstation in this pack. It also shows up as a crafting component and as a quest item, so it's worth knowing where it plugs into other mods.[3][4]
Sawmill Upgrades for backpacks and storage
The biggest link is the Sawmill Upgrade, and it comes in two versions. You craft each one using the Saw itself, so you'll need a Saw on hand before you can make either upgrade.[4]
- The backpack version, Sawmill Upgrade, is built on the backpack Upgrade Base.[4]
- The storage version, Sawmill Upgrade, is built on the storage Upgrade Base.[4]
The two recipes are shaped crafting recipes and follow the same pattern. The only difference is which Upgrade Base you use, so make sure you grab the right base for the upgrade you want.[4]

Unverified The sources only show how these upgrades are crafted. What the Sawmill Upgrade does once it's installed in a backpack or storage block isn't confirmed here.
Tips and tricks quest
The Saw also counts for a quest in "?" in the tips and tricks chapter. That quest accepts any one of a long list of workstations from different mods, such as the Charger or the Engineer's Workbench, and the Saw is one of the accepted options. If you've already built a Saw, you can hand it in there.[3]
Works with wood from any mod
On top of the direct recipe links, the mod is designed to be compatible with other mods automatically. Its recipes are meant to let you craft any wood-derived block, including ones added by other mods, without extra setup.[1]
The mod also supports KubeJS and datapacks for adding extra recipes, and its Carpenter villager trades are data driven through the Moonlight villager trade system.[1]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sawmill?
2 parts
The Saw appears in only one quest in this pack: a quest in "?", an untitled quest in the tips_and_tricks chapter. It isn't part of a longer questline for the mod, so this section is short.[3]
What the quest asks for
The quest has a single item task, and a Saw is one of many accepted items. Any one item from the list completes it. The other options come from a range of mods, including Modern Industrialization, AE2, Actually Additions, Ars Nouveau, Railcraft, Immersive Engineering and PneumaticCraft, plus a vanilla white banner. If you already have a Saw, you can hand that in.[3]
When it unlocks
The quest isn't available straight away. It sits after one earlier quest in the tips_and_tricks chapter, so you need to finish that one first before this quest opens up.[3]
Unverified The quest has no title in the quest file, so it's unclear what tip it teaches about these items or what reward it gives. Check the quest in-game to see its description and rewards.
Which Sawmill config options matter?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.1 guide
Sawmill keeps its settings in one small common config file with three options. All three are switched off in this pack. None of them change how you use the Sawmill day to day, but one of them decides where the Sawmill's recipes come from, so it's worth a quick look.[6]
Dynamic recipe generation
general.dynamic_recipes controls whether Sawmill generates its recipes dynamically. This pack sets it to false, so Sawmill recipes are not generated on the fly here. The config describes this as the option to turn off if all the recipes are going to be added manually instead, and notes that turning it off can speed up boot time slightly.[6]
This matters because the mod's big selling point is that its recipes work with any mod automatically, letting you craft any wood-derived block at the Sawmill. With dynamic generation off in this pack, what you can make at the Sawmill depends on whatever recipes are actually loaded, not on automatic generation.[1][6]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack ships its own pre-made Sawmill recipes to replace the dynamic ones, or which wooden blocks from other mods have Sawmill recipes in this pack. They also don't show the mod's default value for this option, so it's unconfirmed whether the pack changed it. If a wooden block you expected is missing from the Sawmill, check a recipe viewer in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Saving recipes to disk
general.save_recipes is set to false in this pack. It's a tool for modpack authors. You turn off dynamic generation, turn this on, boot the game, and then copy the generated recipes from the generated folder into your own datapack. After that you turn the option off again. As a player you can leave it alone.[6]
Recipe sorting
general.sort_recipes sorts Sawmill recipes to follow the creative tab order. This pack keeps it set to false. That's a sensible choice for multiplayer. The config warns that sorting could cause issues if the creative order differs between server and client, and says NeoForge has a bug where it won't work on servers.[6]
What changed in Sawmill between versions?
1 part
Sawmill (listed in the pack changelogs as Universal Sawmill) has been in All the Mods 10 since version 2.2 or earlier. The current 4.5 release ships version 1.21-1.5.21, as the NeoForge jar sawmill-1.21-1.5.21-neoforge.jar.[2]
Updates across pack releases
Here are the pack releases that bumped the mod, newest first:[7][8][9][10]
- All the Mods 10 4.5: updated from 1.21-1.5.18 to 1.21-1.5.21.[7]
- All the Mods 10 2.43: updated from 1.21-1.5.17 to 1.21-1.5.18.[8]
- All the Mods 10 2.42: updated from 1.21-1.5.14 to 1.21-1.5.17.[9]
- All the Mods 10 2.29: updated from 1.21-1.5.13 to 1.21-1.5.14.[10]
Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version numbers. What each Sawmill update actually changed (fixes, features, recipe or balance tweaks) can't be confirmed here, because no changelogs are stored for the shipped jars.
