What is Sawmill?

3 parts

Sawmill is a woodworking mod with one job: it adds a Sawmill crafting station that lets you craft wooden items. Its recipes are built to work with any mod, so wood-derived blocks from other mods can be crafted there too, without extra wooden block clutter.[1]

What it adds

  • The Sawmill workstation, which crafts any wood-derivative block and has its own sawing sounds.[1]
  • Carpenter villagers, who work at a Sawmill and offer some useful trades.[1]
  • 5 unique Carpenter houses that can spawn in villages, so the station fits into the world instead of feeling bolted on.[1]
  • Data-driven villager trades through the Moonlight villager trade system.[1]
  • KubeJS integration for adding extra recipes. Datapacks work too.[1]

Who it is for

If you build a lot, or you have many mods that each add their own planks, stairs, slabs and other wood blocks, this is a handy single station for turning wood into those pieces. It also suits pack tweakers, since you can add recipes with KubeJS or a datapack.[1]

In this pack

This pack includes Sawmill 1.21-1.8.1, using the NeoForge build of the mod.[2]

Unverified The sources I have don't show where Sawmill fits into the pack's progression, whether it is on the ATM Star path, or whether any quests involve it. I also couldn't confirm whether the pack changes any of its recipes or configs, so treat those details as unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Sawmill?

3 parts

Good news: this mod keeps things simple. It adds one crafting station, the Sawmill, which lets you craft wooden items. The pack's recipe dump lists a single recipe that makes a Sawmill item, the Saw, so your first step is making that.[1][3]

First, craft the Saw

The pack changed this recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The block below shows the exact in-pack version.[3]

This is the pack's changed version of the recipe, not the mod default.

Then put it to work

Once you have a Sawmill, you can use it to craft wood items. The mod's project page says its recipes are compatible with any mod and can craft any wood-derived block, so wooden blocks from other mods should be craftable there too. It also adds no extra wooden block spam, so the Sawmill is the only new thing to learn.[1]

Finally, look for a Carpenter

  • Carpenter villagers can work at a Sawmill and offer some useful trades.[1]
  • The mod adds 5 unique Carpenter houses that can spawn in villages, so keep an eye out when you explore.[1]
  • The Sawmill has its own sawing sounds, so you will hear when it is working.[1]
Tip: The mod supports KubeJS and datapacks for adding extra recipes, and its villager trades are data driven through the Moonlight villager trade system.[1]

How does Sawmill work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.4 guide

Sawmill keeps things refreshingly simple: it adds one new crafting station, the Saw, and that single block is your go-to spot for crafting wooden items. There's no pile of extra machines or tiers to learn. You place the station, feed it wood, and pick the wooden block you want.[1]

Getting the station

Heads up if you've used this mod before: this pack changed the station's crafting recipe, so don't rely on the default recipe you might remember. The block below shows the exact recipe as it works in this pack.[4]

How the recipes work

The big selling point is that Sawmill recipes are compatible with any mod automatically. Any wood-derived block from any mod can be crafted at the station, without someone writing a recipe for each one by hand. That makes it really handy in a big modpack full of wood types and wooden decorations.[1]

The mod also avoids cluttering your world and your recipe viewer. It doesn't add a heap of new wooden blocks of its own: the only thing it adds is the Sawmill itself, which works with the wooden blocks that already exist.[1]

If a pack maker wants extra recipes, the mod supports KubeJS integration, and datapacks work as well. Keep in mind that this only describes what the mod supports. It doesn't tell you whether this pack actually adds any custom Sawmill recipes.[1]

Carpenter villagers

The Sawmill is also a villager workstation. Carpenter villagers can work at a Sawmill and offer you some useful trades. Their trades are data driven through the Moonlight villager trade system.[1]

You don't always have to build a Sawmill yourself to meet a Carpenter. The Carpenter comes with 5 unique houses that can spawn in your villages, so keep an eye out for them while you explore.[1]

Tip: Can't tell whether a block is a Sawmill? Listen for it. The workstation has its own sawing sounds, so you can often hear one before you spot it.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't explain whether the Sawmill needs power, how many items each log or plank turns into, or whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can insert and extract items. Test this in-game before you design any automated wood setup around it.

How do you progress through Sawmill?

The recipe data for this pack lists a single Sawmill item, the Saw, so there is no tier ladder to climb. It is made with a shaped crafting recipe.[3]

The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so the recipe below is the one that applies here, not the one you may remember from elsewhere.[3]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quests, quest chapters or progression gates for this mod, so I can't describe a quest-driven path or upgrade tiers. If you find a quest that involves the Saw, check it in the pack's quest book.

How does Sawmill work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, the in-pack link between Sawmill and other mods is the Sawmill Upgrade for Sophisticated Backpacks and for Sophisticated Storage. Each upgrade connects the Saw to its Sophisticated mod.[3]

Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage

The pack changed both of these recipes, so don't assume they match what you remember from other packs. The recipe blocks below show what applies here.[3]

First up is the Sawmill Upgrade for backpacks. It is a shaped crafting recipe.[3]

Tip: The backpack and storage upgrades each use their own Upgrade Base item, so craft the one that matches the mod you want to upgrade.[3]

Wider compatibility

The mod's project page says its Sawmill recipes are compatible with any mod and can craft any wood-derived block. It also mentions KubeJS integration for adding extra recipes, and says datapacks work too.[1]

Which All the Mons quests use Sawmill?

2 parts

Quick heads up: none of the quest tasks I can see ask for an item from this mod's own namespace. The quests that deal with sawing ask for machines from other mods, and the quest book lets you pick any of them. Sawing is still a real step in this pack's progression, and it shows up in two chapters.[5][6]

Mekanism chapter (Tech group)

This is chapter 50 of 70 in the book and has 89 quests. 37 of them aren't shown here, so check the quest book for those. The sawing one is "Precision Sawmill" quest, which asks for Precision Sawmill and comes after "Machines" quest. The quest says to give it energy and throw in a wood item. It turns logs into 6 planks instead of 4, and sticks into sawdust.[6]

Next in line is "Cardboard Box" quest, which comes after the sawmill quest. It uses the sawdust the sawmill makes from sticks.[6]

Master Ball chapter (Cobblemon group)

This is chapter 13 of 70 and has 50 quests. Here you cut apricorns and lids in half or into bits. Several quests accept any of the same machines: Mechanical Saw, the Cut glyph (Glyph Cut), Precision Sawmill, the Oritech Fragment Forge (Fragment Forge) or the PneumaticCraft Assembly Controller (Assembly Controller). One later variant swaps the Fragment Forge for the Oritech Atomic Forge.[5]

Here is the order for the regular apricorn route:[5]

  1. "Creating Pokeballs" quest asks for Andesite Alloy, the start of the chapter's Create route.[5]
  2. a quest in "Master Ball" is the first cutting quest. It comes after the Creating Pokeballs quest.[5]
  3. "Half Apricorns" quest asks for the half apricorns.[5]
  4. "Bulk Washing" quest and then "Ball Lids" quest cover washing the halves and getting the ball lids.[5]
  5. "Sawing (again)" quest comes after Ball Lids. It has you saw lids to get apricorn bits.[5]
  6. "Apricorn Bits" quest follows it and asks for the bits.[5]

The metal apricorn route is a separate chain. "Allthemodium Metal Apricorns" quest comes first. Then a cutting quest, a quest in "Master Ball", leads to "Half Allthemodium Metal Apricorns" quest. After that comes the atomic forge variant, a quest in "Master Ball". "Allthemodium Metal Apricorn Bits" quest asks for the finished bits, and a quest in "Master Ball" picks up from there.[5]

Tip: Any of the listed machines completes the cutting quests, so use whichever you already have. The Precision Sawmill from the Mekanism chapter is on that list.[5]

Which Sawmill config options matter?

4 parts

Most of Sawmill's config is easy to read. The file only prints a mod default next to a few options: general.carpenter_house_spawn_rate, general.max_discount and general.search_bar_threshold. The pack leaves each of those at the default.[7]

What you can craft

Blacklist and Create

general.mods_blacklist is set to the framedblocks mod id, so all recipes from that mod are ignored by the Sawmill. The file suggests this option for mods with many recipes, because the Sawmill can display at most 255 at once. For finer control it also points to the sawmill:blacklist item tag.[7]

Watch out: general.create_saw_compat is false, which is off by default. The file explains why: Create's Mechanical Saw picks a random matching recipe, so a log could come out as any Sawmill output.[7]

Villages and structures

general.carpenter_house_spawn_rate is 1, the mod default (range 0.0 to 16.0). It multiplies the spawn weight of carpenter houses in villages, so higher values make them more common and 0 stops them generating altogether. It does not affect Repurposed Structures villages, which need a datapack instead. general.repurposed_structures_compat is true, so the compat structures for Repurposed Structures are enabled.[7]

Interface settings

  • general.search_bar_mode is AUTOMATIC. The search bar only appears statically once enough mods add wood recipes. The other modes are OFF, ON and DYNAMIC.[7]
  • general.search_bar_threshold is 32, the mod default. It sets how many recipes it takes for the search bar to appear.[7]
  • general.wider_gui is false. Turning it on makes the Sawmill GUI slightly wider.[7]
  • general.sort_recipes is false. Turning it on sorts recipes in creative tab order, but the file warns this can cause issues if the creative order differs between server and client. It also notes a NeoForge bug where this doesn't work on servers.[7]
Tip: general.recipe_generation_mode is CACHED, so the dynamic assets go into a cache folder that regenerates whenever any mod or pack changes. The other modes are NEVER, CACHED_ZIPPED and ALWAYS.[7]

What changed in Sawmill between versions?

1 part

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Sawmill 1.21-1.8.1. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[2]

Mod releases

  • 1.21-1.7.1: added more logs and removed some others for debug purposes.[8]
  • 1.21-1.7.7: more fixes. The changelog doesn't say which ones.[9]
  • 1.21-1.8.0: a new config screen, plus some fixes with trades.[10]
  • 1.21-1.8.1: added some compatibility with the Create saw. The changelog calls it experimental and says it is off by default. This is the version in the pack.[2][11]
Tip: The Create saw compatibility is described as experimental and off by default in the mod's changelog. If you want to try it, look for it in the new config screen added in 1.21-1.8.0.[10][11]
