What is Sawmill?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Sawmill does one job: it adds the Saw crafting station, which lets you craft wooden items. The recipes work with wood-derived blocks from any mod, so you don't need a different wood workstation for every mod in the pack. It also doesn't add a pile of extra wooden blocks of its own.[1]
The pack includes Sawmill 1.21-1.8.0 for NeoForge. The sources don't show the pack changing any of its recipes or values, so you should expect the mod's normal behavior.[2]
Who it's for
It's for builders and base designers who work with a lot of wood types and want one station to turn them into other wooden blocks. It also suits anyone exploring villages, since the station ties into the villager system.[1]
What it adds
- A Sawmill crafting station with its own sawing sounds.[1]
- Carpenter villagers, who work at a Sawmill and offer some useful trades. The trades are data-driven through Moonlight's villager trade system.[1]
- 5 unique Carpenter houses that can spawn in your villages.[1]
- KubeJS integration if you want to add extra recipes. Datapacks work for this too.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
Sawmill isn't a progression gate. You'll meet it in the Tips and Tricks chapter, in the quest "Mo' Professions" quest, which comes after the Easy Villagers quest. That quest is about the new villager professions modded Minecraft adds, and the Saw is listed as the workstation for the Carpenter.[3]
How do you get started with Sawmill?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Sawmill is a small mod with one thing to craft: the Saw. It's a crafting station for wooden items, and its recipes work with wooden blocks from other mods automatically. You don't need a separate wood-cutting setup for each mod in the pack.[1]
First, craft the Saw
The Saw is the first thing to make. The pack changed its recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's default. Here's the exact in-pack version:[4]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden fence | any iron ingot | any wooden fence |
| any wooden slab | any wooden slab | any wooden slab |
Recipe id: sawmill:sawmill
This is the pack's changed version of the Saw recipe.
Next, use it for your wood
With a Saw placed, you have a Sawmill crafting station for turning wood into other wooden items. The mod says its recipes are compatible with any mod and can craft any wood-derivative block. When a build needs lots of wooden pieces from different mods, this is a good place to look first.[1]
Then, get a Carpenter villager
The Saw is also a villager workstation. Carpenter villagers can work at a Sawmill and offer useful trades. The mod also adds 5 unique Carpenter houses that can spawn in villages, so you may meet a Carpenter before you craft anything.[1]
The pack's quest book covers this too. The quest "Mo' Professions" quest in the Tips and Tricks chapter comes after Easy Villagers. It lists the Saw among the workstations that give villagers a new profession, and it names the Saw's profession as Carpenter.[3]
How does Sawmill work?
5 parts
Sawmill keeps things simple: it adds one crafting station, the Saw, and routes wooden item crafting through it. You don't get a pile of new wooden blocks. The mod gives you one workstation that lets you craft wood-derived blocks in one place.[1]
Building the Saw
The Saw is a normal shaped crafting recipe, but All the Mods 10 has changed it from the mod's own version. If you've built one in another pack, check the recipe below before gathering materials.[5]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden fence | any iron ingot | any wooden fence |
| any wooden slab | any wooden slab | any wooden slab |
Recipe id: sawmill:sawmill
This recipe is modified by All the Mods 10 7.1.
How the Sawmill recipes work
The mod's big selling point is that Sawmill recipes are meant to work with any mod, so you can craft any wood-derived block from any wood type at the station. The workstation also plays its own sawing sounds while you use it.[1]
There is a catch in this pack. The option general.dynamic_recipes controls whether Sawmill generates its recipes dynamically, and All the Mods 10 7.1 sets it to false. The config describes turning this off as the route for pack makers who add the recipes manually instead, which can also speed up boot time slightly.[6]
Unverified The sources don't say which Sawmill recipes All the Mods 10 7.1 ships in place of the dynamically generated ones. They also don't say whether every modded wood type is covered in this pack. If a wooden block doesn't show up at the Saw, it may simply not have a recipe here.
Two other options are also off in this pack. general.save_recipes would save the Sawmill recipes to disk. It exists as a tool for modpack authors, so as a player you can ignore it. general.sort_recipes would sort recipes by creative tab order. Its own description warns that this can cause issues if the creative tab order differs between server and client, and that it doesn't work on NeoForge servers.[6]
Carpenter villagers
The Sawmill also works as a villager job site. A Carpenter villager can work at a Sawmill and offers some useful trades. Carpenters have 5 unique houses that can spawn in villages, so you might find one already set up with its workstation.[1]
The Carpenter's trades are data driven through the Moonlight villager trade system, so they can be changed with data rather than code.[1]
Unverified The sources don't list the Carpenter's trades or say whether All the Mods 10 7.1 changes them.
Adding recipes with KubeJS or datapacks
If you run your own server or tweak the pack, you can add extra Sawmill recipes. The mod has KubeJS integration, and you can use datapacks as well.[1]
Power and automation
Unverified The sources don't cover whether the Sawmill needs power, whether it has an inventory, or whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can insert and extract items. Treat it as a manual crafting station until you've tested it in game.
How do you progress through Sawmill?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
In this pack the sources show one thing for Sawmill: the Saw (the Saw) and how you get it. There is no tier breakdown to follow, so this section covers the Saw recipe and the quest that mentions it.[4]
Crafting the Saw
The pack changes the recipe for the Saw, so don't assume it matches the mod's defaults. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[4]
Crafting Shaped
| any wooden fence | any iron ingot | any wooden fence |
| any wooden slab | any wooden slab | any wooden slab |
Recipe id: sawmill:sawmill
This is the pack's modified recipe for the Saw.
The quest that mentions it
The Saw shows up in the Tips and Tricks chapter, in the quest "Mo' Professions" quest. It comes after the Easy Villagers quest, so finish that one first.[3]
The quest is about the new villager professions that mods add. Its task accepts any one of many workstation items, and the Saw is one of them. The quest text lists the Saw as the workstation for the Carpenter profession.[3]
How does Sawmill work with other mods?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
The Saw is built to work with wooden blocks from any mod. Its recipes are described as compatible with any mod and can craft any wood-derived block, so it connects with the rest of the pack without extra setup. Beyond that, the pack has a few direct links you can use.[1]
Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage
The clearest link is the Sawmill Upgrade for backpacks and the Sawmill Upgrade for storage blocks. The pack changed both recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the mods' defaults.[4]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | Empty slot | |
| any iron ingot | any iron ingot | |
| Empty slot | any redstone dust | Empty slot |
Recipe id: sophisticatedbackpacks:sawmill/sawmill_upgrade
Backpack version, as changed by the pack.
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | Empty slot | |
| any iron ingot | any iron ingot | |
| Empty slot | any redstone dust | Empty slot |
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:sawmill/sawmill_upgrade
Storage version, as changed by the pack.
Each one uses the Upgrade Base from its own mod: Upgrade Base for backpacks and Upgrade Base for storage.[4]
Villager professions quest
The Saw also shows up in the quest "Mo' Professions" quest, in the Tips and Tricks chapter, which comes after the Easy Villagers quest. The quest is about modded villager professions, and its text lists the Saw as the workstation for the Carpenter. The task accepts any one of the listed workstations from several mods, so the Saw is just one of many ways to complete it.[3]
The mod page says the Carpenter villager works at a Sawmill and offers trades. The mod also adds 5 unique Carpenter houses that can spawn in villages.[1]
Adding your own recipes
The mod page says it has KubeJS integration for adding extra recipes, and datapacks work too.[1]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sawmill?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
The Saw (Saw) shows up in just one quest in the pack. It's in the "Tips and Tricks" chapter, so there's no dedicated Sawmill chapter and no long questline to follow.[3]
Mo' Professions
The quest is "Mo' Professions" quest. It comes after the Easy Villagers quest in the same chapter, so that's the one to finish first.[3]
The quest is about the new villager professions that modded Minecraft adds. Its task is a list of items joined by "or", and the Saw is one of the options alongside blocks from other mods, such as the Forge Hammer, the Charger, the Arcane Core and the Charging Station. The list also includes a plain white banner.[3]
The quest text pairs each of these blocks with the profession it gives a villager. For the Saw, that profession is Carpenter.[3]
Which Sawmill config options matter?
3 parts
Sawmill keeps its settings in one small common config file with three options. All three are switched off in this pack. None of them change how you use the Sawmill day to day, but one of them decides where the Sawmill's recipes come from, so it's worth a quick look.[6]
Dynamic recipe generation
general.dynamic_recipes controls whether Sawmill generates its recipes dynamically. This pack sets it to false, so Sawmill recipes are not generated on the fly here. The config describes this as the option to turn off if all the recipes are going to be added manually instead, and notes that turning it off can speed up boot time slightly.[6]
This matters because the mod's big selling point is that its recipes work with any mod automatically, letting you craft any wood-derived block at the Sawmill. With dynamic generation off in this pack, what you can make at the Sawmill depends on whatever recipes are actually loaded, not on automatic generation.[1][6]
Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack ships its own pre-made Sawmill recipes to replace the dynamic ones, or which wooden blocks from other mods have Sawmill recipes in this pack. They also don't show the mod's default value for this option, so it's unconfirmed whether the pack changed it. If a wooden block you expected is missing from the Sawmill, check a recipe viewer in-game. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Saving recipes to disk
general.save_recipes is set to false in this pack. It's a tool for modpack authors. You turn off dynamic generation, turn this on, boot the game, and then copy the generated recipes from the generated folder into your own datapack. After that you turn the option off again. As a player you can leave it alone.[6]
Recipe sorting
general.sort_recipes sorts Sawmill recipes to follow the creative tab order. This pack keeps it set to false. That's a sensible choice for multiplayer. The config warns that sorting could cause issues if the creative order differs between server and client, and says NeoForge has a bug where it won't work on servers.[6]
What changed in Sawmill between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 7.1 ships Sawmill version 1.21-1.7.7, in the file sawmill-neoforge-1.21-1.7.7.jar. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.3 or earlier, so it has been around for most of the pack's life.[7]
The pack changelogs list it as Universal Sawmill. It has been updated fairly regularly, and each step is listed below from newest to oldest.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]
