What is Sophisticated Storage?
This pack ships Sophisticated Storage at version 0.10.26 (file sophisticatedstorage-1.21-0.10.26.816.jar). It has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]
Unverified The sources here include no mod description and no in-jar guidebook for Sophisticated Storage, so what its blocks and upgrades do is not shown in this section. This section also does not place the mod in the pack's quest book, because the quest sources provided give no chapter, group or neighbouring quests for it.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Sophisticated Storage replaces plain chests and barrels with versions you can upgrade over time. Here is the order I'd go in, so you get the most out of your first few crafts.[2][3]
Step one: make a chest or barrel
Start with a Chest or a Barrel. The pack has a separate recipe for each wood type (acacia, bamboo, birch and cherry all show up in the recipe list), so you can match your base's look. Acacia is shown here as an example.[2]

Step two: convert the vanilla storage you already have
Already have vanilla chests full of stuff? The Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version, so you don't have to empty them by hand.[2][3]

Shulker boxes have their own conversion. This recipe turns a vanilla shulker box into a Shulker Box, and the pack also has per-colour versions, such as the black, blue and brown ones.[2]
Step three: work up the tier upgrades
The tier upgrades are named for the material they lead to. Gold, diamond and netherite each use the previous tier's upgrade as an ingredient, so you climb the ladder in order: Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade and Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade first, then Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade and finally Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[2]

The iron step is the one that leads on to gold.
Step four: add useful upgrades
Several upgrades are built on the Upgrade Base. Two examples are the Compression Upgrade, which automatically compresses and decompresses items, and the Blasting Upgrade, which gives you blasting inside an upgrade tab.[2][3]

If you want smelting that runs on its own, the auto versions such as the Auto-smelting Upgrade automatically pull and push items. The Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade are crafted from the auto-smelting one.[2][3]
The stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot, and their tooltips list multipliers from 2 up to 32 across the tiers.[3]
Unverified The recipes for the Upgrade Base and the stack upgrades are not in the sources available for this guide, so check them in-game with your recipe viewer. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Step five: automate with Storage I/O
Once you have several storages touching each other, the Storage I/O lets you pipe items to and from the multiblock. The Storage Input only pipes items in, and the Storage Output only pipes items out. The Storage Input is also described as optimized for low TPS impact.[3]
You can swap between the three with shapeless recipes, so you don't have to commit to one. Input becomes Output, Output becomes I/O, and I/O becomes Input.[2]
How does Sophisticated Storage work?
7 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.50 guide
Sophisticated Storage is less about machines and more about what you bolt onto your storage. There's no power system to deal with. Instead you get multiblock networks, pipe-friendly access blocks and a big pile of upgrades that turn a chest into a small automation hub. Here's how it works in this pack.[3]
Storage multiblocks
A Controller lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. That means one block can act as the front door for a whole wall of chests and barrels.[3]
If you have a separate cluster somewhere else, a Storage Link connects it to the controller. You link it with the Storage Tool, so keep that tool handy.[3]
Input, Output and I/O blocks
- Storage Input lets you pipe items into the multiblock. It's also optimized for low TPS impact.[3]
- Storage Output lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.[3]
- Storage I/O does both, piping items to and from the multiblock.[3]
You don't need to commit to one. Each of the three can be converted into the next with a single-item crafting recipe, so you can swap a block's role without losing it.[4]
Barrels, chests and capacity
Limited barrels come in four versions, Limited Barrel 1 through Limited Barrel 4. Each one's tooltip shows its slot count and a base stack size multiplier, so check it in-game to compare them. The pack has a recipe per wood type, and here's the acacia one as an example.[3][4]

Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot. There are six of them: Tier 1 gives x2, Tier 1 Plus x3, Tier 2 x4, Tier 3 x8, Tier 4 x16 and Tier 5 x32.[3]
The Basic Tier Upgrade turns vanilla inventories into their sophisticated versions. Tier upgrades for copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite also exist, and each has its own recipe in the pack.[3][4]

Shulker boxes get the same treatment. A recipe converts a vanilla shulker box into the Sophisticated Storage version.[4]
Item handling upgrades
Most of the automation lives in upgrades slotted into the storage itself. Many have a basic and an advanced version, and the advanced one mainly adds more filtering options.[3]
- Filter Upgrade filters the items piped in and/or out of the storage.[3]
- Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade is faster and adds input/output options.[3]
- Magnet Upgrade pulls items into the storage from a range. The advanced version has a greater range.[3]
- Pickup Upgrade makes the storage pick up items.[3]
- Void Upgrade voids the items you select in its filter.[3]
- Feeding Upgrade feeds you food from the storage's inventory. The advanced version has more options for when the food is fed.[3]
- Compacting Upgrade compresses items into their compressed variants, but only with 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes and has more filtering. The Compression Upgrade automatically compresses and decompresses items.[3]
Smelting and crafting in an upgrade tab
Some upgrades add a whole workstation as a tab in the storage. Crafting, Stonecutter, Smelting, Smoking and Blasting upgrades work this way, and there are also Chipped upgrades for several Chipped workbenches.[3]
The auto versions are the ones to look at for automation. Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-smoking Upgrade and Auto-blasting Upgrade automatically pull and push items. Smelting handles general smelting, smoking is for food, and blasting is for ores and metal stuff.[3]
In this pack the smoking and blasting versions are crafted from the auto-smelting one.[4]

Fluids and experience
The Pump Upgrade moves fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it lets you filter which fluids get pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and you.[3]
Storage Tool and settings
The Storage Tool links, locks, and hides counts, tiers and locks on storages. Its tooltip says you switch modes with a keybind.[3]
Each storage has its own settings screen. The settings are inherited from the player, or overridden for that specific storage.[3]
Unverified No Sophisticated Storage config files are available for this pack, so I can't confirm any pack-specific values such as slot counts, upgrade slot limits or whether the packing tape setting is changed. Check the in-game tooltips for exact numbers.
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Sophisticated Storage tiers aren't a quest chain here. You progress by crafting tier upgrade items and applying them to your storage. The recipes in this pack show six tiers: Basic, Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite.[2]
Upgrading from Basic
Every upgrade starts from the Basic tier and has its own item: Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade, Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade and Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade. There's also a plain Basic Tier Upgrade.[2]
The upgrades stack up in order. The Copper and Iron ones are crafted straight from the Basic-tier recipes. The Gold upgrade is made from the Iron upgrade, the Diamond upgrade from the Gold one, and the Netherite upgrade from the Diamond one. You can't skip the middle steps if you're going Basic to Netherite.[2]

Upgrading from Copper
If you already have a Copper-tier storage block, you don't have to start over. The pack has Copper-based upgrades for the higher tiers: Copper to Iron Tier Upgrade, Copper to Gold Tier Upgrade, Copper to Diamond Tier Upgrade and Copper to Netherite Tier Upgrade. They follow the same ladder: Iron, then Gold, then Diamond, then Netherite.[2]

Other progression: upgrade chains
Some of the non-tier upgrades also build on each other. The Blasting Upgrade can be made from the Smelting Upgrade, and the Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade can both be made from the Auto-smelting Upgrade.[2]

Unverified No quests in this pack involve Sophisticated Storage, and the mod isn't on the ATM Star quest path, so nothing in the pack tells you when to reach each tier. The sources I had also don't give slot counts for each tier, so check them in-game.
How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
2 parts
Sophisticated Storage connects to two other mods in this pack, going by the in-pack recipes: Sophisticated Backpacks and Chipped. No quests were available as a source for this mod, so everything below comes from recipes.[2]
Sharing upgrades with Sophisticated Backpacks
You don't have to rebuild your upgrades from scratch when you move between a storage block and a backpack. The pack has conversion recipes that turn a Sophisticated Storage upgrade into its Sophisticated Backpacks twin. Take the Magnet Upgrade and you can get the Magnet Upgrade from it.[2]

Storage upgrade to backpack upgrade
The same pattern covers the rest of the upgrade lineup, including the Advanced Filter Upgrade, Crafting Upgrade, Jukebox Upgrade, Smelting Upgrade, Stonecutter Upgrade and Void Upgrade. The Chipped upgrades convert too.[2]
Conversion also works in the other direction. This is the reverse recipe for the magnet upgrade:[2]

Reverse recipes exist for the advanced compacting, feeding, filter, magnet, pickup and void upgrades. They also exist for the blasting, auto-blasting, auto-smelting and auto-smoking upgrades, the plain compacting, crafting, feeding, filter, jukebox, magnet and pickup upgrades, and all the Chipped upgrades.[2]
Unverified The recipe data I was given shows no reverse recipe (backpack to storage) for the Smelting, Smoking, Stonecutter, Void or Stack upgrades. That may just be a gap in the data, so check in game or in the recipe viewer before you count on converting those back. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
Chipped workbench upgrades
Chipped's crafting stations also exist as Sophisticated Storage upgrades, so a storage block can act as the workbench. Each upgrade is crafted from the matching Chipped block plus an Upgrade Base. The pairs are:[2]
- Alchemy Bench gives the Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade.[2]
- Botanist Workbench gives the Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade.[2]
- Carpenters Table gives the Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade.[2]
- Glassblower gives the Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade.[2]
- Loom Table gives the Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade.[2]
- Mason Table gives the Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade.[2]
- Tinkering Table gives the Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade.[2]

The other Chipped upgrades follow the same pattern with their own workbench
Because the Sophisticated Backpacks conversion recipes include the Chipped upgrades, you can carry the same workbench setup in a backpack as well.[2]
