What is Sophisticated Storage?
2 parts
Sophisticated Storage is the chest and barrel mod in this pack. The pack ships version 1.2.4, and it has been in the pack since version 0.49 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the storage setup.[1]
The pack has a dedicated "storage" quest chapter for the mod. It follows the material tiers of the chests and barrels, and it also introduces a few utility items. Each quest asks for either the chest or the barrel version of a tier, so you can pick whichever style you like.[2]
Where it fits in the quest progression
- Start with the Copper Chest or Copper Barrel (a quest in "?").[2]
- Move up to the Iron Chest or Iron Barrel (a quest in "?"), which unlocks after the copper quest.[2]
- Next comes the Gold Chest or Gold Barrel (a quest in "?").[2]
- Then the Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel (a quest in "?").[2]
- The top tier is the Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel (a quest in "?").[2]
The utility items
Alongside the tiers, the chapter has quests for the Upgrade Base (a quest in "?") and the Storage Controller (a quest in "?"). The Storage Tool (a quest in "?") comes after the controller. The Storage Link (a quest in "?") needs both the controller and storage tool quests done first.[2]
Unverified The sources don't describe what the controller, storage tool, storage link or upgrade base do in this pack, or how many slots each tier has. Check those in-game before relying on them.
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Sophisticated Storage gives you chests and barrels that you upgrade through tiers, plus a controller system that ties your storage together. This is the order I'd tackle it in, and it follows the quest chapter for the mod in this pack.[2][3]
Start with a chest or barrel
Begin with a basic Chest or Barrel. Each wood type has its own recipe, and acacia and bamboo are among them. Here is the acacia chest as an example.[3]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:acacia_chest
Other wood types, such as bamboo, have their own chest and barrel recipes in the pack.
If you already have vanilla inventories placed, the Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades them to their sophisticated version, so you don't need to rebuild them.[4]

Climb the tiers
Tier upgrades are crafted from a container plus the matching material. The chain runs from copper to iron to gold to diamond to netherite, for both chests and barrels. The first quest in the chapter asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel, and the iron quest comes right after it.[2][3]

The other tiers follow the same pattern, each built from the previous tier's container.
You can also go from a basic container straight to iron, or from copper to iron. The quests then continue with gold, diamond and netherite, in this order:[2][3]
- Copper: a quest in "?"[2]
- Iron: a quest in "?"[2]
- Gold: a quest in "?"[2]
- Diamond: a quest in "?"[2]
- Netherite: a quest in "?"[2]
Connect your storage
Once you have a few containers, build a Storage Controller. It allows you to deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. It has its own quest: a quest in "?".[2][4]

Next, make the Storage Tool. It links, locks, and hides counts, tiers and locks on storages. Its quest, a quest in "?", comes after the controller quest.[2][4]

Then craft a Storage Link. It connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller, and you use the Storage Tool to link it. Its quest, a quest in "?", comes after both the controller and Storage Tool quests. If you already have a controller, you can make the link from it instead.[2][3][4]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?
7 parts
Sophisticated Storage is more than chests and barrels. The sources for this pack explain three systems: multiblock storage you can pipe into, upgrades that give a storage block jobs like smelting or pumping, and tier and stack upgrades that grow what you already have.[3][4]
Multiblock storage and piping
The Controller allows you to deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages.[4]
The Storage Link connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.[4]
Input, Output and I/O
Three blocks decide how pipes talk to a storage multiblock once they are placed in it. Storage Input lets you pipe items in, Storage Output lets you pipe items out, and Storage I/O lets you pipe items both to and from it. The Storage Input is described as optimized for low TPS impact.[3][4]
You can change your mind without crafting from scratch. In this pack each can be converted into the next with a single shapeless craft, so you can cycle Input to Output, Output to I/O, and I/O back to Input.[3]

Upgrades that automate
The Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the storage, and the Advanced version has more filtering options. The Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade is faster and has input and output options.[4]
- Magnet Upgrade: magnets items into the storage at range. The Advanced version works at a greater range and has more filtering options.[4]
- Pickup Upgrade: makes the storage pick up items. The Advanced version adds more filtering options.[4]
- Void Upgrade: voids the items selected in its filter. The Advanced version has more filtering options.[4]
- Feeding Upgrade: feeds you with food from the storage's inventory. The Advanced version has more options for when food gets fed.[4]
- Compacting Upgrade: compacts items into their compressed variants, with only 2x2 recipes. The Advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes with more filtering options.[4]
- Compression Upgrade: automatically compresses and decompresses items.[4]
Smelting, crafting and other tabs
Some upgrades add a workstation tab to the storage: crafting, a stonecutter, and smelting, blasting and smoking. The auto versions, Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, also automatically pull and push items.[3][4]
In this pack, the Auto-blasting and Auto-smoking upgrades are both crafted starting from an Auto-smelting Upgrade.[3]

The Chipped upgrades also put their table in an upgrade tab: Alchemy Bench, Botanist's Workbench, Carpenters Workbench, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table.[4]
Advanced Jukebox Upgrade is a portable jukebox with support for more music discs and more playback options. In this pack it is crafted from the basic Jukebox Upgrade.[3][4]

Fluids and experience
The Pump Upgrade pumps fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The Advanced Pump Upgrade works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade pumps experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[4]
Growing your storage
Stack upgrades multiply the number of stacks that fit in a slot. Tier 1 multiplies by 2, Tier 1 Plus by 3, Tier 2 by 4, Tier 3 by 8, Tier 4 by 16 and Tier 5 by 32.[4]
The Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version. Tier upgrades then exist for copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite. In this pack, the gold upgrade is crafted from the iron one, the diamond from the gold one, and the netherite from the diamond one. The iron upgrade can be made either directly or from the copper upgrade.[3][4]

The Limited Barrel comes in four versions, Limited Barrel 1 through Limited Barrel 4. Their tooltips show a slot count and a base stack size multiplier.[3][4]
Handy tools
The Storage Tool links, locks, and hides counts, tiers and locks on storages, and you use a keybind to change its mode. The Paintbrush applies decoration to storage blocks in the world, and you set which decoration it applies in the decoration table.[4]
Unverified The Packing Tape tooltip says it is disabled when the config is set to drop all storages as packed. The sources here show no config files for this mod, so whether that setting is on in this pack is not shown. The same goes for exact slot counts, tank capacities, magnet ranges and hopper speeds.
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
In this pack, the quest chapter called "storage" walks you up the tier ladder in a straight line: copper, iron, gold, diamond, netherite. Each quest is satisfied by having the chest or the barrel of that tier, so you can pick whichever style you like.[2]
The quest path
- Copper: a quest in "?" asks for a Copper Chest or a Copper Barrel.[2]
- Iron: a quest in "?" unlocks after the copper quest and asks for an Iron Chest or an Iron Barrel.[2]
- Gold: a quest in "?" follows the iron quest and asks for a Gold Chest or a Gold Barrel.[2]
- Diamond: a quest in "?" follows the gold quest and asks for a Diamond Chest or a Diamond Barrel.[2]
- Netherite: a quest in "?" follows the diamond quest and asks for a Netherite Chest or a Netherite Barrel.[2]
How each tier is crafted
Each tier is an upgrade recipe: you turn a lower-tier container into the next one by adding the matching material. The chest recipes are shown below, and the barrels have matching recipes for each tier. The netherite step is a shapeless recipe, so the layout in the grid doesn't matter.[3]

Tier upgrade items
The pack also has separate tier upgrade items: Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade, Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade and Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade. They follow the same ladder: the iron one can be made from the copper one, the gold one from the iron one, the diamond one from the gold one, and the netherite one from the diamond one. The netherite upgrade is shapeless.[3]

Storage minecarts have their own upgrade recipes that follow the same path: copper and iron from the basic container, then gold, diamond and netherite one step at a time.[3]
Quests beyond the tiers
The same chapter has quests for the networking pieces. a quest in "?" asks for the Storage Controller. a quest in "?" comes after it and asks for the Storage Tool. a quest in "?" needs both of those and asks for the Storage Link. Separately, a quest in "?" asks for the Upgrade Base.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Sophisticated Storage connects to two other mods through its recipes: Sophisticated Backpacks and Chipped. Both links are about upgrades, so what you build for your chests and barrels carries over to your backpack.[3]
Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades between storage and backpacks
You don't have to build upgrades twice. The pack has conversion recipes that turn a Sophisticated Storage upgrade into its Sophisticated Backpacks twin. For example, the Magnet Upgrade can be converted into the Magnet Upgrade.[3]

This works for most of the upgrade lineup: Filter, Advanced Filter, Compacting, Advanced Compacting, Crafting, Feeding, Advanced Feeding, Jukebox, Advanced Jukebox, Magnet, Advanced Magnet, Pickup, Advanced Pickup, Void, Advanced Void, Stonecutter, and the Smelting, Smoking and Blasting upgrades, including their Auto versions.[3]
Stack upgrades convert too, but the tier names are shifted by one. The Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, and Stack Upgrade Tier 2 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 1. The pattern continues up to Stack Upgrade Tier 5, which becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 4.[3]
Going the other way, from a backpack upgrade to a storage upgrade, also has recipes. Here is the Jukebox Upgrade as an example.[3]

Chipped: workstation upgrades
Sophisticated Storage adds upgrades that bring Chipped workstations into your storage. Each upgrade is tied to one Chipped block, so you need that workstation to make it.[3]

Each Chipped storage upgrade also has a recipe that converts it into its Sophisticated Backpacks version, and a recipe that converts it back.[3]
Quests
The storage chapter of the quest book only asks for Sophisticated Storage items: the copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite chests or barrels, plus the Storage Controller, Upgrade Base, Storage Tool and Storage Link. None of those quests asks for items from another mod, so the connections to other mods come from the recipes above.[2]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Sophisticated Storage shows up in a single quest chapter in the pack, called "storage". It holds nine quests, and none of them have a title. Each one is a simple item-submission task, so you only need to have the item. Here is how they chain together.[5]
The chest and barrel tier line
This is the longest path in the chapter. Every tier accepts either the chest or the barrel, so pick whichever you prefer. The first two tiers both unlock off an earlier quest in the chapter that isn't about this mod's items, and the line continues from there.[5]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Copper Chest or a Copper Barrel.[5]
- a quest in "?" asks for an Iron Chest or an Iron Barrel. It needs the copper quest finished, plus the same earlier quest the copper one needs.[5]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Gold Chest or a Gold Barrel.[5]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Diamond Chest or a Diamond Barrel.[5]
- a quest in "?" is the end of the line. It asks for a Netherite Chest or a Netherite Barrel.[5]
The controller line
The second branch is about linking your storage together. It starts with the Storage Controller, then moves on to the tools that connect to it.[5]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Storage Controller.[5]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Storage Tool and unlocks after the controller quest.[5]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Storage Link. It needs both the controller quest and the storage tool quest done first.[5]
The standalone quest
a quest in "?" asks for the Upgrade Base. It unlocks from the same earlier quest as the copper and controller quests, and no other quest in this chapter depends on it.[5]
Unverified The quests have no titles or descriptions in the pack files, and no rewards are listed. What the quests give you for completing them is unverified.
