What is Sophisticated Storage?

This pack includes Sophisticated Storage at version 0.10.26 (file sophisticatedstorage-1.21-0.10.26.816.jar). It has been part of the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources here do not show a quest book chapter, group or position for Sophisticated Storage, and they do not show it as part of the ATM Star path. Check the pack's quest book in game for any placement.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide

Sophisticated Storage adds chests, barrels and shulker boxes that you can improve with upgrades. Here is the order I'd go in.[2][3]

Make a chest or barrel

Start with a Chest or a Barrel. The recipes are listed per wood type, for example acacia, bamboo, birch and cherry, so pick whichever wood you have on hand. Here are the acacia versions as examples.[2]

There are also Limited Barrel 1 to Limited Barrel 4 variants, made per wood type as well. Their tooltip shows a slot count and a stack size multiplier. I'd skip them until you have a reason to want one.[2][3]

Convert your vanilla storage

Next, craft the Basic Tier Upgrade. Its tooltip says it upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version, so you can use it on storage you already have instead of rebuilding everything.[2][3]

Climb the tier ladder

The tier upgrades go copper, iron, gold, diamond, netherite. You can start at Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade. The iron one can be crafted from the copper one, and the gold, diamond and netherite ones are each crafted from the previous tier's upgrade.[2]

Add upgrades

Stack upgrades multiply the number of stacks that can fit in a slot, from 2 for tier 1 up to 32 for tier 5. That makes them a straightforward way to get more space.[3]

Many other upgrades, such as the Compacting Upgrade and Blasting Upgrade, are built from the Upgrade Base. The compacting upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants and only handles 2x2 recipes.[2][3]

Pipe items in and out

Once you have a storage multiblock, Storage Input lets you pipe items in, Storage Output lets you pipe items out, and Storage I/O does both. The three convert into each other, and the recipes are shown below.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?

6 parts

Sophisticated Storage is more than chests and barrels. Its machinery is a set of multiblock parts for piping, plus a big family of upgrades that give a storage block jobs like smelting, filtering or pumping. Here is how it all works, as far as the pack's files explain it.[3]

Storage multiblocks and piping

The Controller is the heart of a storage multiblock. It lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. You don't need a separate pipe setup for every chest.[3]

  • Storage Input: placed in a storage multiblock, it lets you pipe items into it. It is described as optimized for low TPS impact.[3]
  • Storage Output: placed in a storage multiblock, it lets you pipe items out of it.[3]
  • Storage I/O: placed in a storage multiblock, it lets you pipe items both to and from it.[3]
  • Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.[3]

You don't need to craft all three piping blocks from scratch. In this pack you can convert them into each other with shapeless recipes, one block at a time, cycling around Input, I/O and Output.[4]

The Storage Tool does several jobs. It links storages, locks them, and hides counts, tiers or locks. You press the control shown in its tooltip to change mode.[3]

Tiers, stack upgrades and limited barrels

The Basic Tier Upgrade turns vanilla inventories into their sophisticated versions. After that you move up through the tier upgrades: Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade, Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade, Basic to Gold Tier Upgrade, Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade and Basic to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[3][4]

In this pack the gold, diamond and Netherite upgrades are crafted by building on the previous tier's upgrade. Here are the recipes.[4]

Stack upgrades multiply the number of stacks that fit in a slot. The tooltips give these multipliers by tier:[3]

Limited barrels come in four versions, Limited Barrel 1 through Limited Barrel 4. Each has a set number of slots and a base stack size multiplier shown in its tooltip. The sources I have don't give the actual values per version, so check the tooltips in game.[3][4]

Breaking storages and keeping the contents

This pack sets common.dropPacked to false. That option controls whether chests and barrels always drop packed with their contents when broken, without needing packing tape. Packing tape's tooltip says it is disabled when the config drops all storages as packed. Since that option is off here, the tape isn't disabled.[3][5]

Item automation upgrades

Upgrades slot into a storage and handle item movement. These are the main ones:[3]

  • Hopper Upgrade: pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The Advanced version is faster and has input and output options.[3]
  • Filter Upgrade: filters items piped in and/or out of the storage. The Advanced version has more filtering options.[3]
  • Pickup and Magnet Upgrades: the Pickup Upgrade makes the storage pick up items. The Magnet Upgrade pulls items in from range, and the Advanced version has a greater range.[3]
  • Void Upgrade: voids the items selected in its filter.[3]
  • Feeding Upgrade: feeds you food from the storage's inventory. The Advanced version has more options for when food is fed.[3]
  • Compacting Upgrade: compacts items into their compressed variants, but only 2x2 recipes. The Advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3 recipes.[3]

Here are the pack's server config values for the advanced upgrades. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade waits server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks = 2 ticks between transfers and moves up to server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize = 4 as its maximum stack size per transfer. It has 4 input filter slots and 4 output filter slots. The Advanced Magnet Upgrade picks up items within server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange = 5 blocks of the storage.[6]

The Advanced Compacting, Feeding, Filter, Magnet, Pickup and Void Upgrades each have 16 filter slots, shown 4 to a row. The basic Compacting Upgrade has 9 filter slots, shown 3 to a row. Each of those slot counts can be set between 1 and 20 in the config. server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAnythingEnabled is true, so the Advanced Void Upgrade can void anything instead of only having the overflow option.[6]

Smelting upgrades

The Smelting, Blasting and Smoking Upgrades run a furnace-style process inside an upgrade tab. The auto versions, Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade, also automatically pull and push items. Blasting is for ores and metal stuff, and smoking is for food.[3]

In this pack the smelting speed multiplier and fuel efficiency multiplier are both 1 for the auto smelting, auto blasting and auto smoking upgrades, and for the plain Blasting Upgrade. The config says 1.0 equals vanilla furnace speed and fuel use. You can set either between 0.25 and 4.0. For example, see server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier. Each auto upgrade has 8 input filter slots and 4 fuel filter slots.[6]

The auto-blasting and auto-smoking upgrades are crafted from the auto-smelting upgrade in this pack:[4]

Fluids, experience and crafting tabs

Fluids work through a Tank upgrade. The Pump Upgrade pumps fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The Advanced Pump Upgrade works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.[3]

Some upgrades just add a workstation to a tab: crafting table, stonecutter, and several Chipped workbenches (Alchemy Bench, Botanist's Workbench, Carpenters Workbench, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table).[3]

Unverified Tank upgrade capacity, pump speeds, the Compression Upgrade's exact behavior, and any energy or power use are not covered by the sources available for this pack, so they are unverified here.

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 0.64 guide

Sophisticated Storage tiers are not gated by quests in this pack. The progression is purely a crafting chain: you place a tier upgrade item onto a chest or barrel you already own to bump it up a level. The in-pack recipes show a clear ladder from basic to copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite.[2]

Starting at Basic

Your starting point is the Basic Tier Upgrade. It has its own recipe, and it sits at the bottom of the ladder.[2]

Upgrading from Basic

If your storage is still basic, the pack gives you a direct upgrade item for each higher tier. Copper is the cheapest first step with Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade.[2]

Iron can be made directly, or you can build it out of the copper upgrade, so nothing is wasted if you already made one.[2]

Upgrading from Copper

If your storage is already copper, you don't have to go back to basic. The pack has a second set of upgrades that start at copper, and they follow the same ladder: Copper to Iron Tier Upgrade, then Copper to Gold Tier Upgrade, then Copper to Diamond Tier Upgrade, then Copper to Netherite Tier Upgrade.[2]

Tip: Each step is built from the previous step's upgrade item, so you can climb one tier at a time as you find materials. Make sure you craft the upgrade that matches the tier your storage is at right now.[2]

Functional upgrades alongside the tiers

Tiers are only half of the progression. The functional upgrades are separate items made from an Upgrade Base, such as the Crafting Upgrade, Compacting Upgrade and Blasting Upgrade. The blasting and auto-blasting upgrades can also be made from the smelting and auto-smelting versions, and the auto-smoking upgrade can be made from the auto-smelting one.[2]

Unverified The pack's quest book does not appear to cover this mod, so there are no quest steps to follow for it. I also could not confirm the slot counts or stack limits for each tier from the sources I have, so check those in game.

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.25 guide

In this pack, Sophisticated Storage connects to two other mods through its recipes: Sophisticated Backpacks and Chipped. Both links are about upgrades, so what you build for your chests and barrels carries over to your backpack.[7]

Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades between storage and backpacks

You don't have to build upgrades twice. The pack has conversion recipes that turn a Sophisticated Storage upgrade into its Sophisticated Backpacks twin. For example, the Magnet Upgrade can be converted into the Magnet Upgrade.[7]

Storage Magnet Upgrade into the backpack version.

This works for most of the upgrade lineup: Filter, Advanced Filter, Compacting, Advanced Compacting, Crafting, Feeding, Advanced Feeding, Jukebox, Advanced Jukebox, Magnet, Advanced Magnet, Pickup, Advanced Pickup, Void, Advanced Void, Stonecutter, and the Smelting, Smoking and Blasting upgrades, including their Auto versions.[7]

Stack upgrades convert too, but the tier names are shifted by one. The Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus becomes the Stack Upgrade Starter Tier, and Stack Upgrade Tier 2 becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 1. The pattern continues up to Stack Upgrade Tier 5, which becomes Stack Upgrade Tier 4.[7]

Tip: Check the tier names before you convert a stack upgrade. A storage Tier 2 turns into a backpack Tier 1, so the numbers don't line up across the two mods.[7]

Going the other way, from a backpack upgrade to a storage upgrade, also has recipes. Here is the Jukebox Upgrade as an example.[7]

Chipped: workstation upgrades

Sophisticated Storage adds upgrades that bring Chipped workstations into your storage. Each upgrade is tied to one Chipped block, so you need that workstation to make it.[7]

Each Chipped storage upgrade also has a recipe that converts it into its Sophisticated Backpacks version, and a recipe that converts it back.[7]

Quests

The storage chapter of the quest book only asks for Sophisticated Storage items: the copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite chests or barrels, plus the Storage Controller, Upgrade Base, Storage Tool and Storage Link. None of those quests asks for items from another mod, so the connections to other mods come from the recipes above.[8]

Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?

5 parts

Sophisticated Storage has a client, a common and a server config file, and the values below are exactly what this pack sets. The sources show only the pack's values, not the mod's defaults, so I can't tell you which of these the pack changed.[5][6][9]

Storage size and upgrade slots

Each tier's inventory size and upgrade slot count is set per storage type in the server config. Chests, barrels and shulker boxes use the same numbers for the same tier. Slot counts can go from 1 to 180, and upgrade slots from 0 to 10.[6]

Limited barrels have a slot limit multiplier per level instead of an inventory size. Plain Limited Barrel I to IV use 32, 16, 10 and 8 (server.LimitedBarrelI.baseSlotLimitMultiplier), and each has 1 upgrade slot. The copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite limited barrels have their own multipliers and upgrade slot counts.[6]

Upgrade limits

server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many upgrades of one type a storage can hold. Chests, shulker boxes and barrels allow 2 stack upgrades, 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 furnace upgrade. Limited barrels list only 1 jukebox upgrade and 1 furnace upgrade.[6]

Stack upgrades won't stack bundles or shulker boxes of any colour, because they're on the server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems list.[6]

Breaking and packing

common.dropPacked is false in this pack. Chests and barrels don't always drop packed with their contents when broken, so you'll want packing tape for that.[5]

Watch out: If a chest or barrel would drop more than 200 item entities, the break is cancelled unless you hold shift, and a message explains the packing tape option. That threshold is server.tooManyItemEntityDrops.[6]

Upgrade tuning

Client and JEI display

client.showHigherTierTintedVariants is true, so JEI and the creative tab show tinted storage items for iron and higher tiers. client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly is false, so you see every wood variant rather than a single one per tier.[9]
