What is Sophisticated Storage?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Sophisticated Storage adds upgradeable chests and barrels, plus tools to tie them together into one big storage setup. This pack includes version 1.5.91 of the mod. It's for you if you're tired of chests everywhere and want storage that grows with your progress.[1][2]

Where it fits in progression

The pack's Basic Storage quest chapter walks you through the tiers in order. Start with the Copper Chest ("Copper Chest" quest). It's optional: you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron. Then move up through the Iron Chest, Gold Chest and Diamond Chest to the Netherite Chest, which the quest calls the biggest chest in the mod. Each tier also has a barrel version, and the quests accept either one.[2]

Linking storages together

The Storage Controller lets you treat several storages as one big multiblock. It also acts as the in/out point for everything attached to it, so you can combine it with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Place storages next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, and they join the network. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions.[2]

If you'd rather not build everything touching, use the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click each storage to link it. The wireless range is the same 14 blocks. The Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller, again within 14 blocks.[2]

Upgrades

Upgrades start from the Upgrade Base. The quest book points you to the Sophisticated Backpack upgrades and says the Sophisticated Storage versions function about the same, though you need to craft the storage equivalents.[2]

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Sophisticated Storage is all about starting with a simple chest or barrel and growing it into a proper storage network. Here is the order to tackle things in this pack, which follows the Basic Storage chapter of the quest book.[2]

Tier up your chest or barrel

Chests and barrels get better in tiers. In this pack, a tier upgrade combines the lower-tier storage with the next material, and the pack has changed these recipes from the mod's defaults. The quest "Copper Chest" quest points you at the Copper Chest first, but you do not need it on the way to iron. It is only a way to save some iron.[2][3]

This is an optional step, and the pack has changed this recipe.

The first real goal is the Iron Chest, covered by the quest "Iron Chest" quest. The barrel versions work the same way, and the quest accepts either the chest or the barrel.[2][3]

Make the Upgrade Base

Before you start adding features to your storage, craft the Upgrade Base. The quest a quest in "Basic Storage" calls it the base for upgrades, and says the Sophisticated Storage upgrades function about the same as the Sophisticated Backpack ones, so you can use those as a reference.[2]

Build a Storage Controller

Once you have a few storages, the Storage Controller lets you work with them as one big multiblock. Place storages next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, and they join the network. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. The controller also acts as an in/out point for every storage attached to it, so it can be combined with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics.[2][4]

The Storage Link goes one step further. It connects a separate multiblock of storages to the controller, so you do not have to right-click every single storage. The same 14-block range applies, and you use the Storage Tool to link it to the controller.[2][4]

Keep upgrading

The quest chain continues from iron to the Gold Chest ("Gold Chest" quest), then the Diamond Chest ("Diamond Chest" quest), and finally the Netherite Chest ("Netherite Chest" quest), which the quest calls the biggest of the chests. Each step upgrades the previous tier, and the barrels follow the same ladder.[2][3]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?

7 parts

Sophisticated Storage is more than bigger chests. In this pack, the interesting parts are the storage multiblock, the pipe-in and pipe-out blocks, and the upgrade tabs that turn a chest into a small machine. Here's how they work, as far as the pack's own text explains them.[5]

Storage multiblocks

Storages can be joined into a multiblock. The controller lets you deposit items into a connected multiblock of storages and pipe items to and from it.[5]

If you have gaps between storage blocks, a storage connector bridges them inside the multiblock. The pack has changed the connector recipes. The Acacia one is shown below, and the recipe list also has a Bamboo version.[5][6]

A storage link connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You make the link with the Storage Tool. That same tool also locks storages and hides counts, tiers and locks.[5]

Piping items in and out

Three blocks decide how pipes and hoppers talk to a multiblock. They do that when placed in the multiblock.[5]

You don't need three separate crafts to get them. The pack has shapeless recipes that cycle one into the next: Input to Output, Output to I/O, and I/O back to Input. Keep one in your inventory and swap it to whatever you need.[6]

Stack upgrades and downgrades

Stack upgrades change how many stacks fit in each slot. The tooltips give these multipliers:[5]

  • Tier 1 multiplies by 2, and Tier 1 Plus by 3.[5]
  • Tier 2 multiplies by 4, and Tier 3 by 8.[5]
  • Tier 4 multiplies by 16, and Tier 5 by 32.[5]
  • The Omega tier multiplies by the maximum value, ×33,554,431.[5]

Going the other way, the three downgrade tiers divide the number of stacks per slot by 8, 16 and 32.[5]

Upgrades that automate

Many upgrades work like machines inside the storage. Smelting, blasting and smoking upgrades run in an upgrade tab. The auto versions also pull and push items by themselves. Auto-smelting Upgrade is the base. In this pack, the recipes for Auto-blasting Upgrade and Auto-smoking Upgrade start from it.[5][6]

Some other upgrades help with item handling:[5]

  • The hopper upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The advanced version is faster and has input and output options.[5]
  • The filter upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the storage. The advanced version has more filtering options.[5]
  • The pickup upgrade makes the storage pick up items. The magnet upgrade pulls items into storage from range. The advanced versions add more filtering, and the advanced magnet has a greater range.[5]
  • The void upgrade voids items selected in its filter.[5]
  • The compacting upgrade compresses items into their compressed variants. The base version only handles 2x2 recipes, and the advanced one handles both 2x2 and 3x3.[5]
  • The feeding upgrade feeds you with food from the storage's inventory.[5]

Fluids and experience

Fluids work through a Tank upgrade plus pump upgrades. The pump upgrade moves fluids between the Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced pump also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and it can filter which fluids are pumped. A separate XP pump upgrade moves experience between the Tank upgrade and the player.[5]

Watch out: The Infinity upgrade makes all items in a storage infinite, and only admins can set infinite items and break that storage. The Survival Infinity upgrade does the same, but all players can set infinite items and break the storage. Be careful where you place it.[5]

Unverified The mod's config options are not shown in the sources here, so any values they set for storages are unverified. Check the mod's config in game.

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?

3 parts

Sophisticated Storage progression in this pack is a simple ladder: you start with a basic Chest or Barrel and upgrade it tier by tier. The pack's quests follow that ladder, and the pack has changed the recipes for every tier below.[6][7]

The tier ladder

  1. Copper (optional): the "Copper Chest" quest quest accepts either the Copper Chest or the Copper Barrel. The quest says you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron.[7]
  2. Iron: "Iron Chest" quest accepts the Iron Chest or the Iron Barrel. It unlocks after the Copper Chest quest, but the pack has recipes for reaching Iron from either a basic storage or a Copper one.[6][7]
  3. Gold: "Gold Chest" quest accepts the Gold Chest or the Gold Barrel, and follows the Iron Chest quest.[7]
  4. Diamond: "Diamond Chest" quest accepts the Diamond Chest or the Diamond Barrel, and follows the Gold Chest quest.[7]
  5. Netherite: "Netherite Chest" quest accepts the Netherite Chest or the Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest of the chests from this mod.[7]

Every tier recipe is a tier-upgrade recipe that the pack has changed. Barrels follow the same ladder as chests: you upgrade the barrel of the tier below, with Iron also reachable from a basic barrel and Copper made from a basic barrel. Here are the chest versions in order.[6]

Moving storage

Storage minecarts and storage boats have their own tier-upgrade recipes in the pack. They cover the same Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite steps, so you can upgrade a storage that is riding in a cart or boat. The pack has changed these recipes as well.[6]

Networking and upgrade basics

Alongside the tiers, the Basic Storage chapter has quests for linking your storages together. The Storage Controller lets multiple storages work like one big storage multiblock. You connect storages by placing them next to the controller or next to others already connected to it, and this works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. It also acts as the in/out point for the whole network, so it combines well with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics.[7]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Sophisticated Storage ties into a few other mods in this pack. The strongest link is Sophisticated Backpacks, because upgrades from the two mods can be converted into each other. Chipped and the Sawmill mod each feed into workstation upgrades, and the Storage Controller is meant to plug into storage-network mods.[2][3]

Sophisticated Backpacks: swapping upgrades

The pack has crafting recipes that turn a Sophisticated Storage upgrade into its Sophisticated Backpacks twin. The pack changed all of these recipes.[3]

This covers utility upgrades such as Magnet Upgrade and Void Upgrade, and advanced versions such as Advanced Filter Upgrade. Here is the storage-to-backpack conversion for the Magnet Upgrade:[3]

The pattern continues up to Storage Stack Upgrade Tier 5 and Backpack Stack Upgrade Tier 4. Check the tier in the name before you craft.[3]

The quest for the Upgrade Base points the same way: it tells you to look at the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades, and says the Storage equivalents work about the same.[2]

Chipped workstation upgrades

Chipped adds a storage upgrade for each of its workstations: Chipped: Alchemy Bench Upgrade, Chipped: Botanist's Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Carpenters Workbench Upgrade, Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade, Chipped: Loom Table Upgrade, Chipped: Mason Table Upgrade and Chipped: Tinkering Table Upgrade. Storage networks with Applied Energistics and Integrated Dynamics

The pack's quest for the Storage Controller says it lets several storages act like one big multiblock. It also says this can be combined with mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics, because the Storage Controller acts as an in/out point for every storage attached to it. See a quest in "Basic Storage".[2]

Storages connect by sitting next to the controller or next to a storage that is already connected, up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions. For wireless setups, the Storage Link connects storages that aren't attached to a controller, and the Storage Tool binds a controller to storages without placing them next to it. Both keep the same 14-block range.[2]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Sophisticated Storage?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Everything for this mod in the pack's quest book sits in one chapter, Basic Storage. Every quest in it unlocks after a quest called Sophisticated Storage, so that's your entry point. The chapter has two branches: a chest-tier ladder and a Storage Controller line.[2]

The chest ladder

The ladder is a straight line, and each quest accepts either the chest or the matching barrel. Submit whichever you've built.[2]

  1. "Copper Chest" quest asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says you can skip it on the way to an Iron Chest, but using it can save you some iron.[2]
  2. "Iron Chest" quest asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. It unlocks after Sophisticated Storage and the Copper Chest quest.[2]
  3. "Gold Chest" quest asks for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel, and it comes after the Iron Chest quest.[2]
  4. "Diamond Chest" quest asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel, and it comes after the Gold Chest quest.[2]
  5. "Netherite Chest" quest asks for a Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest chest from Sophisticated Storage, and it comes after the Diamond Chest quest.[2]

a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Controller. The quest text explains that it lets you treat multiple storages as one big multiblock. It also says the controller works as an in/out point for mods like Applied Energistics or Integrated Dynamics. Storages placed next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it, join the network, up to 14 blocks away in all directions.[2]

a quest in "Basic Storage" comes after the Controller quest and asks for the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click storages to link them wirelessly. The range is the same 14 blocks.[2]

a quest in "Basic Storage" needs both the Controller quest and the Storage Tool quest first. It asks for the Storage Link, which connects storages that aren't attached to a controller or to blocks connected to it. You get a wireless multiblock without right-clicking each storage, and the 14-block range still applies.[2]

Upgrades

a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. To keep the chapter from filling up with upgrade quests, the text points you to the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades. You'll need to craft the Sophisticated Storage versions, but the text says they work about the same.[2]

Tip: The Copper Chest, Controller and Upgrade Base quests all unlock straight after Sophisticated Storage, so you can do them in any order. Only the Iron Chest, Storage Link and later chest tiers wait on other quests.[2]
